In 2011 we participated in the first YourSay Survey, which identified some serious issues for the LHD as an organisation to address. This led to us engaging with the Advisory Board to devel- op leaders across the organisation and the initia- tion of a partnership with Studer Group to improve the culture and operation of the organisation. Congratulations to Anita Erlandsen on her scholarship to attend the Preventing Cervical Cancer Conference in Melbourne. Hopefully you’ll be able to get along when Anita visits Broken Hill to share what she gained from the conference. First group of SBATs students get to work! The first ten students starting a School

Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) with the Far West LHD were given an orientation to the environment they will be working and learning in over the next two years.

The students learned about their placements and what they will be doing and expectations on their role and performance.

One particularly important session involved hand hygiene and the precautions to prevent infection spreading to patients and staff. The ‘Glitter Bug’ was put to good effect to demonstrate the importance of hand washing and emphasise how effective the right technique and use of soap can be.

Best wishes to all the students in their respective traineeship and we hope their endeavours can in future benefit our workforce.

Monday 30th March to Friday 24th April 2015

As part of NSW Health’s continuing commitment to improving our organisational culture, the next NSW Health YourSay Workplace Culture Survey will start on 30 March 2015.

In May 2013, everyone who worked for NSW Health was invited to take part in a census survey to provide feedback on their experiences and views on their workplace culture. Far West LHD had one of the highest percentage participation rate in the state, and this year we want to do it again. The results from the survey were used to guide local discussions and action planning, which continue today. The introduction

of Studer, skilled mediators and Service Recognition Awards were all a direct result of what our staff had to say in 2013.

We need your feedback again so we can continue the work to improve the workplace culture in our facilities. A healthy workplace culture means more satisfied and engaged staff and the best possible health care to the people of the Far West community.

Far West Local Health District has a number of Survey Champions who have volunteered to promote the survey and answer all of your questions.

The YourSay posters have been distributed which list the survey champion(s) in your area or department. Alternatively look for the staff member wearing the YourSay T-shirt.

A group of newly graduated Registered Nurses and Midwives have begun their nursing careers with Far West LHD.

Under the Transition to Professional Practice Program, the new grads will experience rural and remote nursing throughout our facilities and rotate through the various wards and departments. The program has proven resilient and very popular, with over 40 applications for the 15 places available. Since the program started, over 75 per cent of participants have remained to live and work in the District following completing the program.

The new nurses and midwives underwent orientation this month and also met staff and executive members prior to beginning work in their respective areas. We wish them all well!

Lion’s Nursing Scholarship allows Dareton Nurse to attend Preventing Cervical Cancer conference

Dareton Women’s Health Nurse, Anita Erlandsen, was recently awarded a Lions Nurses Scholarship Fund Category A scholarship to allow her to attend the PCC2015-Preventing Cervical Cancer Conference in Melbourne.

The Scholarship paid registration and flights to Melbourne to attend the Conference which was held on 21-22 February.

International and National experts spoke on on cervical cancer, cervical screening, Aboriginal women’s health, and the HPV vaccine during the two days. The conference also provided some great networking opportunity.

The conference allowed people working in the field of cervical cancer the opportunity to learn about the upcoming changes to the screening program as well as the success of the HPV vaccine in reducing rates of cervical cancer.

On the Friday night prior to the conference, a reception was held at Government House in Victoria, which celebrated the 40th birthday of the Victorian Cytology Service, as well as the opening of the PCC-2015 conference.

Anita will be coming to Broken Hill in the near future to speak to the women’s health nurses about the upcoming changes and the content of the conference.

Last year a number of organisations in Dareton were approached by Mission Australia to participate in a special project to upgrade the Dareton Community Basketball Court. Each organisation was asked to create an artwork and were provided with a large sheet of metal (900mm wide x 1200mm high) and a selection of paints and brushes.

Dareton Primary Health was keen to participate in the project and immediately worked on ideas for a painting.

It was decided to create an artwork which helped to promote the broad range of services offered at Dareton Primary Health Centre. Jennifer Gadsden, Senior Administration Officer at Dareton Primary Health (pictured right), created a number of mock-up drawings using generic egg people to illustrate the various services. Ideas and feedback was forthcoming from all the staff at Dareton Primary Health throughout the process. The various characters became a talking point around the lunch table in

the staffroom over a number of weeks. Once the final design was approved, the artwork was able to be completed on the metal sheet provided. The project at the basketball court has not been launched as yet, and building works are continuing with Wentworth Shire Council to complete to

project before it can be officially launched. Staff at Dareton Primary Health will be invited to attend the launch (a date has not yet been set) and are keen to unveil their masterpiece!

If you haven’t heard about CAP so far then that’s about to change. CAP stands for Capacity Assessment Project, a state wide consultation designed to both understand how services have changed since greater autonomy was introduced in 2011, while also highlighting innovation across NSW.

CAP will take place as two distinct stages in the first six months of 2015 — an online self-assessment survey followed by service visits for follow up discussions. Both will focus on the governance and operational maturity of Local Health Districts, Specialty Health Networks and the Ambulance Service — or 19 “Health Services” in all.

To help support and strengthen

the work of NSW Health Services going forward, CAP surveys and site visits will focus on the four main criteria of Quality & Safety, People & Culture, Governance & Leadership, and Finance involving a very broad cross section of personnel.

A link to the confidential 40-minute online survey will be sent to around 60 to 80 personnel in each Health Service in February, including Boards, senior executives, clinical leads, facility managers and a random sample of operational staff for completion by Friday, 13 March 2015.

The survey findings will then be collated and analysed to form the basis of an information pack to be sent to Health Services prior to scheduled site visits to each Service

in April and May 2015. These consultations will not only help to explore the survey results in more detail, but provide an opportunity for staff to provide broader information and examples of health innovation.

Coordinated by a CAP Team in the Ministry of Health, CAP will produce 19 individual Health Service reports based on the surveys and site visit information, a statewide CAP report collating all the material and a NSW Health Innovation Directory by the middle of the year.

For more information please see www.health.nsw.gov.au/cap, call the CAP Team on 9391 9874, or email us at [email protected].

HETI to launch Clinical Supervision Training Space

HETI has a new tool to support clinical supervisors. It is called the Clinical Supervision Training Space (or Training Space).

The Training Space is a website that allows clinical supervisors to search for training resources that meet their needs. It hosts a self-assessment tool to allow users to identify their training needs and create a training profile.

The aim of the Training Space is to enable clinical supervisors to more easily access the quality resources that are available in Australia and internationally. It is part of HETI’s contribution to the wider strategy to “ensure that health professionals have appropriate access to clinical supervision support and recognise and support the education role of senior clinicians”.

HETI A/Chief Executive Susan Pearce said the Training Space will make a real difference to clinical supervisors seeking to increase their skills and knowledge.

The Training Space was due to be launched in the last week of February 2015.

What is Aseptic technique? Aseptic technique aims to prevent pathogenic

organisms, in sufficient quantity to cause infection, from being introduced to susceptible sites by hands, surfaces and equipment. It protects patients during invasive clinical procedures by utilizing infection prevention measures that minimize the presence of micro-organisms.

Aseptic technique is a framework for aseptic practice. In aseptic technique, asepsis is ensured by identifying and then protecting key parts and key sites from contamination.

This is achieved by correct: Hand hygiene, Non touch technique, Using new sterilised equipment and or Cleaning existing key parts to a standard that

renders them aseptic prior to use. Whilst the principles of aseptic technique remain

the same, the level of practice will change according to the risk identified using a standard aseptic technique risk assessment. The standard risk assessment involves assessment of technical difficulty and staff competence in maintaining asepsis.

The FWLHD has developed a self-directed learning package that provides all clinical staff knowledge in aseptic technique in accordance with the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare (2010). The staff are also required to complete the online learning package provided on HETI, followed by the Aseptic Technique clinical competency.

Local Autism Network seeking Board members The Rural and Remote Autism Network (RRAN) is holding a meeting on 7 March 2015 to elect a

new Board. The Board has members currently spread from Broken Hill to Sydney and several have expressed they wish to stand down for a variety of reasons.

A new Board will be elected in Broken Hill and run the organisation mainly from here, although support will still be given to families across central and far west NSW. Anyone interested are welcome to attend the meeting and find out what is involved and hopefully a new Board will be elected on the night.

Board member and FWLHD employee Stacey Evers said the organisation wants to recruit passionate, hard working individuals who will be keen to move RRAN forward and they don’t have to have any ‘autism experience’.

The meeting will be held on Saturday, 7 March 2015 at 2pm at the State Emergency Service Board Room (1 Talc Street). Afternoon tea provided. For more information contact Stacey on [email protected]

Healthy Weight Week Our local

dietitians marked Healthy Weight Week this month by encouraging the public to cook more fresh meals at home and be aware of portion control in making healthy food choices.

Meals cooked at home usually contain not only more vegetables but less fat, salt and kilojoules; making them a much healthier alternative to takeaway.

A public information stall (pictured) featured interactive displays of food to test ideas of portion control and the correct serving of foods. The public were asked to test their perceptions of how to best measure a correct serving of foods from different food groups.

The FWLHD Dietetics Dept also promoted their Facebook page which is used to provide sound, evidence based nutrition information to the wider Far West community. You can find them at ‘Dietetics Fwlhd’.

MHDA welcomes Hannah Downing Hannah Downing has joined the Mental Health and Drug

and Alcohol (MHDA) District Team, taking up the role of Sexual Assault Worker for the LHD.

Hannah has been reluctantly released (read prised away) from the Broken Hill Community MHDA Team where she had been employed as a Social Worker since graduating. She has also worked in youth and disability services locally and in a community development role with rural QLD council since grad-uating.

In her new position, Hannah will be coordinating training and supporting staff in the Lower Western Sector to provide a first line response to people who have been sexually assaulted.

The main aim of the training is so that staff feel comfortable to support people in their own communities after an extremely traumatic event.

Look forward to seeing Hannah throughout the District as she implements this important new project.

INNOVATION By Mel Welsh, Clinical Redesign & Innovation Manager

It’s time again for an update on what is happening at the moment from a Redesign programme point of view.

Redesign School: The ACI delivers what is called Redesign School. This a Diploma in Healthcare Redesign offered at no cost to NSW Health staff, however it requires a competitive and stringent application process. As has been described in past Far West In Focus articles, Redesign methodology is a systematic step by step process used to address issues with no clear solution, or issues where things have been tried before, but with little change or improvement. The FWLHD Clinical Governance Unit is currently supporting Zoe Tonkin (Patient Flow Manager/Discharge Planner at Broken Hill Health Service) to attend the diploma program, and Zoe’s project is called “Improving the Patient Journey with Better Flow”. If you think you have a project that is suitable for the Redesign methodology and for submission to Redesign school, please talk this through with your line manager and then get in contact with me to discuss further.

Current Redesign Projects on the go: In addition to Zoe’s Redesign School project starting up soon, there are two other Redesign Projects on the go, both in Broken Hill.

The PleDG (Please Don’t Go) project is addressing did not waits and leave at own risk issues at the Broken Hill Hospital ED, with a focus on Aboriginal people who do not wait. This project is up to the implementation stage which means putting into place some of the solutions that have been generated through the project, and also means continuing to fine tune and try out different things to see what will work best. The ED staff are generating some great ideas and are really keen to start seeing the changes put in place, and consultation is continuing with the Aboriginal Community Working Party around implementation of solutions. As this is a complex issue, the project continues to prioritise engagement with key stakeholders.

The AMenD project (Accessing Community Mental Health Drug and Alcohol services in Broken Hill) is finishing the diagnostics phase and moving into solution design. This project serves as a great reminder that just because there is a service improvement project on the go, it doesn’t mean that the service is underperforming. Consumer and carer feedback has been constructive and has highlighted that the Community Mental Health Drug and Alcohol service in Broken Hill is seen as being responsive in times of crisis and providing an excellent service for long term consumers. Nothing is perfect though and there is always room to improve, so the project is focusing on optimising team processes to ensure consistency, physical health checks for high risk groups, organisation and allocation of resources to areas of greatest need and timely transfer of care, amongst other things. Staff, consumers and carers are engaged in this project and all are keen to see improvements to the way the service is delivered. Below are pictures of some of the staff working through root cause analysis of the prioritised issues.

Hospital Visitor Mrs Pam Lord was invited to cut the cake by CE Stuart Riley and BHHS GM Jane Corcoran.

Volunteers applauded by staff BH and District Health Service staff joined forces to give our many

volunteers a special morning tea to thank them for their time and effort to the health service.

The morning tea held 24 February in the Broken Hill Hospital foyer was a small gesture of appreciation to show our volunteers that their valuable contribution does not go unnoticed or unheralded.

Staff donated delicious treats for the occasion and helped set up and serve the volunteers who attended. Special thanks to the BHHS kitchen staff who warmed up some of the food provided.

We hope all those who attended had a lovely time. Thank you to all staff who help set up and conduct the event.

Eighteen District staff members recently successfully completed the Financial Management Program course delivered by HETI.

Chief Executive Stuart Riley thanked and congratulated each for completing the course. He said there was a level of knowledge and sophistication around financial management and the course would assist by imparting on the students a broad and useful understanding of finances, particularly Activity Based Funding.

He added that HETI found the students engaged enthusiastically in the course, rather than just treating it as a workplace obligation, and he thanked all of them for their commitment.

Those presented their Certificate of Achievement by the Chief Executive were (from left, front): Jo-Anne Warhurst, Tim O’Neill and Rodney Lynott. Back: Dianne Johnson,

Two Wollongong University Students — Anne Lechner and Rebecca Levi — this month presented the results of their community needs assessment for Dietetics Services in Broken Hill.

They completed 117 surveys with community members and conducted 23 interviews with stakeholder organisations. The community surveys showed that 98% of people who had seen a Dietitian previously would recommend them to others – a very positive statistic for our local Dietitians, indicating our services are valued highly by the community.

Weight Loss was the topic that most survey participants wanted dietetic services for, across all ages and genders. The most popular type of community dietetic education was label reading with 45% of respondents wanting this type of service.

The stakeholder interview information was consolidated into four main themes under the overarching banner of Engagement. The community’s lack of engagement in health services as well as their own health was a topic touched on by most if not all interviewees. The four themes sitting under this were Establishing trust, Health as a priority, Barriers (actual and perceived) and Environment.

The recommendations from this needs assessment were that addressing engagement in health is vital before community health programs and projects can be effective. We need to ensure our organisation and its staff are trusted by the community to provide them with healthcare and education, provide education to the broader community around the link between diet/lifestyle and disease to assist them with prioritising their health behaviours, aim to address barriers preventing community members from establishing healthy lifestyle habits and partner with organisations like the local council to improve local infrastructure to be more conducive to health behaviours.

Overall this needs assessment has been a massive body of work , completed in only five weeks and the outcomes will be used to help guide not only future dietetics programs and services but many other community health services provided by the FWLHD. The Department is extremely proud and grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm Anne and Rebecca gave to this project and wish them well with the rest of their final year placements.

Our Community Dietitian Heidi Drenkhahn will in October this year be taking the journey of a lifetime and trekking the Great Wall of China to raise money to support Kidney Health Australia's Big Red Kidney Bus project.

“I have chosen to do this trek because I work every week with rural dialysis patients who never have the opportunity to go on a holiday as to travel away from home means travelling away from their life-sustaining treatment,” said Heidi.

KHA's Big Red Bus project allows rural dialysers to enjoy holidays with friends and families whilst still having access to their vital dialysis treatment. They provide a mobile dialysis unit in popular holiday spots around Australia that Dialysis users can

book in to. The aim of this fundraising is to have more

buses and to fit them out with mobile dialysis units in order to make this unique holiday service available to more dialysis patients around Australia.

“It's a cause I believe in and want to do what I can to support. Please help me to make enjoyable holidays a reality for those who can only dream of such a thing,” said Heidi.

Heidi will also be holding some barbecue and a cake stall during the year to raise funds. The first of these is a barbecue on March 12th in the hospital foyer/courtyard from 11:30am-1:30pm.

Leanne Barber resigned from the Health Service

this month after a 32-year career in nursing.

The only break during her career was a short time

off to welcome her daughter Geanna into the world

and then returned to the career she loved.

Leanne has been an active member of the local

Nurses Association Union Branch and held the

position of President during the last six years.

Leanne will be missed around the hospital with her

loud voice and her infectious personality. Leanne’s

colleagues farewelled her with a morning tea in

Theatre, and then a more casual night out at the

Broken Hill Sturt Club where Leanne was joined by

colleagues and friends.

We wish Leanne well in her future endeavours.

Many of Leanne’s colleagues and friends attended a farewell for her
