Huntley’s Bryce Only does it allBy PATRICK [email protected]

The team was split in half for a scrim-mage Saturday afternoon during the Huntley boys basketball practice. Bryce Only’s squad wore black jerseys with dark red numbers. The other half wore home whites.

As time expired, the senior point guard drove to the basket, stopped, pivoted then scored on a fadeaway 12-foot jumper.

“You realize why you lost right, White?” Red Raiders coach Marty Manning rhetorically asked after the drill as the teams blended in a huddle. “Because Bryce scored all of their points.”

Manning said he would joke with Only, as a freshman, about having “one of the ugliest shots I’ve seen.” So it wasn’t a surprise when Only made Huntley’s var-sity basketball roster for other reasons, including his defense.

“The first drill we did with him his freshman year, we did a defensive lane slide, zig-zag drill,” Manning said. “He busted his hump through the whole drill, and I asked him to make one small change, which he did, and all of a sudden he was our best defensive player in the program and it didn’t take long at all.”

That athleticism is why Only is headed to Nebraska on a baseball scholarship.

“Baseball is most definitely my first love,” Only said. “I spend all of my time,

when I’m not here in the gym or doing school work, at the cages hitting.”

When asked if he ever feels tired or burnt out because of his no-rest lifestyle, he just shrugs it off and attributes his competitive drive to the early lessons he learned from his father.

When Only was a young boy, he and his dad would go to the local YMCA and prac-tice basketball. Shooting drills, dribbling and passing.

“He had me doing drills every day starting at the age of 6,” Only said with a laugh as he remembered the sessions with his dad. “We just did drills all the time until I was in fourth grade, and I wanted to play baseball. I didn’t go back to playing basketball until seventh grade.

“We had tryouts at the middle school and I was terrified because I hadn’t picked up the basketball in so long and I didn’t think I was going to make the team but I was fortunate enough to make the team and be able to play and I am still fortunate enough to continue playing.”

This season, the 6-foot-1 senior leads the team in just about every statisti-cal category. He leads them in shooting percentage (55.3 percent), rebounds (46), steals (13) and assists (2.5) and is second on the team with 52 points through five games – Jake Wagner has scored 54.

The Red Raiders entered the season with high aspirations, but injuries to key players such as 6-foot-7 Amanze Egekeze

and guard Tommy Regan have made it dif-ficult.

Egekeze has been sidelined since the beginning of the season after undergoing knee surgery. His return date is set for Jan. 8 – a game against Crystal Lake South – but he needs to be cleared the day before. Egekeze will start practice a week earlier. And Regan, who suffered a broken finger in his non-shooting hand in a practice last week, has missed the past two games.

On Nov. 24, Only scored a game-high 20 points in a win over Hoffman Estates, including a third-quarter buzzer-beater to tie the game. And he played a large role on the defensive end in shutting down the Hawks’ top shooters – holding them to two points in the fourth quarter.

On Dec. 7, Only turned in one of his most complete games of the season in a 46-39 win over Jacobs. He scored eight points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added four steals.

“He’s a really good player. He’s really tough,” Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle said. “When they add Amanze (Egekeze), they’re going to be special. Right now, Only carries them.”

Huntley’s injured big-man agrees.“The progress he has made offensively

each year is just great,” Egekeze said. “He’s taking it to another level this year by attacking the boards and playing with this aggressiveness that I haven’t seen from him before.”

HUNTLEY — District 158 is asking for the same amount of property tax dollars for the second consecutive year, a decision primarily driven by the late arrival of a state construction grant.

The district’s flat, $61 million property levy request likely will translate into tax relief for most homeowners in the dis-trict’s boundaries because property values in McHenry and Kane counties declined by roughly 10 percent.

But for the ones who didn’t have home values decline, the district’s flat request coupled with declining values mean their tax bills will rise. The district’s tax rate increased by 60 cents per $100 equalized assessed value.

“We are not asking for more money from the community,” said Mark Altmayer, the district’s chief financial officer. “Rather, (the rate) is the result of declining home values, which is driving our tax rate up. I think that is important to know.”

Altmayer presented the district’s levy request to the board during its Thursday committee meeting. Members were sup-portive of the request, and they will vote on the measure Dec. 20.

The administration was able to request a flat property tax amount after officials

finally received a 2005 construction grant from the state. The $39.4 million grant was meant to cover construction costs from the district’s Square Barn Road cam-pus and Marlowe Middle School.

Part of that multimillion dollar grant is being used to pay the district’s construc-tion debt. Because of it, the district is staving off increases to its property tax levy for another year.

The administration also has plans to use some of that $39.4 million to expand Huntley High School, although talks about that from the board have yet to start.

Illinois school districts are primar-ily funded by local property taxes, but District 158 Superintendent John Burkey said the flat revenue amount will not affect the district’s ability to pay its expenses and keep schools running.

“We still feel we have the funds coming in to operate the district at the level we need to operate for our kids,” Burkey said. “We think it’s the right course to do this year.”

In other business, the board voiced support to keep school registration fees flat next year. But Burkey warned that dis-cussion on creating a new technology fee will start in the coming months.

The potential fee would help the dis-trict pay for the district’s emerging digital reading program that incorporates the use of tablets, not textbooks.

D-158 not looking for more dollars

‘Coats for Kids’ fundraiser aims to keep children warm this winterBy Jenny CasaleSuburban Life Correspondent

“Our goal is to keep our kids warm,” said Ryan McPherrin, Community Relations Coordinator for Community Consolidated School District 93.

He is referring to the district’s annual “Coats for Kids” fundraiser, which sup-plies coats, boots, snow pants, hats, gloves, and scarfs for the district’s chil-dren who probably would not have these items if not for the staff’s generosity.

“Coats for Kids” began five years ago when council members from the district schools were discussing which organi-zation should receive the proceeds from their holiday fundraiser. This is when dis-trict nurse Rosita Kandlik suggested the funds be used to purchase coats for the students in the district who needed them. Until that time, Kandlik and other gen-erous staff had been providing coats for some children themselves.

“I just think that for families who don’t have resources to get warm coats, that this is a nice program,” said Kandlik.

During previous years staff has donat-ed thousands of dollars. Then last year it was decided that donations of new and

very gently used, clean winter outerwear would be accepted as well.

“Dozens of coats, scarves, hats and gloves were donated along with $1543.55,” said McPherrin of last year’s collection. “We were able to provide winter clothing for 81 children,” he said.

The district serves approximately 4,000 children in Carol Stream, Bloomingdale and Hanover Park who attend the two middle schools and six elementary schools.

On collection day the staff is invited to wear jeans if they make a minimum $5 donation and/or donate a coat or other winter clothing. But with the amount that was collected last year, obviously many have donated much more.

In past years this fundraiser was only supported by the district’s staff however,

this year Carol Stream’s Mercedes-Benz USA LLC joined the cause.

When Mercedes-Benz manager, Marty Ciszon, suggested that his employees do something special this holiday season, their kind act resulted in additional win-ter clothing donations for the district’s students.

Peggy Swanson, Mercedes-Benz site supervisor, first contacted the Carol Stream Park District to see if they were doing a fundraiser. But with that not being the case, it was suggested that Swanson contact McPherrin.

“We try to do something every year,” said Swanson. “We like to keep it local,” she said.

It took only a couple of weeks for the 27 employees to fill several bags with coats and other winter clothing for at least a dozen children. Donations were made for the youngest students to those attending the middle schools.

The process to determine which stu-dents would benefit from this fundraiser begins early in the school year. The staff and administration keep an eye out for students who do not have adequate outer-wear for blustery winters. Once the social workers are given the students’ names,

parents are asked for the children’s sizesand the information is passed to the dis-trict office.

The clothing is sorted and the mon-etary donations are used to purchaseadditional winter clothing items for thestudents.

“It’s very generous of our staff to taketheir own time to do this,” said McPherrinof those who shop for the additional chil-dren’s clothing.

“The goal of the ‘Coats for Kids’ fund-raiser is to ensure that all District 93 stu-dents stay warm this winter,” said District93 Superintendent, Bill Shields, Ed. D. “Iam always truly impressed by our staffmembers’ tremendous dedication to ourstudents. They consistently go above andbeyond what is required of them and havegone a long way in helping our studentsstay healthy and warm in the cold monthsto come.”

Although the school collection was heldDec. 4, and the staff continues to be verygenerous, the district will gladly welcomeadditional donations anytime over thewinter.

“We will continue to help our kids untilthe last order is filled,” said McPherrin.

How to helpDonations can be made by calling McPherrin at 630-893-9393 and may be dropped off at the district office, 230 Covington Dr., Bloomingdale.
