The cost of warThe Seven Years War• France had a very hostile relationship with

both Britain and Austria. However, by the 18th C France had resolved her differences with Austria and they were allies in The Seven Years War (1756-1763) against Britain.

• France and Austria suffered crushing defeats at the hands of the British and much of its overseas territory had been lost to the British (1763).

The Cost of WarThe American War of Independence• Following her defeat in the seven years war

France dreamt of revenge on Britain. Her opportunity came decided to aid the Americans who had rebelled against British rule. Although France actually won the war cost a great deal of money and in the short term worsened the already weak financial situation of the crown. Also French soldiers had been exposed to ideas such as liberty and democracy and many demanded similar rights for the people of France.
