Report of the Standing Committee to the 80th Convention

of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma

In the Diocese of Oklahoma, members of the Standing Committee also serve on Diocesan Council and meet regularly as part of that body. The bishop does occasionally convene the Standing Committee separately in our capacity as his confidential Council of Advice. Many other canonical functions of the Standing Committee only are relevant when the diocese is without a diocesan bishop to serve as the Ecclesiastical Authority.

Since the 79th Convention of the Diocese on November 4-5, 2016, in addition to actions taken in our role as an integral part of Diocesan Council, the Standing Committee took the following official actions:

1. We gave canonical consent for the consecrations of duly elected bishops in the following dioceses: Diocese of Indianapolis - Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows as Bishop Diocesan; Diocese of Spokane – Rev. Gretchen Mary Rehberg as the Bishop Diocesan; Diocese of North Carolina – Reverend Samuel S. Rodman, III as Bishop Diocesan; Diocese of West Texas – Rev. Jennifer Brooke-Davidson, as Bishop Suffragan; Diocese of Los Angeles – Rev. John Harvey Taylor as Bishop Coadjutor; Diocese of San Joaquin – Rev. David Capell Rice as Bishop Diocesan; Diocese of Delaware – Rev. Kevin Brown as Bishop Diocesan; Diocese of East Tennessee – Rev. Brian Cole as Bishop Diocesan.

2. We approved the admission of seven persons to candidacy for holy orders: Beth Bell, Spencer Brown, Michael Clements, Mary Ann Coffman, Stephen Miller, Tony Moon, and Ann Murray

3. We consented to the ordination of eight persons to the sacred order of deacons: Dion Crider, José “Cuco” Escalera, Robert Keith Fallis, Robert Scott II, James Tyree, Rocío Lopez, Shawna Turner, and Justin Boyd

4. We consented to the ordinations of two persons to the sacred order of priests: Caleb Roberts and Andrew Scott

EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF OKLAHOMA Report of the Constitution and Canons Committee

to the 80th Convention of the Diocese

The Constitution and Canons Committee consults with the Bishop, Standing Committee and Diocesan Council regarding the Constitution and Canons of the Church and Diocese. It also maintains the Diocesan Canons through periodic amendments to ensure their currency, effectiveness and compliance with the General Canons and reviews amendments proposed by others to confirm their proper form. The Committee has also prepared and maintains a model form of bylaws for use by congregations and institutions and advises congregations and institutions that are amending their bylaws.

The Committee is proposing no amendments to the Diocesan Canons at this Convention. Since the 79th Convention, it reviewed and revised proposed bylaws for three congregations.

The Committee encourages input about the Diocesan Canons and its work.

OKLAHOMA COUNCIL ON INDIAN MINISTRY

2017 CONVENTION REPORT

The Oklahoma Council on Indian Ministry (OCIM) has enjoyed a banner year in 2017, beginning with the Bishops Native Collaborative asking OCIM to host a WinterTalk meeting at St Crispin’s in late January. With 55 attendees from Alaska, Washington, California, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Hawaii, and Oklahoma, the meeting was a grand success in renewing old acquaintances, bonding with new friends, strengthening of our Native Values, discussion of mutual issues facing native people, and overall loving our neighbors as ourselves. The meeting was highlighted by the announcement that the Reverend Bradley Sylvan Hauff had been appointed as the Missioner for Indigenous People and his first act was to join us at WinterTalk even before he officially began his duties. Presiding Bishop Curry sent his Canon to the Ordinary, Michael Hunn to join us and let us know that Native Ministry was most important to grow and maintain a strong presence within the Episcopal Church. The consensus was that OCIM should again host WinterTalk 2018 this coming January. The Diocese of Oklahoma served as host for the 2017 Episcopal Youth Event and OCIM provided speakers to welcome the youth and also to demonstrate Native Stomp Dancing on “Oklahoma Night”. Currently Missioner Hauff has asked those Dioceses with significant Native Episcopal population to serve on an advisory Council for him concerning Native Ministry issues in all provinces. Oklahoma will be among those Dioceses represented on this Council. September 9th was the date selected for the 31st David Pendleton Oakerhater Honor Dance, which is annually celebrated at the Whirlwind Mission of the Holy Trinity in Watonga, Oklahoma. This year’s celebration was a grand success also as over three hundred people attended the Eucharist, evening meal and Powwow dancing until well after midnight. Whirlwind’s mission statement to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Christian message of David Pendleton Oakerhater to Native peoples of Oklahoma while honoring their culture and traditions was warmly received by all those attending. OCIM looks forward to 2018, strengthening our involvement with Native Episcopalians to provide a sense of community and spiritual strength to all. Submitted Faithfully, Buzz McDonald Chairperson

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN Diocese of Oklahoma - 2017 OUR MISSION: We are Sisters in Christ. We are every Episcopal Woman lay or ordained. We are committed to prayer, listening, leadership, study, service, giving and fellowship. The Episcopal Church Women's organization is made up of all women of the church. While individual churches may not have a formal organized group called ECW, this does not preclude the women in that church from membership in this state-wide organization. The Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Oklahoma offers programs throughout the year for the women of this diocese and their guests. We encourage all women to fully participate in Diocesan ECW events that will support them in their mission and ministry. Examples of the programs offered to the women in our diocese include our Women's retreats – held twice a year at St. Crispin’s Camp and Conference Center. In addition to our retreats, programs are often presented in each of the regions of the diocese. Each spring we hold our Annual Conference & Bishop's Day which brings women together from around Oklahoma for prayer, education and fellowship. In the year prior to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, delegates are elected to represent our diocese at the Triennial of the Episcopal Church Women which meets concurrently with General Convention. The next Triennial will be held in July 2018 in Austin, Texas. Four women were elected at the 2017 Annual Conference and Bishop’s Day to represent our diocese at the 2018 Triennial. Retreats held in the Spring and Fall at St. Crispin's are well attended by Episcopal Women. They have also served as an excellent opportunity for outreach as attendees often recruit women from outside the Episcopal Church to join them for spiritual renewal and study offered at these events. The Reverend Debora Jennings continues to instruct and entertain with topics and activities very popular with our members and guests. The February 2017 retreat was the first ever, “Do It Yourself” retreat, The retreat was well received by the women attending, and most of the women commented that it should be an annual retreat option! The 2018 dates for the Women’s retreats are February 23-24 and October 5-7. Episcopal Women support many ministries within the state and across the nation. Each year we publish the “Blue Book”, our directory which is distributed to all clergy, churches and diocesan leaders, organized ECWs, key women, and churches. In addition, women of the church support the greater community including New Hope Ministries, Whirlwind Mission, United Thank Offering, Church Periodical Club, Cursillo, The Bishop’s Cup, Summer Camp and others. This year at the Annual Conference and Bishop’s Day, the alms collected were given in support of New Hope Ministries. We supported the National ECW board members with an Oklahoma

contribution to their welcome basket when the national board met in Dallas. Every September, women from many of our congregations help with the annual Oakerhater Celebration and Honor Dance as volunteers that serve an outstanding traditional meal. Christ Church in Tulsa hosted the 2017 Annual Conference and Bishop’s Day on April 28-29. The theme of the conference was “Deep Roots, Growing In God”. Our keynote speaker was The Reverend Susan Snook. Mother Susan recently joined our Diocesan staff as Canon for Church Growth and Development. During the two days of the annual conference, Mother Susan led us on a journey to discover more about the ACTS 8 movement and challenged us to be a movement of women changing the church. A fun and enriching time was had by all as Mother Susan helped us to write our first ECW group collect. The conference was moving and spiritually uplifting. A huge thank you to Father Everett Lees, Father Tom Dahlman and Adrienne Gatewood for leading us in great workshops and robust discussion. ECW has a face book page that is open to all Episcopal Church Women. We encourage everyone to check out the page and invite the women of your church to “join” the page. ECW is currently without a web master, however one of the current projects is to update the website with more current information. We encourage all women to submit pictures, stories and news about their local ministries. We also use the weekly electronic newsletter from our diocese for notice of upcoming events and our calendar can be found on the new Diocesan phone app. Keep track of the movers and shakers in the ECW with our notices that come to your email box from the diocese. This year the Diocesan ECW created a new email account! The email address is [email protected]. Please don’t hesitate to contact us via email anytime! In April of 2018, the Church of the Resurrection in Oklahoma City will host our Annual Conference & Bishop’s Day. The women of Church of the Resurrection are planning a great program and activities for all who will attend. More information will be arriving soon, mark your calendars now to be in Oklahoma City on April 27-28 for a grand time with the ECW of Oklahoma. It's our mission in the upcoming years to bring more women into the fold and introduce them to the opportunities for fellowship and growth that our events provide. We encourage individual churches with organized groups of women or churches just beginning to organize to contact us and we'd love to help in any way we can. Respectfully submitted, Debbie Butcher, ECW President Mark Your Calendars and join us this next year as we celebrate every Episcopal Churchwoman! 2018 February 23-24, ECW Winter Retreat, St. Crispin’s April 27-28, Annual Conference and Bishop’s Day, Church of the Resurrection, OKC July 5-13, Triennial, Austin, Texas October 5-7, ECW Fall Retreat, St. Crispin’s

St. Crispin’s Episcopal Conference Center Nestled in the rolling oak covered hills of Seminole County, St. Crispin’s Episcopal Conference Center is loved by all who visit. A centerpiece of the mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, St. Crispin’s has provided a restful place for individuals and groups for over 50 years. St. Crispin’s Mission is to provide a peaceful space for all guests where they will experience hospitality, nourishment and an opportunity to grow in the grace of God. Under the St. Crispin’s protective umbrella, we host a myriad of programs: Summer Camp, EfM, IONA, Women’s and Men’s retreats, Mt. Biking Clinics, Leadership Oklahoma, etc... are just a few. St. Crispin’s unique environment offers a respite from busy schedules and provides a place free from the pressures of day-to-day business, where creativity can blossom and you can become your best self again. On our 450 unspoiled acres of lakes, hills and forest, you can enjoy spiritual reflection and time with God during an experience never to be forgotten. Working with youth and providing kids with meaningful, fun and life changing experiences has long been a focus of St. Crispin’s. A large number of past and current leaders in the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma credit their experiences at St. Crispin’s with helping to shape their life choices and career paths. Over the past year, St. Crispin’s has served over 900 youth and their group leaders though St. Crispin’s Summer Camp, hosting camps for other churches and organizations, and hosting both Episcopal and Non-Episcopal Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and University groups from across the state. There are a number great things that have happened and are happening at St. Crispin’s in 2017:

• Hosted 2017 Mission Camp • Hosted the 3rd annual Lenten Study for St. Mark’s Seminole & St. Paul’s

Holdenville – Soup & Bread Supper lead by Mother Elizabeth Davis • 14 new Paddle Boards and 15 new Kayaks were added to the waterfront activity

areas. • On-going improvement of the hiking & Mountain Biking trails. • The trails of St. Crispin’s were ranked the number one trail in Oklahoma by

Singletracks Magazine and Best of Oklahoma website. • On September 24th, we hosted the 4th annual St. Crispin’s Day Massacre Mountain

Bike Race. This race was the Championship race in the Tour de Dirt State Mountain Bike Championship series and provided great exposure for our facility and trails by bringing in riders from across Oklahoma and neighboring states.

• On September 30th St. Crispin’s, with the help of Fr. Sean Ekberg and the Leadership Council, hosted its first BBQ Cook-off and silent auction. Money raised was in support of the Camp Office furniture.

• St. Crispin’s hosted the Oklahoma Cyclocross State Championship on Sunday, October 29th, 2017.

• By the end of 2017, St. Crispin’s will have hosted over 130 retreat and camping groups.

Mike, Daniel and I continue to feel blessed to live and work in an environment where we can use our talents. We strive to serve you and provide a setting that will encourage your personal relationships, nourish your body and soul, and nurture your spiritual growth.

Christian Formation – Annual Report - 2017

In preparing my annual report, it is exciting to see just how many good things we offer in this Diocese.

I would be remiss if I didn’t start this report out with EYE17. With almost 1,400 people coming to our Diocese, 82 Dioceses represented, 30+ Bishops, The Presiding Bishop, 22 travel buses for Oklahoma Day, Red Dirt Carnival with games and food trucks, procession from St. Paul’s to the OK Bombing Memorial and an outside worship service, Oklahoma delivered its best. We had over 75 individuals from the Diocese who helped as volunteers – from stuffing our handout bags, to bus wranglers, set up and clean up – everyone played a vital part of our event. There was incredible news coverage throughout the entire time not only by the professionals but from Youth on Twitter, Facebook, and SnapChat. Our Diocesan Youth Representatives baked the Communion Bread that was used at the Opening and Closing Worship Services, and participated in various roles in the worship. We collected toiletries from the youth participants during the opening worship and were able to deliver over 4 trunk loads of toiletries to various ministries in the OKC area. We were also fortunate to have a couple of Dioceses say a few days after EYE17 and do ministry throughout the area. I am so grateful for the great work that was done by many hands and the impact this Diocese had on the Episcopal Church.

Diocesan Convention - Last year, we looked at the theme of “Being Reconciled.” The event was held at St. Christopher’s Church, Midwest City.

On Saturday, the group led worship for convention along with their talents for music and singing.

Safeguarding God’s Children and People – Both of the trainings continue to be a priority. We are fortunate to have several individuals throughout the diocese trained to lead these workshops.

Cultural Awareness – This year, we held two training – one in OKC and one in Tulsa.

New Beginnings –Thanks to St. Augustine’s of Canterbury Episcopal Church, OKC, for serving as our hosting parish for New Beginnings. A special thanks to Sarah and Casey Brown for serving as the adult representatives for New Beginnings. New Beginnings 2018 will be held in Tulsa.

Happening – 2017 Happening was held at OSU Canterbury, Stillwater. Many thanks to Kelsey Brass for leading this ministry and serving as a model for our young adults who have stepped up to be a part of Happening. Happening 2018 will be held at the University of Oklahoma, St. Augustine of Canterbury, Norman, OK. Godly Play Training – The Diocese has continued to support the training of adults for the Godly Play program. We offered two trainings this year – a beginning and advanced training running concurrently at Christ Church, Tulsa. The Diocese has blanket coverage for our congregations who are interested in doing Godly Play or who already have Godly Play.

Mission Camp – This year’s Mission Camp took a new direction as our theme was Beginning Reconciliation. After providing physical labor at St. Crispin’s, the group had workshops with speakers, traveled to Tulsa and learned about the Tulsa Race Riots.

National Cathedral Acolyte Festival – St. John’s, OKC, was in attendance in Washington, DC in October, 2017, for the National Acolyte Festival.

Page 20: The Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma · Iglesia de Brazil teleconference ... • To the resignation of Julio C. Holguin of the Diocese of the ... • Grace Yukon’s revision to their

Summer Camp – After 7 years, this was my first summer that I was not at camp every Sunday for registrations and taking money. Daniel Chapman has moved into this role and I served as back up as needed.

Altered – Altered has a great pattern – a fall “Altered” event with presentations, worship, small group time – and a spring retreat. . A special thanks to Tyler and Angela Davis, along with The Revs. Tim and Kirsten Baer who are overseeing this event.

Education for Ministry – We again hosted a training in August for those who are mentors, or those who would like to become mentors. The reputation for our space, trainings, and location has made us a good fit for those from Kansas, Missouri, Arizona, Texas, and Arkansas. We will offer an additional basic training in February to help cover those who could not get into our fall classes.

ChurchNext – We continue to support 7 congregations in using the ChurchNext materials as a part of their Christian Formation. This resource is available to any church who is interested in using their materials. The Diocese covers the expense of these videos.

Bishop’s Lecture Series – In 2016, we were pleased to have Diana Butler Bass as our speaker for the Bishop’s Lecture Series. We are looking forward to September, 2017 with Rachel Held Evans.

Youth Leader’s Retreat – We offered our 3rd Youth Leader’s retreat in August of this year at St. Crispin’s. Heidi Clark of LeaderResources was our leader. The Diocese has a blanket coverage with LeaderResources so that our churches may use their materials.

Liturgy Festival Training and Eucharist – This year’s event was incredible. With over 100 people in attendance, workshops on Eucharistic Minister and Eucharistic Visitor, along with Lay Readers, Thurifer, Acolytes and others was a huge success. We are already working on plans for next year’s event.

Commission on Ministry

2017 Annual Report

Over the past year members of the Commission continued to work with Bishop Konieczny and Canon Carroll to coordinate our efforts to prepare people for ordained ministry. Various initiatives include:

The Iona School of Formation, based at St. Crispin’s. The Iona School has its roots in the Iona School for Ministry in the Diocese of Texas. At the Iona School of Formation, students gather for monthly weekends during the academic year for three years, preparing for ordination either to the diaconate or as bi-vocational priests. Dr. Steve Orwig is the Academic Dean of the Iona School of Formation.

The Discernment Program, a nine-month program for aspirants (people who are considering the possibility of ordained ministry). Aspirants meet monthly to examine different aspects of the priesthood and the diaconate, in order to explore their call to ministry. Members of the Commission on Ministry often participate in these monthly sessions. The Rev. Joseph Alsay oversees the program, working with the Rev. Deacon Dana Orwig. Beginning in fall 2017, the discernment program will include a spiritual component using the Ignatian method, led by the Rev. Canon Susan Joplin.

The BACM (Bishop’s Advisory Council on Ministry) Weekend, an event in April of each year in which the Commission and the Bishop meet with aspirants who have successfully completed the Discernment Program. The goal of the BACM Weekend is to gain clarity about the aspirants’ perceived call to ordained ministry.

There are currently 30 individuals in the Holy Orders process in the Diocese of Oklahoma:

- 10 Aspirants - 4 Postulants/Candidates for the bi-vocational Priesthood - 7 Postulants/Candidates for full-time Priesthood - 9 Postulants/Candidates for the Diaconate

It is my privilege to work with the members of the Commission on Ministry: The Rev. Deacon John Belzer, Field Griffin, The Rev. Kristi Maulden, the Rev. Deacon Tony Moon, Dr. Steve Orwig, the Rev. Emily Schnabl, the Rev. Clark Shackelford, and the Rev. John Toles.

Faithfully submitted,

The Rev. Irving Cutter Chair, Commission on Ministry

Spiritual Formations for Summer Camp 2017 First This, Then That, Matthew 5:23-24. ABCamp (A Beginners Camp). The Deans for this week were Dick and Cathy Opalka from St. Paul’s Cathedral, OKC.

We used the story of the relationship between King Saul and King David to consider hard relationships, being jealous, and trusting God’s work in friendships. These K-3rd graders made a forgiveness stone that now is a part of one of the trails at St. Crispin’s. Senior High (Rising 10th Grade thru College Freshman)

The Dean was Fr. Tom Dahlman from Emmanuel, Shawnee. The theme, First this then that is from passage in the Sermon on Mount (5:23-24) where

Jesus tells his disciples, "So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift."

The idea was that before we offer our worship to God, we must be living in right relationship. To fully understand that theme, we studied it in the larger context of the Sermon on the Mount, which is the heart of Jesus teaching, important for the teen’s lives as Disciples of Jesus Christ. So we choose parts of the Sermon on the Mount to match the six days of camp, and then spent time tying the pieces of the Sermon on the Mount back to our theme & the larger Sermon on the Mount each day. Typically in the evenings we had time to do some review during evening Devotionals with follow up in their Family Groups. The pieces of the Sermon on the Mount we focused on were: Sun: First This, Then That (5:23-24) Mon: Peacekeepers or Peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) Tues: Getting Past your Past (5:21-24) Wed: Who Do you think you are? Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13-16 & Acts 16) Thurs: Selfie Endgame: Performance vs. Faith (Matthew 5:1-8 & 6:1-6) Fri: Selfie Endgame: La Z Boy. (Matthew 5:10-12).

What will you actually DO because you are a disciple? Sat: Selfies Endgame: Blessed are the... (Matthew 5:3)

God's idea of blessing vs. the world's idea. Pre-Teen, Session I (Rising 4th, 5th , and 6th Graders). Deans were Fr. Everette Lees from Christ Church, Tulsa and Fr. Tim Sean Youmans from Casady School and St. Paul’s Cathedral, OKC.

We presented Jesus’ teaching on forgiveness as being a central driver of following Jesus and the practice of Christianity. Forgiveness is the practice that animates your faith. Your life might look Christian, but if you do not practice forgiveness then it might just be an empty shell of the faith. The kids spent the first night working through some scenarios that happen in the life of a pre-teen where relationships turn bad or get “awkward.” Their Family Groups acted out the scene and how one might respond faithfully as a follower of Jesus in that situation. We then looked at the value of community in the practice of forgiveness. Sometimes we need a good friend who will speak the truth to us about forgiving others and support and walk with us in that effort.

Then we talked about the hardest aspect of forgiveness, that of forgiving enemies. Kids

Page 23: The Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma · Iglesia de Brazil teleconference ... • To the resignation of Julio C. Holguin of the Diocese of the ... • Grace Yukon’s revision to their

wrote a scene from a musical based on Psalm 56, applying the teachings of Jesus to David’s fear of his enemies. The kids performed their musical scenes for the entire camp.

We ended the week by looking at systemic evil (yes, that’s right, with pre-teens) by watching and discussing the first part of Prince of Egypt, the story of Moses coming to his senses about benefitting from the suffering of others. Junior High, Session I (Rising 7th, 8th and 9th Graders). Deans Anne Bowen and Jennifer Sutherland from St. Andrews Stillwater and Fr. Dee Bright from Grace Church Ponca City.

We asked everyone to imagine a puzzle. We start off with all these pieces, not sure where it all goes, but trusting that God already sees our finished masterpiece.

We started with First This; Forgiveness, loving our enemies, reconciliation, Holy Spirit, Lord’s Table. And we ended with Then That; peace, unconditional love, restored right spirit, renewed strength, and communion that bonds us together. So at camp we all started out as these pieces but then we came together and left there with something larger, a community of love and acceptance, a family in Christ’s love. That is who we all are. We have a bond. It is the love and community of St. Crispin’s. All Ages (Rising 4th Graders thru College Freshman). Deans for All Ages Week were Michael Canaday, Sue Ellen Frerichs, and Crystal Knowles, from Emmanuel Shawnee. Their Chaplain was Fr. Art Scrutchins from Holland Hall.

The overall theme of “First this, Then That” was expanded upon in our activities. Day 1, we covered “Building on a solid foundation” from Matthew 7:24-27. The

demonstration used was the jar with rocks, pebbles and sand. Fill your jar with the important things first, your “rocks” (God and family/friends), then with “pebbles” (school, work) and finally with “sand” (material possessions, entertainment.) If you fill your jar with sand first, there is no room for rocks.

Day 2 saw us talking about forgiveness of others. After our talk, we gathered rocks and wrote things that others had done to wrong us on them and put them in a sack. We walked with the sack up to the labyrinth to feel the weight of that burden before we prayed for those who had wronged us and forgave them- leaving the rocks there.

Days 3 and 4 we discussed forgiveness of self, recognizing our own faults on Wednesday and the recognizing God’s forgiveness on Thursday. We wrapped up on Friday with message that “We are not perfect, but we are loved and forgiven.” We specifically discussed how just prior to the Eucharist we confess and are then challenged to seek out and make peace with our neighbors during the passing of the peace before we proceed to sharing the body and blood. We did a small group activity with food coloring added to water symbolizing our sins and faults, and then God’s forgiveness being represented by bleach washing our sins away. The senior high kids did all of this while learning and obtaining lifeguard certification! Pre-Teen, Session I (Rising 4th, 5th , and 6th Graders). Deans were Allen Mann and Josh Jeffreys, and the Chaplain was Mthr. Stephanie Swinnea, all from All Saints Church McAlester. Junior High, Session II (Rising 7th, 8th and 9th Graders) Deans were Sarah Norton Sander and Chris Sander, and the Chaplain was Fr. Tim Baer, all from Grace Church, Yukon.

We started the program "In the Beginning" with God's love for us and God's desire for relationship (Gen 1-2) - that is the "first this" reality of our lives. Of course Human beings often fail to live into God's hopes for us (we sin, we make mistakes, we experience brokenness) - that

Page 24: The Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma · Iglesia de Brazil teleconference ... • To the resignation of Julio C. Holguin of the Diocese of the ... • Grace Yukon’s revision to their

is the "then that" reality of our lives. But God still loves us and forgives us and heals us - this brings us back to "first this". And because of God first loved us we ought to love one another, forgive others, and forgive ourselves.

We focused on how the Sermon on the Mount offers us some guidance on how to live this crazy loving/forgiving life of Jesus. It doesn't make sense to turn the other cheek or forgive, but it is simply the best way to live for us, and those around us.

Throughout the week we paired activities with each lesson. We wrote out a list of our "first this" belovedness and our "then that" sinfulness and then we ripped it in two and burned the sin as the sign of God's forgiveness. We made "stained glass" windows to remind us to shine the light of Christ around us. We used team building challenges to remind us that we are connected to each other and have the support of the Church in our lives. The deans commissioned the youth as they left camp and challenged them to live this crazy Jesus life and to never forget that first this - they are loved.

Why Summer Camp at St. Crispin’s? The impact of camp is not so much faith education. Campers won’t leave reciting the names of the books of the Bible, being able to tell you everything about Anglican church history, or knowing the difference between a chasuble and an alb. The impact of camp is faith formation. Particularly, recent research suggests several lasting impacts of the Christian summer camp experience like ours: increased devotional practices, an increase in “horizontal” faith (seeing faith as relevant to daily life), engagement in church, and self-confidence. The theological depth of camp, it turns out, lies not in doctrine but rather in connecting young people to Christian community, fostering increased devotional practices, promoting faith conversations, and providing experience-based evidence that faith is relevant in everyday life. As the researcher summarized, youth and adolescents participating in camp gain “a desire to be in Christian community, a hunger to learn more, and the assurance that faith makes a difference in their lives.” (Effective Camp Research Project) That is what people mean when they talk about the value of St. Crispin’s Summer Camp. We believe that a life lived in relationship with God and other people will make your life better, because we know that a life in relationship with God and other people has made our lives better. And we want as many people as possible to experience it.

Summer Camp is something the Diocese of Oklahoma gets behind! Camp is a Diocesan ministry in more than one way. It is a part of the larger ecology of faith formation in the Diocese, enhancing the great work that people are doing in their congregations. To that end, the summer camp program is a collaboration. Deans (teams of lay and ordained adults, primarily responsible for the daily religious teachings) and Medical Volunteers (RNs, PAs, MDs) come from around the Diocese to contribute their time and talents for each week-long session. Support for the summer extends to folks who encourage kids to sign up, congregations that provide funds for campers, alumni who share stories of the lasting impact of Camp. The list goes on. The Diocese of Oklahoma loves St. Crispin’s, recognizes the value of the program, and isn’t afraid to show it!

Numbers of Interest This summer our overall attendance grew, as well as our first-time campers. Some of this growth comes from the fact that we were able to grow our Summer Staff and open more cabins. We were able to increase our Summer Staff to 21 total: 19 cabin counselors, 1 Head Counselor, and 1 Assistant Director. For the second summer, we took advantage of a partnership with Camp America and were able to recruit and hire three British counselors. This has been such a worthwhile addition to our program. The individuals have been stellar, it brings a unique dynamic, and certainly a broadened cultural experience for our campers and staff.

Oklahoma Daughters of the King Spring 2017 Diocesan President’s Report, Suzanne Spradling

The Order of the Daughters of the King began on Easter Eve, April 4, 1885, at the Episcopal church of the Holy Sepulcher, now known as the Church of the Resurrection in New York City. The Order was founded by Margaret J. Franklin as the outgrowth of a Bible class and named Daughters of the King. Within seven years, fifty chapters had formed and the National Order of the Daughters of the King was established. By the following year, 1893, the Order’s membership had grown to 8,000 and the first national convention of the Daughters of the King was held. Since that time, chapters have spread throughout the world. Today there are chapters located throughout the United States, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa and India. 2017 is off to a good start with 9 new members installed in several of our chapters. A new chapter, Clare, at St. David’s in Oklahoma City was installed May 20th with 5 new daughters. There are additional potential daughters currently in the discernment process in Chickasha to form a new chapter at St. Luke’s. We have 18 active chapters. 12 chapters are located in the Oklahoma City area, 5 in the Tulsa area and, 1 chapter in the southeastern part of the state (Durant). The total count of DOK members in our state is 242. There are 4 Daughters at Large. Oklahoma has one junior daughters’ chapter with 12 members at St. John’s in Norman. It is encouraging that we are growing, slowly, but growing. Prayers for the increase in the number of dedicated Daughters should be on everyone’s daily prayer list. Prayer is our most powerful tool in serving our Lord. We now have a diocesan chaplain, Deacon Linda Paul, from Trinity Tulsa. We are so pleased and blessed that she answered the call to lead our spiritual development. Each chapter has engaged in service projects around the state, including but not limited to: Bibles given to each new Habitat for Humanity home owner, Food and Shelter for Friends, school supplies for needy elementary students, Busy Bags designed for children ages 3 – 11, personal feminine hygiene and food items for a local food pantry, hospitality packages for new parish members, delivery of altar flowers to parishioners and others in hospitals and nursing homes, coordinating and serving at funeral and other receptions, assisting in prison ministry. Of course daily prayer is a regular obligation, willingly performed. Oklahoma Daughters were well represented at the Province VII Assembly, April 21-23, in Dallas, TX at Church of the Incarnation and at the ECW Diocesan convention, April 29-30, in Tulsa. Last fall’s retreat at St. Crispin’s Episcopal diocesan conference center was well attended. Our spring assembly at St. John’s in Durant, OK was also well attended, increasing attendance over last year’s spring assembly. The chapters are already talking about bringing more daughters for this fall’s annual retreat at St. Crispin’s and spring 2018 assembly. We look forward to gathering and reconnecting in prayer and meditation in God’s beautiful environment. There are several upcoming diocesan and Province VII opportunities for Daughters to attend in 2017 and 2018; October 21-22, Diocesan Retreat at St. Crispin’s and April 18, 2018 Spring Diocesan Assembly at St. Andrew’s in Stillwater, Oklahoma, as well as our annual fall retreat at

St. Crispin’s 2018. I encourage you to attend with your fellow chapter daughters whenever possible. Each of these is an opportunity for us to connect, offer support to one another, and focus our prayer efforts. Formation of a chapter requires the consent of the priest or pastor of the church and a minimum of three women who are communicants in good standing in the Episcopal Church, the Anglican Church, the Lutheran Church (ECLA) or the Roman Catholic Church, and who desire to commit themselves to a life of prayer and service. Membership is granted only after a period of study using our National Study Guide, and followed by a period of discernment and prayer. At the end of this time, with the approval of her priest, the candidate may take life-time vows, binding herself to a Rule of Life which encompasses daily prayer, service and evangelism. After she takes her vows, the Daughter wears the cross of the Order, as an outward sign and constant reminder of the vows she has taken. Because of our vows, our bylaws prohibit us from raising funds. We may only make personal offerings from what we have been blessed to receive. Any priest or group of women in Oklahoma who is interested in forming a chapter is invited to contact the Diocesan President of Daughters of the King. I will be most happy to discuss your ideas, supply an assortment of brochures about Daughters, and assist your church in forming its own chapter of Daughters of the King. 2017 St. Anselm of Canterbury Annual Report Canterbury on the campus of the University of Oklahoma is grounded in the phrase Faith seeking Understanding, the motto of St. Anselm our patron Saint. This means that in all we do we seek to understand the world and those in it better through the lens of our faith first and foremost. This means we seek not to believe as we ought, but as has been revealed to us through scripture, the church and the experience of our relationships and Christian community. This isn’t always easy, especially with a group as diverse as ours. Half of the students of St. Anselm’s have been blessed to be lifelong members of the Diocese of Oklahoma, formed and shaped by the programs, retreats and camps that are an important part of the ministry of this Diocese. This provides an amazing foundation for reaching out to and providing a landing spot for college students who may not feel comfortable in other traditional college communities such as fraternities and sororities or some of the bigger Christian organizations. The other half is composed of students from all over the country, from half a dozen different denominations and faith backgrounds and from all walks of life. Episcopal, ELCA, Missouri Synod Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist, Disciples of Christ, Unitarian, Deaf, Spectrum Disorder, LGBT, Transgender, Single Mother, Conservative, Liberal, Undergrad, Graduate Students... we run the gamut. All are welcome and have found a safe place to love and seek God within the walls of St. Anselm of Canterbury. This year those walls have presented a struggle as we have been under and continue to be under construction. Last year the Diocese committed to spending valuable resources on updating the building to better serve the University and its students, and that process continues, though it will hopefully come to a close near the end of this semester. We are greatly looking forward to the new opportunities this will afford us. This has not slowed us down much, however. Each and every Sunday at 5pm you will hear beautiful organ music and hymnody flowing out of our historic building, and you will hear the prayers and creeds spoken with passion and fervor straight out of our prayer book. On Wednesday evening you will hear the hushed tones of Compline in flickering candlelight. All the moments in between are filled with the laughter and reverent irreverence that young adults excel at. St. Anselm of Canterbury is a blessed community that continues an incredible tradition on the campus of the University of Oklahoma and one we are all proud to serve. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. BOOMER SOONER! Fr. Blake Woods

Canterbury Center Report 2017

Ministry to the Campus

● Wednesday evening Eucharist/dinner. An informal Eucharist (at 5:30pm) held at the Canterbury Center followed by a meal provided by a St Andrew’s parishioner.

● Sunday evening fellowship. We meet at the Canterbury Center 5:30PM to discuss current issues, the role faith plays in our public and private lives, and whatever else comes up. This semester we are reading and discussing the Gospel of Mark. We share a meal provided by a St Andrew’s parishioner before closing our evening with compline, evening prayer, or night prayer. Attendance has averaged 15-19.

● A place to meet and study. At any given moment, chances are we have students hanging out, studying, eating leftovers, chatting with the chaplain about all sorts of things, catching up on their favorite shows on Netflix, playing ping pong or pool, or even taking a nap. Our location is perfect for those with breaks in their daily schedule.

● Hosting meetings. Hospitality is becoming a central focus for our ministry, not just for Episcopalians from across the state and beyond and their friends from other faith backgrounds, but we also are striving to be a welcoming place for the larger campus and Stillwater community. Currently we host the monthly meeting meeting of Stillwater’s PFLAG chapter, a support group for transgender students enrolled at Oklahoma State, and a bible study led by members of Collegiate Outreach Ministries. We occasionally host the women of the Saudi Student association, who like to meet at the Canterbury Center as our glass brick affords them the privacy to meet and let their hair down.

● New Partnership. We have continued our partnership with the Wesley Foundation, the United Methodist ministry on campus. They are in the process of tearing down and rebuilding their facility, so in the meantime they have moved their office next door to us. We are hosting their Sunday morning worship, their monthly women’s worship service, and their PB&J Project ministry.

● Ashes to Go. On Ash Wednesday this year we posted ourselves outside the student union offering a brief service of prayer, psalm readings, and imposition of ashes. 35+ students and faculty took time to share in the service.

● Lights on Stillwater. We have participated the last several years in this annual showcase of local businesses, churches, and campus organizations. It’s a great opportunity to introduce ourselves to new students. This year we handed out koozies with the Canterbury Center logo and koozies from St. Andrew’s. They were a hit!

● Finals week brunch. During finals week the past several semester the Canterbury Center has offered our “You’re almost done with finals brunch!” The turnout has grown and it’s been a great opportunity for our regular students to invite friends.

Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world: Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals. Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start. Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP 829)

The members of the Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools take seriously their role in helping answer this prayer for our children. The OCES supports the work of the Church through its member schools. The commission meets regularly during the academic year to provide mutual cooperation and support among the member schools. The OCES provides assistance to the Bishop and Diocesan Council for insuring that member schools adhere to diocesan standards.

With the closing of St. John’s school in Oklahoma City, the commission is comprised of the following five schools, all meeting the diocesan standards for certification:

Casady (Oklahoma City) Holland Hall (Tulsa) Oak Hall (Ardmore) St. Mary’s (Edmond) and St Dunstan’s (Tulsa)

The OCES is a certifying agency, not an accrediting agency. The OCES strongly encourages all certified schools to seek accreditation and/or to meet the standards of one area, state or national agency to insure safe, nurturing environments for our young people. Every school in the OCES is dedicated to encouraging academics and creativity. We concentrate on the physical, emotional and spiritual development of our children. We urge you to please come visit our wonderful campuses!

The Rev. Arthur Scrutchins, OCES Chair

Advance Report to 2017 Diocesan Convention

Commission on Prison Ministry

We dedicate this Report to the memory of Camille June Gann,

August 2, 1952 – September 15, 2017,

whose dedicated service as a Member of the Commission was an inspiration to us all.

Prison ministries serve as an important means for meeting many of the challenges faced

by all who are affected by Oklahoma’s Correctional System. According to Oklahoma

Department of Corrections (“DOC”) Director, Joe Allbaugh, the number of inmates supervised

by the DOC recently reached a record high of 63,009—including 26,730 incarcerated; 1,569 in

County jails awaiting transfer to the State’s System; and 34,710 under some kind of supervision

by the DOC. Director Allbaugh has also expressed concern about overcrowding and a currently

unrestrained rate of growth in Oklahoma’s inmate population, especially because 94 percent of

inmates return to society at some point, and the State does not currently have the necessary

resources to provide those inmates the help and training they need to change their behavior. 1

Additionally, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has expressed concerns that

“[w]omen are the fastest-growing segment of the prison population, and most of them are

mothers. Oklahoma has the highest rate of incarcerated women in the country. Many of these

women have been victims of serious crimes, themselves—they’ve been physically or sexually

assaulted, or they’ve experienced domestic violence or stalking. . . . [T]hese victims often turn to

illegal action to cope, from drugs to self-medicate or petty theft to provide income—all actions

that lead to our justice system.” 2

The Commission on Prison Ministry leads the Diocese in seeking to meet these

challenges, through the transformational power of Christ’s love and grace, by

+ sponsoring sacramental worshiping communities inside correctional facilities;

+ fostering opportunities for inmates’ spiritual faith development and moral rehabilitation;

+ assisting and mentoring prisoners in developing life skills for successful reentry; and

+ equipping our parishes and missions for ministry with those affected by the justice system.

For many years the Diocese has sponsored St. Patrick’s Community of Prison

Congregations—an outreach ministry that leads ten worshiping communities inside prisons,

and also provides faith-formational and rehabilitative programs inside Oklahoma

correctional facilities. Prison Missioner Rev. Nancy Brock oversees over 30 clergy and lay

prison ministers, who serve as officially-trained and certified volunteers of the Oklahoma

Department of Corrections. Recently, the Commission has stepped up our continuing efforts to

provide an especially effective, cognitive-behavioral rehabilitation program, Moral Reconation

Therapy, to inmates who are preparing for release back into society.

We invite you to consider whether you may be called to assist us in these ministries,

either directly within facilities, or in some other way that provides support from the outside. We

also want to express our sincere thanks to the people of the Diocese of Oklahoma for

continuing to foster and support the very important work of these ministries.

Report to the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma Saint Simeon’s, Tulsa, Oklahoma

September 2017

Saint Simeon’s Episcopal Home in Tulsa continues its tradition of excellent care for over 57 years. We are the preferred home for men and women of all faiths who wish to live their later years in an environment with dignity, individuality and the highest attainable level of independence. Saint Simeon’s offers eight levels of care: Independent Living, four levels of Assisted Living, Memory Care, Health Care, and Skilled Nursing. Saint Simeon’s is home to 170 Residents and employs more than 200 people.

Saint Simeon’s is grateful for the guidance and support of Bishop Ed Konieczny and the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma. Saint Simeon’s is especially grateful for the three-year capital support from the Diocese. This support has already allowed our community to recently replace our Common Room/Chapel floors, ceiling, and windows and to purchase a new natural gas generator.

This year, Saint Simeon’s has started offering specialized Parkinson’s Care. We were approached in 2015 by the Parkinson Foundation of Oklahoma and told that several of their participants had inquired if there was anywhere in Oklahoma that offered Parkinson’s Care. We found out that there was indeed a void in the state for this facet of care. Saint Simeon’s staff has now received new Parkinson’s education and training and added state-of-the-art therapy equipment, designed specifically for

treatment of those with Parkinson’s. Saint Simeon’s is committed to providing a higher quality of life for those in need of specialized Parkinson’s disease care. Saint Simeon’s Parkinson’s Care is endorsed by the American Parkinson Disease Association - Oklahoma Chapter and the Parkinson Foundation of Oklahoma.

Saint Simeon’s continues to enjoy partnerships with local Episcopal churches. Saint Simeon’s staff members are always available to make presentations on topics related to aging at local parishes, and we often host churches for Lunch and Learn presentation at Saint Simeon’s.

This year, the Saint Simeon’s Foundation hosted its 21st Annual Western Days. Western Days 2017: Seasons of Change has a fundraising goal of $500,000 and was attended by more than 700 guests. The September 12, 2017 evening featured live and silent auctions, as well as live musical entertainment.

Page 38: The Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma · Iglesia de Brazil teleconference ... • To the resignation of Julio C. Holguin of the Diocese of the ... • Grace Yukon’s revision to their

Another exciting fundraiser held by the Saint Simeon’s Foundation this year was a Pop-Up Dinner on April 8. Friends of Saint Simeon’s enjoyed a splendid evening at The Polo Grill during which patrons donated $500 to go towards a new medical testing device. In total, the event raised $12,000.

It has been an eventful, successful year for Saint Simeon’s. It is, however, the heart of our mission to provide daily care to frail and elderly individuals. Our success is measured in large part by the responses we receive from Residents and family members. Letters such as the following, written to our President & CEO, Lindsay Hurley Fick, are the most telling feedback we receive as a senior care community:

“Tom’s neurologist told us Saint Simeon’s was the place to go for Parkinson’s care. When Tom moved in, we anticipated he would get good care, and our expectations have been surpassed. Saint Simeon’s is the only place I go that EVERY single person is so nice and friendly. Also I truly believe the people taking care of Tom also care FOR him.” -Nancy Mason

Saint Simeon’s is proud to continue its 57th year as a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma and is grateful for the continued support of the Diocese.

Ardmore Village 2017 has been the year of “The Makeover” and “Additions” for Ardmore Village! With buildings that were built in the 1980’s through 2002 we have been busy adding siding, replacing windows and flooring, painting and more! The plan is that by mid 2018 every building at Ardmore Village will be updated! We are keeping local contractors and our maintenance team busy!

Before After In addition to the makeovers the Diocese added 11.5 acres to the Ardmore Village for possible future development. We also added to our Village complex the Adult Day Services of Southern Oklahoma building which sits on the southwest corner of the Ardmore Village. Adult Day Services closed their doors for business on June 30, 2017. When the .64 acre of land was deeded to ADS from Ardmore Village (Omnia Inc.) a reversion clause was written into the Conjoint Resolution that gave the land (and improvements) back to Omnia Inc. if the property was not being utilized “for the overt improvement of the quality of life for senior or older citizens of Southern Oklahoma.” The hope is that the ADS building can be connected to the Lodge (Assisted Living) to create a Memory/Extended Care wing!

Census remains good – nearly full at all times! Our residents are happy and active. We had a nice visit from Congressman Cole recently.

Holland Hall

September 2017 Dear Diocesan Convention, Holland Hall began our 96th year of continuous operation and our 59th as an Episcopal school serving students in and around the Tulsa area, as well as students from around the world, this August. With both strategic and marketing plans in place, buoyed by truly remarkable progress on our $50 million capital campaign we are delighted to continue to share the Episcopal tradition of an open, inclusive community that values the dignity and worth of every human being in our midst with our students, their families, and the broader Tulsa community. Much is shared in the education and parenting worlds about the importance of instilling the virtues of tenacity and resiliency in our children. Holland Hall could not agree more. These virtues are deeply ingrained in our work with students and families beginning at the earliest ages. To achieve the aspirations outlined in our mission—critical thinking, lifelong learning, forming a strong moral foundation, and developing a deep sense of social responsibility in a college prep curriculum—a child must have a cadre of adults and positive peers present to offer support and encouragement. But what’s often missing from the conversation is the importance of a spiritual relationship—one that looks both inward and outward. Not just Holland Hall, but all Episcopal schools are ably crafted to offer the presence of a spiritual community that fosters transcendent connections in the presence of our relationships as well as through spiritual insight. So how does Holland Hall fulfill that promise, that remarkable opportunity all children should have, in our work with students? Create time and space for spiritual worship and reflection: All students receive religious education that is non-doctrinal and focused on our common humanity among religions while delving into biblical history. Beginning in kindergarten, students also attend weekly chapel services led by our chaplains: Father Art Scrutchins (upper school) and Mr. Justin Boyd (primary and middle school and soon to be ordained in October). We also offer an optional Eucharist service Thursday morning before the day begins. Chapel is a time for quiet worship, for being together in community, and for sharing common stories about how to live a good and meaningful life. It’s also a great place to bless animals during the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Finally, All Saints Chapel serves as an anchor when our community experiences its greatest times of need, including, in some instances, for families who need a peaceful, comforting place for celebrating the life of a loved one who has passed. Create opportunities to connect with one another through nature: With a 162 acre campus in south Tulsa that serves as both laboratory and playground, students as young as three years of age foster their natural curiosity among our forest, trails, and pond. In middle school, our students begin to spend the night on campus and, eventually, leave campus for truly outstanding, transformative experiences at St. Crispin’s Conference Center. (All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students attend these trips, called School Out of Doors.) Finally, in 9th grade they pack up all their food and tents, grab their compasses (okay, GPS devices), and head to the Wichita National Wildlife Refuge just west of Lawton for two nights in the pure wilderness. Freshman

Orientation, now in its 48th year, is the culminating experience that deepens relationships and an “inward look” amidst the backdrop of God’s creation. Create learning environments that foster servant leadership: The test of true, deep learning is in the impact felt years after the experience. Every child strives to better understand themselves through the gifts and talents they hope to develop. Developing those talents best happens while in service to others. Many of our students travel to Ecuador on service learning experiences, to Tanzania to assist at JBFC (Janada L. Batchelor Foundation for Children), a boarding school for orphaned girls, or to local schools and hospitals where they tutor and translate. Holland Hall has also fostered ongoing connections for peer experiences in service and community together with both public and private schools in east and north Tulsa. Many other examples and opportunities abound. Of course, we are fortunate to have faculty from all over the country that value these ideals and the life of the mind. Our faculty give of themselves in and out of the classroom so students can grasp opportunities to study and live at colleges and universities where they can continue to grow into meaningful lives. Returning to our mission, Holland Hall is a college prep school that is able to offer more than just outstanding academics, arts, and athletics. Because of our distinct Episcopal approach and the care we offer for every child, we can offer them growth into lives that matter, lives that are propelled through college. With warmest regards,

J.P. Culley Head of School

Annual Report to the Eightieth Diocesan Convention

September 2017 Since our founding in 1947 by the Rt. Reverend Thomas Casady, Casady School has enjoyed the many benefits and blessings of being an Episcopal Day School. We continue to value and appreciate the support of the Rt. Reverend Dr. Edward J. Konieczny and the Oklahoma Diocese. In part because of this strong bond between the Oklahoma Diocese and the School, we at Casady boldly live our mission into the lives of hundreds of students every year. Our mission calls for us to develop excellence, confidence, and integrity in students and to prepare them with the skills and knowledge that serve as the foundation for success. Without the support of the Diocese and its congregants, the School would not be able to positively impact the lives of so many students. We are grateful to be a part of a community that values the virtues an Episcopal education bestows on our youth. While we expected to see a modest increase in enrollment for the 2017/2018 school year, we opened up the year slightly off our goal and level with our previous year of 900 students. While not at our projection of 914, we feel very good about the enrollment mix and quality of student that is enrolled at the school. This year’s enrollment of 900 for our grades Pre-Kindergarten to grade Twelve is made up of a healthy mix of 446 boys and 454 girls. Of the 900 students, 29% are a minority representation, and we are pleased to have been able to fund financial aid to approximately 24% of the student body. We are very proud of our most recent class of seniors. All 78 will be attending college or experiencing a rich gap year before joining their college-bound classmates. This class averaged a 27 on the ACT and a 1411 on the SAT with an average GPA of 3.61 and an overall college acceptance percentage of 83%. As I said last year, what makes our school special is the richness of our programs; all our students do well. From top to bottom, in everything they have done, this class graduates with depth in its academic achievements. The top quartile of the class of 2017 earned a 31 on the ACT, the second quartile a 28, the third quartile a 26, and the fourth quartile a 24. In fact over 40% of the class earned higher than a 30 on the ACT! As you can see, our students had plenty of options as they looked to choose the college or university that was, for them, the best fit. This year’s class was accepted to 22 Most Competitive Colleges (5 – 33% admit Rates) based on 2017 Barron’s Profile, 27 Highly Competitive Colleges (25-50% admit rate), 38 Very Competitive Colleges (33-75% admit rates), and 22 Competitive Colleges (75-85% admit rate). Schools chosen include Stanford, Washington University – St. Louis, Duke, Vanderbilt, Barnard College, Middlebury College, Northwestern University, Tufts, USC, University of Chicago, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, University of Texas and many more colleges that are great fits for each child. We had 6 National Merit Finalists, 8 intercollegiate athletes, 15 go to Honors Colleges, 78% received some form of scholarship, and 62% of this year’s class is going to a school out of State.

As you can see, Casady School and the Oklahoma Episcopal Diocese have again developed a graduating class of confident, well-balanced young men and women who understand that they belong to something greater than themselves. We are grateful to the Diocese and the Bishop for their continued support of the School’s mission. Another class of seniors always follows closely behind the last; therefore, we continue to grow our reserve for deferred maintenance so that our students tomorrow will be afforded the same quality of educational space as our students experience today. Additionally, we continue to increase the amount of money we allocate for faculty development to ensure that not only the physical plant but also the caliber of teaching remains current and relevant in living out our mission and vision. We believe strongly that it is our people that make our mission come alive, and hiring great people makes the difference between being good and being great. We are excited to share with you the biographies (that follow) of the ten new faculty members (3 newly created positions), five administrative positions, three operations positions, and two head coaches for the 2017/18 school year. Of the ten new faculty members, five hold a master’s degree and five hold a bachelor’s degree, and our new teachers come from as far away as California and New York, as well as from right here in our own backyard of Oklahoma. Finally, we continue to work on our master campus plan. We want to maintain our facilities so that all children who go through the buildings have a similar experience – one of a safe and nurturing environment and not one in need of repair. We continue to work a plan that, over the next five years, projects us to be in position to remodel a significant number of the buildings that call for renovations. Faithfully,

Nathan L. Sheldon Head of School

Oak Hall Episcopal School Collect

O Eternal God, bless our school, Oak Hall, our students, our teachers, our parents, our board, and the Diocese of Oklahoma.

May our school be a center for sound learning, new discovery, and a place where your love and care abide.

Guide us in our teaching, in our learning, and in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Oak Hall Episcopal School (OHES) strives every day to make its mission of being “dedicated to the intellectual, creative, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth of each student to his or her potential within a Christian environment in the Episcopal tradition” a reality. As an Episcopal school, we are called to offer radical hospitality – to be an open and welcoming community, without the overt, or covert, agenda to proselytize. To that end, we at OHES have welcomed and accepted students and their families from various Christian denominations, as well as those of different faith traditions, and those of no religious belief. In 2016-2017 just 12% of students and 17% of the faculty and staff identified as Episcopalian. In reality, this has meant that we have had to work hard to constantly maintain a consensus of sensitivity around what it means to be an Episcopal school, including having daily Chapel and weekly Godly Play or Christian Education classes, and how we are to live in community with each other. Founded in 1977, 2016-2017 marked the School’s 39th anniversary. We finished the year with 127 students. Through the generosity of the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, the Southern Oklahoma Memorial Foundation, and donations from a small number of individuals, the School was pleased to support 20% of students through our needs-based financial aid program. Although we are still feeling the bite of a slow economy, and our enrollment is down, great things continue to happen in and out of the classrooms. Some highlights of 2016-2017 include: • Being named a Great Expectations “Model” School for the 11th consecutive year; • Fifth Grader Antonio Libarnes, becoming State Champion of the Oklahoma National Geographic Bee; • Robotics being introduced to our Middle School students. This included hosting and participating in the Noble Academy’s Botball Challenge; • The workshop presentation proposal by two teachers (Mrs. Melanie Williams and Mrs. Sara Black) being accepted and included in the upcoming Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools’ Biennial Conference; • Opening our doors to host outside activities such as the the Boy Scouts, Girls on the Run, Samuel Roberts

Noble Foundation and Michelin employee sports, and the Ardmore Corporate Fitness Challenge; and, • Entering a sports cooperative with Dickson ISD. Through the auspices of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA), this agreement allows our Middle School students to play on any Dickson Middle School sports team. Students have already taken advantage of this opportunity by participating in cross country, football, and softball. As part of this reciprocal arrangement, Dickson elementary students will be able to train for cross country at OHES. In addition, during the last school year, the Board of Trustees made the decision to engage a consultant to help the School review and develop our enrollment management and marketing strategies. While we have begun implementing recommendations, and will continue to do so through the new school year, the excellent news was that the School received a 94% approval rating from our parents! Anyone interested in learning more about Oak Hall Episcopal School and the educational experience we provide to children in Early Childhood 3 through the Eighth Grade, are invited to peruse our website (www.oakhallschool.com), join our Facebook page, or come by and take a tour. With a 94% parent satisfaction result, we must be doing something right! Respectfully submitted, Ken Willy Headmaster

St. Mary’s Episcopal School Edmond, Oklahoma

St. Mary’s Episcopal School, established in 1977 as a parish day school of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, serves as an outreach ministry of the church educating young children ages three through grade five. Our mission calls us to provide quality academic programs in a Christian environment fostering respect for faith, family, others and self. St. Mary’s attracts families because of the educational environment, Christian values, and a culture of respect that fosters learning. Christian principles, moral values, and responsibility skills are instilled and reinforced through weekly chapel services and extended throughout the school program. The Rev. Dr. Mark Story servers as our school chaplain and religious advisor. We are fortunate to have a strong faculty who are passionate about education and dedicated to our school. St. Mary’s Episcopal School is the only school in Edmond that offers stimulating enrichment experiences in the areas of science, music, health and wellness, fine arts, Spanish, technology skills, and a before and after school program for children of all levels. Educating our students can take place in our beautiful facility and also on our 51 acre campus. We are committed to developing students who have compassionate hearts, to serve God and others. Our service-learning component is laying the foundation for civic participation skills and instilling the importance of being responsible citizens. St. Mary’s Episcopal School is an accredited and active member of the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools. The Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools Executive Board, upon recommendation of the Standards Committee, granted St. Mary’s Episcopal School full accreditation through June 30, 2024. St. Mary’s Episcopal School is truly blessed to be able to continue providing the highest quality educational experience to our students in a nurturing, Christian environment. We value our relationship with the diocese through membership in the Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools. Submitted by: Pamela Dockter, Head of School.

2017 Annual Report to Convention St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Preschool

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Preschool is a developmental program that strives to provide activities and learning experiences to build each child’s self-esteem while stimulating cognitive development and socialization skills. We endeavor to provide each child with a loving, accepting environment while increasing skills according to his/her development. We believe that a positive classroom environment is essential for reaching optimal development. We want the children to feel self-confident as well as capable of meeting new challenges, both social and educational. Classroom activities are varied to provide a balance between free-choice and teacher-directed activities, with a large variety of options that meet needs in all developmental areas – large/fine motor, cognitive, social, emotional, and self-help skills. Our teachers seek to create a thought-provoking, motivating curriculum that centers on developing the whole child. Beginning our 39th school year with 62 students, ages 3 months to 5 years, enrolled, our enrollment is lower than this time last year but steadily increasing. St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Preschool is a member of Oklahoma Commission of Episcopal Schools and National Association of Episcopal Schools. We strive to maintain a community in which all people, children and adults alike, are respected and supported as unique and valuable individuals. The Church provides the Judeo-Christian heritage which underlies the preschool’s value system. We follow the guidelines of the Episcopal Church in making decisions about religious views and personal values. The parish of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church is a huge support to our preschool. From donations to participation in preschool fundraisers, the parish is such a blessing to our school. This year the preschool will be partnering with the church for the 3nd Annual Trunk or Treat outreach. Fundraisers like these would not be as successful without the support and help of the wonderful parish members. Lacey Adams Director - St. Dunstan's Preschool
