“We pay the HST on all watersofteners”

Aquarius Water Treatment in Elora is having a sale! We will pay the HST on all wa-

tersofteners throughout the month of February.

With an Aquamaster Water Softener, you’ll save on operating expenses by using up to 50% less salt and up to 80% less water per regeneration than conventional softeners. Aquamaster is the only appliance with a separate, built-in, whole-house, self-cleaning dirt and sediment filter. It operates on 12-volts while other softeners use at least 24 volts.

The Aquamaster can regenerate in as

little as 15 minutes while conventional softeners can take nearly two hours. Aquamaster has a packed resin bed and a larger reserve capac-ity aiding in regeneration with clean, soft water. Drop by and talk to Simon or Barbara for details.

PLUMBINGWith spring just around the corner, it’s time to get to those

plumbing problems you’ve been put-ting off all winter.

At Aquarius Water Treatment it’s not just about how your water tastes, but where it goes. If your drains are running slowly, we can clean them out. If they are leaking, we can repair them. If your taps are loose or leak-ing, we can change them or if your water softener is not working, we can repair or replace it.

Aquarius Water Treatment is more than just water softeners and reverse osmosis units - we are a full-service PLUMBING company. Owner Si-mon Davies has more than 15 years in the service end of plumbing. He’s

also worked 10 years in the construc-tion and remodeling of factories work-

ing on all types of piping from acid lines to gas lines.

So if it is a repair or replacement give us a call or drop by, we would be happy to hear from you! Aquarius Water Treatment is located at 195 Geddes St. in Elora, 519-846-9090.

Get your feet ready for spring at Fit To Walk

If you have foot orthoses and they do not seem to work for you, there are a couple of factors to consider:

1) Did you give yourself time to get used to them?

2) Have you been back for a follow-up visit with the dispensing professional and doctor?

3) Are you wearing them for the activities they were designed for?

4) Are you wearing them long enough to make a difference?

5) Are you wearing them with properly supporting footwear?

After the adjustment period, for orthotics to work, they must be comfortable to wear. If they are not comfortable, they will probably end up in the closet or in the garbage.

Orthotic design and construction are important factors to ensure effectiveness. Orthotic shell materials and thickness have to be adapted to the user’s individual requirements. The orthotic shell length is important for even distribution of forc-es across the longitudinal arch. The orthotic should be posted (angled) as needed to provide effective alignment.

Footwear is of extreme importance for the effectiveness of your orthoses. For more information, whether you are wear-ing orthoses or not, call or make an appointment for a no-ob-ligation biomechanical evaluation by a Certified Pedorthist at 519-843-7979. Evaluation, casting and manufacturing are all performed on site at 135 St. David St. S. at “The Olde Livery”.

How to protect your vehicle and...Do hamsters like tuna salad?

Life is short. Your questions matter. My name is Ken Buehler, and I would like to continue answering your fascinat-ing email questions.

Dear Ken,How do I protect my vehicle so that it

will last?

Amanda Huginkiss Monk, Ontario

Dear Amanda,Great question! After all, your vehicle

is a major investment. With tough eco-nomic times, nobody likes the cost of vehicle repairs. The best way to prevent break downs and emergency repairs is regular vehicle inspection and main-tenance. Vehicle maintenance means keeping all the systems and features functioning well. Here are some ways to proactively tend to your vehicle’s main-tenance needs:

Oil and Oil Filters: Replace the dirty oil and filter to help protect the inter-nal parts of the engine from premature wear. We strongly recommend, for most vehicles, 5,000 km intervals for the best

return on your vehicle investment.Transmission: Automatic transmis-

sions have become more sophisticated with additional gears and computerized electronic controls. We recommend ev-ery 60,000 kilometres service intervals.

Cooling: The coolant or anti-freeze used in today’s modern engines has a very important job; it must conduct heat, and prevent corrosion of the various metals and components in the system, among other things. We recommend re-placing coolant every 2 years. One of the reasons for doing this is the additive packages break down.

Brakes: Often, one of the most over-looked to-do maintenance procedures is to service your brakes annually. This

will extend the life of your brake com-ponents and provide optimal braking power.

Dear Ken,Do hamsters like tuna salad?

Hamster BoyDamascus, Ontario

Well, fish is okay to feed to a hamster, but your hamster may stink. Some foods that hamsters like to eat are apples, car-rots and lettuce. Don’t ever feed your hamster candy -- too much sugar. And only feed him or her small amounts so it won’t get mouldy in the cage.

We’ll answer more questions next month. Visit us at Buehler Automotive in Alma (we’re located at the lights). Visit buehlerauto.com or call 519-846-9221.

Ken Buehler can answer anything

Not all companies selling water softeners can be trusted. For the past few years, many

Centre Wellington residents have been approached by water testing companies that are conducting door-to-door solici-tations (often focusing on elderly home owners) with the aim of selling water softeners, water purifiers and sometimes ‘no salt water softeners’.

Greg Montgomery at Watermatters says these companies are fraudulent. Their softeners not only cost more, their claims of “softening water without using salt or electricity” are inaccurate. Their units “de-scale” the water which means the hardness is not removed. In short, cus-tomers will not get what they pay for.

Take your business to a local water treatment store that will be accountable

to every customer for their products and their service. Watermatters in downtown Fergus offers dependable Kinetico Water Softeners, quality purifiers and reverse

osmosis water along with natural spring water. Unlike less efficient single tank systems, Kinetico water softeners have one tank that is always available to pro-vide soft water while the other regener-ates or waits to go into service. When one tank needs to regenerate, service automatically switches to the other tank. The tank in service not only provides soft water to your house, but it also provides soft water to the other tank so it can recharge with clean, soft water for opti-mum results.

If you’re in the market for a water softener, Kinetico is about to make some exciting new announcements this month, so drop by and see Greg for more details. Call 519-843-4753 or drop by their loca-tion at 180 St. Andrew St. W. Fergus store.

The staff at Herbal One in Fer-gus can do more than fulfill your new year’s resolutions -

they’ll help you keep the weight off...for good! They offer a long-term solution by teaching you nutritional eating hab-its and they’ll show you how to make smarter choices when it comes to man-aging your weight.

Maggie Kurtz, the new owner of Herb-al One in Fergus, knows what it’s like to struggle with her weight. Out of all of the weight-loss programs she tried, only Herbal One produced the results she was looking for.

With the knowledgable friendly coach-es and the flexibility with eating out and food choices, they can help you become successful.

Maggie says most people eat on the run, they eat too much take-out, they skip meals or they over eat too late in the day. She recommends you prepare your meals ahead of time. This includes eating more meals at home with more veggies and fruit. With the Herbal One

program, you eat fresh food bought from your local grocery store and not expen-sive, prepackaged meals that don’t taste real. Herbal One will also provide you with quick tasty recipes and meal ideas that your family will also enjoy.

Maggie also suggests that you pre-pare yourself when eating out. Instead of ordering fries, order a baked potato. Stick to proteins, vegetables and healthy starches and avoid fried foods.

Besides the nutritional planning of Herbal One, you receive support from Herbal One coaches, as well as guidance on weight management.

Drop by Saturday, February 9th from 9-3 for Herbal One’s Open House/Well-

ness Day. Enjoy a coffee and healthy snacks. Receive a free mini massage or spiritual healing session.

Stop by to see their full retail line of wellness products. Receive a gift bag with area business sponsors or win a door prize. Meet Barbara Waldner, nu-tritionist along with the staff.

Stop in to learn about their weight loss programs or packages (cleanses, home plans, quick loss kits, and more). They are also offering 70% OFF a full weight loss program.

Herbal One offers programs for chil-dren, teens, adults and seniors, along with specialty programs for individuals with medical issues.

Ask about their NEW “Pay as you go” weight-loss programs.

Herbal One is not as pricey as you’d think and consultations are free.

Please visit them at 794 Tower St. S., (M&M Plaza) Fergus. Call 519-787-9990.

New bundled service packages for your pet

Though no one likes to talk about it, finances play a major role in how we care for our pets. Everyone always wants to do their

best, but cost of care is an issue. In the past, people have resorted to insurance plans (which are still a good option) or to just keeping veterinary care to a minimum. This often leads to crisis situations. As an example, we often encounter cases where an ill-ness has been ongoing for a few days (abnormal stool or decreased appetites are good examples). Own-ers sit by, patiently waiting for things to improve. After all, how many times do we feel a little “off” or ill and get better on our own????

Owners spend money on over the counter remedies from pet stores. Nothing improves. They buy multiple types of food, des-perately seeking the one that Mr. Whiskers will eat, or that will reduce Fluffy’s projectile poos, but no improvement. They call every relative seeking advice. No dice. Finally, they decide to consult with a professional - Dr. Google. Yet all of the rem-edies, suggestions and information on the internet lead to the same place - Fluffy just doesn’t get better.

They finally concede defeat and ring the vet to make an ap-pointment. Now, not only do they have an initial examination to pay for, but medications and more. Usually, these cases are far worse by day 7 than they were on day 2. This usually war-rants more extensive diagnostics and therapy, because the pa-tient develops secondary problems. In the long run, this often costs more money (and more grief for Fluffy) than if they saw the vet in the first place.

Does this make the pet owner a bad person? Do they get an “F” in their pet care report card? No - they are just being people, and they are hoping to avoid unnecessary expense.

But what if there was a way to make veterinary care more accessible? Imagine if, for a monthly fee, you could have a se-

lected group of services from your vet. For example, 2 annual physicals per year, appropriate vaccinations, a nail trim and blood work. Your monthly payment would allow you access to these services throughout the year. That means no saving up to get vaccines, no agonizing over the expense of lab work. Just walk in, and you are good to go! Nice idea, but what differ-ence would it make in our initial scenario, for the sick pet? Well, what if the monthly fee also allowed you to

drop off your pet to get them “checked” out at no extra charge? So, if Mr. Whiskers doesn’t eat for a day, drop him off and get him checked out. Sure, you would have to pay for additional tests or medi-

cations, but you would save the cost of the vet visit. So, for the dog with ongoing diarrhea, instead of waiting until day 7, you could get them looked at on day 2! No messing about with home remedies and “trying different things”. Your worries about in-curring extra expense are reduced. And if there is nothing wrong with your pet, or no therapy suggested, you don’t pay. Wow!

This is exactly what is happening at the Arthur Veterinary Clinic. We are, as of February 1, 2013, offering bundled service packages. For a monthly fee (paid via credit card, pre-authorised payment or post-dated cheques) you can have access to a selec-tion of routine annual services (like vaccinations, physical ex-aminations and dental cleaning). Members of these health plans also have the privilege of dropping their pets off at the clinic (on a pre-scheduled basis) for assessment by a veterinarian. They do not pay extra for these examinations and are only financially responsible for additional testing or medications. What an easy way to manage pet care! If you are interested in our bundled services and how they may be of assistance to you in the care of your pet, please feel free to contact the Arthur Veterinary Clinic at 519-848-2536.

We are always welcoming new patients!

How to manage workplace conflictDo you run a business with employees?

You run your business to be productive so that it is profitable. Then, conflict

enters the workplace. What do you do to address the conflict both effectively and efficiently so that productivity and profits are not affected?

Conflict in the workplace is not pleasant! It’s not productive! Organizations today focus on results, finding better solutions to optimize performance. Therefore we must be able to effectively resolve issues, settle differences and implement solutions on every level.

When we talk about conflict, we are not necessarily referring to aggressive confrontations or arguments. Conflict is simply any situation in which one person’s concerns are different from those of another person. Conflict can mean a heated argument or a simple difference of opinion. The distinction lies in the importance of the issue and the amount of energy you put into it. If you don’t know how to deal with it, conflict can mean stress as well as a loss of time and money. Your employees become unhappy; you’re unhappy; productivity goes down, and so do your profits.

Beyond Rewards is hosting Conflict Management for Supervisors and Managers Workshop at the Centre Wellington Chamber of Commerce, 400 Tower St. Fergus on Tuesday,

March 26th for 1 day only from 9 am to 4 pm.You’ll take the TKI (Thomas Kilman Instrument

Assessment) and become aware of your own conflict style. You will be able to better assess conflict situations and recognize the conflict management styles of others.

Specific objectives are to help you:• Recognize and understand the conflict styles of

others so that you can respond in a more productive way.

• Assess conflict situations and apply the most appropriate modes.

• Practice different conflict-handling modes in a safe environment to expand your skill and effectiveness in dealing with conflict.

This intense interactive workshop will provide insight into your own conflict style and provide you with the necessary tools to productively manage difficult, conflict situations. Parking is available. Be sure to register early since space is limited. Senior Human Resource Management Consulting is also available one-on-one to address employee relations and management issues within your workplace.

Call 519-821-7440 or visit beyondrewards.ca for more information on this workshop or to inquire about a customized training program for your workplace.

RRSP Alternative for Incorporated Business Owners

For many employed Canadians a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is the only real tax shelter that is easily accessible. The Tax Free Savings Account

(TFSA) option has clouded the picture, but if your taxable income will be higher than roughly $81,000 (after deducting RRSP contributions) then the RRSP is likely still the best option. However, if you are an incorporated business owner in Ontario your company has access to the small business deduction which results in a flat 15.5% tax rate on the first $500,000 of taxable income. Similar to an RRSP this results only in a “deferral” of tax as additional tax is payable when funds are taken out of your company either by way of salary or dividends. The optimal salary-dividend mix is a moving target but for a variety of reasons (which are beyond the scope of this article) many business owners are choosing to take their remuneration strictly as dividends. Consider a business owner who regularly takes a $40,000 dividend each year out of his company and pays personal tax. If his or her company invested surplus funds that generated Canadian source dividend income (from say blue chip Canadian publicly listed companies) how much extra tax would be paid, either by the corporation or personally, on the first $40,000 of additional income? If your answer is zero, you are correct and understand the corporate taxation of investments very well.

So an obvious alternative to taking additional funds (which are taxable) out of your company to invest in an RRSP is to just invest the funds at the corporate level and enjoy the built in deferral from the small business deduction. If selling the shares of your company in the future is a possibility then a sister company can be created to hold the investments. In the long

run the corporate investment account can become a retirement source of funds that is drained on a tax efficient basis. The key difference being that the business owner is in full control of how much is taxed personally, unlike the RRSP withdrawals that are forced at age 72 and often end up forcing the individual into claw back of Old Age Security. In addition the opportunity exists to plan for a lower tax bill on death (or second to die if married) unlike the RRSP account that is added in full to the final tax return (also second to die if married). This planning is very individual specific and involves issues that could not be fully covered here so a complete review with your financial advisor is highly recommended.

Stop!

Before you drive to the city to shop for mattresses, drop by Sleep Rite in Fergus. They will price-match all of their competitors and even beat their price by 5%! What a great reason to shop local and stay in town this month.

Buying a new mattress can be a confusing and even frustrating experience. Sleep Rite’s sleep consultants, Syed and Marlene, want to help you by finding out what’s causing your aches and pains. Then they’ll recommend the right beds to try. The rest is up to you!

“Take your time, try them out in all the sleeping positions you use,” says Marlene. “Our stores in Fergus and Hanover provide a relaxed, stress-free environment so you won’t feel rushed. We will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision, but ultimately, your body will tell you the right bed for you.”

Have you ever wondered why you wake up in the morning, but you’re still tired? The experts say you didn’t get a deep sleep and you didn’t get enough REM sleep. A deep sleep repairs

muscle and tissue while boosting your immune system. REM sleep rejuvenates your mind. When you’re able to get that uninterrupted Deep/REM sleep, you’ll wake up rested, restored and rejuvenated.

Six hours of deep, REM sleep is worth more than nine hours of broken sleep. What interrupts our sleep? Tossing and turning, your partner’s movement and general discomfort effect your body’s pressure points causing you to change position

several times a night.

If you wake up tired, stiff and with aching muscles and joints, your mattress could be a big part of the problem. A good night sleep starts with a comfortable and supportive mattress. The right mattress reduces tossing and turning, improves circulation and alleviates pressure points resulting in more hours of deep restorative sleep.

A good night sleep rejuvenates the body, improves motor activity, boosts your immune system and improves your memory.

Elora Home Hardware’s team can transform your kitchen

Steve and Louise Cako of Elora are amazed at their brand new kitchen, beautifully transformed into something straight out of a home improvement show.Stunning shaker style espresso cupboards,

(with contemporary door pulls). Antique-looking travertine stone backsplash.

New sink, faucets and over the range microwave.Neutral colored counter tops tie it all together.

This gorgeous kitchen is brought to you by the talented team headed by Patty, and the affordable products found at Elora Home Hardware.

Interior designer Charlene, along with their excellent tile installer Paul and fantastic cabinet installer Gary from Elora Home Hardware, transformed the Cako’s tired old kitchen into an updated masterpiece with seemingly little effort. And, they worked with the couple to incorporate existing elements to bring the cost down. They even kept the existing flooring and still pulled off a modern kitchen any home reno show would envy.

Charlene first brought samples right to the couples’ home, they chose their products and within only 3 days, Elora Home

Hardware were able to get everything in for the kitchen remodel. The whole project took 3 weeks including work to the bulk

head. Not only were the cupboards and backsplash replaced, but Patty’s team replaced the sink with a Kindred, and added sleek Moen faucets. They even replaced the microwave with an over the range microwave which throws light onto the stove - a feature Louise loves. And because everything was ordered from Elora Home Hardware, the Cako’s enjoyed a discount. The one-stop shopping meant the project went smoothly and Steve was happy that he did not have to run to a big box store to find it.

Stylish, solid and affordable. Patty’s formidable Elora Home Hardware team flexed their muscle and delivered an amazing, up-to-date custom looking kitchen at an extremely affordable price. Patty stated “Our kitchens are good solid design at an affordable price which is a combination that is hard to find”.

“I wouldn’t have changed a thing,”says Louise approvingly. Once again thank you Steve and Louise for allowing the team

into your home. Come see them at Elora Home Hardware - 6458 Wellington

Rd. 7. Call 519-846-5393. Remember to ask about their No Payment Plans!

Are you prepared for all of life’s events?

Life is full of many expected events. Some create wonderful long lasting memories, while

others leave us scarred and wanting to forget. In the past six months, I’ve received two

invitations to attend Zumba fundraisers, to help support families who have suffered a devastating cancer. My thoughts were how terrible and I prayed for a healthy recovery for these individuals.

While you can’t always prevent bad things from happening, you can look to protect yourself against some common risks. You purchased car insurance in case you have a car accident, and home insurance in case of a fire or theft, but are you covered for other risks that may have a major impact on your life?

Which of the following risks would make a big difference in your life?

* Your car is stolen* Your house is broken into* You’re too ill to travel on your big trip* You lose your family jewellery item* You are diagnosed with cancer

Are you insured for the items on the list? If you’re like most Canadians, chances are you’ve said “no” to the last risk. Most

of us don’t expect to suffer a critical illness like a heart attack, stroke or be diagnosed with cancer, but these events happen and life is unpredictable.

Facing a critical illness can be emotionally and physically devastating. It can lead to unexpected costs that may not be covered by your provincial or employee health plans, and the last thing you want to think about as you recover is how to cope with the financial burden. That’s why there is critical illness insurance.

Planning is the cornerstone to having your risks covered. When you purchase

your investments, you are asked what type of investor you are and what risk are you willing to take to invest in certain investments? Purchasing insurance should be considered in the same way. What are you willing to risk by not purchasing insurance? The risk of not earning an income should be your first priority and there are insurances to cover those risks.

Although some things we cannot change, like death, illness and taxes, there are ways to protect our loved ones and ourselves. Take the time to plan and educate yourself on all your options.

Plan, protect, invest, and grow.Call Stacey at Sentry Group for more information at 519-

Don’t Sign Your Mortgage Renewal Yet!

Mortgage consumers can miss out on a lot if they simply sign their lender’s mortgage renewal form

and mail it back. A mortgage renewal anniversary represents

a great opportunity to seek a mortgage product and rate that best fits your needs. A lot can happen over a five-year term, for instance, so it’s best to meet with a mortgage broker to ensure your mortgage fits your current and future needs.

And when it comes to your mortgage rate, it’s important to know that lenders often send renewal agreements at “posted” rates, as opposed to “discounted” rates.

The difference between paying posted and discounted rates can be quite significant , normally 1%-2%. You can also think of working with a mortgage broker as paying wholesale versus retail rates on your mortgage. Thanks to the large volume of mortgages that brokers place with lenders each year, brokers are able to offer their clients discounted rates.

This means that by spending an hour or less talking to a mortgage broker, you can often save $2,000-$4000 in interest per year (not per mortgage term – per year!) on a $200,000 mortgage.

This savings would pay for a nice vacation, help you trim down other debt, or offer some extra cash to put towards an RRSP or your children’s education.

Keep in mind that there are no legal fees or penalties associated with the transfer of your mortgage at your scheduled renewal date. And, in most cases, working with a

mortgage broker is free. Brokers are paid by a lender when they successfully place a mortgage with that lender.

It’s interesting how consumers will often spend hours shopping for a new TV or vehicle, but they do not often spend time shopping for the biggest investment they’ll likely make in their lifetime – their mortgage!

So, instead of waiting until you receive your mortgage renewal notice in the mail – they’re often sent out just before the renewal date so you may not have time to shop – remember that you can arrange a new mortgage up to 120 days before the renewal date and lock in the rate with your broker.

Mortgage rates are currently at historic lows, so now is a good time to lock in rates!

Rates, however, are not the only consideration to make when shopping for a mortgage. There are many options such as fixed, variable or combination mortgages (which include a mix of both fixed and variable components), short and long terms up to 10 years, and secured lines of credit.

A broker can discuss the best options to suit your needs and select the ideal lender offering that will best meet your unique requirements. You can contact Roger Hicks, Mortgage Agent with Dominion Lending Centres, at 519-546-3772, or by email at [email protected], to discuss the best option for you.

Do you have a cold or the flu? With an array of treatment options

available, it’s important to recognize the differences between the common

cold and the flu as you treat each one differently. A flu can lead to serious health complications, so it’s often a greater health concern.

WhAT CAUSES COLDS AND FLU?Colds and flu are caused by viruses. There are

more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold but only a few known viruses that cause influenza (the flu). That’s why it’s easier to develop vaccines to protect against the flu (flu shots) but not against colds. There are two main types of flu virus: influenza A and influenza B. Viruses change over time, so new flu shots are needed each year.

WhAT’S ThE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLD AND ThE FLU?

Colds and flu have many symptoms in common such as cough, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat and fatigue. However, the flu tends to begin more quickly, has more severe symptoms than a cold and is more likely to cause high fever, aches and pains, headaches and

exhaustion.WhAT TIMES OF yEAR

DO ThEy OCCUR?Flu is most common between November

and April. About 5-20% of people may get the flu in any given year. Both colds and flu are more prevalent during the colder months.

Next time you need to choose a cold or flu remedy, consult your Shopper’s Drug Mart Pharmacist for a Health-Watch Cold

and Flu Symptom Assessment. In Elora, Shopper’s Drug Mart is located at 89 Geddes St. Call (519) 846-5379.

In January’s Booster, we offered the second in a three-part series on helpful tips for looking after your hearing aids. Here is

the next part in the series of hearing aid care from Ward Hearing Centre in Fergus...

Troubleshooting Guide(Brian Ward will happily explain to you how

to do the following tips first):Problem: The volume drops

• Low battery - replace the battery.• The receiver (hearing aid speaker) or sound

outlet is blocked with earwax - gently clean the receiver outlet with the tools provided, and/or change the supplied cerumen (earwax) filter.

• Blocked microphone inlet - gently clean the microphone opening with the tools provided (this is usually best done by a qualified professional due to the delicate nature of the microphone).

Problem: The instrument “whistles” or “beeps” when in your ear

• The instrument is not correctly inserted in your ear - insert it again (use lubricant such as “OTOEASE”, or anti-itch lotion “EARGENE” first).

• The instrument is in the wrong ear - insert it in the other ear (the red dot is for the right ear, the blue dot is for the left ear).

• The fit of the instrument is too loose - consult Brian.• Sickness, weight gain or weight loss may affect the fit (weight

change of only plus or minus 5lbs is enough to cause a poor fit) - consult Brian.

Problem: The instrument does not produce sound

• There is no battery - insert a battery.• The battery’s inserted backwards - ensure

that the battery is sitting in the battery door with the “ringed” side facing the correct side of the battery door (today’s hearing aids often have a diagram of the proper battery position printed on the inside of the battery door).• The battery compartment is not shut - fully

close the compartment.• The battery is dirty - clean the battery surface (sometimes the

residue from the new battery sticker remains on the “positive” (+) side of the battery and prevents the battery contacts from making necessary connection to power your hearing aid).

• The battery is exhausted - insert a new battery (Remember - you usually need to replace only one battery if there is no sound - if there’s still no sound after one battery is replaced, it is likely that a different problem is occurring).

• The sound outlet, speaker (hearing aid speaker) or microphone are plugged with debris - gently clean or consult Brian.

Problem: The instrument slipsout of your ear

• The ear canal is too wet or dirty - wipe the hearing instrument and your ear with a soft cloth.

Problem: The instrument hurts your ear• The instrument is incorrectly positioned - remove

and re-insert the hearing aid/earmold.• Consult Brian if discomfort persists.

Problem: The instrument is difficult to insert

• Place a small drop of non-irritating lubricant on your finger (Brian recommends the lubricant “OTOEASE”) and onto the canal portion of the earmold or hearing aid. Ensure that no lubricant enters the receiver or microphone openings (if you experience issues with a frequently itchy ear canal, you may want to use the anti-itch lotion “EARGENE”, which will keep away the itch while working as a lubricant to ease insertion of your hearing aid - both “EARGENE” and “OTOEASE” are available at Ward Hearing Centre).

ImportantIf the suggestions above do not solve the problem,

call Brian at (519) 843-4327 for a thorough no-cost cleaning appointment. If you’re having trouble with your hearing, but have been putting off getting it checked, contact Brian Ward from Ward Hearing Centre to have a no-cost complete hearing assessment that will determine if there is a need for hearing aids, and if so, which style of hearing instrument is best suited to your lifestyle and needs.

Whatever your assessment results, you can rest assured that the caring, professional people at Ward Hearing Centre will treat you first-rate with only your best interests in mind. Ward hearing Centre is located in Unit #2, 135 St. David Street S. (inside the Old Livery Building) in downtown Fergus. Free parking is available directly behind the Old Livery across from the Brew House. Call (519) 843-4327.

Ear infections can be excruciatingly painful. Sleepless nights. Loss of

appetite. Pulling on the ears. Your child screams in pain. You feel so bad for them and wish you could just take it all away.

And they keep coming back in your child’s ears. Antibiotics don’t seem to help for long. Maybe surgery has even been recommended.

Conventional thinking is to treat the infection with antibiotics. But there are many problems with this approach. The infection can be viral, making the antibiotics useless. Also, repeated doses can lead to drug-resistant bacteria, creating superbugs and leaving your child still screaming in pain. Studies also confirm that even in bacterial infections, antibiotics are of little help (Lancet Journal 2006).

In addition to that, over half a dozen medical studies have proven early use of antibiotics causes asthma in children. The most recent study being in the 2007 medical journal Chest, stating … “asthma was significantly more likely to develop in children who had received antibiotics in the first year of life to age 7 years.”

Another all too common treatment for chronic ear infections is ear tube surgery. The problem with surgery is at least 25% of ear tube surgeries performed are unnecessary, according to a study done at the Children’s Hospital

in Boston. Other research shows that of the kids who get tubes, many require repeated ear surgeries throughout their childhood.A Drugless Solution to Ear Infections

Over the past 20 years, I’ve seen many children’s ear infections respond with chiropractic care. This gentle, drugless approach I use to help ear infections has been clinically proven to help your children get well and stay well.

The ear canal is related to tiny muscles and nerves in the upper neck. If these nerves and muscles are “stressed” and not working properly, the ear canal will not drain. The ears will become clogged and then infected.

The use of gentle techniques that are safe for infants and toddlers, have many toddlers recovering naturally from ear infections. And the great part about chiropractic care helping your child heal from ear infections is that studies confirm it has a lasting effect. In the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics, research showed that even 6 months after chiropractic treatments, 9 out of 10 children did not have another ear infection occur in that time.

Will It Work For your Child? Most parents are tired of giving their

kid one antibiotic after another and are not excited about the possibility of ear tubes.

So why not try a natural, drugless approach first. Try chiropractic because it could make a difference to your child and give you peace of mind. To find out more, please call 519-843-1500 for your no-charge consultation.

How you can save on your next renovation

Centre Wellington residents hire Mark Kater-berg from MK Contracting for a variety of jobs. He recently removed wallpaper, then

painted, installed baseboard, trim and hardwood floor-ing at a local residence. The home owners thought about hiring a painter and someone else to install the hardwood flooring, but it would have cost more and it would have taken longer. Better to go with one com-pany like MK Contracting to do the entire job. This winter, he’s been busy performing interior renovations including basements from start to finish.

Experienced in home construction and renovation, Mark’s main focus is in the area of exterior work which encompasses siding, windows, doors and eavestroughs. Mark has the exper-tise to install ENERGy STAR RATING thermal windows and patio doors as well as exterior siding with full manufacturers

and workman warranty. In today’s high energy costs, Mark provides the best solution for you.

Mark is a local lifetime resident of Centre Wel-lington. He is involved in local sports both as a par-ticipant as well as a supporter. He is a firm believer in community and as such has thrown his time and financial support into local interests. He was raised in a construction family and at a young age eagerly learned the tools of the trade. Mark lived and breathed

construction and dreamed of one day owning his own company.

MK Contracting is a member of the Centre Wellington Con-tractor’s Association. For everything from renovating, expand-ing or creating living spaces, to replacing windows and doors, call Mark at MK Contracting, 519-820-6433 or email him at [email protected]
