From Your Pastor... Who is God to you?
I attended an event several years
ago where a woman shared her sto-
ry of human trafficking. She had
been lied to and deceived while still
in her teens; lured in with free gifts
and a party lifestyle; then told she
“owed” something in return. She
was pushed into prostitution, then
beaten, threatened, and terrified
constantly to keep her there.
After some years, and with help,
she was able to get away.
During the question
and answer time,
someone asked, “Who
is God to you?”
“Wow,” she said,
with a pause. “That is
a great question.”
She knows God is great and
powerful; she was brought up with
that God. She grew up with the
God who was fearsome, ready to
judge, and somewhat distant.
But that isn’t the God that
moves her to faith any more. God
who helps her now is close, even
right next to her. God knows who
she is, everything that she has done,
and everything that has been done
to her, and this God says, “You are
mine and you are a beautiful crea-
tion.”
This God heals and restores and
makes all things new.
Years later her story still lives in
my mind. In story and words she
gave witness to the God revealed in
Scripture (read: Isaiah 43:1, Matthew
22:37-40, Luke 15:2, John 3:16-17, Ephe-
sians 2:13-17). And yet she never
quoted a single Bible verse. Rather,
God’s word is written deep within
her. And in a humble, yet brave
voice she told us the truth of God.
Who is God to you?
Ultimately, this question really
matters. Is God terrify-
ing? Is God harmless?
Is God there only to
make us feel better or
grant our wishes? Is
God just an idea that
we formed to suit our
needs? What do you
think God is up to in the world…
today… this week?
God has come into the world in
the person of Jesus Christ. How
does that story become our story?
How has life been changed, chal-
lenged, or made new by the grace,
mercy, and the love of God?
That is a story we need to tell.
Who is God to you?
In Christ’s peace,
Pastor Erick
How has life been changed, challenged, or made new by the
grace, mercy, and the love of God?

August marked the end of summer for our youth. We had a lot of fun this sum-mer going to the lake, having bon fires, Adventure Land, endless games, and memories. We did a lot of service this summer helping members of the con-gregation, participating in the Prairie Fest Parade, going to Meals from the Heartland, and taking a mission trip to Cincinnati OH. We made a lot of new friends and are excited to see new fac-es at youth group and are keeping in touch with those we met while travel-ing.
September marks the beginning of the Fall and all the excitement
that comes with it. We will begin Sunday school, Confirmation,
Wednesday night Community meals and fellowship, Children’s
choir, and regular youth group events. Keep your eyes on the cal-
endar and don’t miss a thing. Dates to remember are September
14th Weekly meals and confirmation begin. Sept 25 is Sunday
School kick off, classes beginning Oct 2.
The youth have done at least one service project a month every month for the last 15 months. This month they are doing a youth lead worship service on September 11th. During worship we will hear testimonies from the high school mission trip. We will also have our annual Youth Labor Auction the same day after worship. Please come and consider renting a youth to do some errands, around the house chores, yard work, babysitting, or anything else you may need help with. All proceeds will go towards the 2017 mission trips.

Sunday School News

We will be having meetings to share this model on Sun-day, September 11th following worship and Wednes-day. September 14th at 6:30PM. We invite you to come and learn more. Rally Sunday will be on September 25th, with the 1st day of Sunday School on October 2nd. We are still in need of Leaders and Helpers for the various
classes. Please prayerfully consider volunteering to help
with Sunday School this year. You can sign up for as little
as a 4 week block or for several. There is a sign-up board
& a sign-up clipboard on the table in the back of the sanc-
tuary. Or you can contact Audra Schroeder, SS Superin-
tendent, at 515-231-7186 or audralschroeder@gmail. com
Announcement from Our Youth Director
Brittney Swanson wants to share with the whole congregation that she
and Zachary are expecting their third child. The baby is due in Janu-
ary. She has shared this news with the youth already and wanted to
be sure to share the exciting news with the whole congregation.
Throughout the pregnancy and after, Brittney is going to continue
working and serving as the Fjeldberg Lutheran Youth Director. There
may be some occasional appointments to keep, but she will continue
in her very active youth ministry responsibilities. We ask that all would
be supportive and at times flexible in the weeks and months ahead.
Thank you and peace

Direct Support Professionals Week
Do you know someone who is a caregiver to a loved one?
It is often both a demanding and meaningful role. During
September’s National Direct Support Professionals Week,
we celebrate all the ways in which these professionals
help children and adults achieve their goals and build
meaningful lives.
At LSI, direct support professionals partner with children
and adults with intellectual disabilities to help them pur-
sue personal goals, and they also provide care for chil-
dren and youth at our Beloit and Bremwood Residential
Treatment Centers.
This could mean helping an adult with autism live on her
own or helping a child who was abused begin to heal. We
thank you for your faithful support of LSI – you create so
many new possibilities for children, families and adults!
LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

This is a short, easy-to-read book that speaks to the tension and fears of our modern world, yet calls us to be bold and confident in Jesus Christ.

September WELCA Events Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016 Groups are Signed Up for making coffee and treats this year for after worship fellowship time for a month at a time. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 9:30 a.m. Gather Bible Study Group meets in the Fireside Room. Pastor Swanson will lead the Bible Study. (If you are not currently subscribing to the magazine, come anyway. We can share and it might be something that you want to become a part of once a month this year.) Every Thursday 1:30 p.m. Mary Group meets at Ballard Creek Community GATHER: When God Forgives the Guilty Session 1 : JONAH and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day MAIN TEXT: Jonah 3:10-4:4 (You will want to read the book of Jo-nah.) This is a three month study written by Meghan Johnston Aelabouni. We remember the story of Jonah from our Sunday School days, but our author has us thinking of new ideas, view points, and meanings. I thought that I had this story down pat. I even taught it in Sunday School and had read it in several translations and paraphrases, but guess what! This study really made me be open to thinking about many things in a new way. We will have a lively discussion with our pastor, I am sure. In Sunday School I was amazed at the whale, the prayer, and spit-
ting Jonah out on dry land, but I don't remember focusing on the dis-
cussion/argument that Jonah had with God. Several of the articles
focus on this very thing that really bothered Jonah. What is fairness?
We are asked the question--When might it be hard to accept that
God would forgive someone? We will look at mercy and for-
giveness. I got a chuckle out of Jonah and God's discussion of the
bush.

I had never focused on that either. Our author and discussion
will help us get even a richer message to print on our hearts
from this study. It certainly made me aware of how little im-
portance in the past I had made of some parts of this story.
Every time we dig into God's Word, we find new and won-
derful things. I am looking forward to our fellowship, dis-
cussion, and what our author will lead us to study in the next
two months.
Schedule a couple hours with your Lord on Sat. morning-Oct. 8 to attend the Cluster I Gathering at Palestine Lu-theran Church in Huxley. The program will be about how service dogs are trained and helping our veterans returning from deployments with special needs. It will be a fantastic program pre-sented only a couple miles away. Be there. You will be blessed.
REMINDER—Call-In Lines on Sunday mornings are
going away!
If you use one of the Call-In lines to listen to the Sunday
morning worship service here at Fjeldberg, this is to inform
you that those call-in lines are going away in the next few
weeks. The new systems at Huxley Communications will no
longer accommodate Call-In lines, so ours are being disabled
soon. If you would like to get a copy of the Sunday service
on DVD, we will glad to make a DVD for you and mail it to
you along with a copy of the Readings and the bulletin for
each Sunday. Just contact the church office at 515-597-
2831. If you do not have a DVD player available for your use
and you are homebound, also let us know that because we
may be able to provide you with a DVD player.
