In 1578 Queen Elizabeth I granted a patent to Humphrey Gilbert for discovery and overseas exploration, marking the beginning of the first British Empire.

Ended with the loss of the thirteen American colonies, after the great American War of Indenpence.

British in the Americas

England’s first permanent settlement in the Americas was in 1607 in Jamestown. This was led by John Smith and managed by the Virginia Company.

1602 Plymouth was founded as a haven for the Pilgrims.

1707 the Kingdom of Great Britain was established with the Treaty of Union.
