With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

GOODWILL BOARD OF DIRECTORS ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT & CEO Peoria, IL – April 26, 2016 - Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois’ Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Don E. Johnson as the non-profit’s new President & CEO, replacing Patty Fuchs who will retire in May 2016 after 23 years with the organization.

Johnson has worked in the non-profit sector for more than 26 years. For the past 11 years he has served as the Vice President Community Investments at Heart of Illinois United Way. In this position he created new policies and procedures to move community-funded projects to an outcome-based system. He helped build a robust volunteer system of more than 130 people annually, developed

from the business community. Johnson implemented three new community initiatives: 211, Success by Six and S3 (Supporting Student Access). Prior to the United Way, Johnson was Executive Director of the Hult Center for Healthy Living. In this position he nearly tripled the operating budget and helped to complete the original capital campaign. During his time at Hult Center he served on two national boards in Baltimore and Milwaukee. During his tenure, the Hult Center was ranked number one in publicized research out of 38 similar facilities in the United States. Joe Sharpe, Goodwill of Central Illinois Board Chairman, commented, “After a comprehensive search process, the board has found the best person to build upon the accomplishments of current Goodwill President & CEO, Patty Fuchs. Don is an excellent leader in our community with a strong passion for helping others. This, combined with his business acumen and the ability to effectively communicate and execute strategic plans, makes Don uniquely qualified to lead Goodwill of Central Illinois successfully into the future. “

A Little History Refresher

In 1850, Galesburg was a small town of 882 on the rolling prairie of the Central Military Tract. The Tract was one of three created to “meet the warrants” given in the War of 1812. The land was set aside in western territories that became part of the present states of Arkansas, Michigan and Illinois. Knox County would be one of the 14 counties created in the Illinois tract. Land stretched east to the Illinois River, west to the Mississippi, north to Knox County and south to Calhoun County.

Today, Galesburg is a bustling city of 32,195 (according to a 2014 estimate). How we arrived to our present day is largely due to the efforts of a few industrious and passionate leaders. These men, George W. Gale, Selden Gale, Chauncey Colton, Silas Willard, William McMurtry and others formed the Central Military Tract Railroad Company in order to compete with rival communities for the right-of-way of train tracks joining Quincy and Chicago. Many other community leaders such as Clark M. Carr and George Churchill scraped together cash and community spirit to entice railroad workers to lay track to Galesburg.

Perhaps the greatest hero in the quest to bring the railroad to Galesburg was Chauncey Colton. Mr. Colton met two important men while he was in Boston buying goods for his Galesburg store. One of the men was J. W. Grimes a young lawyer from Burlington, Iowa. The other, E. S. Wadsworth, a merchant from

Aurora Illinois. These men met by chance at the American House in Boston. Through conversation they discovered each man had passionate interest in the railroad in Illinois. They agreed to a plan to connect the Aurora Railroad the Military Tract at Mendota.

Colton returned home with his exciting news and convinced the Northern Cross Railroad investors in Quincy to connect to Chicago via the Military Tract & the Aurora Railroad. After negotiation, track was laid and history took care of the rest. I could go on to describe how their efforts would create the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad that would eventually become part of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. However, interesting that would be, it would be a distraction from the true purpose of this article.

Present day Galesburg still reaps the rewards of the work of those industrious and determined men of the 19th century. Galesburg has enjoyed “Rock Star” status as an important hub for railroad workers, commerce and transportation over the past 160+ years. Many immigrants from all over the world would find their way to Galesburg to work for the railroad.

A Coalition As an Amtrak Community, Galesburg is the gateway west. The

California Zephyr reaches all the way to San Francisco. The Southwest Chief travels all the way to Los Angeles. Each year about 49,000 people step on Amtrak in Galesburg and travel westward.

About 45,000 people step on Amtrak to travel on the Chicago to Quincy stretch of our Illinois Amtrak network. Several of the communities along this route have come together to advocate for expanded rail service in Illinois. This organization of community leaders is called the Western Illinois Amtrak Coalition. This partnership brings together leaders from Princeton, Kewanee, Galesburg, Macomb, Quincy and the Quad Cities. The Quad Cities are anxiously waiting for service to be offered to Rockford.

One of the initiatives we are planning for our Amtrak “corridor” is marketing within our communities. We want local travelers to be aware of the convenience of visiting one of our Amtrak cities for recreation. It’s a worry free way to plan a change-of-pace adventure.
