Farewell from theDeputy Chairman

Ät the next Ännual General Nleeting ofthe ESA, planned for this autumn, I w'illstep down as Depuq' Chairman of theESÄ. In accordance with my message tothe ESÄ Board at the last board meeting,my decision is based on my personalbelief that it is healthy for an organisationto change leadership at regular intervals.This is the main reason for my decisionand also that I have become increasingll'busy qri16 my research work in the f,reld

of intemational arts policl, andmanagement, and would like to havemore time to pursue this.

I became a board member of the ESA in1987 and have seen a great deveiopmentin Suzuki teachiflg in Europe since then.The ESA itself has also changed. Frombasically being a club of dedicatedteachers who had studied with Dr. Suzukiin Japan and who had a burnirlg desire tobnng his ideas to Europe, theorganisation has developed into a trulymulti national organisation, channellingcommunication and facilitating Suzukiteacher trainirrg. The teacher training was

qrute nghtlv the mailr focus of the ESÄfrom the beginning, and remains so tothrs da1'. The Pan European structure ofteacher training courses as well as directfunding through the Eutopean SuzukiTeaching Development Trust has createda secure basis for future development. Allthis urth a primafl: focus on qualiq,.

In mv rvork for the ESA it has always

bcen an important goal for me to makesure that the energl' and the tremendousdedicauon of all rvho participate infurthering the Suzuki Äpproach inEurope is channelled to good use. Oneimportant factor in this context is the

structure and management of the ESÄitself. T1're ES-\ must at all tirnes be an

organisation which prirnarill, sen'es itsmembers and is not only a self fulfillingcentralised bureaucracl,. I think we har.e

succeeded in this task. The key role ofthe nauorral Suzuli associations, ourpolicies ofl the structure and finances ofthe ESÄ as rvell as teacher training, are all

kev factors in makrng the ESA u,'ork. It isalso mv opinion that our strength also

comes through our di'u'ersifi. Ourdiversitr-, based on our different cultures,

different languages and differentexperience is a strength, ifrve respect

each others differences and hsten to each

other.

In mv u,crk as Depufi Chairman I have

had the privrlege to work rvith some ofthe rnost dedicated professionals I have

ever met. European Suzuki teachersand teacher trainers in all fields nevercease to

tremendous eners', creativih' andprofessionalism. These, wrth theirknowledge and dedicatiofl, are thebiggest investment of the ESÄ. I havealso eniol,ed working with colleagues irr

other parts of the wodd, notably on theBoard of Directors of the ISA. Our\rice-President Henry Turner fromwhom I took over the DeputyChairmanship has always been helpfuland supportive when I have needed

advice. I have been inspired by our dearChailperson, Fürstin Eleonore zu Salm-Salm, who with her support, §/armthand generosity has been and isinvaluable to the ESÄ's work. To all ofthese wonderful people I would like toextend mv gratirude and thanks for ailthe vears of fruitful co-operation.

Älthough I wrll be leaving the post ofDepuq' Chairman of the ESÄ at thenext ÄGN{, I wül continue to be

involved, indirectly, in theorganisation's activities as Suzukiteacher and teacher trainer. I will also

condnue, for the rime being. as

Chairman of the Board of Trustees ofthe European Suzuki TeachingDevelopment Trust, working towardsfi.d-g funding for new teachertraining proiects and supportingexisting ones.

Havrng worked in the professionalmusic wodd as an orchestral plal'er,teacher, chief executive of orchestras,principal of a governmeflt fufldedmusic school, in the academic wodd as

researcher and on various governmentmusic education committees, I have

come to realise what difference the

Suzuki Äpproach has made to theEuropean music communiq,. Dr.Suzuki's thoughts have, in many cases,

changed the way peoples andgovernmeflts vierv music education. Itis therefore irnportant to rememberthat it is not the personalities invoh,edbut the pnnciples of Suzuki teachilg inmusic and their interaction with themusic communih' as a rvhole rvhich are

the focus of a hea1th1. development.

I wish the ESA and all Suzuki teachers,

Major new Project in Poland:violin, piano, cello & guitar

A rwo-1'ear teacher training programmefor a total of 34 new teachers has iustbegun, funded by the EuropeanSuzuki Teaching DevelopmentFund (ESTDT), gready helped b1, agenerous grant from the ShinichiSuzuki Teacher Development Fund.Two previous courses, also supportedby ESTDT, have been held in Polandtraining a total of 20 piano teachers, butthis is the first loint course to includeviolin, cello and guitar here.

The first course session, organised bythe Polish Suzuki Association and itsN{usic Director Kasia Borowiak v,as

held at Opole Nlusic School from 28

January to 6 February 2002.

o The Violin Teacher Training coursefor 13 neu'violin teachers is directedby Tove Detrekö1' (Denmark),assisted by Anna Podhajska(Iceland/Poland).

o The teacher training course for 11

Jasinska atended the earlier trainingcourses run by Kasia Borowiak, isthe first Polish trained ESA graduateteacher, and has been appointed an

ESA Instructor for Piano.

o The cello course for 4 cello teachersis directed by Sara Bethge (J§.

First Suzuki Violin Examsin South Africa

In 1999 the South African SuzukiAssociation (SASA), now an associate

member of ESA, was founded by a

group of parents and teachers. TheESTDT has helped fund a violinteacher training programme directedby Christophe Bossuat, the first formalSuzuki teacher training course in SouthAfrica. It follows earlier visits byChristophe Bossuat on the inr.itation ofNicolette Solomon, a South Africanviolin teacher who trained in France,but has since moved to the USA

In December 2001,, a group of sixSouth African violin teachers passed

the first IISA exams held there, withChristophe Bossuat and KarenKimmett as teacher trainer-examiners.Karen Kimmett also started a new level

one course with ll participants.Further course sessions are planned forApril, Jull and December 2002. TheESTDT has given help towards the

cost of airfares, and is grateful toChristophe and Karen for the donationof their time to this project, and to the

SASA for organising the courses.

New Cello Course in HungaryIn July 2001 the first ESA cello exams

were held in Hungarl', following a

long-term course directed by AnetteCostanzi, and supported by theESTDT. We are grateful to theHungarian Suzuki Association fororganising the course, and to AnnetteCostanzi both for her rvork and for herfundraising efforts on behalf of the

Trust, covering the cost of most of the

grants given to this proiect. The cellocourse continues, together with trainingfor r.iolin and piano, also supported bythe ESTDT.

The violin teacher training programme inHungary was the first developmentproject to be started in Europe (from1994), k owes much to the dedicationand hard work of Tove and B6laDetreköy, who have donated all theirtime and most of their own expenses

over many years, with kind and generoushelp from other teachers including

Jeanne Janssens, Belgium and MarjaOlamaa, Finland. The first grant madeby the Trust was to the Hungarian violinprogramme (October 1995).

Other recent and future proiects

The trust has supported introductorycourses for piano teachers in the CzechRepublic and Slovakia, as well as a lectureat a European Piano TeachersConference in Budapest. Piano TeacherTrainers Ruth Miura france) and fuittaKotinurmi @inland) have held coursesfor teachers in Lithuania. All these andother areas may become future venuesfor major programmes similar to thoseestablished in Poland and Hungary.

Interest in Suzuki Method and TeacherTraining has also been expressed byindividuals living in many othercountries, such as Greece, Slovenia,Macedonia, Egypt and Russia. The trustis aiming to finance new projects in up toten different countries over the next five

combination of individual lessons forteachers and workhops with our pupils.

The rvorkshops were directed by bothTove and 861a, and it was exciting and

beneficial to be taught by and work withthem both. As it was not possible to holdexams here, we visited either Denmark orBelgium, and got to know parts of the

wider Suzuki communiq, very well, a mostpositive experience.Throughout we have been deliberatrnghow best to organise Suzuki teaching here,

and last )'ear ure fina1ly decided to foundour o$'n nationa] association. This u,a:r

busy again this year. The Finnish Suzuki

Ässociation organized the traditionalChristmas concert and g'roup lesson

u.orkshop in Dec. 2000 in Kouvola. Twoflute groups rlith two teachers practisedeagedl. and presented, for example, Sicili-enne by Faurd as a duet. The iocal audi-ence was very pleased to see such a bigflute goup.The Suzuki flute groups from Kouvolaconducted by Ei;a Puukko took part in a

national wind instrument event in Nlikkeliin February. The jury awarded prizes bothto the younger students'group and the

ICEIäNDThe most important event organised bythe Icelandic association last 1.ear wasundoubtedly the concert in November inRet.kjavrt where Mvaldi's Concerto in a-minor for violin was performed by nearly80 children, accompanied by the Rel,kjai,ikSymphony Orchestra. Ä CD wasproduced.Dunng the school year 2A)0-2001 several

rvorkshops were orga.nised in differentparts of Iceland. Children ftom Icelandalso parricipated in workshops in France,England and HungaryCurrentiy, the Suzuki method is practised in11 Icelandic music schools, violin, piano,cello, viola and singing being taughr Thereare 600 children on the rraiting jists forSuzuki lessons. Unforn:natel1,, both schoolsand teachers qualified to teach this methodare in short supply and this situation is,

sadly, difficult to change. There are around30 Suzuki teachers teaching in Iceland.Workshops for violin teachers are beingconducted and a workshop for pianoteachers will start soon. We also hope to setup a trainiflg course for cello teachers.In December 2001, children from theIcelandic Suzuki Association were invitedto perform, together with the IcelandicSlmphony Orchestra, Bach's Concerto forTwo Violins (1st movement) and a

selection of Chrisnr-ras carols.

Phillipa made a hugecontribution to our programme both as

a teacher of children from a very youngage, and in more recent years, as a

trainer of new teachers. Ronald sparedno effort in establishing, with Phillipa,the Suzuki education Institute ofIreland, and was hugely supportive at alltimes. His work in accompanf ing ourstudents added greatly to theirenjol.ment. §7e thank them both fortheir work and commitment and wishthern well in their retirement. We rvillmiss them gready.

Piano: There is overwhelming demandand interest in Suzuki Piano in Ireland.Our lone Suzuki piano teacher,Catherine OlSullivan Gallagher teachingin Dublin for or.er 10 y.ears, wouldwelcome another trained Suzuki pianoteacher. We could guarantee a fullschedule ofteaching after school hours.

Teacher Training in IrelandCello: 2000-2001 marked the start ofSuzuki Cello Teacher Training inIreland. There were 4 tra.inees on thefirst year's course, with exams inOctober 2001 followed b.v the FirstAnnual Children's Cello Course. \X/e arever). grateful to Penny, Heath fortravelling to Ireland to train the teachersand to Phil tsuckley and her students fortheir ongoing co-operation. teenagers chose to go to the violin andchamber music course in Bohus Maimön.This year we were glad to welcome twoguest teachers from abroad: Joanne Bath,USA and Wilfried Van Gorp, Belgium.

Joanne Bath came to Sweden togetherwith 30 of her own violin students. Beforethe workshop in Arvika they made a

concert tour. Together with Srvedishstring students they gave two charmingconcerts with classical music pieces as wellas American and Swedish folk music.
