From the Senior WardenWe all should be proud of our efforts to help make Wilson a better community.

In the short time that I have been serving as your senior warden, I have found myself looking at what we do at St. Timothy’s in terms of fellowship and what that means to us and to our community. The mission of St. Timothy’s and of all Christians churches is to know Jesus and to make him known to the world. This is no small endeavor. We engage in this mission when we gather for worship, when the vestry and commission chairs meet in their respective groups to discuss our parish

activities. Our church supports various outside organizations that are working to help others. We all should be proud of our efforts to help make Wilson a better place to live and play.

St. Timothy’s is a congregation that enjoys time together, talking together, playing together, sometimes thinking deeply about things that matter, together. This fellowship helps us become better connected. It helps us encourage one another and hold one another accountable to our mission. Our prayers become more effective when we know each other more than casually. Friendship, Christian friendships, grow out of time spent together in meaningful ways, ways that can be both purpose-driven and recreational.

August brings us Vacation Bible School (August 7–11). We need our parents to sign up their own children and to invite their friends’ children. We need volunteers to help Charlotte and Judy as they are preparing a great program for our kids. This year’s theme is “Maker Fun Factory.” That sounds entertaining as well as educational. Please call the church office if you can help in the coming week leading up to VBS and during the week of VBS.

Enjoy August! I look forward to seeing you in church.Yours in Christ

Reflections from the RectorSt. Timothy’s Rector!

Friday, July 28, has come and gone, and one of my colleagues will be the next bishop of East Tennessee. I have the joy of remaining your rector for the foreseeable future. What have I learned so far from the bishop election process? First, I have learned how much I love St. Timothy’s. When I learned that East Tennessee wanted to do a Skype interview in February, I realized that there was a serious possibility of my leaving St. Timothy’s, and I grieved. I realized that if I were elected, that I would not be baptizing children soon to be born, nor presiding over the weddings of some of our young adults, and would not have the privilege of burying some who I had been accompanying on their spiritual journeys. And I would have missed the next Bake Sale!Second, I would not have met my four colleagues and friends, the other nominees, and could not have spent such intentional time with them, praying together and talking about God and God’s people. The experience extends to the people who worked on the Search and Nominating Committee and the Transition Committee as well as the Episcopalians of East Tennessee. Their faith and their joys have given me much confidence in the future of our tradition. Just as East Tennessee was privileged to hear of the wonderful ministries that we have here in Wilson, East Tennessee has some very interesting ministries that we may wish to look at.Third, I have spent much of 2017 formulating a vision of ministry and thinking more strategically about the future of the Episcopal Church. If I had not been a part of this process, I might not have done this work as intentionally. You have heard some of this vision as I was creating it. The Episcopal Church has a particularly important voice in welcoming all in the work of reconciliation with God through the theological concepts of hope (Romans 8:25) and love (Luke 6:35). We are the Episcopal Church for a certain area. We are the Episcopal Church not just for our fellow members, but for everyone, even if they never become Episcopalians. Applying this long-term vision for St. Timothy’s now becomes the work for the vestry and me. Yes, there will be some mourning on my part about not being elected. This is normal. But I am serious that there is joy as well. St. Timothy’s has the spiritual gifts and strength to be a strong and loving voice of Christian faith in a world that so desperately needs to hear those words of hope, of love, of reconciliation. I am honored to be part of this community of faith.

100th Anniversary TSSF Provincial Convocation Laser Focuses Rebuilding Church in 21st Century

From June 20 to 25, I spent the week in the area surrounding Cincinnati, Ohio, encircled by Franciscans from all over the Americas Province. Only our Cuban brothers were missing because of an unexplained response from the United States government refusing to allow them to join us. But their spirit was with us. Visitors came from England, Africa, and Hong Kong. There were ecumenical visitors from the Roman, Methodist, and Lutheran denominations. Together, we dreamed about rebuilding the Church focusing on ministry. In small groups, large groups, and committee of the whole, we discussed ways that we could bring the order and the Church to people who weren’t going to come into the church by traditional means. We discussed how to serve people where we find them and help them along their search for the Spirit whether the seekers ever make it into an Episcopal Church. We looked at successes, failures and pipe dreams. We discussed the problem of rebuilding the buildings and ignoring those who needed ministering to. Fr. Murray Bodo, our keynote speaker, in one lunchtime conversation, posed the question, “Who are we rebuilding the buildings for? Those who have carried the church through the last half of the century will be gone. New seekers won’t be there unless we change what we’re doing now. If we haven’t listened to the new searchers and understood that they are not going to follow our established traditions, who are we keeping the tradition for? Everyone else will be gone.” In small groups, we discussed the pain of seeing once thriving churches being repurposed for police annexes and office buildings. We discussed the closed door political actions that vestries took that reduced the possibilities for ministry and ultimately reduced the congregations to the point where the parishes dwindled so that the buildings were repurposed. We also discussed the mistakes that clergy made that were a part of those same issues. We discussed the people who came with ideas but were told to hold them until they learned the Episcopal way at the local parish church. After the seekers were told to hold their piece, in every story, they walked away never to be seen again. Out of these discussions came the realization that people are on a spiritual quest. Some, without

Announcements knowing it, are following Francis’s and Jesus’s path to the Father. But, they are not willing to be conformed to the expectations of previous church members as neither Francis nor Jesus were. We then discussed how many widely different traditions make up the Episcopal church noting that anyone who thought that there was only one Episcopal way was missing the point of being a part of our tradition. We looked with Franciscan joy on a church in the midst of revival which will look very different from what we have now.We saw two movies that spoke to that change that the denomination and the order is experiencing, Finding Francis and Francis and the Sultan. These theatricals reminded us that Franciscan simplicity and thinking outside the box can be a part of the solution for the entire Christian Church, the denomination, and the order.Presiding Bishop Michael Curry was spoken of often as someone who could preach us there, but we were reminded that we had to be God’s hands and feet in seeing this change into reality and being a joyful part of preserving the important parts of the tradition, as well as enjoying the sharing that the changes will bring. There was a Spirit of “We Can Do This” coupled with a caution to listen to all of those affected and not run over those in need as we move forward. That same Spirit reminded us that many different trials will be needed to suit the needs of each parish and needy population. That same Spirit moved through the liturgies from the opening to healing to closing as all who shared in the discussions ate and drank together at the table toasting to “That they all may be one celebrating our diversity” sharing God’s joyously cared for creations. We’ll talk about living in an ever-changing diocese and parish next time.

Deacon Bob Thomas, TSSF

Dear Parishoners,If you have a young one who wishes to learn how to play the piano and read music, give me a call. I charge a modest fee.Train a child the way that he or she would go that they would never depart, the proverb admonishes. After all, one day, in all the world’s arenas, the torch will will be carried by the young. Every youth should be able to read the musical notation of the 1982 with ease as well as play any hymn contained therein. Sure, Hymns MUST be played with a certain rigour and reverence respective to the subject of them all: the Creator. But this comes with experience and guidance rather than cold instructions. Do not let the generation before you be the last hope, but endow our youth with the tools and confidence that they may be the last hope.

I want to start by thanking all of the people who have given very generously to this huge project. For that we are in your debt. If not for you, this beautiful church would have to close for the remainder of time. Again, thank you.To date we have in pledges, land, stock, and earnings from our restricted account for capital improvements—drum roll please!—$1,448,821.30. that is $51,178.70 short of our goal of $1,500,000.00. We also had an estate that had $50,000 granted to St. Timothy’s, but it looks as if we are not going to get that, though I do not know why. With that we would be there. But no horse shoe. We are still working hard to collect more moneys from the people who have not given or responded at all. We have some long-time members who are in that group; for that I am very sorry and disappointed. As you read this, we should have started the work on the roof, capstones, and masonry repairs. Maybe that will spark some more pledges. So far we have replaced the HVAC and done work on the organ; about $350,000 for those projects came from our total. The work that is starting now will cost us another $700,000 or more in the next few months, so money is important. If you could see a way to pay your pledge early, that would save us interest on the $700,000 line of credit that we would love not to use. So that is about all I can tell you at this time. I think it is a great start. With your help and God’s help, we will get there!Again, thanks to all of you!

God’s peace Mike Miller

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Due to the excessive detritus falling in the sanctuary from its renovation work, Sunday worship has moved to Anderson Hall until renovations are completed. The sanctuary is currently off limits to prevent foot traffic from grinding dirt and debris into our carpet and wood floors. Come worship with us in Anderson Hall. The light is great in there!
