ACUPUNCTURE AWARENESS WEEK February 25th to March 3rd 2013Acupuncture Awareness Week is supported by the British Acupuncture Council and aims to help better inform people about the ancient practice of traditional acupuncture. With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each year, acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today.

This year the focus topic is sleep problems and insomnia.Sleep is vital. Without enough sleep we feel lethargic and unable to cope. That’s why sleep deprivation is often used in torture. Sleep is the time that the body’s systems repair the damage from a day’s activity, and replenishes our stores of energy to cope with the next day. A good night’s sleep should leave you feeling refreshed and raring to go.

For many of us in this modern world though, there is enor-mous emphasis on the use of the mind – there is a constant barrage of information coming at us all the time, which has to be attended to and assimilated. Now just think for a minute, how much time do you spend doing e-mail, checking Face-book, Tweeting, surfing the Internet, listening to music on your phone, PC, iPad or whatever device you favour – and how much time do you allow your mind to rest? – not doing any of this, or watching telly but just being quiet for a few moments – not much is it? Unless you can find an inner peace and stillness, even just for a few minutes, you will go to bed with your rational mind still buzzing with all this stimulation and no wonder you can’t get to sleep, or if you do your mind wakes you with thoughts that have to be dealt with.Of course is it not just lifestyle issues that cause sleep prob-lems, there are many illnesses or injuries that can cause this, be it coughs and colds, pulmonary disorders, physical pain

and discomfort, skin diseases, restless legs, snoring partners and so on. Then what you eat or drink can have an effect – alcohol or caffeine or rich food taken mid to late evening doesn’t help.

There are other clues as well such as waking at a particular time at night – Chinese Medicine has it that each hour is related to a particular internal organ, which gives a pointer to where we need to look for treatment – hands up all of those who wake between 1 and 3 am? This is Liver time – maybe had a little too much to drink before bed?

There have been numerous clinical trials demonstrating that acupuncture can provide significant benefit to those suffering from sleeping disorders (these can be found on www.acu-puncture.org or on the World Health Organisation website).In general, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neuro-chemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being. Stimulation of certain acupuncture points has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the ‘analytical’ brain, which is responsible for insomnia and anxiety.

So in summary, whilst acupuncture may be used to help you overcome your sleeping problems, you can see that there is opportunity to help yourself as well!

MOUSE SHOULDERS? COMPUTERS DON’T HAVE TO BE A PAIN IN THE NECK!The increased use of computers has spawned widespread

suffering from neck and shoulder pains. One collection of

symptoms is so commonplace that it has its own

diagnosis: Mouse Shoulder.

What Is Mouse Shoulder?Mouse Shoulder is pain over one side of the neck, spread-

ing into the head, shoulder and arm. The pain is described

as ‘burning’ or ‘deep aching’ and is associated with

repeated computer mouse use.

How Do I Get Mouse Shoulder?The shoulder blade attaches to the body by muscles into

the spine, ribcage, neck and skull. Fixing the shoulder in

one position causes painful ‘trigger points’ to form within

these muscles.

Holding the mouse with the arm away from the body

requires sustained tension in the shoulder muscles to `

support the weight of the outstretched arm. Over time,

this leads to pain and weakness.

What Can Be Done To Help?Mouse Shoulder responds well to a combination of

Osteopathy and electrotherapy. Medical acupuncture can

also reduce pain and muscle spasm by treating the painful

trigger points. However, treatment alone is not the answer;

without improvement in work posture or lifestyle, these

painful symptoms can return within weeks. You are then

at risk of becoming dependent upon repeated, costly and

long-term treatment.

How Can I Help Myself?

1) Become ‘ambi-moustrous’. Learn to use the mouse

with either hand. This gives the muscles on your painful

side a complete rest and will speed your recovery.

2) Change your mouse to a Trackball or Marble mouse

and bring it closer to you. Research has shown that

holding the arm less than 10° abducted from the body can

reduce muscle activity by as much as 60%

3) Activities like swimming, racket sports, Pilates, archery

and bell-ringing are great exercises for the upper back

muscles.

4) Use a Resistance Band (Theraband) to exercise neck

and shoulder muscles for two or three minutes every day.

Building up these muscles will improve neck support and

posture.

5) Self-Massage. A tennis ball in a sock makes an effective

and cheap alternative to expensive electrical massagers.

BLOXHAM SCHOOL ANNOUNCES NEW HEADMASTER FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 The Council of Governors of Bloxham School is delighted to announce that it has appointed Paul Sanderson to be the School’s new Headmaster commencing on 1 September 2013. Mr Sanderson will succeed Mark Allbrook who will retire in the Summer after 11 years of outstanding service to the school.

Mr Sanderson (40) is currently a Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for the curriculum in and out of the classrooms at Gordonstoun School in Scotland. He is married to Helen and they have three young children. He was educated at Banbridge Academy in Northern Ireland followed by a BSc (Hons) degree in Biological Science at the University of St Andrews. As a post graduate student he got his PGCE at Keble College, Oxford followed by a MEd in Educational Research at Jesus College, Cambridge.

Speaking with obvious delight at his appointment Paul commented:‘I am both thrilled and delighted to have been appointed the 13th Headmaster of Bloxham School. My wife, Helen and I, are very excited to be coming to a school that has students at the heart of its thinking. I admire that its roots are borne out of a Christian commitment to the community and that it has pupil well-being as its central focus. By affording young people the opportunities to develop, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically and socially, it strives to educate the whole person in preparation for an ever changing and uncertain world. Mark Allbrook will leave me with a fine school, which is highly regarded and I will endeavour to build upon his industry to nurture and strengthen Bloxham’s position as a leading independent school.’Commenting on the announcement of his successor, Mark Allbrook said:‘I am confident that we are announcing the appointment of someone capable of both maintaining Bloxham’s strong traditions and also moving it forward. It has been an honour to have been the Headmaster here for the past eleven years and I hope to be able to hand on the baton with Bloxham in a strong position. I wish Paul and his family every success and happiness here at Bloxham; I am sure that they will receive the warm welcome for

which the school is justifiably renowned.’

Samantha Ward returns to Leamington to provide once again, a spell binding performance

in a programme with a distinctly French flavour. In the year which marks 50 years since his

death, the concert begins with the light hearted dancing rhythms of the sinfonietta by

Poulenc. Included is the opportunity to hear one of Berlioz’ finest works, the Love Scene

from Romeo and Juliet. The Ravel piece is in 6 movements and, though a homage, is a

light and beautifully reflective work.

The climax of this concert is Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2. A wonderfully dramatic

and absorbing piece, played by one of Britain’s leading musicians.

Music Director is Richard Laing who has a reputation as one of the most exciting and

inspiring conductors in Britain today.
