THE FEAST OF THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME NOVEMBER 9, 2014 The first basilica of Rome, a renovated place of the Lateran family, was consecrated on this date in 324 as the Church of the Most Holy Savior. Nearby communities of monks lent it the name of Saint John. Saint John Lateran is the pope’s basilica. Fire and earthquake have repeatedly destroyed the structure; each time it has been rebuilt with care. “The beauty and the harmony of churches, destined to render praise to God, invite us human beings too, though limited and sinful, to convert our- selves to form a ‘cosmos’, a well-ordered con- struction,in close communion with Jesus, who is the true Holy of Holies” (Saint John Paul II). At the time of his conversion the Emperor Constantine gave to the Bishop of Rome the Lateran Basilica, a meeting hall on the Coelian Hill in Rome. Legend has it that on November 9, 324, this basilica was dedicated to the Most Holy Savior. The baptistry of the basilica was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, And in the middle ages the entire basilica was rededicated in his honor. This basilica remains to this day the cathedral church of Rome and thus a monument of great importance to the Western Church. Like all feasts of dedication, this is a feast of the Lord and thus displaces the Sunday celebration in ordinary time. // God has always sought to dwell among his people. No building made by human hands can really contain him. // There were sanctuaries made by human hands, those first sanctuaries where the stammering faith of the patriarchs discovered with dread that God was there; that tent of meeting which fluttered in the desert wind when Moses conversed there with God face to face; and finally the temple of Jerusalem which fixed the presence of the Lord Sabaoth among his people. Very soon, however, despite their attachment to Jerusalem, the prophets were struggling to liberate the chosen people from a false sense of security. They had come to believe that the presence of God was guaranteed by a stone building (cf. Jer 7). It is rather in the hearts of a faithful people that God wants to dwell. // By faithfully frequently the temple, Jesus shows himself to be the worthy successor of those who love the Lord and seek his presence. His teaching about the “Father’s house” prepares for a new order where the ancient cultic sanctuaries give way to his own person (John 2:21). With the death of Jesus, the veil of the sanctuary is torn (Heb 10:19-22). The true sanctuary is now the Body of Christ, the community of believers. The churches made by human hands will now be at the service of this community. ST. Our thanks to RITA AND STINEY SKAVINSKY for hosting the FPC for Vocations this week. Sign up in vestibule. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE : Anyone can be “saint” in front of strangers but the daily acts of patience, acceptance, forgiveness, listening, and dying to oneself within the family are religious acts. Family life is the turf of sanctity. PRO-LIFE REFLECTION : A reality of war is the MIA (missing in action), those who did not return home. In the war on the pre-born, 57,000,000 human beings are missing in action as well. They, too, did not return home. Those soldiers who did not return from war, and those pre-born who died are all a great loss to our nation and weaken us as a country. STEWARDSHIP : “For we are God’s fellow workers…” – 1 Corinthians 3:9. We are called to help God build His kingdom on earth. We are His eyes, ears, hands and voice on Earth. By giving of our “first fruits” of our time, talent and treasure we help fulfill God’s call. Are you doing all you can to help? Do you spend time in prayer every day?
