2016 has proved to be another successful year for the Fire District. We continued to expand our services to meet the growing needs of our community.

We are proud to announce that the Huntley Fire Protection District received international accreditation on August 18, 2016; becoming one of just over 230 accredited fire agencies in the world. Fire Service accreditation is administered by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) and requires an embedded culture of quality throughout an organization.

Maintaining accreditation is a significant undertaking and requires the combined best efforts of all members of the fire district. Accreditation necessitates the development and maintenance of several key documents including a Community Driven Strategic Plan, Self-Assessment Manual (SAM), and a Standards of Cover (SOC) deployment analysis.

Last year, the District developed specifications and contracted with Foster Coach Sales to build a new ambulance to replace our 2008 Med-Tec ambulance. The new ambulance will have state-of-the-art features and delivery is expected in January of 2017.

What is Accreditation?

Accreditation is a comprehensive assessment and evaluation model for fire and emergency service organizations. The accreditation process helps to determine community risks and fire safety needs, evaluates the performance of an agency, and provides a method for continuous improvement. The accreditation and certification bodies change requirements over time, requiring accredited agencies to continue to evolve and improve.

Cooking is the top cause of holiday fires, according to the USFA. The most common culprit is food that’s left unattended. It’s easy to get distracted; take a pot holder with you when you leave the kitchen as a reminder that you have something on the stove. Make sure to keep a kitchen fire extinguisher that’s rated for all types of fires (ABC), and check that smoke detectors are working. If you’re planning to deep-fry your holiday turkey, do it outside, on a flat, level surface at least 10 feet away from any people or structures.

Illinois winter brings hazardous conditions caused by snow, wind and freezing temperatures. Please help us to keep fire hydrants visible and clear of snow and ice after each snowfall. As you are shoveling, clear a path approximately three feet around the hydrant, as well as a path from the street to the fire hydrant. This helps to ensure that we can access your the water supply as quickly as possible in case of an emergency.

Candles may be pretty to look at but they are a cause of home fires — and home fire deaths. Remember, a candle is an open flame, which means that it can easily ignite anything that can burn.

Candles and Kids

Think about using flamelesscandles in your home. They look

and smell like real candles.

Never leave a child alone in a room with a burning candle. Keep matches and lighters up high and out ofchildren’s reach, in a locked cabinet.

“CANDLE WITH CARE”

KKK Blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.

KKK Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn.

If you Do buRN CANDLEs, make sure that you...

KKK Use candle holders that are sturdy, and won’t tip over easily.

KKK Put candle holders on a sturdy, uncluttered surface.

KKK Light candles carefully. Keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame.

KKK Don’t burn a candle all the way down — put it out before it gets too close to the

holder or container.

KKK Never use a candle if oxygen is used in the home.

KKK Have flashlights and battery-powered lighting ready to use during a power outage. Never use candles.

of year for home candle fires.

Candle Safety

The incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December than during other months. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas/Christmas Eve and New Year’s/New Year’s Eve. (The fifth is Halloween.)

To reduce the danger, maintain about a foot of space between the candle and anything that can burn. Set candles on sturdy bases or cover with hurricane globes. Never leave flames unattended. Before bed, walk through each room to make sure candles are blown out. For atmosphere without worry, consider flameless LED candles.

If you do decide to burn candles, follow these tips to ensure that you “candle with care”:

The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge was created in an effort to promote Firefighter Fitness utilizing activities that firefighters are required to do while on duty. Fire departments from across the world participate in the obstacle course style competition. The Huntley Combat Challenge Team was developed in an effort to promote physical fitness within the Huntley Fire Protection District to better serve citizens. The team started its 2016 season in Indianapolis during an annual convention. This was one of the largest regional events the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge has seen in its 25 year history with a roster of over 120 individual competitors and 28 relay teams from various departments. The Huntley Combat Challenge Team placed 1st in the Team Category and 2nd place in the Relay Category. The team later traveled to Haverhill, Massachusetts where they placed 2nd in the team category and 2nd place in the relay. The Team has

plans to travel to a regional event in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri in September, in addition to the Nationals in October. At the national competition they will compete for the title of fastest department in the nation.
