Roxanne Potvin at Expressions

Thursday, May 21, 8 p.m., Expressions, 554 Ward St.

There’s a new album in the works for roxanne potvin, the Montreal-based, bilingual, JUNo nominat-ed singer-song-writer. After a two-year hiatus from the road to learn the ropes of sound engineering, she’s picked up her notebook and gui-tar once again, working away at what is to be her fifth full-length album.

Fans in Nelson will be able to hear some of the new material on an upcoming solo performance at Expressions The new songs are inti-mate first person snapshots of life among friends and lovers (cyborgs in one instance!). The witty garage-folk attitude of her last album play, makes a few appearances and catchy melo-dies are at the forefront.

With a JUNo nomination, seven Maple blues awards nominations, and national television and radio appear-ances including radio 2 Drive and “Q”, roxanne potvin continues to carve her place in the canadian roots music scene.

Bears close trailMay 1 to June 5, Nelson-Salmo Great Northern Trail south of Cottonwood Lake parking area to Hall Siding

In consultation with bc conservation officer service, region-al bear biologists and the Ministry of Forest land and Natural resource operations, the regional District of central kootenay is initiating an annu-al spring trail closure for a portion of the Nelson-salmo Great Northern Trail. The annual closure will include the trail south of cottonwood lake parking area to hall siding. signs will be posted accordingly at the entrance to trail closures.

collared bear data has shown the area from cottonwood lake to hall siding, particularly the areas of Apex and camp busk, are heavily used by grizzly bears in the spring. As black bear and grizzly bear activity is com-mon in the spring and early summer, bears may be present on the trail system throughout the year so please remember to always, use caution, do not attempt to view or approach bears and do not leave garbage or food on trails.

Gardenfest is not to be missed Arena leak prompts upgradesThe Nelson and District recreation

commission has approved upgrades to refrigeration safety systems and replacement of the Nelson and District community complex (NDcc) arena condenser after an ammonia leak on April 21 injured a worker and shut down the arena for several hours.

In 2014 the recreation commission approved $130,000 in upgrades that were to take place during a 2015 sum-mer shutdown. That money will now be redirected to replace the condenser tower, upgrade the safety relief system, and add three ammonia sensors on the outside of the arena. The project cost for the condenser replacement and safety relief system upgrades is estimated at $150,000 and will go to tender this week. The new ammonia sensors have already been ordered at a cost of $12,500.

QuickLinks: Community NewsBears limit recycling

Visitors at the kokanee Marina next to kokanee creek park have been seeing more than just recycling at the collection bin the last few weeks. A bear has been spotted around the recy-cling bin several times. In response to this situation, the regional District of central kootenay (rDck) is working with the Marina owner to try and pre-vent the bins from being an attractant. The recycling depot has historically been open 24/7, but as part of efforts to mitigate human/wildlife interac-tions the collection bins will now be open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00p.m. daily.

The public is requested to assist the rDck by limiting their use of the kokanee depot to only the hours that the bin is open. When bears become dependant on a human provided food source it can become a potentially dangerous situation for the bear as well as people in the area. residents and visitors to the area can help out this bear and other wildlife by doing the following;

-clean all recyclables (the scent is an attractant for bears and wildlife)

-Do not dispose of garbage in recycling bins

-Do not leave garbage or recy-clables outside of the bins. This could potentially make the problem worse.

-remember that bears belong in nature, and we can all help to ensure they stay there if everyone is respon-sible with their waste http://www.bearsmart.com

NDCC renovation updateThe Nelson and District recreation

commission has approved and will recommend to the regional District of central kootenay (rDck) board that the organization hire a construction manager to oversee multiple contracts to complete renovations to the Nelson and District Aquatic centre. staff will know the new project timeline in June once a construction manager has been hired.

The pool is now expected to remain open through June and into July.

In April, the rDck tendered the project using a design–bid–build pro-cess to sign a lump sum contract for the whole project, but rejected all bids for being over budget by at least $1.2 million.

BioSynthesis Seminar

phoTo sUbMITTED

BioSynthesis Seminar participants learn about DNA

by Oliver and Spencer Ridge, age 9This past weekend, about 15 future

biohackers – including us, nine-year-old twins from rossland – gathered to create DNA that can be put into /e.coli/bacteria. The first step was to create our DNA. We created our DNA first on the computer to see what our DNA plasmid would look like.

To make the plasmids, we had to use pipettes, magnets, and buf-fer solution – it was a bit like con-structing lego without being able to see the pieces because you add one

piece at a time into a centrifuge tube. The amounts were so small that you couldn’t see them but you could see the magnetic beads that had the first parts of the DNA attached to them.

It was fun making DNA plasmids and changing the colour of bacteria but this same technology can be used to do other things as well. It can turn corn into gasoline (also known as bio-fuel) and make yeast that can detect gold (this is what we hope to make one day – yeast that turns gold when it detects gold)!”

Nelson Police Reports

On Saturday, May 2 at approx. 2:20 a.m. Nelson police Department mem-bers responded to request to remove an unwanted person at a rosemont home. A male had returned after being told to leave, and kicked in a door to gain access. NpD members took him into cus-tody without incident and he was held for the night in cells. he was released later the same day, charged with damaging their property and conditions to not attend at the residence.

A short time after the release the homeowner called to say he was back in the home and had assaulted him. Members attended and the male fled on foot, even-tually climbing a tree to elude capture. The Nelson Fire Department was asked to assist in finding a safe way to get this male down from his 40 foot perch. bc Ambulance was asked to stand by as well. It was decided to allow the male to climb down on his own when he felt safe. once he did he immediately tried to get back to the residence and was taken into police custody there. The 26 year old male is being held in custody to appear in court in Nelson Monday to answer to charges of breaching release conditions, assault, resisting arrest and escaping lawful custody.

one question I find I ask myself frequently is “When is it time to move on?” There doesn’t

appear to be any specific age or time in your life to progress to the next state of it. by next state I mean a varying amount of things, like your

career or your love life. so how do you know when to move on?

one thing we often come up against that prevents us from moving on is the judgment of others. While they may bring up valid points regard-ing any major change in your life, it should be you who decides, not

them. Also, one tip that I haven’t been following that I really should, is to focus on the positives of mak-ing a change and stop focusing on the negatives.

Moving on is a challenge. Doing it is a necessity and the sooner you do it the better.
