President’s Report – November 2010

Next Meeting: Sunday 28rd November 2010 @ 11am

Picnic Point is accessed via Mathoura or Tocumwal, Mathoura is the shortest way as there are gravel / sand roads.

There has been a tentative booking and the owners are setting aside 10 powered sites at $24 / nite per couple and

$20 / nite per single. It is up to each person to contact Fay or Paula directly on 03 5884 3375.

[ [email protected] ] to confirm a booking ASAP, let them know you are from ISOC Vic.

A great turn out at Dartmoor at the get together with the SA members, there were 10 Scouts and 4 other vehicles, as

usual very social. All but one vehicle/couple camped for the weekend and there was some talk of trying to have one each

year, not necessarily at the same place or the same weekend, Beachport has been mentioned as a possibility. Beachport

was one of the places we stopped at on the way to Port Lincoln and the caravan park was right on the beach.

By now most people will have received an invitation to the 20th Anniversery dinner, Arrangements well in hand for

SUNDAY, 6th February at Tanti Hotel in Mornington for lunch. Meals (for first 45 people registered) will be subsidised by

the Club. Cost will be $15 per person for 2 course meal. Free drinks on arrival. Tea/coffee/sweets provided free of charge.

All other drinks at bar prices. Letters have gone out. If you know of anyone who wishes to go, give them the info and tell

them THEY MUST BOOK IN WITH IVAN GREGORY.

Vehicle for sale- David on 0408 145565 has a 79 Traveltop in original condition that he said has been in a shed

for 20 years with genuine 52000km. Sunraysia wheels, Auto, wilderness green that he wants to sell,

[it is responsibility of prospective buyers to confirm details]. Vehicle is in the Yarra Valley area east of Melbourne.

Birthdays: Tom Williamson (9th Nov)

Ron Gregory (21st Nov)

David Elsom (8th Dec) Happy Birthday to you all

Which had been used as potato farmers paddock knock-about prior to Ron & Eleonora buying it as a "mess!”

Ron & Eleonora Gregory were Landrover people until buying their first Traveltop brand new.

That vehicle won the Traveltop section at Broken Hill. Foundation Members Geelong Four Wheel Drive Club,

and also Foundation Members of the International Harvester Club. Ron is “steam buff” and IH enthusiast.

Weekend meetings have been held at their home and the convoy for Port Lincoln in 2009 formed up overnight

at their Birregurra property. Both the Traveller and the caravan are emblazoned with decals announcing

“IH 4x4 Muscle”. Ron fully believes in that, and has tackled inclines with the caravan hooked on the back

too frightening to contemplate, including Anzac Hill, Alice Springs. Eleonora is a “Craft & Cooking Lady”

who has often given us far too much to eat during “Happy Hours”, or any other excuse she can find.

They also own a camping trailer and towing either that or the caravan have travelled Australia extensively As

advocates of “free camping” they maintain a comprehensive list of “freebies”, that the club has utilized on

occasion. Having a lot of experience Ron can still be tempted into “serious off-roading” and sometimes is!

Mac got ready for the Blue Mountains, BUT, is he still allowed to go?

Left, 1970 IH poster shows a Travelall towing a large Airstream

Caravan (R/V. or Trailer in USA), a Camper trailer, and a Boat!!!

Now that’s a Fair Dinkum Aussie “ROAD TRAIN!”

Therefore it is no great surprise to discover that Airstream has a

experimental lightweight design shown in 2008 at Louisville.KY.

Editorial; “KEEPING a CLUB TOGETHER”

For those who have never met me, here I am preparing

The Newsletter in a caravan in the Northern Territory!

Clubs must consider ALL their members interests on all occasions to

retain them as members in order to continue to exist as a club. Basic!

Although well aware of the difficulty in planning outings or tours at

which members will only attend if their pets are allowed “that’s the

way it is!”, better to accept it and automatically plan it that way!

If pets are out the owners will be also & eventually out of the club!!!

A location for the main group and “somewhere else” for those with pets, produces cliques and no responsible planner

should ever consider such a divisive solution. Solidarity in a club is, “caring for each other’s interests” Ken Sellars

JOHN WAYNE, (the Duke) an “INTERNATIONAL” Movie Star

John Wayne owned a number of ranches in Arizona, including the "Red Eye Ranch" operated by his Red River Land

Company, in Stanfield.

John Wayne's customized 1966 International Travel-All "War Wagon" was on display with the Riverside Casino's

vintage auto collection in 2002. The Duke had the roof raised six inches & a hatch added so that he could hunt

antelope at his Red Eye Ranch standing through the roof. Other alterations included 5 speed transmission,

heavy duty shock absorbers with additional leaves in the springs, heavy duty bumper, winch, & airconditioning.

The vehicle was so well suited for him that he had it shipped to Africa for use on his hunting safaris.

Editor The above comments are from a visitor to the display. Substantiated specifications are scarce. Information is that

there may have been two of these special prepared vehicles the other one going to a Safari Hunting business in Africa.

There are descriptions of built-in gun lockers, the winch is described as PTO, with factory fitted 304 V8

A similar vehicle was once owned by the Geelong City Fire Brigade in Victoria, Australia as a Rescue Unit, one of

two possibly unique to Australia IH vehicles the brigade owned, the other being a twin cab Ute, used for Salvage.

One of the vehicles went to Bellarine State Emergency Service as a Rescue vehicle in the late 1980s. I cannot trace it

further than that, and would be interested to learn of their ultimate fate, as neither vehicle had done many kilometres.
