2

Four brief stories for your Lenten journey:

In Confirmation class we talked about the Reformation. Christ’s Church is always reforming, always being called back to God in Christ.

We then asked, what could be re-formed in the Church today. These are 7th and 8th graders, so some were con-vinced the most important reform would be to make things more fun.

What was surprising was the stu-dents who said they have plenty of chances to have fun. When they come to church they expect something different. They want to meet God.

There’s always the temptation to change God’s house into something it wasn’t meant to be. But in this place we encounter the living God. And that changes us.

● ● ● The tough moments of parenting

are those moments when you know you’ve done it badly. I remember my dad telling about one of his:

Dad got mad at my brother John, much angrier than the situation re-quired. Dad later admitted he was an-gry about something else, but John endured the wrath. Dad was wrong and he knew it. He apologized to my brother, hugged him, but still could shake his guilt. Dad said he felt ashamed of himself and couldn’t snap out of it.

Dad said it was my brother John who came and spoke redemption to him, in the simple words of a child; “Dad, the sun is shining.”

So also, God doesn’t leave us con-demned and broken. God gave us the Son to save us and give us life again.

● ● ● Sometimes I’m asked about leaving

my previous career and going into min-istry. People give me credit for being bold, faithful, or committed. Actually, I was uncertain, slow to decide, fearful, and occasionally tempted to look with longing at what I’d left behind.

God gave me Kristi, a great family, a beautiful seminary community, and the support of Christ’s Church. They helped me live beyond the moment and

hold on to a hope that lies just beyond.

Being faithful might mean letting something fall into the earth and die so that new life may emerge.

● ● ● Someone I know is a pretty serious

sports fan (he’ll remain anonymous). I recall how excited he was when his favorite team hired a new head coach. He recounted the coach’s success at two previous teams. He described in detail what made this coach such a good fit for his team. It would be good, potentially glorious.

I also remember how eager he was, just three seasons later, for the ax to fall on that coach. The guy had no skill, not the right fit, and he knew nothing about running an offense.

Hail the anointed! Let’s crucify him! How fast our loyalties can change. Oh Jesus, don’t you know it.

May our Lenten wilderness wander-ing continue to call you back to the God who loves you.

In Christ’s peace,

Pastor Erick

God is up to something at Fjeldberg By Harold Lande

You get a sense of what God is up to at Fjeldberg when your walk by the new

little free library structure outside the church entrance open to the community.

You get a sense when you walk through the freshly painted red front doors on

Sunday morning and hear the visiting and laughing like a large family reunion-

because that is what we are-a family in Christ. Sometimes it’s hard for the pas-

tor to quiet his “family” to start the service-this is good!

I think we all appreciate the joy and enthusiasm Pastor Eric exhibits. I especial-

ly appreciate his background wisdom on the biblical lessons each Sunday. I am

also sure he does not have a day off-only a day out of the office!

I think about how music is such a large part of our ministry. The Bell Choir is a

good example for us. One bell ringing is one bell ringing, but many bells to-

gether ringing in the right order makes beautiful music. Members of Fjeldberg

working together can do beautiful things. Fjeldberg also has always been

blessed with an outstanding choir with a heartfelt, loving message. Our organist,

Ruth Lee, is one of our biggest blessings.

You can’t talk about Fjeldberg without mentioning our active youth program. It

is evident within our church walls and reaches out into the community. An ex-

cellent example of our church community outreach.

What is God up to at Fjeldberg?

Look at the church calendar.

Look at the people around you.

A lot!

God is up to something at Fjeldberg The stewardship & evangelism committee invites you to

Give God the glory as you share a short story

We know that you have witnessed His presence at Fjeldberg. Be creative, be

bold, be uninhibited, be intentional, go above and beyond in a way you never

dreamed possible to give God the glory. In 300 words or less share your story

glorifying what God is up to at Fjeldberg.

more dramatic. I will share a time when Brett was a little tow head-ed toddler. The helper was a "them". What would it be like to be helped by an enemy as the Samaritan was to a Jewish person in need? They would never even eat off dishes used by the others. There was a long time dislike between these two groups. We are asked to think of the ones who walked by, but also about the wounded person in the ditch. How would we feel if we were to be helped by someone we really distrusted? Who would you least want to help you? Interesting ideas. Our author reminds us that maybe we hear different things from the Holy Scripture because that is what God wants us to hear. Don't you sometimes feel that a ser-mon is directed right at you to do or live differently? What a bless-ing! Who is my neighbor? Anyone who needs help. But it can mean whoever helps me. We are called. "Go and do likewise."

Session 3 : The Good Samaritan

MAIN TEXT: Luke 10:30-37 The Rev. Dr. Mark Allan Powell leads us in this 3rd study about our different interpretations of the same Bible story. This Good Samaritan story is even known by those who may never have opened or read the Bible. There are even Good Samaritan laws in place that require us to aid anyone in need. We ought to be willing to help anyone in need, but of course when it comes to Jesus, nothing is ever so simple. Martha Stortz writes in her arti-cle (p.18) that there's only one kind of people in this world: neighbors. The lawyer who asks Jesus, "Who is my neighbor?" gets a whole parable as an answer. If you read earlier verses, this learned fellow wants to know what to do to have eternal life. Stortz in her article likens this parable to the Russian nesting dolls. A story within a story within another story. We have to go way beyond the "us and them" that is so prevalent in today's culture. Sad to say how few of us are eager to go across the road to help that neighbor so unlike us? We are to bring to discussion a time when we were helped or rescued by someone or a time that we were able to rescue someone else. It could be someone out of gas or someone stuck in the snow or something quite a bit

Friday, Mar. 2, 2018 WORLD PRAYER DAY 5 churches in the Slater area are celebrating this day with a service. Check with Bethlehem for details.

Fjeldberg Faith Sisters returns!

Join us on March 18 at 6:30 pm

for an evening of connecting with Fjeldberg Faith Sisters and dis-covering how God's unending creativity is reflected through us. Kelsey Grulke is a daughter of Fjeldberg and Lutheran Bible Translators missionary in World Arts. She will lead us through hands-on, thought-provoking activities and discussion as we dive deeper into our relationships with God and with one anoth-er. Bring your Bible and a journal if you have one. Kelsey will be leaving for mission work in Botswana in mid-April, so this chance won't come again for several years! Join us on March 18! What is LENT and why does it matter?

Lent is the period beginning with Ash Wednesday and ending on

the Saturday right before Easter. It is 40 days (not counting Sun-

days). The whole point of Lent is to focus your heart and your

mind on Jesus during the journey to the cross, honoring

Christ’s ultimate sacrifice and culminating in His subsequent glo-

rious resurrection. It is a time for self-reflection, learning, moder-

ation, and preparation.

Same-Sex Marriage

Adult Forum, March 11 & 18

A Biblical and Faithful Conversation • We have a request from a life-long church

member to be married at Fjeldberg in a same

-sex marriage.

• How do we talk about this Biblically?

• How do we love and support them, even with

mixed feelings and understandings?

• What if we’re uncertain?

This is a 2-part discussion that will look at how the Bible engages complex issues and how we engage with the Bible.
