The Feast of the Holy Family T he Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother the Virgin Mary, and his foster-father Joseph. We know very little about the life of the Holy Family through the canonical Gospels. They speak of the early years of the Holy Family, including the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the flight into Egypt, and the finding of Jesus in the temple. While the exact details of the day-to-day life of the Holy Family may be unknown, we can still learn a lot from the stories we do have. Devotion to the Holy Family is a recent development, but one that naturally grows out of a love for Jesus and his family. Devotion to the Holy Family grew in popularity in the 17th century, and several religious congregations have been founded under this title. The Holy Family also became portrayed in popular art of the period. On October 26, 1921 the Congregation of Rites (under Pope Benedict XV) inserted the Feast of the Holy Family into the Latin Rite general calendar. Until then it had been celebrated regionally. Popes before and including Benedict XV (especially Leo XIII) promoted the feast as a way to counter the breakdown of the family unit. Today the Church celebrates the Feast on the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day (Known as the Feast of Mary Mother of God in the Catholic Church). If both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Sundays, no Sunday exists between the two dates, so the Church celebrates the Holy Family Feast on December 30th. If the feast falls on the 30th, attendance is not obligatory. Up until 1969, the Holy Family feast was kept on the first Sunday after the Epiphany. It was transferred to its current date in 1969. The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our own families too. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our homes. This is called the "domestic church" or the "church in miniature." St. John Chrysostom urged all Christians to make each home a "family church," and in doing so, this sanctifies the family unit. Just how does one live out the Church in the family? The best way is by making Christ the center of family and individual life. Ways to do this include: reading scripture regularly, praying daily, attending Mass at least on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, imitating the actions of the Holy Family, going to confession frequently, and so forth, all done together as a family unit. Commentary for the Readings in the Extraordinary Form: Sunday in the Octave of the Nativity "Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel" (Gospel). This prophecy that Jesus is also "a sign that shall be contradicted," indicates what we, too, may expect as "sons of God"; yet it strengthens our hope, if we but place ourselves daily under Mary's care; then the last words of the Gospel may also be applied to us: "the Child grew and became strong. . .full of wisdom." Yes, we are the "sons" and heirs" of God, Whom we can call "Father," because of "His Son, born of a woman," Mary (Epistle). Hence, Jesus, our Brother, actually "leapt down from heaven. . .with beauty. . .with strength" (Introit), to "direct our actions" in His "Name" (Prayer). In the Gradual we offer our "good word" of gratitude for the final victory. Then we will realize that Antichrists "who sought the Child's life are dead" (Communion Verse). The Feast of the Holy Family

T he Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother the Virgin Mary, and

his foster-father Joseph. We know very little about the life of the Holy Family through the canonical Gospels. They speak of the early years of the Holy Family, including the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the flight into Egypt, and the finding of Jesus in the temple. Commentary for the Readings in the Extraordinary Form: Sunday in the Octave of the Nativity

"Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and for the rise of many in Israel" (Gospel).

This prophecy that Jesus is also "a sign that shall be contradicted," indicates what we, too, may expect as "sons of God"; yet it strengthens our hope, if we but place ourselves daily under Mary's care; then the last words of the Gospel may also be applied to us: "the Child grew and became strong. . .full of wisdom." Mass Intentions

Having the Holy Sacrifice of Mass offered is more effective than flowers or memorial gifts for your deceased loved ones or as a special intention for a living person or special occasion. Mass Intentions can be placed in a “Mass Intention” envelope and placed in the collection basket or given to the priest or the appropriate person at your parish. Please indicate if the person is living or deceased and the date you would like the Mass to be said. Mass dates are filled on a “first-come, first-serve” basis. Now is the time to make your requests for specific dates in the upcoming year. Please get your requests to the appropriate person at your parish.

A Prayer for the New Year O sacred and adorable Trinity, hear our prayers on behalf of our holy Father the Pope, our Bishops, our clergy, and for all that are in authority over us. Bless, we beseech Thee, during the coming year, the whole Catholic Church; convert heretics and unbelievers; soften the hearts of sinners so that they may return to Thy friendship; give prosperity to our country and peace among the nations of the world; pour down Thy blessings upon our friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and upon our enemies, if we have any; assist the poor and the sick; have pity on the souls of those whom this year has taken from us; and do Thou be merciful to those who during the coming year will be summoned before Thy judgment seat. May all our actions be preceded by Thy inspirations and carried on by Thy assistance, so that all our prayers and works, having been begun in Thee, may likewise be ended through Thee.

Charitable Giving As the year draws to a close, many begin to consider giving

to charitable organizations. Our parish community offers several opportunities for giving as a 501(c)3 organization:

The parishes of St. Patrick’s, St. Boniface, Good Shepherd

Mission are always very grateful for the generosity of all who contribute to continue the missions of our parishes. Checks can be made payable to the parish you wish to support.

The St. Patrick’s Catholic School Annual Fund is an ongoing fundraising effort that helps to fund our parish school, keeping the cost of education down. Checks can be made to St. Patrick School Annual Fund.

The Pipe Organ Renovation/Restoration Project at St. Patrick’s Church. "In the Latin Church the pipe organ is to be held in high esteem, for it is the traditional musical instrument which adds a wonderful splendor to the Church’s ceremonies and powerfully lifts up man’s mind to God and to higher things" (article 120, "Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy," Vatican II). All gifts are tax-deductible. Contact the Parish Office for more details.

Our parish school is also blessed to benefit from The St. Patrick School Foundation, an invested fund of over $1.8 million, that provides a portion of the returns to our school each year. The Foundation's mission is to ensure the long-term stability and viability of St. Patrick School through a combination of fundraising and investment. Checks may be made to The St. Patrick School Foundation.

As you consider your end-of-year charitable giving, please consider one of the above, that our parishes and school may continue to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ here in Lewis County and beyond for many years to come!

Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary

If you didn’t get a copy of “ Jesus, and the Jewish Roots of Mary” by Brante Pitre at one of the Christmas Masses, please pick up a copy today.

Bestselling author of Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist casts new light on the Virgin Mary, illuminating her role in the Old and New Testaments. Are Catholic teachings on Mary really biblical? Or are they the “traditions of men”? Should she be called the “Mother of God,” or just the mother of Jesus? Did she actually remain a virgin her whole life or do the “brothers of Jesus” refer to her other children? By praying to Mary, are Catholics worshipping her? And what does Mary have to do with the quest to understand Jesus? In Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary, Dr. Pitre takes readers step-by-step from the Garden of Eden to the Book of Revelation to reveal how deeply biblical Catholic beliefs about Mary really are. Dr. Pitre uses the Old Testament and Ancient Judaism to unlock how the Bible itself teaches that Mary is in fact the new Eve, the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven and Earth, and the new Ark of the Covenant.

10th Anniversary CD’s Available Cd’s are still available of Fr. DeViese’s 10th Anniversary Mass in June. Call 304-269-3048 to request your copy.
