“I will tell of all your wonders” Psalm 9:1
2
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I
will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness
be known to everyone. The Lord is
near. Do not worry about anything,
but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let
your requests be made known to
God. And the peace of God, which
surpasses all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in
Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:4-7
Well, this is it, the final time I will write to you
as your Student Pastor. Thank you for this
time we have shared these past two years and
the 26 before that too!
I am so grateful for the time that I have been
blessed to be a part of this congregation. We
raised both our daughters here, and I have so
many wonderful memories of those that are
now departed, and those who are still present
being a part of our lives and the life of this
congregation.
I served under a wide variety of pastoral
leaders which has given me so much
inspiration.
I began by joining the choir and teaching
Sunday school, and evolved into an office
assistant, a council member and president,
and a youth & music director, I never would
have guessed any of those things would have
happened when I became a member here.
Well, the choir part because I just gotta sing!
Which led me to be a part of both bands that
have existed in my time with you, Joyful Noise
and The Spirit Within. Such wonderful music
and musicians this place has been blessed to
have.
You have raised me up through Bible studies,
supported me as a Lay School student,
assisted me with my Chaplaincy education,
and now have helped me through my first two
and the beginning of my third year of
seminary, WOW, what a ride!
Thank you does not seem like enough, but it is
what I can offer.
As this journey winds down and we begin
going our separate ways, I do want to rejoice
as the verses from Philippians state, I wish
you all peace and joy and look forward to our
paths crossing in the future.
Peace & joy,
Carol

Music and Worship
This is Choir recruitment time and your FLC Choir
needs YOU! A few more voices are needed to
maintain our current vitality. You need not commit to
every week by any means; just come when you are
able. You will be welcome anytime. Below are some
reasons current choir members gave to join choir.
1. It’s fun
2. Improves your breathing
3. Best seats in the house
4. Lightens your heart
5. Gets you out of the house
6. Raises your endorphins
7. You are needed If you have any questions, contact a choir member or
Patty Van Landschoot at 715-634-0379.
Choir Recruitment
The Spirit Within will be sharing their music
at worship services in October. Saturday, October 22, The Holden Evening
Service.

both services.

Within) will be playing a benefit concert on
Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 7:00—?? pm.

Lumberjack Bowl. They will be raising funds for
the Northwoods Humane Society and The
Hayward Community Food Shelf.
Choir

During October the Choir will sing at the
following worship services:
Sunday, October 2 at 10:45am
Saturday, October 8 at 5:00pm
Sunday, October 16 at 8:15am
October 30, Reformation Sunday, at the 10:45am
worship service, we will celebrate three young men
who will publicly affirm their baptismal promises.
Connor Abric, Jakob Shaw, and Tommy Tiffany, have
completed their Confirmation class education and will
now take this new step in their faith lives. We invite
everyone to come and celebrate this day with these
young men.
Affirmation of Baptism
Confirmation Service
Reformation Sunday The weekend of October 29 & 30 we will celebrate
Reformation, our very Lutheran tradition of Martin
Luther nailing the 95 Thesis to the door of the church in
Wittenberg. Come and celebrate this annual event,
wear red if you like as it will be the color of the day.
This year marks the 500th anniversary of this event, so
as a congregation this can be a great weekend to kick-
off many other opportunities to recognize Martin Luther
and other Reformers who have brought us to where we
are today in our faith tradition.

Thank You! To My First Lutheran Church Family,
I cannot thank you enough for all the
caring, love, and support that was
given to me throughout Don’s illness.
Don had a strong faith and he was
comforted in the knowledge that he
knew he was going to a better place.
He went quickly and peacefully, which
is what he would of wanted. My family
and I felt very blessed to be surrounded
by such a caring church family.
I would also like to thank all the
members of Peace Circle for their
cards of comfort and caring. It is
comforting to kow that one is not alone,
but surrounded by a family of caring

First Lutheran Church sponsors the
“Day 1” weekly segments on radio
station WRLS-FM (92.3). These
segments air at 8:30am every
Sunday.
“Day 1”, a voice of mainline Christian churches,
presents messages by clergy representing mainline
Christian faiths, including those of the ELCA. Peter
Wallace, host for each broadcast, facilitates discussion
with clergy on timely topics. This radio ministry reaches
our shut-ins, visitors to the area, and others for whom
regular worship and church affiliation are not a part of
their daily lives. The cost per broadcast is $30.
The sponsorship of a broadcast may be in honor of a
person, or special occasion, or in memory of a loved
one and is open to all.
DON’T MISS THE BOAT!

those in need, please understand that for privacy
purposes we are unable to include submitted names

Message from Youth & Education Director by Tiffany Chipman
The air is getting crisp
now and leaves are
falling all over the
ground. It’s time to
carve pumpkins and
drink hot apple cider. School is running at
full speed and so are the activities here at
FLC! The church is buzzing with youth
programs, activities and excitement! Fall is
so fun and brings all sorts of busyness
together for me. (My favorite kind of
busyness.)
Our youth education programs are so much
fun; but what have we been up to you ask?
Terrific Tuesdays (Grades K-3)
Lessons, snacks, and let’s not forget GAGA!
We are having so much fun in our times
together on Tuesdays. This year we have
taken a new direction in our learning by
focusing each week on a different story of
the Bible that follows along with our
lectionary of our worship services. Along
with our lesson or story of the week, we play
a game or do a craft that connects as well.
Each week we also have a great group of
older students that help out by passing out
lessons, helping with spelling, cutting, or
drawing, and other items needed in our
Youth Ministries.
Wednesday Nite Live (Grades 4-8)
This is our newest program added to Youth
Ministries.
If you haven’t been able to come to join our
worship, I encourage you to stop by and
check it out. Every Wednesday in the
Sanctuary starting at 6:00pm. Our pre-
confirmation class is having fun digging into
our Bibles and learning more of the Word of
the Lord. And, our confirmation class is
jumping into the Old Testament.
Sunday School (Grades Pre-K—5th)
Classrooms are “cereal” for learning the
Word! Each week we are taking a new fla-
vor of cereal by surprise and learning what
it would have in common with the Lord!
Emma Bratley is snapping in our Pre-K/
Kindergarten class. Paige Sulley is crack-
ling with our 1st—3rd graders, and I am
popping with our 4th & 5th graders. This
curriculum will take us through until our
break over Christmas.
Blessings to all —

Faith In Action
WOFL, MOFL and the Outreach Committee are
again beginning the annual Operation Christmas
Project. Last year we gave boxes of food,
along with mittens, hats, scarves, and children’s
gifts to 200 families in Sawyer County. This year
once again we plan to provide Christmas
Blessings to 200 families with your help and the
caring help of Hayward United Methodist Church
and Accession Episcopal Church.
We will begin taking telephone calls and
completing request forms for food boxes on
November 28, 2016, with the last day to take
requests on December 9, 2016.
Distribution this year will be Friday, December 16
from 2:30pm—6:00pm, and Saturday, December
17 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. We are fortunate
again this year to purchase food through Feed My
People at a much reduced price. Because of this
we are asking you again to consider a monetary
donation.
The Operation Christmas bulletin
board will have red and green tree
tags for the needed $10 to $15 gifts for children,
through grades 12. Please take a tree tag,
purchase and wrap the gift and tape tag back on
the gift. Gifts can then be placed in the large gift
wrapped box by the bulletin board. Because of
size variation, clothes are not recommended. Gift
cards are a great idea for teens! The LAST day to
bring gifts in will be Monday, December 12, 2016.

UPDATE ON LUTHER
PARK SUMMER
FUNDRAISER
Every year Luther Park has a
summer fundraising event.
Donations for this fundraiser
comes from the churches and
various people. This year
$23,000 was raised! Our Cover Girls sent down
five quilts (three large quilts
and two baby quilts) for this
auction. The total of these
five quilts raised $450. The
Cover Girls are happy to be a
part of this fundraising which
supports Luther Park where
our children go to Bible
Camp.
Many, many thanks to the
generosity of the members of
First Lutheran Church. We
asked for school supplies and
you, the members, stepped
forward. The congregation
collected 80 packpacks (9 more
than last year) and over 600
other items (colored pencils,
pens, pencils, crayons, glue,
folders, notebook paper, loose
paper, markers, etc. All of these
items have been taken to the
schools (Hayward and LCO) and
were given out the first week of
school. Both schools were so
grateful for the donations. Once
again, our congregation has
opened their hearts and pocket
books for the good of the
community. Thanks to all of you
for making this a success!
TRANSIENT PROJECT
Faith In Action Team (FIAT)
has announced that for now
they do not need any more
toiletries for the transient
project. Thank you for all
your generous donations to
this program in the past. We
will let you know when more
products are needed.
Thank you,

First Lutheran Church Women
When God’s Not Fair:
Coming to terms with a merciful God
October is the month of fall colors,
fall festivals, color tours, raking,
preparations for our northern
winters, and little children out trick or
treating.
I always like the colors of fall and of
decorations this time of year.
I like to change things in my house,
to tell of this season. This time of the year our church is
busy with plans for the
Scandinavian Dinner and Operation
Christmas. We are people who are
looking to the future. Looking for
ways that God would like us to grow
and to reach out to others. We, as
Women of First Lutheran Church,
are called to discipleship in Jesus
Christ and empowered by the Holy
Spirit to engage in ministry. May
God bless us as we move forward.
Our lesson this month in the Gather
magazine is:
Jesus and the evil eye: When God
blesses the undeserving. Bible study session two:
“When God Forgives the Guilty”
Jesus’ parables show us a God who
has ditched the scales and
scoreboard in favor of generosity for
all—deserving or not. How do we,
like Jesus’ followers, come to terms
with a God who gives to those who
haven’t earned it? The lesson is
taken from the book of Matthew
20:1-7. The Parable of the Workers
in the Vineyard. We will see what a
gracious God we have. Jesus says,
“The kingdom of heaven is like a
landowner who went out early in the
morning to hire workers.”
Jubilee Circle will begin a
new DVD series called Living the
Questions. The October study
will begin with “An Invitation To
The Journey.” All are invited to
join them in their evening
studies. May God bless you as
you study His word together.

I would like to take this time on
behalf of the FLCW to thank Student
Pastor Carol Braun for her
leadership and generous gift of her
time these past months. She has
been a wonderful gift from God at
our time of need. Bless her journey
as she accepts the call to Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church in Iron
River, WI., and her continuing
studies to become an ordained
minister. May God bless you and
keep you; may His face shine upon
you and give you His peace.
Carol, we will miss you!
God bless our Church and all its
members; may we always keep our
eye on you Jesus our Savior and
Lord. May we always be a church
that reaches out beyond our
boundaries to those in need.

An Evangelical Minute
That’s right—OUR lifesaving
work through ELCA World
Hunger & Lutheran Disaster
Response. As a congregation
and as individuals, we join our
gifts with legions of others to
bring hope and help into the lives
of others here at home and in
nearly 60 countries.
These two outreach efforts of
our greater church (ELCA) are
focused on innovative solutions
that get at the root causes of
hunger & poverty. They are
totally dependent on gifts from
ELCA members and
congregations. Because they
have recently shared an updated
mailing that is especially helpful
to understanding their (OUR)
work here & abroad, plans are to
feature excerpts from the same.
This goes along with their other
effort & it includes ELCA
members. Quoting from the
mailing, “We engage ELCA
members in advocacy & hunger
education to act & speak in ways
that can make a difference.”
The following story is quite
close to home, underlining the
work done right here in the U.S.
& is entitled:
Help for the Neighborhood
When William “Big Bill”
Hogan was 16, he yearned to be
a chef. Working in a number of
restaurants over the past 30
years, his experience fostered a
calling to serve people facing
hunger. When he saw
restaurants throwing away
hundreds of pounds of food each
night, he asked if he could have
it to feed hungry neighbors out of
his apartment. With food in
hand, Bill began serving. Members of Galilee Lutheran
Church in Roseville , Minn., took
notice & today, Help For the
Hood, a meal ministry, is part of
Galilee’s outreach to neighbors
who go hungry, especially at the
end of the month when
resources for food become
scarce. The ministry has
become especially important
during the summer when school-
age children are home. “After 30 years in the food
business, I’d rather have a
ministry than a restaurant”, Bill
said. “Giving back feels good.”
Students, ages 11-18, help
prepare & serve meals & acquire
job skills along the way. Bill
mentors the students & teaches
them the basics of running a
small business & the importance
of money management. The
students also receive a stipend
for their work.
Ler Say, 14, is one of the
young members of his staff.
Born in Burma, he helps cook,
serve food, and clean up the free
lunchtime meals. “It’s
heartwarming to help people
out.” says Ler. This is a really
good job with good people and
we make a brighter future for
everyone. It’s good job training
experience for me, too.” Thanks to your gifts to ELCA
World Hunger, more people in
Roseville and communities
across the country have food for
today and skills for tomorrow.
Ler adds a personal message to
supporters like you: “Please
thank them truly and deeply,”
Our Father in Heaven,
May we be stirred as we spend
time over the next months to
more fully realize how we,
indeed, are a part of these
important outreach ministries.
We ask blessings upon those
directly involved with working
with those in need. May these
glimpses into the stories of some
of the countless ways in which
people have been helped
through these ministries move us
to action wherever need arises. In Christ, Amen

Lectionary Readings for October 2016
October 9, 2016
Time after Pentecost
It’s a miracle!
Multiple miracles! The waters
of holy baptism have healed us.
The body and blood of Jesus in
holy communion have made us
clean. We have died with
Christ and been raised with
him. For all this we have
returned to offer thanks. From
this place we are sent on our
way rejoicing to share the
good news.
2 Kings 5:1-3; 7-15c
Psalm 111
2 Timothy 2:8-15
Luke 17:11-19

Time after Pentecost
Pray always.
Do not lose heart. This is the
encouragement of the Christ of
the gospel today. Persistence
in our every encounter with the
divine will be blessed. Wrestle
with the word. Remember your
baptism again and again.
Come regularly to Christ’s
table. Persistence in our every
encounter with the divine will
be blessed.
Genesis 32:22-31
Psalm 121
2 Timothy 3:14-4:5
Luke 18:1-8

Time after Pentecost
Genuine repentance and
pretentious piety stand in stark
contrast in the gospel and all
around us. All creation stands
in need of God’s forgiveness.
Keep the faith. God’s people—
”all who have longed for his
appearing”—shall be
accounted righteous for Jesus’
sake. Our God is merciful to
sinners. For all this the
assembly glorifies God forever.
Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22
Psalm 84:1-7
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
Luke 18:9-14

Time after Pentecost
On this day we celebrate the
heart of our faith: the gospel of
Christ—the good news—that
makes us free! We pray that
the Holy Spirit would continue
to unite the church today in its
proclamation and witness to the
world. In the waters of baptism
we are made one body; we
pray for the day that all
Christians will also be one at
the Lord’s table.
Jeremiah 31:31-34
Psalm 46
Romans 3:19-28
John 8:31-36

A little faith goes a long way is
our Lord’s point in the gospel.
A mustard seed’s-worth has
miraculous potential. The
patience, tenacity, and
endurance required for the life
of faith are the blessings
received in water and the word
(holy baptism), bread and wine
(holy communion), the word
read and proclaimed in this
assembly. Anticipate them.
Receive them with
thanksgiving.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
God's work. Our hands.
We are a church that is deeply rooted—and always being made new.
We are deeply rooted. The Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America is still comparatively new as a
church body, and yet our roots are much deeper
than our 25 years together. The taproot of our life
extends through the histories of predecessor
churches in the United States, through the
formative witness of the 16th century evangelical
reformers and their confessional writings, to the
Scriptures and the word of Christ. Our life is in
Jesus Christ. We are deeply rooted in his word of
forgiveness and the promises of God’s steadfast
love and mercy. The word of Christ dwells in us
richly. God nourishes us as one body in Jesus
Christ with companions from around the globe
who meet us at Christ’s table of grace.
We are being made new every day. In Jesus Christ we
are not unchanged. What God does in Christ is as
radical as the death and resurrection of baptism, where
new creatures in Christ rise to live “no longer for
themselves, but for him who died and was raised for
them.” God is bringing that new creation to life
among us in the ministry of reconciliation. In that
service we no longer see each other as we did before.
We are no longer strangers, competitors or enemies to
each other. We are beloved companions in one body,
restored to a communion where the rich diversity of
our experiences, wisdom and abilities serve the
common good in Christ. The new creation in Christ
rises to life among us every day.
