But tradition recognizes the 1621 feast between the Pilgrim settlers at Plymouth Colony and neighboring American Indians as America’s first Thanksgiving. Sailing from England aboard the Mayflower, the Pilgrims arrived in present-day Massachusetts in the fall of 1620, yet remained on the ship for several months. When the colonists moved ashore the following spring, they were visited by two English-speaking Indians, Samoset and Squanto, who showed the Pilgrims how to hunt and grow their own food. Squanto also served as an interpreter and mediator between the settlers and the neighboring Wampanoag tribe. Sometime between Sept. 21 and Nov. 1, the Pilgrims organized a feast to celebrate the success of their first crop. Around 90 Wampanoag, including Chief Massasoit, joined the colonists for the festivities, which lasted for three days and included games, singing and dancing, in addition to the elaborate meal. The Pilgrims’ records indicate that regional fowl, such as ducks, geese, swans and, yes, probably turkey, were served at the feast, along with venison brought by the Wampanoag. Historians believe that other foods present at the meal included fish and shellfish, beans, onions, porridge made from cornmeal, berries, squash and pumpkin—but no pumpkin pie.

COF andNeighborhood News

COF at the Skirball.

Hello, Everyone! For the past months we have

been talking about brain health, and how to slow down cognitivedecline.

I want to talk about somethingsimple, low cost and maybe someof us are not maximizing. I amtalking about physical exercise.Exercise seems to slow, andperhaps even halt or reverse thebrain atrophy that typically startsin a person’s 40s, especially in thefrontal region of the brainresponsible for executivefunctions.

In other words, exercise canincrease the brain’s volume ofactual neurons, and connectionsbetween neurons. This is possiblebecause physical exercise triggersbiochemical changes that promoteneuroplasticity or the productionof new connections betweenneurons and even of neuronsthemselves.

I am sure you are wonderinghow much exercise and what kindof exercises are the mostbeneficial?

In terms of frequency, itappears that the best regimenincorporates, at a minimum, three30- to 60-minute sessions perweek. With regard to type ofexercise, the key words toremember are “aerobics” and“exercise.” Physical exerciseincludes both aerobic exercise andanaerobic exercise, which aredistinguished by the reliance on adifferent energy source. Exercisedoes not have to be strenuous, and even simply going for a walkcan have a positive brain effect.

I hope this information washelpful. If you want to talk moreabout this topic, again, pleasedon’t hesitate to visit me in theNeighborhood area. Have a greatmonth of November!

Nurse’s NotesTips for a Thinner

Thanksgiving!Gaining weight during the holidayseason is a national pastime. Didyou know that most people gain

at least a pound during theholiday, some even gain more?Worst is most people keep that

weight on permanently. The good news is with a little

knowledge you can indulge intraditional holiday fare and stillenjoy a guilt-free Thanksgivingfeast. After all, being stuffed is agood idea only if you are a turkey.

Get Active: Eat less and exercisemore during the holidays toprevent weight gain. Boost thefrequency of your fitness routinethe weeks ahead of the feast. Takea walk early Thanksgiving day andthen again after dinner if you areup to it. It is a wonderful way forfamilies to get physical and enjoythe holiday at the same time.

Eat Breakfast: Eating a smallmeal in the morning may give youmore control over your hunger.Start your day with a healthybreakfast, preferably one withprotein and fiber which may helptake the edge off your cravingsand allow you to be more sensiblelater in the day during the“big feast.”

Watch your Portions: Beforefilling up your plate, evaluate thebuffet table and decide whatyou’re going to choose. Don’t

squander your calories on foodsthat you can have all year long.Indulge with small portions ofholiday favorites so you can enjoyyour traditional favorites

Best Bets on the Table: Whiteturkey meat, plain vegetables, roasted sweet potatoes, mashedpotatoes and defatted gravy tend tobe the best bets because they arelower in fat and calories.

Skip the Seconds andLeftovers: Try to resist thetemptation to go back for secondhelpings or leftovers. You are lesslikely to overeat and have moreroom for a delectable dessert. Butonly one slice of that pumpkinpie!!!

Say ‘Yes’ to SweetPotatoes

Take advantage of seasonallyfresh sweet potatoes when you seethem on menus this fall. A betterchoice than regular potatoes ifyou’re watching your blood sugar, they’re also an excellent source ofvitamin A, which can reduceinflammation in your joints.
