June 20

Dear Friends,

This is an exciting time in the life of

First Lutheran Church — especially as

we look ahead to being fully staffed for

the first time in almost a year.

We have been grateful to welcome Judy Neumann as our full-time Office

Manager. She and Lynn Schmidt make a great team as Lynn steps back to a

part-time status.

We look forward to welcoming Preston Fields as our Seminary Intern on

August 1. It seems that wherever I go in church circles, including at the

Festival of Homiletics which I attended in Atlanta last week, I meet

someone who knows him well and is excited about the gifts he will bring to

ministry!

Finally, as of this week, the Church Council voted to extend an offer to Deb

Farnsworth to serve as our Chr istian Education Coordinator . Deb

joined First Lutheran about a year ago. Over the last 12 months you may

have seen her ringing in the bell choir, working in the kitchen, or stepping

up to help in the nursery. Deb grew up in a Lutheran Church in Iowa. She

has a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education: English and is currently

pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work with a Specialization in Faith

Based Practice. Early in her work life she worked for Mooseheart the Child

City and School and as a student life assistant at Mount St. Clare College in

Clinton, Iowa. Most recently she has been employed at Camelot Northwest

Center for Autism here in DeKalb.

The Personnel Committee interviewed a number of qualified candidates, but

Deb’s energy, experience, and deep personal faith made her stand out from

the rest. She will make a wonderful addition to our staff as we continue to

live out our calling to be in ministry with and for children and their families.

Please join me in welcoming Deb to the staff. She plans to be fully on board

with us on June 13.

And please pray for your staff here at First Lutheran as we transition to a

full team. We do take delight in serving God and all of you and we are

grateful for all the ways in which you show your kindness and support.

Peace to you and many blessings!

Sunday School News

On May 15, all of the Sunday

School classes came together to

experience the Fearless Vacation

Bible School preview. During

this preview, the children made

the walls of Jericho, then walked

around them seven times until

they fell. They also learned about

each story they will encounter

during VBS and how each person

in the stories were being fearless.

The classes finished by singing

some of the songs they will hear

at Vacation Bible School.

On May 22, the congregation

celebrated the Sunday School year and all those who made it possible. The

Learning and Growth Committee thanks the following individuals for being

there when needed to help lead our children during Sunday School and

Confirmation: Confirmation Guides — Kelly Buhk, Sara Ann Feken, Trent

Lange, Paul and Mary Lou

Letheby, and Tarryn Thaden;

Sea Turtles — Dawn Gersic,

Malena Graddy, Jennifer

Guymon, Maddie Jouris, and

Barbara Henson; Clownfish —

Linda Freeland, Marisa Busch,

Heidi Peterson, and Raelyn

Colvin; Gorillas — Stephanie

Corn, Bob Kuehl, Terri Kuhns,

Jeremy Corn, Kurt Oland,

Crystal Garvey, and Eulyn and

Franklin Frostestad; Club 3-4-5

— Teresa Lange, Heather Black,

Amy and Christian Kuhns, Susan Chaplin, Tarryn Thaden, and Lionel

(our friend from the Congo). A bib THANK YOU to each of you!!

During the Fearless VBS preview, Dawn

Gersic helps the children make the

walls of Jericho.

The Busch Family celebrates the Sunday

School year as it comes to a close during

the teacher appreciation reception.

Confession

Dear God, the last time we read the daily reading in the Day by Day Kid's Bible

was April 15! We are returning to your word in Day by Day on May 18. We

will seek the discipline we had the first quarter of the year to read daily. We are

sorry and seek your support in reading today plus a catch-up day the rest of the

year.

Summer Lunch Program

Each school day approximately 60% of DeKalb

School District 428 students eat a free or reduced

price lunch. Have you ever wondered what

happens when their stomachs growl during the

summer? Our neighbors at First United

Methodist Church have an important ministry to

fill those hungry tummies with nutritious food!

Volunteers prepare and serve lunch to families

every weekday from June 6 - August 20. This

year we have been asked to help our community

and join the fun! First Lutheran Church has

offered to provide six volunteers on Thursdays

for two 2-hour shifts (9:30 - 11:30 AM and 11:30

AM - 1:30 PM). Dawn Gersic is excited to be

coordinating our opportunity to be Christ’s

hands! A sign-up sheet may be found on the

table in the Narthex or contact Dawn at

815.758.4425.

Volunteers Needed

A new Hope Haven chart for volunteers is posted on the bulletin board

outside the Social Hall. Volunteers are asked to help provide a portion of

the meal. First Lutheran is responsible for the second Wednesday of the

month. Volunteers are always needed. If you are interested in helping,

please contact Carrie Engstrom at 815.761.7372 or sign up today!

Men’s Moving Ministry Delivers!

Men, come and help deliver furniture to people in need

for Love INC on the third Saturday of each month. All

men of the congregation are invited to join the group

next on Saturday, June 18. More help is always

welcome — especially some of you younger guys! This

is a great service opportunity right in our own

immediate area. Please join us! Contact the Church

Office with questions or to volunteer.

Set your calendar for the Annual Picnic!

First Lutheran’s Annual Picnic is set for

6:00 on Tuesday evening, June 28. Based

on positive feedback from members who

enjoyed last year’s picnic, we’ve reserved

the air-conditioned Terrace Room at

Hopkins Park again. Please bring a dish to

share and join in the fun of spending the

evening in the park. First Lutheran will

provide hamburgers and hot dogs, grilled to

perfection, along with table service and

beverages.

You are encouraged to bring folding chairs

and/or blankets to move onto the deck or

nearer to the Dee Palmer Band Shell to

enjoy the Municipal Band’s “Stargazing

Concert” — including our own Lynn (Cook) Hansen which will begin at 8:00 PM.

Sign up on the bulletin insert so that we will order enough meat for all who are

coming.

PLEASE NOTE: The Social Ministry Team will host, but several member s

cannot be present. Please consider volunteering to help us with setting-up (5:00

PM) and/or cleaning-up (7:30 - 8:30 PM).

Y’all come and enjoy!!

Soap for Lutheran World Relief

Bars of soap for Lutheran World Relief are being collected

through the end of May, and they have been piling up! The

big questions are … Will we collect more than last year’s

total of 1,186? Will we reach our goal of 1,300? If we

surpass our goal, Pastor Janet has been given a challenge —

which you can witness on June 5 during worship!

You can help make sure we do by bringing in as many full-

size bars (in their original wrapping) as you can. They will

be sent to Lutheran World Relief near Baltimore to be

shipped to those totally without access to soap. Your contribution will help many

live with more comfort and cleanliness, which can be literally life-saving. Hand-

washing prevents the spread of potentially deadly disease. So while you may not

look at a bar of soap as a lifesaving tool, it can be — so thank you for your

valuable gifts!

Page 5

Vacation Bible School Will Be Here Soon!

“Fearless” adventures begin June 20 when

Vacation Bible School gets underway at

Walcamp. Kids from Pre-K through Fifth

Grade will enjoy plenty of outdoor fun

Monday through Thursday with games, crafts,

Bible stories, music, and more!

Registrations are still being accepted, but

hurry, since space is limited. The camp fee,

which includes a T-shirt and CD of camp

songs, is $30. (Financial assistance is

available). Middle school students are

welcome to register as junior leaders.

All these activities need lots of adult

volunteers. Can you help as a crew, snack,

or art leader? Maybe you’d like to help with

games, fishing, or archery? Or lead songs or

Bible stories? Set-up and clean-up, providing

snacks, or helping kids sign in and out at church are other roles you could fill.

Please contact Kurt Oland, camp organizer, or the Church Office if you can

help make VBS a success by volunteering.

The congregation is invited to the hot dog dinner and concert of camp songs

on Thursday, June 23 at 5:30 PM.

New Pictorial Directory

Have you ever heard an announcement regarding a member

and wished you could put a face with the name? Are you a

new member and wish you had something to help you

identify other members? Help is on the way! We have

chosen Lifetouch Church Directories and Portraits for our

2016 Pictorial Directory Program. They have promised us a

WOW portrait experience as well as a ‘free’ directory to be

used to connect with one another.

The scheduled dates of photography are: July 28, 29, and 30

and August 10, 11, 12, and 13. Times are weekdays 2:00 -

9:00 PM and 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday. Time slots

will fill up fast — please call the Church Office to reserve

your appointment or sign up on the church website — www.firstdekalb.org

We’d love to have 100% participation from all of our members so we can

continue to build community here at First Lutheran Church. Watch for the

new directory sometime later this fall.

Anniversary Celebration Page 6

100th Anniversary Celebration Dinner

Saturday, July 16 As part of our celebration we will have a Swedish

themed dinner at the church. Special thanks to some

generous donors the dinner cost is covered but in order

to plan for quantities of food and to reserve your

‘place at the table’ you will need a ticket. Tickets will

be available in the Atrium after service beginning June

5th or call the Church Office.

On June 4th, 1916 a congregation held it's

last service in their church. The sadness of

that moment gave way to great joy as they

then walked three blocks to their newly built

church. They dedicated this new church with

hopes and dreams it would be around for

many years and that their congregation

would grow through many generations. 100

years later that church is still going and

growing as we worship there every week.

What a vision those people had for us!

We should celebrate and give thanks for those who came before us and

rededicate our building and ourselves to continuing the mission of hearing,

living, and sharing God’s word together. On Sunday, June 5th, we will

kickoff the celebration with a little history lesson, some pictorial displays

and a chance to share some stories. Lindsy Franzene (a fifth generation

member) has used her art talents to create some beautiful notecards of our

church which she will be selling with all the proceeds going to our youth

program. On June 12th we will focus on baptisms. We will reaffirm our own

baptisms as we witness and share in a baptism of a fourth generation

family member. June 26th we will focus on confirmation. July 10

th we will

celebrate weddings with an opportunity to renew vows after a service led by

a daughter of the congregation, Pastor Elizabeth Mascal. There will also be

a wedding display of photos and dresses and we'll share some wedding

cake. On Saturday, July 16th we will gather for a Swedish themed meal in

the evening. The following morning, Sunday, July 17th, we will gather for

worship as we rededicate our sanctuary and ourselves in the mission we

share. Please come and be a part of a joyful celebration as we give thanks

for all the blessings First Lutheran has been and will continue to be to so

many.

Let the Celebration Begin!

Prevention of the Zika Virus submitted by Cathy Foelske, R.N.

The White House and Center for Disease Control

(CDC) held a summit on April 1, 2016 to assist

States, Locals, and Tribal Nations with preparing

for the Zika Virus spread by the Aedes aegypti

mosquito. Phased plans range from dealing with

minimal infection to confirmed local transmission

to worse-case widespread local transmission.

No vaccine exists to prevent the Zika Virus from mosquitoes. Mosquitoes that

spread Zika Virus bite mostly during the daytime. Prevention of the Zika

Virus is to avoid mosquitoes by: 1.) Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

2.) Stay in places with air conditioning and window and door screens. 3.) Use

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) insect repellents with one of the

following active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon

eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol. When using as directed, EPA-registered

insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breast-

feeding women. Do not spray repellent on the skin under clothing. If you are

also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen before applying insect repellent. To

protect your child from mosquito bites: Do not use insect repellent on babies

younger than two months old. Do not use products containing oil of lemon

eucalyptus or Para-menthane-diol on children younger than three years old.

Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs. Cover crib, stroller, and

baby carrier with mosquito netting. Do not apply insect repellent onto a

child’s hands, eyes, mouth, and cut or irritated skin. Spray insect repellent

onto your hands and then apply to child’s face. Treat clothing with permethrin

or purchase permethrin-treated items. Do NOT use permethrin products

directly on skin.

Even if they do not feel sick, travelers returning to the United States from an

area with Zika should take steps to prevent mosquito bites for three weeks so

they do not spread Zika to mosquitoes that could spread the virus to other

people.

Endowment Match for VBS!

Let’s help make our Vacation Bible School, June 20-23, the best yet! You can

help ensure the success of this year’s VBS with a financial gift—and even

better, the Mission Endowment Team will double it! For every dollar up to a

total of $1,500, your gifts will be matched. Mark your envelope “Endowment/

VBS Match.”

Prelude —

Women’s Bible Study

Women, come join us for a Bible study

on the second and fourth Thursday

morning of each month. The Bible

Study will meet on June 9 and 23

beginning at 9:00 AM using the study

in the Gather magazine for women.

The group meets in the Community

Room. Come and join a lively

discussion and enjoy a cup of coffee

and the fellowship of your sisters in

Christ. Newcomers are always

welcome.

Naomi Circle News

Naomi Circle will meet on Thursday,

June 2 at 12:00 NOON in the Social

Hall for their annual luncheon. Pat

Johnson will give devotions and Jan

Setchell (chair ), Wenke Hansen,

Carole Johnson, Joyce Nelson,

JoAnn Nordeen, Otta Ritzman, and

Jeanne Smith will serve as hostesses.

Naomi Circle does not meet during the

summer months — their next meeting

will be on Thursday, September 1.

Altar Guild News

In this month of June your Altar

Guild will be preparing the

sanctuary for services, including

filling candles, setting up for

communion, and making sure the

space is ready. The month of June

will be covered by Stephanie Corn,

Amy Kuhns, and Kristina Oland.

Our next meeting will be held on

Tuesday, September 20, where we

will continue to fill out the schedule

and plan for fall. On the first

Sunday of the month, we will

continue to provide at least one

member by the altar to help switch

out trays.

Ever thought you would like to serve

the church in an exciting and fun

way, join us on September 20 in the

Community Room. We would love

to have you. Can’t make it that

night? Contact Stephanie Corn or

Terri Kuhns, or talk with Lynn in

our Church Office.

LWR Baby Care Kits

It’s Garage Sale time and the perfect time to

shop for Lutheran World Relief Baby Care

Kit items. Are you like me and don't need

another thing, but DO enjoy shopping -

especially for a bargain? Babies grow

rapidly and often outgrow their wardrobe

before much wear. Let's buy gently used items to care for babies living in

poverty overseas and bring to church at any time.

You can find the list of supplies needed in the Atrium (behind the

bassinet). If you are interested in sewing items, please see Sharon Wadle

for a guide.

Page 7

‘R’ Mission Center Needs You!

If you can use your hands, you can help make

quilts on June 1 and 15, when volunteers will

gather upstairs to help assemble quilts for

Lutheran World Relief. Volunteers of all skill

levels are needed and appreciated!

Meeting on the first and third Wednesdays from

9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and again during the evening

from 6:30 - 8:30, volunteers stop in for a short

time or stay all day or evening, working on tasks that always involve lots of

conversation and laughter. How wonderful to know that ‘God’s Work, Our

Hands’ means that many around the world will be provided with comfort and

shelter because we met to make these quilts.

You can also help provide cash for shipping, or needed materials: new fabric

(yard goods of any size); drapes and curtains (no sheers or fiberglass), blankets,

bedspreads, mattress pads, sheets, pillowcases; quilt batting, good quality

sewing thread; crochet or similar cord for tying;.

It’s important that all of these items be clean and in good condition. Please

leave donations in the basket in the Atrium. Thank you!

A Word about Our Intern

Preston Fields is originally from the mountains of east Tennessee, just

outside of the great Smoky Mountain National Park. He spent his early life

in Knoxville with his parents and two younger sisters. After 13 years of

Catholic school, he attended Maryville College where he studied

International Studies and Religion. Following college, Preston spent a short

time in the political arena before returning to Maryville College's Center for

Campus Ministry, where he served as the Director of Community

Engagement. While working, he also obtained a Masters of Social Work

from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, focusing on mental health

counseling. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Divinity from the

Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Preston married Wesley Lyons, a

large animal veterinarian who works for Bethany Animal Hospital in

Sycamore in October 2014. They are both proud (some might say fanatical)

supporters of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. They have two dogs,

Chaco and Oakley.

Preston is excited about joining us on August 1 and we look forward to

welcoming him. Preston promises to be a wonderful addition to the ministry

at First Lutheran Church.
