Overview

Most Fashion Jewelry is created using non-precious, or semi-precious materials.

Metal parts are often gold- or silver plated and crystals, pearls and stones are

often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Jewelry items, and other ornamentations for adornment, is nothing new, it has

been around since the early ages of human existence, in one way or another, and

is going to continue to be present all through the future as well.

From ancient history we know that humans in all corners of the World have

been appreciating and using some kind of jewelry.

Up through the times there has been a mixture of precious, semi-precious and

non-precious parts used in jewelry.

Jewelry is today classified into two different main categories, Fine Jewelry and

Fashion (or costume) Jewelry. Fine jewelry use more precious and semi-

precious materials and is therefore in a higher price range than fashion jewelry.

However, the cost of some fashion jewelry can be higher than the cost of some

fine jewelry pieces.

Page 5: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Many people are thinking of fashion jewelry, made of non-precious materials,

as fake jewelry. Nothing could be further from the truth. Workmanship and

quality can be of a similar quality as fine jewelry. The difference is the

materials used. Actually, fake jewelry does not exist.

Anything fake, in any industry, is due to the fact that items are being passed for

something they are not.

Fine jewelry is often acquired as an investment, besides being worn as

adornments, or as a “back-up” for difficult financial times. The value is most

often more stable than money and therefore seen, rightfully or wrongfully, as

safer than any other currency. Fashion jewelry, on the other hand, is acquired

for usage as beautification items. However, some special pieces of fashion

jewelry may have quite a high value as well.

In ancient Egypt gold was the preferred metal for making jewellery. It was

malleable and therefore easy to form into different shapes. In addition, it was

rare and did not tarnish easily.

In ancient Greece, beads were manufactured on a large scale and made into

flowers and other forms found in the nature.

In addition to precious stones they were also using coloured glass and enamel.

Page 6: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

All jewellery was hand made until the industrial revolution in the 18th century,

also called the machine age.

Handmade jewellery was, and still is, regarded as “the real thing” and more and

more artisans are joining the industry as hobbyists or serious business

entrepreneurs. Some of these individuals are highly appreciated artists.

Machine made items were, and are, much cheaper as they can be reproduced in

large quantities.

Still, handmade jewelry is often preferred as the pieces are usually “one-of-a-

kind”.

Classification

Besides the two main categories, Fine and Fashion Jewelry, each of these

groups are further divided up into other separate categories.

In the case of what we understand as fashion jewelry today we have jewelry

made of higher grade materials and others made of lower grade materials. Some

are machine made and others hand made.

Here is shown one fine jewelry and one fashion jewelry, which is which?

Page 8: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

When the items are new it is difficult to see any difference between the higher

grade and the lower grade products unless you are a professional in the industry.

Therefore the fashion jewelry business is open to manipulation by un-honest

players. People are very often fooled into believing they buy handmade, high

grade, products when the items are actually made with low grade materials.

The higher grade materials will keep their brightness and shine through many

years, when taken proper care of, whereas lower grade materials tend to

deteriorate much faster. The difference is difficult to see with the naked eye.

To detect whether an item is handmade or mass produced by machines is easier

as it is more obvious. Still, some cheaper, mass produced, items are tried passed

as handmade, higher priced items.

Do-It-Yourself

There is a very large market for fashion jewelry, and the number of suppliers is

constantly growing as well. Many of these suppliers are, or become, artists in

their own right creating beautiful pieces of jewelry. It is an ideal way of creating

personalized jewelry for own use and/or for distribution to others.

The cost of starting up is low and most people treat it as a hobby until they get

more experience with regards to techniques, materials etc.

There are a large amount of instruction material in the market, both offline and

online, to get you started.

First of all, try to decide on what jewelry you would like to make. Base it on

what you would like to make for yourself or your family and friends.

Some of the basic techniques you may find interesting:

Bead stringing - Fiber & Textile – Metalsmithing - Mixed Media - Polymer –

Clay - Seed Beading – Wireworking

Bead Stringing and Seed Beading is often a good point to start out with and

develop into other areas and combinations.

Tools like the set below, is a good choice and would cost you less than USD 30.

Beads

A large variety of materials are traditionally used to make beads such as jet,

wood, amber, gemstones, pottery, ceramic, metals, horn, coral, ivory,

tortoiseshell, crystal glass and pearls among others. Some modern materials

such as plastics, nylon and polycarbonate variants are also used to make beads.

Fashion jewelry can be antique, period, or contemporary and there are many

collectors of every style of Fashion jewelry. Venetian glass pieces of Fashion

jewelry are particularly collectable as well as being extremely popular for

people to wear.

Within the last 30 years or so the techniques of lampworking glass has spread to

many parts of the world and you can find artists using these techniques almost

anywhere.

One of the more well-known suppliers of quality beads is Swarovski from

Austria. (more on this later)

They deliver crystal beads of many different shapes, grades, colors etc. The

beads are slightly higher priced but are of a very lasting quality.

Be a bit careful only, there are a lot of inferior copies of Swarovski beads

around. Make sure you buy from a renowned and approved source.

A very reliable supplier is the US-based Firemountain Gems. They are the

largest supplier of jewelry making tools and materials and I have very good

experience with them.

They also have a lot of guides, ideas etc. that may be a great help for you.

Take a look at their website:

Cleaning

Fashion jewelry is easy to clean but it needs to be done often to prevent

tarnishing and keep the items in good condition. Simply use a mild detergent

mixed in water and a soft cloth.

It is important not to soak the jewelry in strong chemicals and to make sure it is

dried properly before storing it.

The main reason for tarnishing of fashion jewelry is reaction with the

atmosphere and oxidizing.

Also exposure to perfumes used by the person wearing it, body sweat and other

factors and chemicals, are affecting the condition of the jewelry.

There are some anti-tarnish papers you can buy to store with your jewelry

before you put it away for any length of time.

If you are storing fashion jewelry in a loosely sealed container like a cardboard

box the anti-tarnish paper can help keeping the jewelry in good condition for up

to 6 months whereas if a tightly sealed container like a zip-lock bag is used, it

can keep it for up to 2 years or much longer. It always depends on how well

protected the jewelry is against environmental exposure.

Regular cleaning is, however, the best defence against tarnishing.

There are some quite effective automatic cleaning equipment in the market

which can come in quite handy in most cases

Page 14: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Skin Sensitivity

Unfortunately, there are a large number of people who are unable to wear

Fashion jewelry next to their skin. This is because of their sensitivity to the

metals used. It is important to make sure that anyone that you are selling the

jewelry to, or buying the jewelry for, is not allergic to nickel, copper or other

metal combinations or types, especially with pierced earrings. Nickel is not so

much a problem anymore as most fashion jewelry is made with nickel-free

metal parts. Check with your supplier whether the metal parts are nickel-free or

not.

Fashion jewelry may look beautiful and, especially in the case of contemporary

pieces, be reasonably priced but it is not suitable for everyone to wear. For

many people a piece of Fashion jewelry may be the first jewelry that they have

worn and it is important to look out for signs of a reaction, especially after

extended periods of wear. Often people will not show a reaction if they wear the

jewelry for a short amount of time and this can be an ideal way to avoid any

possible discomfort. You can also buy a special coating that you apply to the

back of the Fashion jewelry to protect the skin from having direct contact with

the metal.

Further On Materials

There is a lot of confusion concerning crystals used in fashion jewelry today.

Most crystals used in this kind of jewelry is man-made, but also some natural

semi-precious stones are used.

The man-made crystal most resembling natural diamonds is Cubic Zirconia (or

CZ) but other crystal types are also emerging.

For a non-professional the difference between CZ and natural diamond is

difficult to see. There are a few details a trained person rely on to distinguish the

“real” from the “fake”.

Dispersion - CZ has a greater dispersion than natural diamond. I.e. a

more prismatic effect than natural diamond.

Hardness – CZ is not quite as hard as natural diamond.

Specific gravity – CZ is more than 1.5 times heavier than natural

diamond.

Flaws – CZ is produced virtually flawless whereas a natural diamond

most often has some sort of very slight defect.

Refractive index – CZ has, typically, an index of 2.176 whereas

diamonds has 2.417.

Cut – CZ is often cut differently from diamonds.

Color – CZ can be made entirely colorless, whereas only the most rare

diamonds are totally colorless.

Thermal conductivity – CZ is a thermal insulator whilst diamonds are

very efficient thermal conductors.

By adding certain metal oxides during the manufacturing process a CZ can be

produced in a variety of different colors. The development of CZ is ongoing and

a number of new or added features are emerging.

Page 16: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Other man-made crystals are of various quality with regards to shine and

lifespan of the crystal’s original look and feel.

Some of these crystals are made with added features like Aurelia Borealis (or

AB) and other types of brilliance and shades added to the basic crystal.

AB gives a multi colored shine depending on angle and light.

They come in many colors and shapes and the higher quality types like

Swarovski Crystals has a very distinct shine and accuracy in production that

retain color, shape and brilliance from one production batch to another and over

a longer period of time.

Austria is one center for manufacturing of such crystals and there are other

companies producing high quality crystals besides Swarovski, although this is

the most well-known.

These types of crystals must be regarded as amongst the highest grade of low-

priced lead crystals and very widely regarded as a mark of quality in the fashion

jewelry industry.

Another type of lead crystal for fashion jewelry is called Celestial Crystal. It is

lower in price and unlike Swarovski it is hand-cut and polished which leads to

slightly uneven shape from one crystal to another. The shine is still good and

they are also made with added features like AB.

These crystals are, as far as I know, mainly made in China but sold all over the

world.

There are also other types of crystal beads for fashion jewelry, like Czech Glass.

These beads does not have quite the brilliance as the Austrian crystal beads but

are still widely used in the fashion industry.

They are manufactured by pressing glass in a mold and thereafter roughly

faceted by machine. The beads are thereafter put back into a high-temperature

Page 17: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

oven to give the surface a glazed shimmer. This process is called fire-polishing.

These beads come in a wide variety of colors, shapes and sizes, but it is often

difficult to get exactly the same from one batch to another.

We are mainly using Swarovski beads in our products but also, from time to

time, some CZ crystals and Czech glass beads in addition to gemstones and

pearls.

Is Jewelry Expensive?

Yes and no.

Fine jewelry with gold and diamonds is at the high end of the scale and may be

more difficult to purchase due to the high cost.

Fashion jewelry is often a good choice instead as the price is significantly lower

and the products may often imitate or surpass the beauty of fine jewelry.

Especially the variation in colors and artwork etc. is almost unlimited.

Cost vs. Value

The question of expensive or not has two sides.

One is the cost in order for you to purchase the jewelry, the other is the value it

has for you, these are two separate considerations.

The cost includes the purchase price and overhead like transport charges,

insurance and other directly related costs.

The value is what the jewelry means to you, what it can do for your feeling of

wellbeing and enjoyment etc.

The most important thing is to find jewelry that will have a high value for you

compared to the price you pay for it.

Fine jewelry will often cost you 50 times more than a, more or less, similar

fashion jewelry item but will last much longer.

High quality fashion jewelry may cost 10 times more than low quality items

(these figures are just meant as general guidelines) but will last much longer.

When trying to estimate the value of a jewelry item you should take into

account how good you feel when wearing it. Next is to find out how often this

feeling can be repeated, or how often you can wear the item, how long it will

keep the shine and looks.

How long will jewelry last?

Fine jewelry will practically “last forever” so as soon as you have managed to

purchase an item that you love wearing you will have something that last a

lifetime.

Page 19: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

High quality fashion jewelry may last a number of years depending on how you

take care of it, often 10 years or more.

Low quality fashion jewelry will often deteriorate within a year, and some items

may cause harm to your skin.

Using these rough guidelines means that the value of a high quality fashion

jewelry item could be as much as 10 times higher than that of a low quality one.

When comparing prices, a low quality item should cost only on tenth of the

price of a similar high quality one.

Let’s say if a necklace made with high quality beads like Swarovski, or equally

good products, costing 100 dollars is, more or less, comparable to a low quality

jewelry product costing 10 dollars with similar original looks.

Conclusion

Fine jewelry has the highest value but the purchase price may often be too high

for your budget.

High quality fashion jewelry has a higher value than low quality items but the

price may be 5-10 times higher. It may, however, last a number of years.

Low quality fashion jewelry does not last any length of time and must be valued

as more or less a “use and throw” item.

When buying fashion, or costume, jewelry you have to look at the purchase

price measured against the value it has for you as the initial cost may be less of

an issue.

Very often, but not always, quality follow the price.

And one more thing, the higher the price of a jewelry item the more you want to

keep it from getting lost. Cost of insurance must often be included when it

comes to fine jewelry, especially nowadays when economy is not so good and

expensive items may be more prone to theft.

Page 20: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Choosing the Right Jewelry

This can be a tricky, confusing and sometimes even frustrating experience.

The following will help you choose the jewelry to buy based on your skin

tone and face, two factors that crucially affect your choice., besides other

important details.

When you want to buy a new piece of jewelry you should follow many of

the same considerations as you would when choosing a dress or other parts

of a wardrobe.

Most people tend to stick to their comfort zone and the fashion style they are

used to, but it is often very rewarding to step outside of the box and choose

something totally different.

You should choose something that matches the outfit you are going to wear and

make a finishing touch to your outfit.

What jewelry you wear on any one occasion is a fashion statement that may

signal something about your personality.

The following steps could be a guideline for your choices:

Determine what you want your jewelry to do.

1. Do you want it to dominate or compliment your outfit?

2. Do you want it to show your softness or your strength?

3. Do you want it to transmit, or make, a certain statement?

*Make sure that your jewelry is appropriate for the occasion or event you’ll be

wearing it to.

A sexy oversized choker might be perfect for a night on the town but may

not be fitting for the boardroom or for a work-out.

Page 21: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

*Determine how long you want it to last and how often you plan to wear it.

*Decide how much money you want to spend.

When you are buying jewelry, this is always the big question – how much

you plan to spend.

You might like a pair of diamond solitaire earrings, but do you

actually want to spend that much?

There are so many jewelry options available these days.

Once you decide on your budget, jewelry selection becomes much easier

and organized.

*If you can, try the jewelry or hold it up next to you to determine whether it

suits you.

*Determine if you prefer handcrafted jewelry or not.

*Determine what jewelry metal you like, Silver, Gold etc.

*Determine the jewelry style and benefits that comes with it.

For example, have a beautiful look and also a great spiritual value for the

wearer.

It attracts positive energy while eliminating negative energy from

our body and soul, due to the influence it has on our mind, our

feeling of wellness.

-----------------

Page 22: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Even though you may have a favourite designer or supplier, there’s really no

need to stick to just one and the same at all times. There is so much variety on

the market today both what concerns color and style so you should follow your

own preference but take into consideration what is mentioned in the points

above.

-----------------

Costume jewelry, both signed and unsigned, is an affordable way to

complete your look.

Costume jewelry can be bought for a low price and has plenty of life. In fact

there is costume jewelry dating back a number of decades that is still in

good conditions.

What is especially great with costume jewelry is the affordability, you can

use it, put it away, and still have had good value for your money.

-----------------

Designer and/or handmade jewelry pieces tend to be a bit more expensive but it

will usually last longer. This type of costume jewelry often follow more

traditional lines and therefore may be longer lasting also with regards to

shifting trends and you can wear them for more than one or two seasons.

Many of the producers of handmade jewelry tend to use a bit higher quality

materials and this helps the lifespan of the jewelry as well.

---------------

Page 23: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

Sterling Silver is affordable and versatile but, especially in tropical areas,

silver tends to turn “black” faster. The good thing is that it can easily be

brought back to its original glory.

If you don’t want to spend money to buy Sterling Silver, then silver plated

jewelry may be a good substitute.

Silver is acceptable for any event or occasion and is a must have for

any wardrobe.

---------------

Gold jewelry may be a bit expensive nowadays, but good gold-plated jewelry

can be a good choice instead of “pure” gold.

Be aware of the plating if you buy gold-plated jewelry. Most of the very low

priced gold-plated pieces has only a very thin layer of gold that easily wears

out.

Double plated, or thicker, layer of gold will last you much longer but is, of

course, more expensive.

Types Of Jewelry

Earrings

When purchasing earrings, realize that the shapes and styles are endless - from

dangles to chandeliers to hoops to studs and buttons.

There are materials from enamel to beads to gems to metal to wood. The size of

the earrings is very important to the statement you're making. The larger the

earring, the more noticeable and the more incorporated they become into your

total look. Large earrings aren't for everyone though - depending on your face

size and shape they may actually detract rather than attract. Experiment and find

what looks best on you.

Bear in mind that, as a general rule, tiny earrings make you look larger and

larger earrings make you look smaller.

This may be one reason why nowadays many well-known women prefer to

use slightly larger earrings. Just observe what film stars and other celebrities

are using. They are aware of this simple fact.

The shape of your face is also an important factor in choosing earrings.

See “How to choose earrings”.

Rings

When purchasing rings, you can have great fun - again the choices are endless

from large and overwhelming to dainty and feminine.

The length and size of your fingers plays an important role in what will look

good. For example, long skinny fingers don't look good with huge oversized

rings, yet on a woman that has longer and thicker fingers they look exquisite.

Long nails? Short nails? it all makes a difference. Play and see what you like,

and what looks good. Also, determine where you will be wearing these rings.

For example, if you're working around fine fabrics, you'll not want any rings

that have sharp edges that could snag. Your rings are also part of your total

statement.

Very often birthstones are worn as gemstone in a ring, either natural stone,

which can be quite expensive or imitation crystal that come with a much

lower price tag but may look just as nice.

See “Ring Sizes”

Necklaces

When purchasing necklaces, be certain you know your neck size so that you

get a good fit. This is very important when purchasing online as you don't get a

chance to try it on.

If your neck is average in size then a 40-50 cm necklace will look great,

however if you have a somewhat larger than average neck then a 40-50 cm

necklace could be too tight. Measure the length of some of your favourite

necklaces you already own. This will give you a good indication of what

length you prefer.

Opera necklaces which are over 80 cm are terrific. They can be double

wrapped, knotted, or whatever else your imagination comes up with.

Large and fancy necklaces are known as “statement necklaces”. They are

worn to catch the eyes of those who watch and it takes some more courage to

wear some of the more extreme ones, but you are sure to get attention.

When choosing colored necklaces, make sure to pick a color that

complements your skin tone. It may match your outfit fabulously but if it

doesn't match or complement your skin tone you are not optimizing the image.

See “Determine Your Skin Tone”

You may also want to choose a necklace with pendant either as a

statement necklace or just to match an outfit.

Bracelets

When purchasing bracelets, you'll need to decide where you're going to

wear them, and how noticeable you want them to be.

Your hands are your expressive area and many of us "talk with our hands."

(they are also the smallest part of our body!) Try wearing three bracelets on one

wrist - it’s a sign of power. They don't have to match either so step out and do

something different. Don't forget to wear a dainty bracelet with your watch, or if

you are not wearing a watch then something like this may fit:

The availability of size and shape is endless - you can go from large bangle

bracelets to dainty gem bracelets. If it is a slip-on bracelet, be sure that it will fit

over your hand.

Make certain to measure your wrist as the fit of a bracelet is very important.

Too large and it will look sloppy and may even slide off. Too small and it can

constrict your wrist movement.

See “How To Measure For A Bracelet”

Your jewelry choices are endless - no matter what your tastes, your likes or

dislikes, you'll be able to complete your look just the way you want it with

little effort. So be sure to have your choices make a difference!

People sometimes like to make a outspoken statement and decide to wear

jewelry with special meaning behind it. It's a lovely way to show your history

or beliefs.

A good example of this is the symbol of an inverted hand, where the

hand extended forward is a symbol of divine force. Another example, is

Celtic jewelry where the Celtic knots can symbolise the eternity of life.

Guerilla Makeovers is explaining her views concerning jewelry and

choice of jewelry.

Picking Jewelry Colors

Transcript of the video:

We have many different aspects of jewelry selection that we're going to be

discussing today.

Tip # 1- color- choosing your jewelry, first of all is based on color.

What you like.

What looks good on you.

What enhances your natural qualities?

Most jewelry, though not all, is worn near or around the face.

Necklaces, earrings, even head pieces.

The reason for this is adding some sparkle around the face can really

enhance your look, without a great deal of effort.

When we're looking at colors to enhance peoples' face, the first thing that

we look to, is their eyes.

Now, this doesn't mean that if you have blue eyes, you have to wear blue

stones. What you can do is hold various stones up to your face, to determine

which ones look good on you and which ones enhance your natural color.

Sometimes this may mean matching, but often times it means contrasting.

So, if you have brown eyes you don't have to wear brown topaz, but you may

consider amethysts, emeralds or something in a color range that will enhance

your brown eyes.

Green eyes also look wonderful with amethysts and even better with

greenish stones or yellow stones.

Everybody looks good in diamonds and everybody looks good in pearls.

White is an impeccable color for everyone, especially in a soft creamy range.

Matching Jewelry With Body Frame

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 2: Size.

When we're considering the size of jewelry that we're going to put on our client,

the first thing we think of is the size of the person.

Measure your height and your weight and determine what your bone size is in

relation to your body.

This can help you figure out if you want a chunkier jewelry, a more delicate

jewelry, or something in between.

For larger women we recommend chunky jewelry to help proportionalize

the body and give a slimming affect.

For extremely petite women, they can't carry off chunky jewelry as well

because it overwhelms them and makes them look like they're drowning

in their jewelry.

So very petite women need to stay with a more delicate or chain

oriented jewelry, for the most part.

Again this is not a hard and fast rule. It's just a guideline to help you begin your

selection.

And for men we always recommend a chunkier, more solid form of jewelry

because this almost always looks best with most men's frames.

Matching Jewelry With Personality

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 3: Personal Taste.

Of course the most important thing in choosing any form of style, whether it's

clothing, a hairstyle, makeup, or in this case jewelry, is your personal taste.

What you like is the most important thing.

If you like something and somebody tells you it doesn't look good on

you, unless you really really trust their opinion, just ignore it.

Because really, if you like something, chances are you're going to feel confident

in it and be able to pull off the look.

Then again, if you don't like something and you're only wearing it, perhaps

because it was a gift or a family heirloom, chances are you're not going to

enjoy wearing it as much as if you liked it.

Because jewelry is so diverse you don't really have to stick with a certain

style all the time.

Personal taste is absolutely up to you, completely subjective, and the

most important guideline in picking out your jewelry.

Jewelry To Fit Your Lifestyle

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 4: Reflecting Your Lifestyle.

Reflecting your lifestyle in your jewelry is a great way to help your jewelry

communicate your personality.

If for example, you like antiquing, then reflecting that in your jewelry choices

is a great way to communicate your identity.

Next time you go antiquing, take a look at their case of estate jewelry.

Most antique shops have some estate jewelry or failing that, costume jewelry

and selecting a few key pieces from this case is going to give a great identity

boost to your look.

If you prefer traveling, then look for ethnic pieces or interesting elements

when you're traveling next.

Sometimes the places you go have very distinctive jewelry styles and you

can really pick up a great look from your travels.

Or if you have heirloom pieces from your own family what a wonderful way to

communicate about yourself, your family ties, and the importance of them to

your everyday life.

It's also very nice to wear jewelry that belonged to someone in your family

because it makes you feel like they're close to you even if they've already

passed on.

What are Signature Jewelry Pieces

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 6: Signature Pieces.

This is my personal favourite tip, because I always ask my clients what, if

any, signature pieces they may have already existing in their jewelry

wardrobe. Many people have pieces that they just can't bear to part with even

for a single day.

If you find yourself wearing a single or multiple pieces of jewelry from

day today over an extended period of time, this becomes what we call your

"signature look" and those pieces of jewelry are your signature pieces.

One thing to keep in mind when you're selecting a signature piece is to make

sure that it works with most of your wardrobe, if not all of it.

It shouldn't just match your clothes. It should also accurately reflect your

lifestyle.

And remember, if you're dressing up for a formal event and your signature

piece is more casual, it can be difficult to make sure the two looks tie together.

This is an exception and one time when you may choose to leave your signature

piece at home in favour of something more dressy.

But for the most part a signature piece can really well define your personal style

and give people something to associate with you from day to day in your look

more than any wardrobe element can do because you can wear it every single

day.

And with jewelry, unlike with a hairstyle, or a favourite pair of shoes, or a

wardrobe element of some kind, it doesn't easily get worn out or become boring.

And it can be versatile for many different looks.

Matching Metal Jewelry to Skin Tone

Transcript of the video:

Metal is a great way to unify your jewelry wardrobe and it's also an important

element to remember and keep in mind when you're selecting your jewelry in

the store.

Most people have certain metals that look better on them than others.

Many people favor metals like silver, that aren't necessarily the best metal for

them.

Many people look excellent in gold or warmer toned metals like pewter.

Many people prefer metals like platinum, which are colder.

Because people have warm tones to their skin more often than they have cool

tones to their skin, gold and pewters and brass, coppers, all of the warm metal

tones, are better for more people.

However, to determine your own personal metal, find out if your skin tone

is warm or cool.

If it's cool, generally stick with metals such as platinum, white gold, silver and

stones like diamonds or pearls.

If your skin tone is warmer or ruddy, then metals like brass, copper,

and especially gold will look good on you more often than not.

However, again, the most important thing in selecting your jewelry wardrobe

is not what looks good on you, as much as what you like.

Matching Sparkle to Facial Skin Tone

Transcript of the video:

Tip number eight, Sparkle.

We talked briefly about around the face. And how that can enhance your

natural look.

This is an element that's very, very, important to bring to your jewelry

wardrobe.

Not all sparkle has to be glitzy, glittery or childish.

Some sparkle is the extreme quiet and refined sparkle of diamonds or

precious stones.

Some is the cooler glow of a pearl.

Different kinds of sparkle can communicate different moods.

If you're feeling playful, something in crystal, for example Swarovski or

Austrian crystals is definitely something that's going to be more whimsical

and playful.

And communicate that vibe to the people that are watching you when

you're wearing your jewelry.

If you are not feeling like sparkle, go for something more brushed that still has

a bit of a glow to it.

For example, for mentioned pearls or a brushed metal.

But always remember that some sparkle of some kind whether it's a dull sheen,

a burnished finish or an outright sparkle like a crystal is going to bring more

glow to your face and liven up the sparkle already in your eyes.

Casual Jewelry vs. Formal Jewelry

Transcript of the video:

Tip number ten: Formality.

It is always important to consider the event and the occasion when you

are choosing your jewelry.

A more casual occasion requires more casual jewelry. This can be

anything from a wide range of jewelry styles.

If you have a single stone on your ring, then this can be interpreted as casual or

formal.

If you have a ton of diamonds hanging around your neck, it is not

appropriate for casual.

Likewise, a ton of rhinestones or cubic zirconia if you cannot afford diamonds.

However, most people know this.

But, what most do not know is that for a formal event, it is always more

appropriate to wear formal jewelry the same way that you would wear a

formal dress.

Many times, people choose to keep on their simple, regular, casual jewelry for a

formal event.

This does not read appropriately.

If you are taking the time to get your hair done, to put on extra makeup,

and most importantly, to wear a formal gown, it just does not work to wear

your simple stud earrings and a small chain necklace to the event.

If you have to choose to do a jewelry look for a formal event, and you have

no other choices besides your simple everyday casual jewelry, choose to wear

nothing at all.

This is a great budget tip for anyone who does not have any sparkling pieces of

jewelry that are appropriate for a formal event.

And, if you can take the time to get something, there is a lot of costume jewelry

out there that looks very real, but does not cost the same amount as real jewelry.

So again, if you have a formal event and you do not have formal jewelry, either go

buy some good looking real costume jewelry, or, do not wear anything at all. Slick

on an extra layer of lipstick and go. People will appreciate it.

Mixing Metal Jewelry

Transcript of the video:

Mixing metals. We've already talked about the different metals that

work with different people's skin tones.

What we didn't discuss, is how to mix metals.

Many jewelry comes with metals already mixed.

Some people avoid this jewelry because they don't like it, or they find it messy.

Other people find it to be very fun and complex.

Again, it really depends on your personal style.

If you have a preference for one metal or another, it can get a little bit boring

if you're always wearing the same color.

One way to mix this up, is to mix different colors of metal in your jewelry.

The best way to do this successfully is to wear only metal jewelry at this

time. Instead of wearing metal chains that have something hanging off of

them, or stones set into metal, we recommend a simple cuff bracelet with

copper and brass mixed in with a cooler color, like silver, and not to overdo

it, or, several bangle bracelets in different colors of metals.

Likewise, you can have copper colored earrings and a silver necklace, as long as

they're chunky and it looks deliberate, like you're mixing them on purpose, and

not because that was all you had.

Mixing Jewelry Styles

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 12: Mixing Styles.

Like with mixing metals, mixing styles of jewelry can be a fun way to get

a little bit more complex with your jewelry.

This is definitely a more advanced technique, and not something we

necessarily would recommend doing immediately off the bat as you begin to

select jewelry. However, since we're talking about how to choose jewelry, it is

important to incorporate the notion of how to mix styles of jewelry.

Whether they're styles that you already have, or styles that you're shopping

for at the time, choosing your jewelry every morning is always an exercise in

exploration.

Depending on your mood and how you feel on a given day, you may feel like

mixing one style of jewelry, for example antique, with another style of

jewelry, for example costume jewelry.

The best way to do this is to try and keep one singular theme running

between all of the styles.

So, using our example of antique and costume jewelry, find some antique

jewelry that has some stones or one color of metal and then select your

costume jewelry also with a similar stone or metal.

It doesn't have to be the same color of stones.

Just the fact that it's stones is enough.

Or if you have a bunch of different kinds of jewelry that have different

styles but all similar colors, then that can be your single theme.

To keep a consistent theme running among your jewelry when your mixing

styles will keep it from looking messy and make you look neat, but still

intricate.

Finding Clothing with Jewelry Embellishments

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 13: Embellishments Clothing

that have accessories built in can be a fun way to choose jewelry without

selecting individual jewelry pieces.

Sometimes, clothing has embellishments built in.

Embellishments are a euphemism for beading, studding, or sequining.

There are many different kinds of embellishments on clothing that is

popular today.

Oftentimes, we see this kind of clothing in contemporary stores, for

example, Macy's or Bloomingdale's.

Because it's a very stylish and current look, you will find it more often than not.

Two things to consider when you're choosing jewelry to go with embellished

clothing.

The first thing to consider--sometimes the clothing stands alone and

doesn't need additional jewelry.

If you add jewelry, it can look messy.

The second thing to consider is, again, not to overdo it with the jewelry.

If your clothing has embellishments, then try and keep your jewelry either slim-

lined or to a single color, so that you don't overwhelm the garment or the

jewelry.

Page 42: The Exciting World Jewelry - soalza.comsoalza.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/The-Exiting-World-of-Jewelry.pdf · often man-made, although natural materials are also used to some extent.

How to Avoid Damaging Clothes with Jewelry

Transcript of the video:

Number fourteen. Consider factors such as jewelry catching on your

clothes. If you're wearing a very delicate garment, such as something made

of silk or chiffon, you don't want to wear jewelry that's going to get caught

on the clothing.

You can easily destroy a delicate garment by choosing jewelry that has

too many things sticking out of it, or harsh edges.

If you have to wear jewelry with a delicate garment, make sure that it

doesn't have any harsh edges to catch on the clothing.

If anything, you should wear your jewelry in an area of the body well away

from the delicate garment.

For example, wear a necklace or a choker that's short enough to not interfere

with the neckline of the garment.

Or wear earrings that won't dangle down onto the straps of the garment.

Most importantly, don't wear rings or bracelets that are going to get caught

on the delicate chiffon or silk of your garment or it will be destroyed.

Jewelry Hair Pieces

Transcript of the video:

Tip number 15: Hair Embellishments

These are a very creative and unusual way to wear jewelry.

When you're choosing your jewelry, don't forget about the head.

This doesn't just mean tiaras, of course.

This can mean barrettes, clips, pins, even hair elastics.

To wear a little bit of an extra sparkle around the face can brighten up your

eyes and throw high relief on your skin in a very beautiful way.

The trick here, as always, is not to overdo it, to make sure that your hair

embellishments don't fight with the rest of your jewelry, and that they enhance

you.

Sometimes clips or pins or even clip earrings can be worn in the hair as a

barrette or a hair pin.

If this is not an option for you, and you prefer to buy pre-made clips or hair pins

or barrettes, then look for something that's going to easily mimic the rest of your

jewelry so that you don't end up with all rhinestones in your hair and all metal

jewelry below the neck or on the ears.

You want, as anything, to match your styles of hair jewelry with the rest of

your jewelry, unless you are deliberately mixing styles.

Clip-On Earrings

Transcript of the video:

Finally, tip 16: Clip Earrings as pins or shoe clips.

We just mentioned using clip earrings in the hair.

This is a fun and unusual way to get a little bit creative and to make your own

jewelry in a way.

I like to go to antique fairs and buy old fashioned clip earrings,

sometimes mismatched.

Once you have a handful of these you can use them in the hair, or you can use

them as a pin, on a garment, clipped onto a neckline, in doubles clipped onto

two pockets, or on shoes for shoe clips.

If you're going this route, feel free to get creative.

The clip earrings don't have to match.

If you want them to look more clean and neat then choose matching clip

earrings and put them on both of your shoes.

If you want to go for a more funky or unusual style, then choose two similar

but unmatching clip earrings, and put both of them on your shoes or your

clothes. Or if you have one clip earring that you really love but you've lost the

mate and don't have a similar match, then go ahead and put one earring right in

your hair as a bobby pin or a hair clip.

That's all for today, and that's what we have to share with you about how

to choose jewelry.

Summary

This book does not claim to be conclusive on how to choose jewelry, just

being a guide that, hopefully, can help you a bit through the “jungle” of

fashion jewelry.

We also recommend that you consider making, or learning to make, your own

pieces from time to time. It can be real fun, but usually requires some degree

of patience.

You will find some easy-to-follow instruction videos on our jewelry blog site.

Our staff have experienced many situations in jewelry making that really call

for an inventive, creative, mind, but you will be amazed at how creative you can

be once you get started.

If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with us and we will

do our utmost to assist you.

Good luck and best regards
