I hope everyone had a pleasant Memorial Day weekend and you are ready for all the summer ac-tivities. The sewing room tours should be a lot of fun. At the Wednesday, June 18th Sewing Bee we will present Busy Aprons and Quilts to Valor Hos-pice Care at 10a.m. The Sierra Vista Herald news-
paper will also be there.
Several of our ladies spent several hours cutting fabric for the Boys & Girls project which begins in June and for the Quilts of Valor projects. Thank you for doing this. Details on these projects are
elsewhere in the newsletter. See pages 2 and 7.
A special Thank You to Dick Dolan for making and installing three new design walls for us. They are already being put to use. We have pinned kits for the QOV blocks and other projects on there.
Be sure to check them out.
If you are headed to Tucson, stop by AZ Vac & Sew/Eagle Wings Quilt Shop on 29th St. and see our beautiful 2015 raffle quilt displayed. They have it hanging behind the counter and are selling
tickets for us this summer.
Happy Sewing!

ew Member Profile – Welcome Dixie Kentros
Dixie has been quilting a few years and heard
about the HSQG at the quilt show . She learned to
quilt from a friend and in class, but hasn’t discov-
ered her favorite quilting technique. She will be
attending the morning meetings.
Dixie has lived in Sierra Vista twice: the first time,
for five years, when her husband’s company
moved them here from Alabama. Presently, she
has been here 1-1/2 years after her husband’s com-
pany moved them here from Florida.
Other than quilting, Dixie said she enjoys golf,
fishing, and embroidery. She is a volunteer giving
cave tours at Kartchner Caverns.

Flag Quilt Presented at Chapel Dedi-
cation on Memorial Day, May 26 at
the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery
This wonderful quilt, measuring 54” x
50”, was the collaborative effort of
Susie Weaver, Doris Wells, and Clara
Billock. The design and piecing was
Susie’s contribution; Clara designed
and placed the Huachuca Mountains
made from a rich pallet of batiks; and
Doris quilted a swirly, free motion de-
sign over all. Doris and Clara bound the
quilt, finishing just days before its
placement in the new chapel.
Stopping by the new Veterans’ Memo-
rial cemetery is memorable in itself, as
it is a beautiful final resting place for
our finest Americans. The new chapel
provides a shelter for services during
inclement weather.
Thanks to you from all Hummers! A
stunning and inspirational addition to
that lovely and sacred spot at the ceme-
tery off Buffalo Soldier Trail.

Free Quilting Technique Classes
Doris Wells has volunteered to teach a free quilt-ing class on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month. The afternoon sessions begin at 1:15 pm; evening at 6:15pm. Each session should last about 1-1/2 hours (this is flexible). The two sessions, afternoon and evening, will cover the same topic. The classes will start with the basics and cover making pieced blocks with rotary cutting tools and sewing by machine. Starting from an easy block, we will move on to more difficult blocks. These classes are meant to explore each topic in depth
and will take the time needed to master each topic.
Mark your calendar for the following sessions:
June 25 - Waves of the Sea
July classes TBA
Follow-on classes will look at appliqué and various other more advanced techniques. Suggestions for topics are welcome. For informa-
tion contact Doris Wells ([email protected]).
All are welcome to join the classes at any time. If you wish to get the notes so you can come when a topic is of interest to you, just drop me a note at: [email protected]. I will add you to my mailing
list and send those notes as they are ready.
Our
clubhouse has new curtains! Joy in
the morning!
Our sincerest thanks and kudos to Joy Bradley
who has contributed time and effort to making
curtains for the clubhouse. Any one who has
been in this room on Wednesday mornings
knows how intense the sun was filtering in
through the undraped windows. The curtains
are lovely. A first rate job! Thank you, Joy!
We won’t have to wear our sunglasses inside
now!

************Blue Moon************* Monday, June 30th will be a Blue Moon night. We will work on Quilts of Valor blocks. The
Quilts of Valor 2014 Hearth & Home block challenge is in full swing.
This is a friendly little contest to see if those East of the Mississippi can out sew those of us in
the West. A few current statistics:
Those in the western portion of the country have contributed 150 blocks so far with Idaho con-tributing the largest number. The eastern part of the country is not too far behind at this time with
93 blocks of which 19 have come from one single quilter in Michigan.
These blocks will be divided between those attending the QOV National Conferences in TN and NV this August and all blocks received by July 31st will be counted for the contest. We will turn
our blocks into Tucson by July 23rd.
We have block kits made up or you can use your own fabric and start making blocks now and
bring then in at any time. We have copies of the pattern available or you can download it here:
http://www.qovf.org/Pdf_Files/HearthHome_BlockPatternB.pdf . The pattern is also available
on the HSQG website.

Next stop (Wed only) is Lois Bloom’s. Go back to HWY 92 turn left. Turn left on 3 Canyons (she will try to have the gate open, but if not, you can buzz her at 378-6760 and she will let you
in. You will then turn left onto Palisades Dr. and left on Silverthrone House # is 5881.
Next will be Peggy Kenny’s. You will exit 3 Canyons and turn left and look for mile marker 336. The next street sign is S. Corgi Ranch approx ½ mile past the mile marker turn right and
follow the drive to the other side of the house; park by the arbor and go in the gate.
Last is Doris Wells’ at 901 Sims Rd. Bisbee, 520-432-2820 It is off of Tombstone Canyon. (it is the street that runs in front of the Iron Man statue. There is plenty of parking at the park or on
the street by the School House Inn. Park and you will be ferried up the road by Clara.
You can call me if you are lost and I will try and get you back on track. Have fun. I am looking
forward to seeing all the great places people sew.
