DID YOU KNOW?

1. On average Ryde Carlileans consume around7000 calories on Christmas Day (a big step upfrom the recommended daily calorie intake of2000 to 2500). Lucky they swim a lot.

2. According to data from Facebook, two weeksbefore Christmas is one of the two most populartimes for couples to break up. However,Christmas Day is the least favourite day forbreakups (phew!)

3. Rudolph’s nose is red because researchers say itis richly supplied with red blood cells to stop itfreezing and to help with the exertion ofdelivering presents to good children (please noteRyde Carlile swimmers) around the globe.

NEW CLUB CAPTAINS:

Each year the Ryde Carlile Club Committee elects two captains and two vice captains to helppromote and encourage involvement in the Club from our swimmers. The criteria for clubcaptains are as follows:

1. swimmers who are 16 years and over at the beginning of the summer season2. swimmers who are actively competing for the club3. swimmers who demonstrate a commitment to club events4. swimmers who are positive role models for other swimming members

It was a tough decision this year for the Committee as there were lots of good candidates whowould do a great job for the Club. In the end, the elected Club Captains are:

CHRISTMAS RACE NIGHT - 19th DECEMBER:

It was a great night’s swimming on the 19th December as part of the annual Christmas FridayNight Races. Santa was in attendance, there was some great racing, great prizes and theinflatable was more popular than the swimming.

METRO NORTH WEST SPEEDO SPRINT SERIES HEATS:

The Metro North West Speedo Sprints Series Heats will be held at Blacktown Aquatic centreon Saturday 7th February 2015, commencing at 1pm (warm-up 12.30pm). All events are50m.Entries are online on the Swimming Metro North West website at http://metronwnsw.swimming.org.au/. Entries close at 11:59 pm on Friday, 23rd January, 2015.This meet is open to swimmers aged 8-13 years of age. (Age as at 7th February 2015).There are no qualifying times. As long as your child can swim 50m in strokes entered, theycan enter. If your child has never swum in a carnival before, but enjoys Friday Night Racesand would like to try swimming in a carnival this is the ideal first meet.To encourage as many of our younger members to enter Speedo Sprints, Ryde CarlileSwimming Club will be reimbursing the event entry costs for all races the child swims at thismeet. (Event withdrawals for whatever reason will not be reimbursed).

SENIOR SWIMMERS JUST DANCE:

It’s a tradition for the Ryde Carlile Silver and Gold female swimmers to carve up the dancefloor (well the basketball court at the pool) each Christmas for no particular reason. It wasstanding room only as huge crowds watched a highly choreographed and extremelyprofessional dance routine. Featuring all your Christmas favourites as well as an ode to Sia’sChandelier, the girls rocked da house. Apparently next year, the boys are keen to get involvedwith their own dance moves…

The One Thing Successful People Never Do

Success comes in all shapes and colours. You can be successful in your job and career but youcan equally be successful in your marriage, at sports or a hobby. Whatever success you areafter there is one thing all radically successful people have in common: Their ferocious driveand hunger for success makes them never give up.Successful people (or the people talking or writing about them) often paint a picture of theperfect ascent to success. In fact, some of the most successful people in business,entertainment and sport have failed. Many have failed numerous times but they have nevergiven up. Successful people are able to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and carry ontrying.I have collected some examples that should be an inspiration to anyone who aspires to besuccessful. They show that if you want to succeed you should expect failure along the way. Iactually believe that failure can spur you on and make you try even harder. You could arguethat every experience of failure increases the hunger for success. The truly successful won'tbe beaten, they take responsibility for failure, learn from it and start all over from a strongerposition.Let's look at some examples, including some of my fellow LinkedIn influencers:

Henry Ford - the pioneer of modern business entrepreneurs and the founder of the FordMotor Company failed a number of times on his route to success. His first venture to build amotor car got dissolved a year and a half after it was started because the stockholders lostconfidence in Henry Ford. Ford was able to gather enough capital to start again but a yearlater pressure from the financiers forced him out of the company again. Despite the fact thatthe entire motor industry had lost faith in him he managed to find another investor to startthe Ford Motor Company - and the rest is history.

Walt Disney - one of the greatest business leaders who created the global Disney empire offilm studios, theme parks and consumer products didn't start off successful. Before the greatsuccess came a number of failures. Believe it or not, Walt was fired from an early job at theKansas City Star Newspaper because he was not creative enough! In 1922 he started hisfirst company called Laugh-O-Gram. The Kansas based business would produce cartoons andshort advertising films. In 1923, the business went bankrupt. Walt didn't give up, he packedup, went to Hollywood and started The Walt Disney Company.

Richard Branson - He is undoubtedly a successful entrepreneur with many successfulventures to his name including Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Music and Virgin Active. However, whenhe was 16 he dropped out of school to start a student magazine that didn't do as well as hehoped. He then set up a mail-order record business which did so well that he opened his ownrecord shop called Virgin. Along the way to success came many other failed ventures includingVirgin Cola, Virgin Vodka, Virgin Clothes, Virgin Vie, Virgin cards, etc.

Oprah Winfrey - who ranks No 1 in the Forbes celebrity list and is recognised as the queen ofentertainment based on an amazing career as iconic talk show host, media proprietor,actress and producer. In her earlier career she had numerous set-backs, which includedgetting fired from her job as a reporter because she was 'unfit for television', getting fired asco-anchor for the 6 O'clock weekday news on WJZ-TV and being demoted to morning TV.

J.K. Rowling - who wrote the Harry Potter books selling over 400 million copies and making itone of the most successful and lucrative book and film series ever. However, like so manywriters she received endless rejections from publishers. Many rejected her manuscriptoutright for reasons like 'it was far too long for a children's book' or because 'children booksnever make any money'. J.K. Rowling's story is even more inspiring because when she startedshe was a divorced single mum on welfare.

Bill Gates -co-founder and chairman of Microsoft set up a business called Traf-O-Data. Thepartnership between him, Paul Allen and Paul Gilbert was based on a good idea (to read datafrom roadway traffic counters and create automated reports on traffic flows) but a flawedbusiness model that left the company with few customers. The company ran up lossesbetween 1974 and 1980 before it was closed. However, Bill Gates and Paul Allen took whatthey learned and avoided those mistakes when they created the Microsoft empire.History is littered with many more similar examples.

So, the one thing successful people never do is: Give up!

RESULTS:

NSW State Open Water Champs December 2014

There were 13 competitors (6 men, 7 females) from Ryde Carlile who competed at the NSWState Open Water Championships at Penrith. Distances swam ranged from 2.5kms throughto 5kms. Conditions were on the tougher side with strong winds and hot conditions so PBswere at a premium.Ryde Carlile finished a creditable 24th out of the 70 odd clubs that competed.
