Finn A. Haldorsen. Group Chairman

The Rubb Group has had another good year with several new groundbreaking deliveries. Rubb

Buildings Ltd has delivered what is believed to be the largest sports structure of its type in Europe.

The sports building was purchased by Magherafelt Council, just outside Belfast, UK. It is an

impressive structure measuring 230’ (70m) wide x 475’ (145m) long with 29.5’ (9m) side walls. Rubb

has also designed and delivered the spectator stands along one side of the building as well as the

nets that allow this facility to be used by many sports groups at the same time. Also, in Ireland, Rubb

Buildings has delivered a very unusual tri-link BVE building 331.4’ (101m) x 312’ (95m) that has many

interesting features (see story on page 15). At Rubb Inc., we have also delivered several impressive

Rubb buildings to the port sector. We supplied a very high wall 37.4’ (11.4m) side wall structure to

New York Container Terminal and a 160’ (48.8m) span x 500’ (152.5m) port building to Federal

Marine Terminal at Port of Hamilton, Ontario. Due to the unique fire characteristics of Rubb buildings

we were also able to provide American Wood Fibres of Wisconsin with a cost saving Rubb Building

(see page 12 for full story). In Norway, we continue to deliver more buildings to local industry ranging

from small local manufacturers to large multinational companies like Wartsila (one of the world's

largest producers of marine engines). I would also like to congratulate Solveig Agasøster on receiving

the Kings Silver Medal for 30 years service to Rubb Norway. I am also very proud of the fact that

Rubb Inc. received the Maine Governor's award for Business Excellence earlier this year.

A sporting triumph for RUBB SportsBuildings...

Rubb Buildings’ considered approach to design and use of materials confirms that they are at the forefront ofsports hall construction and development.

The new state of the art Meadowbank Sports Arena, at230’ (70m) x 476’ (145m) and with sidewalls of 29.5’ (9m)is currently the largest of its kind in Europe. Designed tobring sports facilities into the 21st Century, this topregional venue situated in Magherafelt in the heart ofMid-Ulster can now provide the widest range of indoorand outdoor facilities for sports.

The arena's indoor synthetic surface measures 450’(137m) x 230’ (70m) on which a whole host of sportingactivities can take place simultaneously. The space canbe quickly divided by use of rebound boards which areremovable at court positions. For example it canaccommodate a full size hockey pitch, plus 4 mini-pitches (all 4 badminton court sized). Rubb’ssophisticated electrical netting system allows the courtto be expanded so that the full hall can be used.Alternatively it can also accommodate an indoor 985’(300m) track (flat). s

4 This 220’ (67m) span x 295’ (90m) long training facility for the Newcastle United FootballClub houses a full sized football (soccer) pitch, allowing training regardless of the

weather as well as a first class training facility for the up and coming stars of the future.

All of which are complemented withseating for 450 spectators on a firstfloor gallery located along one sidewalland one gable end, with six emergencystairways leading to the ground floor.

The exterior has been built with acombination of brick, goosewing grey, steel clad walls (Kingspan material) andhigh strength architectural fabric. Tomaintain the external appearance ofthe building, a system of rainwatergutters were included along the 476’(145m) sidewalls. All services are fullyintegrated with lighting, ventilation andthe dehumidification system providingthe perfect sports environment.

The arena features a traditional threelevel brick and block built amenitiesfacility, comprised of changing rooms, bar, reception, ample storage and aviewing gallery located on the top floor. The facility was completed by the maincontractor FP McCann. The centre isalso fully accessible to wheelchairusers and special needs groups.

Outdoors, the new arena offers a 1312’(400m), 6 lane synthetic athletics track, facilities for associated field events,

5

sand based soccer and gaelic/rugbypitches; outdoor Astroturf/2 tenniscourts, children's play area and pavilion, along with additional car parking. Alloutdoor facilities are floodlit and offer asecure setting with excellent provisionfor spectators and visitors.

In addition to providing this impressivearray of sporting activities, the arenaprovides Magherafelt City Council witha multi-functional building which hasthe flexibility to host exhibitions, regional sports competitions, nationaltournaments and other events.

Blue Flames Sporting Club, Newcastle, UK. National and local sportingassociations benefit from this 154’ (47m) x 216.5’ (66m) x 27.9’ (8.5m)

leisure and conference facility.

Soccarena, Durham, UK. was at the time of build, one of the largest facilities of its type in Europe, this 164’ (50m) span x 453’(138m) long BVL Type building includes a central area which includes locker rooms and showers, reception area, social area withbar as well as storage facilities. For added security the external walls are metal cladding.

s

This 230’ (70m) span x 344.5’ (105m) long training facility for West Bromwich FootballClub houses a full sized football (soccer) pitch, allowing all-weather training.

The project included planning, site clearance, construction and pre-landscaping.

Rubb Buildings first sports hall project, which included services within the mainbuilding, was the Soccarena at theDurham City Football Club in the NorthEast of England. At 164’ (50m) wide x453’ (138m) in length, it is one of thelargest indoor football facilities inEurope. Comprising, eight 6-a-sidepitches and an amenity block whichincludes men’s and women’s changingrooms with disabled access, a cafe, kitchen, conference rooms bars, first aidroom and offices.

This type of sports hall construction is

becoming more prevalent. While workcontinued on the Meadowbank SportsArena, Rubb completed a new leisureand conference facility for the BlueFlames Sporting Club at Longbenton,Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Awardedfrom tender, the client had been veryimpressed with Rubb's highly successfulsporting complex for West BromwichAlbion Football Club, which included anIndoor Training Facility and aCommunity Sports Hall. Construction ofthe Blue Flames Sports and Leisurebuilding was built on land adjacent to

the Newcastle United Indoor FootballCentre another one of Rubb’s premiersports structures.

At 154’ (47m) wide x 216.5’ (66m) inlength with sidewalls of 28’ (8.5m), thefacility is comprised of one largesporting arena, which can be quicklydivided by netting into four separatecourts, allowing the space to used for arange of different activities. The BlueFlames Sporting Club is home to TheTyne and Wear Netball Association. Inaddition to running a regional netballleague the center is used by a range oftennis and cricket clubs, with the indoorcricket nets providing a much neededmodern sports resource for the area. The club is also used on a regular basisfor indoor soccer coaching for children. The club is available to hire by thegeneral public for sports use and for avariety of functions, with the uniquereverse curve roof design creating thespace to accommodate a receptionarea, fully licensed bar, changing rooms, toilets and treatment facilities all withinthe overall structure.

These recent projects have certainly seta new benchmark in the construction ofsports halls, taking the provision ofleisure facilities to a new level.

Rubb Buildings, providing innovativeconstruction solutions to a tight deadlineRubb Buildings has recently completedthe construction of a new maintenancedepot on behalf of Ascot Environmental. The facility was required by anaggregate processing company for therepair and servicing of lorries, vans andplant equipment.

Ascot Environmental is anenvironmental engineering companyspecialising in construction-led solutionsto environmental issues and problems.Operating in the UK on a national basis, they originally were sector specialists onenvironmental projects relating to landfilland recycling but now operate on abroad range of projects, including civilengineering, water-retaining structures, contaminated land regeneration andwaste and recycling facilities.

Located at Thames Wharf, London, in

sight of the O2 dome, the Rubb BVI typebuilding measures 60’ (18.2m) in lengthwith a span of 80’ (24.5m) and a legheight of 27’ (8.2m). Vehicle access tothe facility is via the four 14.7’ (4.5m) x14.7’ (4.5m) roller shutter doors. TheRubb design team had to be extremelycareful in the planning of the facility withthe proximity to the Dockland LightRailway being a major consideration inthe positioning of the building. Rubb hadto ensure that they adhered to the strictbuilding exclusion zone adjacent to therailway.

Dave Kendall, Contracts Manager atAscot Environmental said, “Theconstruction time was important as itwas a tight program for the whole site. The Rubb staff was helpful and co-operative throughout the project.

The deadline was met with Rubb beingon site for only two weeks”.

The flexibility of design, speed ofconstruction and quality of materialscreated the time for Rubb to meet thetight production lead-time andcomplete the project on schedule.

SANFORD MAINERS BASEBALL TEAMWhen the Sanford Mainers, a NewEngland Collegiate Baseball Leagueteam, needed additional space foroutdoor covered cooking, seating andconcessions, they turned to Rubb for asolution. Reviewing the Mainer'srequirements they noticed that the Towncould benefit from increased storageareas for park maintenance equipmentand supplies. Working with other localstakeholder volunteers and companies,Rubb was able to provide a customenclosure that provided space for boththe Sanford Mainers baseball team andthe Town's Parks and RecreationDepartment. The resulting BVR structureat (W)11’ (3.4m) x (L)104’ (31.7m)provided 300sq.ft of cooking and seatingareas and 900ft of enclosed storagespace with three side access doors.

World’s largest independent multi-usercontainer terminal operators look to RUBB Maher Terminals, one of the world’s largest independent multi-user containerterminal operators, recently purchased and installed two Rubb BVR structures fortheir Port Elizabeth, New Jersey facility. The two new buildings, each measuring(W)50’ (15.24m) x (L)83.3’ (25.4m) x (SW)19.7’ (6m) have been constructed

Amtrak - Wilmington Maintenance FacilityAmtrak, one of the United States major rail passenger service providers requireda temporary structure for the maintenance and repair of rail engines. Theworkshop located in Wilmington, Delaware in the U.S., was already home to oneof Amtrak’s three heavy maintenance facilities. Working in conjunction withNason Construction and Amtrak’s designers, a BVE type building at (W)130’(39.63m) x (L)180’ (54.88m) x (SW)21’ (6.4m) was constructed that can serviceup to 12 rail engines at one time. The structure is erected over four existingrailroad tracks for easy entrance and exit.

RHA - Stronger thanyour standard THABased in the city of Bergen, BergenInterkommunale RenovasjonsselskapPrivat AS (BiR Privat AS) is the largestrefuse collector on the west coast ofNorway. They required a Rubb shelterto store plastic refuse bins. The 32’(10m) span x 69’ (21m) long RHAshelter has a door in each endmeasuring 15’ (4.5m) wide x 13’ (4.1m)high. This allows access to both endsof the shelter for maximum logisticalflexibility. The RHA is a derivative of theTHA shelter. Due to the high snowloads and wind speeds in Norway ithas a stronger framework than thestandard THA shelter.

Erected in 1975 and still performing! This is a Rubb Hall SH15 type building that was originally manufactured back in1975. It is 49.2’ (15m) wide x 144’ (44m) long with a door in its gable end that is10’ (3.1m) high x 12’ (3.8m) wide.

It is used by a Bergen shipbuilding yard, Halsnøy AS, which is on the west coastof Norway and susceptible to some extreme weather conditions. The buildingcontains racking and has been used for general storage for over 30 years.

This Rubb Hall building still has the original fabric on it, which shows the longevityof the material used in a Rubb structure. With modern technology today'smaterials are even better.

Nexans AS, part of the Nexans Group,

offers an extensive range of cables and

cabling systems. The Group addresses

a series of market segments from

energy, transport and telecom networks

to shipbuilding, oil & gas, nuclear power,

automotives, electronics, aeronautics,

material handling and automation.

Rubb supplied Nexans AS with an NV

type building on the Island of Karmøy

near Haugesund, Norway. The structure

at 82’ (25m) wide x 138’ (42m) long and

with side walls of 13’ (4m) has two side

doors each measuring 16.4’ (5m) x 16.4’

This bulk storage structure for

American Wood Fibers at Shofield,

changes during the design process.

The completed project consists of two

BVE buildings 85’ (25.9m) x 83.3’

(25.4m) with 26.2’ (7.9m) sidewalls,

erected together end to end. The

original design had two buildings with

an enormous concrete wall to separate

them. Because of the combination of

the fire rating of our PVC fabric and the

wood product being processed inside

the buildings, we were able to connect

the inside structures together and

provide a considerable financial saving

to the customer. This building was

provided with multiple framed

openings and increased collateral

loads to support the required operating

equipment.

Considerable financial saving to client

The town of Derry, NH was looking for asalt shed that would support a storagecapacity of 4,000 plus tons of bulk salt. They requested plenty of clearance to lifta 40’ dump trailer inside the structure.Rubb, designed, manufactured andinstalled a 70’ (21.3m) x 116’ (35.4m)BVE type building. The town chose tohave a building designed without a frontgable end. Of the different foundationoptions that Rubb can use for theinstallation of its structures, the Town ofDerry felt that the traditional pouredconcrete design best fitted their needs.

With severe weather to contend with, stringent building codes had to be metLocated at the Port of Hamilton on theshores of Lake Ontario, Federal MarineTerminals recently purchased anderected a Rubb BVE warehousemeasuring 160’(48.8m) wide by 500’(152.5m) in length with a sidewall 23’(7m) leg height. This large structure wasconstructed to store general and breakbulk cargo including steel products ofmany types.

Rubb, Inc. worked with Federal Marinepersonnel as well as with the Port ofHamilton (who constructed thebuilding’s foundation) to design thisintermodal facility. Since the structure islocated on the Great Lakes and issubject to severe weather, wind andsnow loads were quite high and had tomeet stringent 2005 Canadian BuildingCode (CBC) standards.

From a design and accessorystandpoint, Federal Marine Terminal’snew facility sits atop a poured concretefoundation. There are eight personneldoors, six 18’ (5.5m) x 20’ (6m) Cooksonroller shutter cargo doors with electricoperators, and one large 45’ (13.5m) x24’ (7.3m) custom PVC Bi-parting doorsystem on rails. Having the capability to increase storagecapacity is critical for many businesses. The lack of space can restrict the abilityto trade and therefore impede growthand profitability. For Tradewood Agenciesbigger in this case was certainly better. The warehouse facility for TradewoodAgencies, in Belfast, Northern Ireland istruly a massive structure. The Triple LinkBVE with a 332’ (101m) span x 312’ (95m)in length provides a floor area of 9,595square metres. This was in fact thelargest possible building that could beconstructed on the land available whichwould allow for traffic movement. However this still created plenty of spaceto store a range of timber, and timberproducts, including, doors, flooring andplywood for distribution throughout Ireland and the UK.The front gables have been created withextended canopies over the doors toprovide some protection from theelements. This is further enhanced withthe gable of the middle building being setback to provide a covered area for theloading and unloading of goods. The interior of the sidewalls was clad withMagnesium Silicate Board which providea one hour fire wall. The material is lightin weight and provides excellentinsulation.Other features included roof fans andSyphonic Drainage system. On completion of the main structure theclient added a 4,000sqft (370m2)mezzanine floor to the structure toprovide office space.

2 new horses for MikkelineThis year Mikkeline has had two new horsesat her disposal. She has big expectations forthem, even though one of them has sufferedfrom an injury. Her old companion andfavourite horse, "German Classic", is nowrecuperating in the green fields of Denmark.

The season started in February, as Mikkelinebrought her 4 horses through Europe, downto the south of Spain. For 5 weeks sheparticipated at the Sunshine Tour, aninternational competition with riders fromacross the world. She had several goodplacements, but more important was theopportunity to make the horses ready for along outdoor-season.

The weather was lovely, and the facilitieseven better. After finishing some exams atB.I. Bergen, Mikkeline is now fit and readyfor another successful season. Rubb is asusual proud to promote this promising youngsportswoman.

Rubb Inc. Sponsors Race CarDan Stone, Production Welder and FieldTechnician, and Marcel Chauvette, Shipping /Receiving Manager, have teamed up and willbe racing a stock car at Maine’s BeechRidge Motor Speedway this season. Danand Marcel have worked on the Rubbsponsored car all winter and will participatein the Sports Series event held eachSaturday night.

Good luck Dan and Marcel!

Expedition Snow Ant-Whistler, Canada 5th-20thFebruary 2008While on an operational tour of duty the 5001 Squadrontroops discussed with their line managers the need foradventure training opportunities. It was felt that asquadron organized expedition (exped) would lift thespirits, and so the planning for Ex SNOW ANT wascommenced by the Operations Officer for 5001squadron Flight Lieutenant Katie Muldoon (Katie) andFlight Sergeant Laurie Dengate (Laurie). Followingresearch, Canada was the chosen destination. RubbBuildings Ltd agreed to sponsor the squadron toenable them to fund the trip. The first official meeting was held in September 2007and was an opportunity to meet the individuals whowould make up this exped. The group continued tomeet on a monthly basis and before we knew it, it wastime to collect all of the kit from the adventure trainingstore.February the 5th arrived and the long journey started. We met at 2MT Squadron, and dressed in our Rubb Ltdcorporate clothing. 23 hours, 3 airports and 2 coachrides later we arrived at the ‘Southside Lodge Hostel’ inCreekside village, Whistler, Canada. Day 2, Katie outlined the way things would work;rotation of cooking, cleaning and the generalorganization of the living conditions. The afternoonprovided the opportunity to adjust to the time differenceand orientate the group to the area. The beginnerindividuals who had never stood in a pair of skis did thisat the bottom of the slopes with their instructor.Unfortunately we had our first casualty here in SAC’Tommo’ Thomson who fell awkwardly dislocating hisleft shoulder.Skiing began on day 3, with one beginner and twointermediate groups, each with their own instructor. Thegroups headed up the Creekside Gondola and spentthe day on-piste finding their ‘ski legs’. The touring element to the expedition was the mainpart; introducing people to the sport and encouragingthem to push themselves out their comfort zones.Whistler provided an excellent range of terrain andweather. Instruction in winter survival skills, includingsnow-holing and transceiver training had us fullyequipped for any eventuality. Our touring skills andresilience were put to the test in the inhospitableweather! In 12 days of skiing, individuals who could not ski, nowhad Basic Ski Proficiency qualifications, Intermediateskiers were tested for the Advanced Ski Proficiency andSki Touring proficiency. Everyone has received wintersurvival skills. Everyone had toured and skiedhundreds of kilometers across the Whistler Blackcombarea. A fantastically packed 12 days in an outstandinglocation!
