THE SIX MOST NEEDED THINGS IN THE CHURCH Gus Nichols

Conversion of the Members. The new birth consists of more than baptism. One has to be born of the Spirit and of the water. Those of us who have been baptized must have been led to believe in Jesus as the Son of God and the Lord of life. Conversion is in reality a matter of surrender of one’s life and commitment to Jesus as the Lord of ourselves.

Regular Attendance. Yes, it takes more than attendance to be a Christian, but there is no way one can be a Christian and develop the Christ-like life without worship and Bible study.

Sanctification. There must be a clear-cut distinction between Christians and the world. The meshing of the church with the world is one of the great problems facing twentieth century Christianity. [Also twenty-first century Christianity].

Liberality. The Lord’s people are learning more and more about sacrifice and generosity. For the first time in our history, churches are planning big things in the name of the Lord. Million dollar contributions are being given by single congregations. But, it is not the special contributions that will make the church benevolent, but weekly giving-as-prospered contributions that the church needs to develop liberality.

Unity. Many congregations are marred by schism, faction, and disharmony. The church must believe the same thing and work for the same goals. Programs must be so challenging that they require the unity of all to succeed.

Informed Leadership. Leaders must be first of all committed to what the Bible says. Leaders also need to know how to lead and where to go. It is not so much “who’s getting to run the church?” as it is in seeking to give preeminence to God.

LOOKING BACK

LOOKING FORWARD

Sermon Rewind This past Sunday we studied the life of a woman who literally changed the course of the world by the courage she displayed, the faith she possessed and the love she demonstrated. Jochebed was an Israelite woman who was dedicated to the God of heaven and was blessed by her faithfulness to Him.

Jochebed had the courage to rebel against the wicked Pharaoh who ordered all newborn Israelite boys to be slaughtered (Exo. 1:22). When her child was born, she hid him for three months until she could no longer hide him (Exo. 2:1-2). She refused to give into a godless system that would cost her the life of her son. Mothers need to stand against the forces that would snatch the souls of their children.

Jochebed also acted in great faith. When she realized she could no longer hide her son she made an ark and placed the child in the river trusting that God would provide a way. We often wonder about the emotions she surely displayed and the prayers she offered as she placed the ark into the water. It took amazing faith to take her hands off the life of this child and leave him to the will of God.

Jochebed showed her love. After Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses, she instructed her servants to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the child. Jochebed’s days were filled caring for the child that would eventually grow into a man and lead God’s people out of slavery. Moses was fortunate, not because he grew up in the riches of a king’s palace, but because he experienced the love of a godly mother.
