Pastor’s Le er for the Epiphany of the Lord—January 2-3

In the ancient basilica church in Ravenna, Italy, built in the 400s, there is a beau ful mosaic of the three Magi, bearing the names Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar. One of the first things that you will no ce is that each of the three represent different age groups. All three are wearing Phrygian caps, which at the me that these mosaics were produced, iden fies the wearers as followers of the Persian god, Mithra. So these Magi were thought to be from the Persian Empire, perhaps Babylon. They were outsiders, foreigners, pa-gans.

And that is exactly how Ma hew in his Gospel wants us to see them, as Gen les, as outsiders, perhaps even as charlatans, as o en such foreign Magi from the East were seen to be. The Evangelist does not give us their names, nor does he even say that there were three, but he marks them as outside of the people of Israel. These Gen les though are loved by God too; he even sends a miraculous star to guide them to the humble place of Jesus’ birth, where they present gi s to the newborn king, gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Gold symbolizes Jesus’ royalty as the descendent of King David, and frankincense - the fabled incense of the East - represents Jesus as the great high priest who offers himself to God on our behalf. Myrrh, used to embalm the dead, predicts that Jesus will die on the cross. As the final prophet, Jesus speaks the truth of God and pays the price for it, thus gaining salva on for us! All of that theology packed into twelve short verses. What a masterful theologian Ma hew is! Happy Epiphany!

    Have a great week!

    Fr. Buddy
