Program Overview:

Executive Presence has always been a mysterious “X-factor” in leadership. People often say, “I know it when I see it,” or describe it in terms of professional appearance, presentation, or poise. While those factors are both relevant and important, our extensive research has revealed that Executive Presence encompasses a broad array of qualities that are directly linked to a leader’s ability to mobilize people and sustain action.

This 2 1/2 day Mastery Program on “Leading with Influence” is designed to provide senior leaders and high potential leaders with a sophisticated approach to developing “EP,” that is, the ability to motivate, inspire, and align the actions of an organization and make an impact on the world around them. This breakthrough program is based on the Bates Executive Presence Index™, a robust model and 360 assessment that measures the distinct dimensions of influential leadership. Participants discover the three dimensions of Executive Presence – Character, Substance and Style – and a practical path to amplifying these qualities and communicating the unique aspects of their leadership persona.

Modules

Pre-Session ExPI™ Assessment and Coach Feedback

Prior to attending our Mastery Program, each participant is matched with a coach and introduced to our Bates ExPI™ Assessment. The Bates ExPI™ is a scientifically-validated tool, based on extensive research and a model for Executive Presence which defines the specific qualities that allow leaders to influence, inspire, align, connect, mobilize and sustain goal-oriented action. It is a 360 style assessment that measures perceptions of a leader’s presence and influence in three dimensions: Character, Substance and Style.

Upon enrollment in the program, we contact participants to get to know them, advise them on the Bates ExPI™ process and schedule two meetings. We collaborate with the organization to determine who, in addition to the participant and supervisor, will participate as raters. Raters are typically colleagues and peers whose judgment is regarded as valuable to a participant’s development, which allows us to compare the perceptions of others with a leader’s own self-perceptions, and discern patterns.

Once the results are tabulated, a report is generated and each participant receives an in-depth Bates ExPI™ Feedback Report and User Guide. The coach introduces the participant to the User Guide, and then in a second meeting, the coach and participant interpret the themes that emerge.

Through this process the participant begins to develop a strong conceptual understanding of what EP is, and how his or her individual qualities of leadership are expressed through the facets of the Bates ExPI™. They are asked to bring their assessments to the session, to guide their learning during the Mastery Program experience. The Bates ExPI™ is also a powerful foundational tool for executive coaching and development programs.

Bates ExPI™ Opening Session: What is Executive Presence, and how can it be measured?

Executive Presence is a “hot topic” in leadership today. It’s often characterized as appearance, presentation skill, or the ability to command a room. The trouble with these definitions is that they rely on anecdotes and guesswork, hardly helpful to the leader seeking to elevate his or her overall impact. What has been needed for many years is a research-based model that provides specificity and guidance to a leader seeking to mobilize purposeful action. The facets of the model connect directly to what research shows drives exemplary leadership, including the ability to create loyal followership, drive exceptional outcomes, and win hearts and minds.

We kick off the evening with a briefing on the Bates EP model and the qualities of leadership proven to “make things happen.” From Authenticity to Restraint, Composure, Inclusiveness, Confidence, Interactivity, Vision, Practical Wisdom, and more, we clarify the meaning of these qualities and set the stage for a fuller appreciation for the phenomenon that is presence.

The Bates EP Model and resulting ExPI™ Assessment were developed through extensive research into communication, management, psychology and social action theory. The objective of the program is to inspire very busy leaders to adopt new strategies for increasing their influence and becoming communicative leaders. Through our practical tools and actionable process, they discover how to connect, motivate, inspire and ignite above and beyond effort from their organizations.

ExPI Leadership Pathways Part I: Embracing and Leveraging EP Strengths

The Leadership Pathway Sessions are journeys of personal discovery. Session one

focuses on strengths in the facets of each participant’s Bates ExPI™ feedback. Through a facilitated process of storytelling, we guide them to explore important lessons and themes. Later, in the Roundtables, they discover how their strengths can be applied to situation-specific leadership challenges.

Our Six-Step Leadership Storytelling Model helps participants quickly get to the “heart” of a personal or professional experience, to explore how it has shaped the way they express facets of EP. We teach a highly-effective, proven method informed by the philosophy that we gain insight about our experiences by going beyond “heroism” stories to open up and appreciate the deeper lessons of the events that shape us. Using our model of “leader as learner” they are able to connect lessons “forward” to situations that require presence and leadership today.

ExPI™ Leadership Pathways Part II: Discovering Areas for Growth and Development

In the second Leadership Pathway module, participants choose facets where they have discovered opportunities to grow and develop. We guide them to choose challenging areas they suspect are difficult, yet critical to their success. They delve into specific “items”ofthefacet(singlequestionsfromtheassessment)wherethereisdissonancebetween rater groups or their own perceptions of themselves. Through a process of inquiry, they recall a situation where this quality or behavior was evident in others.

One of the most potent aspects of the process is the Q & A process – which allows participants to safely and comfortably explore a “moment,” a “conversation,” or even an “emotion” that led to an insight. The Pathway session lays the groundwork for the Roundtables, where they share their stories and discuss how to apply the lessons to current business situations.

Executive Presence Skill Session I: Time and Energy Management

The skill sessions are hands-on experiences where participants learn practical skills. These support learning in themost overt aspects of EP – Style (Appearance, Intentionality,Inclusiveness, Interactivity and Assertiveness) and touch on the deeper dimensions of Substance and Character.

The first skill session cuts to the heart of one of the most persistent challenges all busy executives face: the management of their time and energy. As one leader of a global enterprise told us at the outset of a Bates ExPI™ program, “I’m so far under the ocean, I don’t have a straw long enough to break the surface and breathe.” Until and unless leaders find space to breathe, they are unable to focus on becoming the leaders they want to be.

Our expert guides a discussion on strategies for moving out from under the crushing demands of a busy life and career, putting first-things-first, and aligning activities with our priorities. We discuss calendar management as well as the deeper reasons for changing life habits. Many participants discover that through this work, they finally have a motivation to wrestle their calendars to the ground. Spending time in the right places (Inclusivity);inspiringothers(Vision);connectingwithalloftheimportantpeopleinourlives;deepeningalignment(Resonance),exhibitingsteadinessinacrisis(Composure),orkeepingtheorganizationfocused,alignedandontrack(Intentionality).

The objective of this session is to ignite each leader’s interest in finally carving out the time to create the mental, physical and emotional energy essential to the demands of leadership. Practical tips and strategies will help each participant walk away with short and long term strategies for life-long, sustained personal habits.

Executive Presence Skill Session II: Executive Image and Style

Appearance is one of the most discussed and least-understood aspects of executive presence.It’snotonlythefirstfacetoftheStyledimensionofEP;italsotouchesonthedeeper dimensions, Substance and Character. Often, when assessing a leader for a next position, an organization will comment on appearance in terms of the individual’s ability to convey Practical Wisdom, Confidence, Resonance and Authenticity.

Though every leader feels a relatively high level of confidence when it comes to knowing how to dress for success, most find it challenging to keep up an executive wardrobe, and frankly, to fully take advantage of image as a tool of communication in business. This session with our image expert guides participants to “up their game” with a consistent approach to dressing for your position, and your day.

“Appearance” as defined by our research into EP, is “looking and acting the part of an able executive, and adapting dress and demeanor to each situation.” We use a show-and-tell approach to demonstrating how to build a wardrobe that works, with choices in clothing and accessories, from professional events to casual. The outcome is to help busy leaders spend less time in the closet each morning, avoid costly “mistake” purchases, be “on trend” without becoming a victim of fashion, express an authentic leadership style, and still stand out by fitting in perfectly. It’s a fun, engaging session that puts both men and women on a path to using image as a tool of influence.
