Networked business processes were in demandThe orthopedic specialist firm of Stephan Riedl is known across the region for its high-quality services. The company’s internal processes were very conventional, however: billing, cash register transactions, the management of the digital treatment and measurement room, as well as personnel planning, were mainly manual and paper-based. The same applied to the preparation of business reports, the storage of customer data and the administration of the branch office in the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik Murnau. Stephan Riedl formu-lates the challenge in this way: “We were no longer able to manage the processes in this manner. Therefore we were searching for a feasible way that would allow us to digitize and connect all business processes based on a consistent design.” Help was sought from a professional and powerful digitization solution.

To this end, Stephan Riedl consulted his local IT partner Oberland IT. Oberland IT experts conducted a fundamental analysis of the operational processes and developed a well-thought-out concept for a tailored and viable IT solution that was based on Fujitsu technologies. “What was needed was a PC that does not take up much space, works quietly and provides an adequate number of serial interfaces,” explains Markus Linderer, Business Customer Support at Oberland IT. Another objective was to connect the various rooms, such as the administration office, sales floor, treatment room, workshop and warehouse, to a continu-ous IT infrastructure and seamlessly exchange data. “We have enjoyed a successful and trust-based relationship with our partner Oberland IT for many years. Based on our good experience, we contacted them and engaged them to digitize our company processes,” confirms Riedl.

ESPRIMO Q at the heart of digitalizationThe centerpiece of the IT solution is the FUJITSU ESPRIMO Q957 mini PC, a front end device that meets the defined requirements with preci-sion. Oberland IT installed a total of nine mini PCs in all rooms of the orthopedic company, including the office, cash register area, treatment room, workshop, warehouse and the branch office at the Unfallklinik Murnau. On the software side, a central merchandise management system connects all business data and processes — all the way to the health insurance company. A special feature: In the treatment room, the orthopedic shoemakers use a modern scanner to measure the feet of the patients and then prepare an electronic footprint. The scan-ner, which is connected to the ESPRIMO Q, visualizes the electronic measurement data of the foot on a 40” display monitor. In this way, the results can be illustrated to the patients, and the corresponding treat-

ment measures can be explained. The digital scanner data is directly forwarded to the ESPRIMO Q in the workshop via a network, and displayed on the monitor. The shoemaker then uses this data to make a custom-fit shoe.

Low-noise, reliable and energy-efficientThe ESPRIMO Q is also custom-fit: It is only slightly larger than a CD, but very powerful. In addition, the mini PC emits very little noise. With a static picture and in input mode, it only generates 17dB, which is outside of the audible range. Another positive feature is the high energy efficiency: The mini PC only uses 16.5 kilowatt hours per year, which is only half the amount of most competitor devices. This was confirmed by certified test measurements in the lab. Based on the stylish and representative design, it is optimally suited for all rooms involving patient or customer contact. Another important feature for Riedl: The ESPRIMO Q was devel-oped and made at the Fujitsu plan in Augsburg. Not only does this secure workplaces in Germany, but the proximity also ensures reliable, rapid and German-speaking local services. The device has also received a special seal of approval from Stiftung Warentest: In a comparative test in October 2016, the ESPRIMO Q was ranked highest among eleven mini PCs.

Stephan Riedl is very satisfied: “I will use the ESPRIMO Q to gradually depict all processes on a digital basis. This makes a major contribution to my ability to manage the business efficiently. Without this technol-ogy, I would not be able to comply with future regulations that require complex supporting documents even from small companies in the medical industry. The solution has greatly relieved me from administra-tion and invoicing tasks, allowing me to concentrate on my patients and providing the optimum care. In addition, I am now able to offer my patients value-added services using digital solutions, while also lower-ing energy costs.”
