The Equlibrial
Sense(Body
Balance)

Equilibrial Sense is also called VESTIBULAR , STATIC or BALANCE
SENSATION.If the other sense receptors are not stimulated, this sense make it possible for us to know whether we are :1.Falling or going up2.Rotating or standing3.Going upward or downward4.Going right side up or up side down.

Meanings:responds to a change in your head position or having your feet lifted off of the ground;
refers to your sense of balance;
tells us the body orientation in space,
and the sense of body orientation with respect to gravity.

1. PHYSICAL (Stimulus)– This sense is stimulated by:a. changes in speed of rotation of
the head, which affects the semi-circular canals of the inner
ear.b.Changes in the speed of
movement and changes in gravity, which stimulates the receptors in the vestibular portion of the inner
ear.
STAGES:
![Page 6: The equilibrial sense](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022070513/5887f1071a28ab7d5c8b6093/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
2. PHYSIOLOGICAL (Receptor)
*Changes in the speed of the rotation of the head stimulate the three Semi-circular canals in the bony labyrinth of the inner ear.
*These canals are filled with endolymph. *The rotation of the head moves this liquid and
pressure is applied on the Cupula, a membrane at the base of the semi-circular canals.
*The pressure on the cupula produces nerve impulses registered at the Cerebellum in the Hindbrain.
*A change in Gravity, speed or movement deforms the hair cells in the vestibular sacs between the semi-circular canals and the cochlea.
*Pressure on the OTOLITHIS or crystals in the hair cells will send nerve impulses to the brain.

3. PSYCHOLOGICAL (Receptor)
The sense regulates the total mechanism of the of BODILY BALANCE.
