EXT. SCREENWRITER'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

The sky is full of stars and the suburban house has a lighton in the upper room.

SCREENWRITER (V.O.)It was cold, but sometimes I liketo work with the window open.Looking at the stars relaxes me...

Through the window we see a silhouette seated in front ofa desk.

SCREENWRITER (V.O.)...and gets me in a good mood, asif I would be listening to an oldloved melody. The only sound thatbroke the silence was my typing inthe computer.

INT. OFFICE - SCREENWRITER'S HOUSE -- NIGHT

It's an old fashioned office with a shelf full of books, adesk with a computer and two chairs. The SCREENWRITER isseated on one; the second chair is on the other side ofthe desk, empty.

The empty chair creaks, it sounds like someone is taking aseat.

The Screenwriter stops typing and glances at the chair.

It becomes blurry.

SCREENWRITERWhat the...?

Little by little the blurry image turns into some kind ofliquid with a human-like shape. It gradually becomes moredefinite until we finally see who's seated on the chair. It's a man with very short blond hair in his 50s, eyesclosed, dressed in a silver nylon suit.

The Screenwriter stares at him in disbelief, his eyes andmouth wide open.

The STRANGER opens his blue eyes and scares the hell outof the screenwriter, who shakes, startled in his own seat.

STRANGER(scanning the place)

I'm in earth I guess.

His look is the one of a wise man.

STRANGERYou don't need to answer, I knowI'm in earth and please don't bescared-- there's no need to. We'rein the twenty-first century, around2009, right? I can see that inyour papers, I'm no foreteller.

(beat)I can see you read a lot, what doyou do?

SCREENWRITER(stuttering)

Em... I'm a writer...

STRANGERNovels?

SCREENWRITERA screenwriter. Movies.

STRANGERScreenwriter... well that'ssomething. Of all the houses inthis world, ending up in yours.

Beat.

SCREENWRITERYeah... Who are you? Where didyou come from?

STRANGER(smiles)

Hah! That's not an easy questionto answer. I could give youthousands of names, all of themmine, but maybe the most accurateone for you to understand all ofthis was given to me by a Greekphilosopher. He called me theETERNAL VOYAGER in order to explainin two words my condition of timetraveller, my sad and desolatetravelling through centuries-- Iwas lucky to end here today, I canfeel that after all this time Imay be able to rest a little bit.

He scans the place again.

ETERNAL VOYAGER (CONT'D)You could give me a place to rest, could you? I only need somewhereto lay on and recover because I'mtired, terrible tired. And I needto rest so I can keep onsearching...

The Eternal Voyager looks down with sorrow and angst.

ETERNAL VOYAGER (CONT'D)Because that's what I always do:search, search, search...

They both stay in an awkward silence for a few beats.

SCREENWRITERI don't know... this is all verystrange to me. What you're asking--

ETERNAL VOYAGERI know what you're thinking: "thiscrazy dude comes out of nowhereand wants to stay in my place andI still don't know who the hell heis." Well, let me tell you mystory then, so you will be ableunderstand everything.

SCREENWRITER (V.O.)And so I listened. I listened allnight long.

ETERNAL VOYAGER (V.O.)It was such a cold night that allof our windows were closed. Fromthat detail only depends the factthat I could live to tell thisstory. My friends were Favalli, aphysics professor...

Favalli, 40, neat, chubby, double-chin, smart-looking,uses thick acrylic glasses and a moustache. He looks deeplyconcentrated in his cards.

JOHN SAFEBad, really bad...

LARRYWell that's not my case.

John grabs Favalli's arm in a friendly gesture.

JOHN SAFEIt's useless to blame it on you,Fav, we have to think aboutourselves.

LUCAS(to Favalli)

What are you saying? We can't staylocked forever. We can't survivehere!

We're going to die. We're gonnastarve to death.

FAVALLINo, that's not going to happenbecause we're not waiting for anyhelp. We can't depend in anyonenow, this disaster is far beyondany of my expectations.

JOHN SAFEEventually we'll need to go outside.

FAVALLII already thought about that. Wecan adapt the diver equipment youhave up in the attic with rubberand make some kind of snow-proofhermetic suit to let us go outsideand get anything we might need.

LUCASWhat if those are radioactivesnowflakes?

FAVALLIIf they were we ought to be deadby now. The windows don't stopradiation.

JOHN SAFEI think you're right. And we caninstall a filter in the garage tokeep the snowflakes out of thehouse.

LUCASAnd we can go get food then.

FAVALLIYes, that too. But I think thepriority number one is going to befire weapons because you only havea revolver, right?

(sarcastic)What kind of American are you Johnwith only one gun in the house?

JOHN SAFEA peaceful one-- Why do you thinkwe'll need guns?

Hah, of course he can. He takescare of everything. He has so manyideas.

John catches the message between the lines.

JOHN SAFENow, why'd you say that?

LUCASI've been thinkin' John, he has usin his power. He knows so muchabout everything and we know solittle. Why should a man like himshare his life with us? Haven'tyou thought about that? He doesn'tneed us.

JOHN SAFEWhat's your point?

LUCASMy point is this: when we stopbeing useful to him he would manageto get rid of us.

How can he say such a thing?

JOHN SAFEWhat?

LUCASYeah, you see, it's so easy now.All that it takes is a tiny holein the suit and a single snowflakecould kill you.

I'm going back with Helen andMattie.

FAVALLIBut what we found out could beuseful--

JOHN SAFEUseful for who? There's no army, not even a single organized force. We're the only survivors theyhaven't turn into robots, we--

John interrupts himself as he realizes Favalli and Dannyare looking at the sky. He turns and sees three missilescoming down not far away from where they are.

They fall all the way down between buildings but nothinghappens.

DANNYWhat was that?

FAVALLISee John, those missiles are tellingus that there are more survivorsand they are fighting.

JOHN SAFEIf those were missiles, why didn'tthey explode?

FAVALLIThat's exactly what we must findout.

John plays with his hair nervously.

FAVALLIWe can't go back. Any bit ofinformation we can get from now oncan change the fate of the world.

DANNYI think you're right. We should gocheck a little further. Maybe wecan see something. Then we can goback.

John thinks for a moment, his face overloaded with anguish.

JOHN SAFEOkay. Just a little more.

They walk for a while and turn in the first street. Twomore missiles fly in the sky and fall.

They reach the corner of a street and encounter three Men.

Before the Men are able to do anything they SHOOT themdead.

FAVALLIWoah, they scared me.

DANNYThere's more over there.

Another Man comes out of the opposite corner at the end ofthe street. He raises his hand, pointing at them. Fivemore Men come out and join him.

The Men get to FIRE at them twice but fail and John andDanny kill them.

JOHN SAFEWe've to go back. If they sendmore people we're done.

Favalli and John talk in whispers.

JOHN SAFEYeah. Hey, where are we going?

Danny sees one of those tall alarm posts about a blockaway.

EXT. BUILDING ROOF -- NIGHT

John, Danny and Favalli come out of the stairs and intothe roof.

From up there they can see the Grand Hope Park completelyoverloaded with small one-person spaceships in the right, two big transparent 'sandwich' packages with fleas comingout of them on the left, six Colossus in the far end, anda huge lightened half-ball in the middle that looks like acircus carp.

All around the park there are Hands with their controlsand big tall alarm posts, one of them much bigger and witha green ball on top of it.

John, Danny and Favalli stand speechless. Favalli drainshis eyes to see better now that he has no glasses.

FAVALLIAnyone has a pen?

DANNYMe, why?

FAVALLIAnd a piece of paper?

DANNYHem--

JOHN SAFEI do.

DANNYWhatcha wanna do?

FAVALLIWe need to get the exact locationof everything we're watching rightnow.

One more missile crosses the sky. They lift their heads towatch it.

In the park one Hand moves his fingers over his controlsand a moment later a weird futuristic machine throws a rayto the missile.

It seems like nothing happened but when the missile hits abuilding it doesn't explode.

FAVALLISo that's how they do it. Theyneutralize the atomic charge andmake the missile useless.

Many Hands rush form one machine to the other.

DANNY(pointing at thesky)

Look over there!

ON THE SKY

Three jets cross the sky towards the park.

Lights come up from the park machines and hit two of thejets, the third one turns in the last moment but insteadof leaving it comes back kamikaze style.

The two planes that were hit by the ray crash into thenearest buildings. The third one gets to throw three bombsbefore being hit by a ray and crashes into a building likethe others did.

DANNYHe did it!

ON THE PARK

The bombs get to the park, and although they don't hit thecenter where the dome is located, they leave an incrediblemess all around the place. Many of the small spaceshipsare set on fire. John, Danny and Favalli bend down to avoidthe heat.

When they are able to watch again they see two Hands deadin front of their controls.

ON THE PARK

A moment later the remaining Hands are organized, extremelyquickly recovered. The biggest post in the middle of thepark turns from green to red.

ON THE ROOF TOP

FAVALLIWe've seen enough. We can't getcaught with this amount ofinformation. You got the drawing?

DANNYYeah, kinda-- What do we know?

They walk toward Favalli and touch, knock and kick theinvisible wall in desperation.

Favalli quickly loses his faith. He cleans his nose withhis shirt. Danny becomes hysteric.

DANNYThere must be a way! We have tomake a hole in the roof, maybe thewall doesn't reach the lowerapartments, maybe--

FAVALLIIt's useless. This is probably agravitational shield so it makesno difference if there's a roof ornot.

They load and cock their guns and rifles, hide and preparefor the Men to come.

Moments later, the first group of Men appears through theroof stairs door. They RIDDLE them all, not letting anyMen step outside. Three Men fall dead over each other atthe door entrance.

More Men appear through the door, walking over the deadbodies. John, Danny and Favalli SHOOT again but eventuallythey have to release the magazines of their weapons and re-load; this gives a chance to four Men to get out of theroof, SHOOT at them and fail.

Danny leaves his coverage place to get better a positionand SHOOTS at the upcoming Men.

The situation starts to get out of control as they beginto run out of ammo and don't have enough time to re-load.Many Men are now on top of the roof.

Danny bounces over the dead Man's body.

DANNYTrust me, I've an idea.

He takes it and goes over the corner of the roof.

John and Favalli resist at their best. They are usingpistols now, the last weapons they have.

HELEN(hysteric)

What? More of them?

JOHN SAFENo... it's...

John opens the back door completely revealing the sight ofa round small silver thing that looks like a spaceship, aweird machine just a few steps away from the barn.

HELENOh my god. What the hell is thatthing doing there? Why didn't wesee it from the road?

JOHN SAFEI guess the barn blocked our sight.

Outside there's an EXPLOSION from the irrigation ditch.

John holds Helen's hand and they share a moment of anguishand understanding just by looking at each other.

John turns and stares at the silver thing.

It's decided. Johns enter the spaceship with his machine-gun in hand.

INT. SPACESHIP -- CONTINUOUS

Several impossible futuristic artifacts are set up allaround the interior of the ship. There is one big thingpointing at the middle of the room that looks like a laserbut it isn't. There's also a table with controls similarto the ones the Hands use but not quite the same.

Standing at the door John scrutinizes the place. It's empty.

JOHN SAFEIt's okay, come in. Quickly.

Helen and Mattie enter the ship.

John touches many colored little screens arranged aroundthe door.

The door closes by itself in complete silence.

JOHN SAFESee, it's not so difficult afterall.

He walks over the controls. They differ a lot from theones the Hands used. These have seven handles, besides thehundreds of buttons and little colored screens like theones around the door.

HELENYou think we'll be safe here?

JOHN SAFEI don't know. The best would be toget the hell outta here... If Icould just turn this thing on.

John inspects all the handles. His eyes move up and down, his hands are about to touch a button but he stops, thenhe's about to touch another one and stops again.

JOHN SAFE(to himself)

Where should I begin? There's somany buttons.

He stares at the only red button, bigger than the rest. He turns at Helen, she doesn't say anything.
