The Golden Age (100-180AD)
• Life in the Golden Age
– Rome was largest city in the ancient world
– Extravagant entertainment
– Prosperity through trade and population expansion
• After the Golden Age– Series of bad emperors
• Unsuited for governance

Beginnings of Decline
• Trade -Outside tribes and pirates disrupt trade
• Economy - Raised taxes to pay for defense
• Inflation- A drastic drop in the value of money with rising cost of prices, a result of printing money with less silver in it
• Agriculture- Less crops as a result of overused land, higher prices, damaged land

and were overrunning Roman Legions
– Armies became loyal to commanders and not
Rome
– Mercenaries were paid soldiers to defend Rome,
but felt little loyalty to the Empire
