THE EUROTUNNEL

The Eurotunnel is an underwater tunnel linking France with the United Kingdom.This railway tunnel crosses the English channel below the sea floor communicating the northwest of France with the southeast of the island of England.

Its 50.5 kilometers in length allow to travel between the capitals of both countries in just 2 hours and 20 minutes by train and 1 hour and 57 minutes from London to Brussels which is a major advance for European trade the main reason for its creation .

THE AGREEMENT TO BUILD IT WAS SIGNED ON 29 JULY 1987 BETWEEN FRENCH PRESIDENT FRANCOIS MITTERRAND AND PRESIDENT MARGARET THATCHER

4000 workers of the British side and 4000 of the French worked for the excavation of the tunnels of each country that were to be in the middle of way not distancing in more than 2.5 meters. Both tunnels came together in 1991 and remained only 35 cm, which was a great success. The journey takes 35 minutes between Calais in France and Folkestone in United Kingdom. On both frontiers there are French and English police to monitor the thousands of illegal immigrants who try to take advantage of vehicle traffic from Calais to fulfill their dream of finding work and improving their living conditions in the UK.
