Winter is here and so comes snow and very cold

weather, there are a few hearty soles who keep on

fishing—I’m not one. In this time of the year, I like to tie flies and read about fishing areas I’d like to visit. By the time you read this Christmas will have come gone, I hope your Christmas was a fun time and that maybe Santa was good to you.

In the upcoming months, we have a couple of sporting shows and conferences to go to.

This Flyline covers the Hawkeye Fly Fishing As-sociation’s Annual Show and Business Meeting. Be sure to look over the presentations and times. This year’s show has some great speakers so make plans to attend this event. For many of us it is a time to renew our HFFA membership and to meet some old and new friends. I enjoy the vendor hall; even though my budget is low I still spend maybe a little too much. Our business meeting is an interesting time to find out what is happen-ing with your fishing club, join us and voice your opinion.

We will have a board meeting before the annual meeting, so if you have topic you would like dis-cussed let someone on the board know about it.

Keep those lines wet,Fred Genung

The SAGE ONE rod is the first fly rod to take advantage of Sage’s groundbreaking Konnetic technology. According to Sage, Konnetic technology uses new materials combined with

pioneering manufacturing methods and processes to create an excep-tional performance. The new technology incorporates an optimized ratio of Sage’s proprietary resin to exclusive high modulus aerospace-grade carbon fiber. The resulting inherent strength of Konnetic tech-nology allows ONE rods to have a smaller diameter and are 25% lighter than comparable Sage rods. The ONE rod offers outstanding tracking with virtually no lateral or torsional movement, resulting in astonishing casting accuracy that is unparalleled in the marketplace.” “The ONE rod becomes a true extension of the angler’s arm,” notes Sage Chief Rod Designer, Jerry Siem. “It offers a more fluid transmis-sion of energy from the arm to the fly. The eye sees the cast it wants to make and is translated to the hand through the rod instantaneously.” Simply put Konnetic technology allows the caster to feel exactly what the line is doing through all stages of the cast. It gives fly-fisher ultimate control so they can make the micro-adjustments needed to place the fly precisely where it’s wanted. At the 2011 European Fishing Tackle Trade Exhibition (EFT-TEX), the ONE rod won “Best New Fly Rod” by the European trade association. Visually, the rods are different any thing Sage has previously manufactured. The new color “Black Ice” is a glossy black rather the traditional Sage green. ONE rods feature black guide wraps and bronze trim wraps. This year’s raffle rod comes with a powder-coated aluminum rod tubewith Sage medallion and a hand-made rod sock. A retail value over $1500.

As early as the age of eight, Brian O’Keefe began fly fishing while spending summers in Montana with his grandparents. During this time, he was taught the art of fly casting and fishing by his grandfather, a dry fly purist. On family vacations, Brian would often go off alone to fish a nearby stream. His inter-

est in photography began as a means to back up with pictures, what his family thought might be just “tall tales”. Brian’s presentation Montana: 10 Rivers, the Hatches, Access, Seasons, Tackle and Technique is sure to feature a tale or two for those interested in fly fishing out West.

In 1973, Brian, with camera in hand, started fly-fishing the world. His adventures have taken him to some of the wildest and most re-mote angling destinations in the world, including: Bikini Atoll, the Seychelles, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tonga, Cuba and Kashmir. He has also traveled to more accessible locations, such as: the Bahamas, Belize, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Chile, New Zealand, Christmas Island and more. In many of these locations he again chooses to venture off the beaten path, hiking, floating, sea-kayak-ing or taking a Zodiac into the backcountry. Early on in his career, Brian spent his summers guiding in the Northwest and Alaska for trout, salmon and steelhead. Brian’s presentation Alaska: All the Fish and on Any Budget will include lots information on fishing the great Northwest.

Rich Osthoff is a noted author, fly tier and fly fishing guide from western Wisconsin. Rich has developed innovative trout, steelhead,

and warm-water flies for use throughout the Upper Midwest.

Rich has a wealth of experience on fly fishing the Western United States. His first book, Fly-Fishing the Rocky Mountain Backcountry (1999), is based on 20 summers of hiking and fishing throughout the wilderness areas of the Rocky Mountain range. From the trophy golden trout waters of the Wind River Range, to the rainbows deep within Black Canyon of the Gunnison, to the premier westslope cutthroat trout rivers of Montana and Idaho, it’s the only first-hand account of exploring wilderness waters throughout the Rockies. Look for insights in

his presentation: Fly-Fishing the West’s Best Rivers on Your Own Rich’s experience is not limited to out West. He guides fly fishing for trout on his home waters—the fertile spring creeks of western Wisconsin. Rich’s second book, No Hatch To Match (2001), is contains insights into fly-fishing resourcefully be-tween Upper Midwest and Western hatches. From anticipating temperature-induced feeding, to pros-pecting at a productive pace, to identifying and exploiting niches of active trout, his work consists of innovative techniques and patterns. On Sunday, Rich will discuss fly tying during his presentation Designing Flies.

Osthoff’s most recent book, Active Nymphing (2006), demonstrates a different approach to traditional fly fishing with nymphs. Rich’s dynamic nymphing strategies illustrates that it is moving the nymph on a tight line, not dead-drifting on a slafck line, that gives you precise manual control over the speed, path, and the behavior of the nymph. The book includes fly-casting weighted nymphs with high line speeds and near dry-fly accuracy. Rich will explore techniques and patterns in his presentation Fly Fishing the Driftless Area. Rich enjoys fly-fishing for trout and smallmouth bass, particularly the trophy smallmouth bass of the Quetico/Superior canoe country, and has developed several top water and subsurface flies for smallmouth bass. He is a member of the St. Croix Rod Factory Team

Quality Iowa fisheries depend on quality anglers.

The Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association would like to thank all those who contributed over the past 36 years. The money donated has been essential to funding our mission. The HFFA has funded many warm water and cold water projects across the state of Iowa. With your assistance, we can fund many more.

With help from the HFFA, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources established natural reproducing brown trout in several Iowa streams as well as preserved Iowa’s native species of brook trout. The HFFA works to protect Iowa’s waters from degradation as well as increasing their quality and accessibility for everyone. Would you like to see more and better fishing opportunities in Iowa, donating to the HFFA is a great first step.

Take time to review your contributions to our organization. On the mailing label of this newsletter, an expiration date is listed. If the date listed has expired, please take time to fill out the form on page 13 and send a donation to keep your membership active. If you are not member, this is a perfect time to join. An active membership is important to HFFA for funding projects improving and protecting Iowa’s fisheries.
