populated of irish-american members, the five points gang was a band of criminals based in the lower manhattan area of new york during the 19th century. founded by italian american paul kelly, the gang had a reputation for fatal violence and corrupting politicians. famous american gangsters including al capone, johnny torrio, and lucky luciano were members of the gang before reaching the peaks of their criminal lives.

the five points gang used a number of methods to earn money and power in manhattan including robbery, racketeering, and prostitution rings. by strong arming local politicians they were able to keep police involvement away.

the first recorded gang of new york, the forty thieves, begun their life of crime in the back of a local grocery store in the five points owned by rosanna peers. with well more than forty members, almost entirely irish, they robbed streets and stores in new york for over twenty years.

considered one of the worst areas of the five points, donovans lane, otherwise known as murderer’s alley, was a small slum that joined baxter and pearl street near city hall. the lane was littered with opium dens, drunks and escaped criminals.

reporters from the time said that the lane was full of garbage and certain houses were so putrid that their noses had to be held before they approached the doors.
