Learning About Medical Mobile Apps

The January 28, 2014 Faculty Educator Development Seminar was presented by Joshua Steinberg, MD,

Assistant Professor, Dept. of Family Medicine at the Binghamton Clinical Campus. Dr. Steinberg gave the

seminar attendees helpful information about medical apps for mobile devices. The Faculty Educator

Development Seminars are conducted on the fourth Tuesday of each month. All Upstate faculty members are

invited and encouraged to attend. The topics presented at each seminar are informative and useful. Lunch is

always provided. The Faculty Educator Development Committee also sponsors monthly Medical Education

Journal Club Meetings hosted by Thomas Poole, PhD, Associate Professor, Dept. of Cell & Developmental

Biology. The FED committee invites journal club and seminar attendees to join them each June for an

Honors and

Awards

Honors & Awards ~ Congratulations to:

Ann S. Botash, MD, Pediatrics, was honored (along with Martha Ryan) for her

work with abused children and as a founder of the McMahon Ryan Child

Advocacy Center at the “Kick-off for Kids” event, Oct. 24, 2013.

Sharon Brangman, MD, Medicine, has been selected by the Institute of

Medicine (IOM) as one of a core group of seven individuals to participate in three

upcoming meetings of experts on advanced dementia. IOM is convening these

meetings for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the

Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services that was created

by the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA). The first meeting was on Jan.

28, 2014 in Washington, D.C.

Joseph Himmelsbach, PhD, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, received the

Lifetime Achievement Award from the Central NY Psychological Association.

During his 45 year career he developed many of the programs for the mentally

ill that we now take for granted. In his roles as Deputy Director for Clinical

Services and Chief of the Center for Children & Youth at Hutchings Psychiatric

Center, he developed the first mobile mental health crisis service, first

community housing programs, and first centralized admissions program. He also

consulted with, and developed state wide training programs for, the police and

sheriffs' offices to train them in working with the mentally ill. He has been and

still is a faculty member at SU and Upstate where he provides excellent

supervision in psychotherapy to the next generation. In later years, he became

actively involved in disaster mental health and provided direct service right after

9-11 and Hurricane Katrina.

Michael Iannuzzi, MD, Chair, Medicine, has been named one of the world’s top

experts in the field of sarcoidosis research and treatment by Expertscape, an

organization dedicated to helping consumers find health professionals with

extensive expertise in their specific area of concern. Expertscape uses objective

algorithms to identify the most knowledgeable and experienced physicians,

clinicians and researchers across more than 26,000 specific topics, stratified by

geography. Expertscape defines an expert as someone who has published peer-

reviewed research in the science, therapies, and complications for a specific

medical topic.

Rosemary Rochford, PhD, Microbiology & Immunology, has received the

International Citizen of the Year award from the International Center of Syracuse

(ICS). The award was presented at the ICS’ 2013 Central New York International

Citizen Awards Dinner on Nov. 8 at Onondaga Community College. Dr.

Rochford is Vice President for Research. She is a NIH-funded researcher for her

studies on associated lymphomas, malaria and Epstein-Barr virus and is a noted

expert in the field of endemic Burkitt’s lymphoma, and the role the Epstein-Barr

virus plays in the disease, which is the most common childhood cancer in sub-

Saharan Africa. She established the Equatorial Africa Children’s Cancer Fund to

help children being treated at the Nyanza Provincial Hospital, and developed a

model to test hemolytic toxicity of anti-malaria drugs resulting in funding from

Medicines for Malaria Venture and Department of Defense.

In Memoriam

David W. Temple, 70, a former grants administrator at

Upstate from 1976 to 2010, died recently. Dave was an honors graduate of

Clarkson College with a Business degree in Accounting and a member of Alpha

Kappa Psi Fraternity. He was a member of the Boys from Syracuse Air National

Guard Unit.

"Dave was an exemplary grants administrator," said Ken Barker, the former Vice

President for Research, now retired. "One of the things I remember being

impressed with early on was his ability to do any and all things to get a grant out.

Prior to the electronic submission we have today, you needed someone like Dave

to craft and format the document. He would work 24 hours straight if

necessary," said Barker. "He was totally committed to that job and our

institution. He also had a wry sense of humor that I enjoyed immensely."

Survivors include Cathy Temple; his daughters, Christin (Todd) Temple-Creller

and Tracy (Eric) Cheney; granddaughters, Grace and Emma Cheney; a niece,

Kelly Temple and a nephew, Timothy Temple; a sister-in-law, Carol Temple and

many friends and acquaintances including close friend Bruce Schauer. A special

thank you to the Nurses on 6B, University Hospital.

Ronald R. Young, 65, Vice President for Public and

Governmental Affairs at Upstate until 2007, passed away

January 15 at his home in Bluffton, SC.

Ron had a long association with Upstate before assuming his

Vice President role. A leading citizen of the region, he was

for many years a member of the Governor-appointed Council

to the Upstate Medical University. A graduate of

Nottingham High School and his beloved Hampton

University, he spent the bulk of his professional career as an

executive at Agway, Inc. in the Central New York area.

Ron placed a high value on community service, which he exhibited through his

leadership roles on boards for the United Way of Central New York, Central New

York Community Foundation, and Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.

Ron was known nationally for his longtime membership and commitment to his

fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc., where he served in many leadership roles, rising

to International Grand Polemarch (President). In 2011, he was the centennial

recipient of the Fraternity's highest honor, The Laurel Wreath.

“I always admired Ron’s energy and presence with people. He had a wonderful

way of conducting himself," said Upstate Interim President Greg Eastwood. "I

was so pleased when he joined my management team and I had the opportunity to

work closely with him. He was intimately connected to the Central New

York community and it was rare to go into a room with him when he didn’t know

most people there. Lynn and I feel a personal loss and send our heartfelt

condolences to Jacquie and Ron's mother and daughters. This is sad news for

everyone associated with Upstate.”

Survivors include wife, Jacqueline M. Jackson-Young and three daughters,

Jenelle R. Pope of California (Che'), Nicole C. Collier of Maryland (Brent), and

Whitney M. Young of Georgia. He is also survived by his mother,

Alberta "Peaches" Young of Syracuse and brother, John A. Young (Tonette) of

Notes & Corrections:

Please Note:

1. In an effort to keep the Faculty Commons manageable, we will be

concentrating on external presentations and service.

2. Please remember – we do not include any publications, books, book

chapters, etc. that are currently “ in press”. Please wait until you have

publication information before you include these submissions
