could eliminate nearly 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. It is due to be delivered to Norled in the 4th quarter of 2014 and start operations in January 2015. In addition to the environmental benefits, the ferry’s operational and maintenance costs will be lower than those of a conven-tional ferry. The sum of the vessel’s technical features made it the obvious winner of the Ship of the Year 2014 award, Skipsrevyen said.Norled will operate the world’s first bat-tery-driven ferry on the Lavik-Oppedal route in south-west Norway. The 80m-long vessel will be able to carry 120 cars and 360 passengers across the Sognefjord. It will run 34 times each day, with a crossing time of 20 minutes. Time at port is ten minutes, during which the 1-MWh lithium-polymer

battery pack on board will be fully charged. This amount of electric power delivered in such a short time is far beyond the capacity of the electrical grid serving the villages of Lavik and Oppedal. The solution is to in-stall battery buffers at both ports that can be continuously charged from the grid with 250 kW, then rapidly provide a quick dump to the ferry’s batteries. For one crossing un-der normal conditions operating at a speed of 10 knots, battery power of only 150 to 200 kWh is needed, thus providing a wide safety margin. The electrically powered ferry was devel-oped for submission to a competition or-ganised by Norway’s Ministry of Transport. As a reward for winning the competition, Norled has been granted the licence to op-erate the route until 2025.

SMM DAILY NEWS SHIP OF THE YEAR

2 SMM Daily News | 11 September 2014 | No 3

SMM on Tuesday, the first official day of the trade fair, was dedicated to maritime environmental protection as gmec, the global maritime environmental congress, took place under the motto “Setting the Green Course”. The congress programme was highly topical and studded with ex-perts. More than 120 participants dis-cussed the latest developments and trends towards a more sustainable ship-ping and offshore industry.

The keynote address was given by Com-mander Ryan Allain, chief of the environ-mental standards division at the US Coast Guard. The conference itself began with a round-table discussion on “Sustainable Shipping in 2030”, moderated by news anchor Matt Frei of ITN Channel 4. The question was: What does sustainable shipping mean in practice? The panel dis-cussed the aims of the sustainable shipping movement, and what the world can expect from a sustainable commercial shipping fleet come the year 2030. Among the speakers was Signe Bruun Jensen, head of sustainability at Denmark’s Maersk Line, the world’s leading container shipping company. Interesting insights were also given by Günter Eiermann, technical di-rector of Bomin Linde, a Hamburg-based

provider of liquefied natural gas as a fuel for the marine market. The first expert panel examined the overarching topic of “Environmental Compliance”. The discussion mainly revolved around retrofit-ting options and regulations on emissions to air and sea. Debra DiCianna, senior en-vironmental solutions consultant at the classification society American Bureau of Shipping, gave an overview on ballast water management, while Donnacha O’Driscoll, senior vice president of technical operations at the cruise shipping company Carnival

UK, informed about best-practice projects in air abatement technology. The second panel was titled “Operating Ef-ficiency”. The speakers detailed the efficien-cy gains to be made, including everything from technical and mechanical means to operational adjustments, while considering the commercial factors and market funda-mentals that directly affect the efficacy of efficiency measures – and how those influ-ences might change in the future. Speakers included Aida Welker, director of mari-time industries at Kf W IPEX-Bank, who spoke about eco-ships and the changes and challenges for shipowners and financiers. Richard Bowcutt, senior vice president for business development and marketing at Rolls-Royce, lectured on integrated ship systems for efficiency and the environment. This year for the first time, gmec was not spread across two days but compressed into one. “We are pleased to say that the gmec conference on SMM Environmen-tal Protection Day was a full success,” said Bernd Aufderheide, CEO and president of Hamburg Messe und Congress. “This was truly a top-level event. The fact that it went down so well is an indication that the new SMM theme-day concept with one-day conferences and top-flight experts is the right approach.”

SMM DAILY NEWS GMEC – GLOBAL MARITIME ENVIRONMENTAL CONGRESS

Making shipyards fit for the futureThe SMM Daily News asked the managing director of Hamburg-based Lean Ma-ritime, Theo Herzog-Zikas, and Jean-Yves Jaouen, senior vice president of operations at the STX France shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, for their expert insight into the implementation of “lean“ processes at shipyards.

Mr Herzog-Zikas, you help shipyards and suppliers to in-crease their competitiveness. A provocative question: In what areas do you see the companies’ biggest deficiencies?Herzog-Zikas: To reduce cost disadvantages in Europe, op-erational excellence, above all,

must have priority together with technological leader-ship. We see great potential to increase productivity, and in process management along the value chain. This involves synchronising highly complex projects with a large num-ber of subcontractors, which must be coordinated in a very short construction time. The best example is cruise ship construction here at the STX France yard in Saint-Nazaire. As we’re now seeing in Japan, Asian shipyards apparently still have a lot of trouble with this complexity.

Mr Jaouen, STX France has managed to emerge stronger

from its difficult situation du-ring the crisis. What are your secrets to success?Jaouen: During the crisis we reacted with a wide-ranging im-provement programme. Along

with diversification of our port-folio and smart investments, the most important compo-nents were a slimming down of our structures and the associat-ed change in company culture.

SMM DAILY NEWS LEAN MANAGEMENT

Could you be more specific?Jaouen: To continue with the example of cruise ship con-struction, customers’ require-ments with regard to con-struction times and outfitting increase with each new project. The price level of new projects is very low, however. We react-ed to this and, with the help of consultants, examined our previous way of working. We’ve continually streamlined all pro-cesses and increased our pro-ductivity significantly. In short, we’ve appreciably improved the “operational excellence” men-tioned earlier. As a result, we’ve considerably increased our competitiveness.

Could you quantify the increase in productivity?Jaouen: We’ve been able to achieve productivity gains in the high double figures, particularly in the complex construction of cruise ships’ interiors. We did this by systematically introducing

a takt time and synchroning the work of subcontractors, among other things. But we’ve also markedly raised potentials in constructional steelwork as well as in indirect areas of our ship-yard such as engineering.

Sounds good!Herzog-Zikas: It may sound simple, but the employees have to completely rethink their way of doing things. The change be-gins in the mind. We help them to break up accustomed struc-tures. The goal is to make the entire company fit for future success.Jaouen: I’d like to pass on a few very important experiences. The slimming-down process is applicable to all areas of the shipyard. They discover reserves that they didn’t even know be-fore. The results of this process are sometimes hard for everyone involved, and uncomfortable de-cisions must be taken, but that’s the very point of this process.

MAN B&W 8L70ME-GI dual-fuel, low-speed engine

MAN EcoCam retrofit de-livers low-load optimisation of low-speed, mechanical en-gines with single turbocharg-ers, bringing significant fuel savings of 2 to 5 g/kW. Other, new initiatives in-clude the two-stroke, dual- fuel ME-GI engine, which can operate on gas or HFO, depending on price and availability. The ME-GI can burn LNG, methane or ethane, while its ME-LGI liquid-gas equivalent burns

fuels such as methanol, LPG and ethanol. This favouring of sulphur-free fuels boosts any vessel’s emissions profile, as do the secondary meas-ures MAN Diesel & Turbo offers, such as selective cata-lytic reduction for both two- and four-stroke engines and exhaust gas recirculation for two-stroke engines, helping to meet Tier III standards.

Raytheon Anschütz launches new navigation radar The German navigation sys-tem manufacturer Raytheon Anschütz, based in Kiel, has of-ficially launched its NautoScan NX network radar transceivers at SMM.

The new radar generates raw ra-dar video that is distributed via gigabit LAN without any ana-logue losses. This, according to the company, enables optimised performance with high-fidelity radar data processing through the individual end-user applica-tions on the bridge.Axel Schaab, product management leader at Raytheon Anschütz, said: “We’ve listened to the market and heard the demand for newly developed, state-of-the-art navigational radar. Consequently, we leveraged our experience and extensive radar knowledge and started the in-house development of a

very competitive and modern radar. The new radar is based on network technology and has undergone a complete redesign electronically and mechani-cally to combine great perfor-mance with high reliability.”

Automatic performance monitoring An unlimited number of work-stations and applications can be linked to the LAN to receive the radar video. According to Raytheon, a star-based network approach offers the highest scalability and flexibility for a wide range of applications and requirements without the need for special cabling or conversion hardware. As part of the com-plete system redesign, critical parts such as the drive unit have been optimised to provide cus-tomers with maintenance-free operation and an extended life.

Features such as automatic per-formance monitoring or a Mag-netron sleep mode for longer maintenance intervals are now integrated in the system. According to Raytheon, instal-lation and maintenance access have been improved through a new pedestal design. Simplified

assembly and configuration, as well as use of standard Ether-net, will lower installation ef-forts; built-in test features are available for advanced service diagnostics and optimised ser-vice performance. Raytheon at SMM: Hall B6 / Stand 304

SMM DAILY NEWS NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

Innovative 2-in-1 boiler solution from SaackeSaacke Marine Systems, ba-sed in Bremen, is presenting a market innovation at SMM: the CMB-VF-LONOX. If one or two auxiliary boilers, as well as an exhaust gas or a composite boiler, are usually installed to cover the varying demand for steam on ships, the CMB-VF-LONOX does away with the need for an entire auxiliary boiler system.

The Saacke solution also com-bines straightforward imple-mentation and ease of use with a long life cycle and energy-ef-ficient operation. The com-pact, vertical combination-type boiler bundles a multitude of demands that shipyards and shipping companies place on to-day’s onboard equipment. It was specifically developed for ships

with multi-boiler plants such as chemical tankers, LNG carriers and passenger ships. While conventional verti-cal combination-type boil-ers achieve a maximum fired steam output of about 6t/h, the CMB-VF-LONOX attains up to 13t/h, or even 18t/h for the CMB-VF. Since the boiler is always heated up and ready for operation, it can immedi-ately supply small as well as large quantities of steam on demand. The boiler is fired by a Saacke rotary cup burner. A control range of up to 1:25 can be achieved. The fully au-tomatic boiler control simpli-fies the operation of the steam generation plant. If an auxiliary boiler is in place in addition to the CMB-VF-LONOX – such as on larger tankers in which

two auxiliary boilers are other-wise required – the CMB-VF- LONOX and the auxiliary boiler can be operated in a master-slave mode. Apart from using the heat from the main engine exhaust gas, the auxil-iary diesel exhaust gases can

also be integrated. The boiler system is also compatible with dual-fuel applications and can be delivered with flue gas re-circulation for emissions in the ultra-low NOx range if desired.Saacke at SMM: Hall A3 / Stand 413

All sides will benefit from SMM Recruiting DayCompanies need experts, and qualified applicants are looking for attractive emplo-yment opportunities. Tomor-row, September 12th, SMM’s designated Recruiting Day will bring together the de-mand and supply sides of the maritime labour market. This job exchange and professio-nal training platform is an in-vitation to human resources executives from hiring com-panies and interested appli-cants to meet up.

A company’s ability to compete depends largely on its employee base. To remain visible, success-ful and attractive in the market-place, employers must invest in the development of their em-ployees and hire highly quali-fied new staff. The maritime in-dustry is no exception. To give an example: According to the most recent survey conducted by the German Shipbuilding and Ocean Industries Associa-tion (VSM), the German mar-itime industry needs about 140

new shipbuilding engineers per year. However, Germany’s six maritime engineering schools produce no more than 90 grad-uates annually. The ageing pop-ulation is another challenge for this industry.“This year for the first time, SMM will include a Re-cruiting Day,” said Bernd Aufderheide, president and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH.

Ideal setting to speak with skilled professionalsAt the “Maritime Career Mar-ket”, leading companies and institutes will find an ideal set-ting to reach out and speak with skilled professionals and young applicants face-to-face.“The shipbuilding and the offshore supply industries are in need of committed, high-ly qualified staff. The SMM Recruiting Day will provide an ideal backdrop for a fruit-ful dialogue with students and graduates,” said Jörg Mutschler, managing director

of the northern branch of the German Engineering Associa-tion (VDMA), adding that it was never too early to begin interacting. “The concurrent ThinkING campaign (pro-moting careers in engineer-ing) is an excellent opportuni-ty to engage secondary school students and open their minds for a career in fascinating tech-nologies,” he said.

An optimal forumAmong the many companies represented at the Hamburg fair are industry giants such as SKF Blohm + Voss Industries and MAN.“As an innovative company, we’re looking for well-trained, committed, highly motivated professionals from the ship-building and shipping fields who are willing to contribute to the future success of MDT,” said Jürgen Zahnweh, head of hu-man resources for the engines and power division at MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MDT).His ongoing search for young candidates who fit the bill will continue at SMM. Another company that will be looking for qualified young staff at the Hamburg fair is Lürssen Werft shipyard.“Our participation in Recruit-ing Day activities at this year’s

SMM is in line with our strat-egy to attract highly qualified young professionals to our shipbuilding company at an early time, and integrate them into our teams,” said Friedrich Lürssen, managing partner of Fr. Lürssen Werft GmbH & Co KG, which has set up a ma-jor booth at SMM. “Recruit-ing Day is an optimal platform for our recruiting efforts as it presents us with the unique opportunity to speak directly and openly with potential ap-plicants and show them who we really are: a modern, glob-ally renowned, family-owned company offering excellent professional prospects to young, highly motivated peo-ple who share our passion for building ships of singular qual-ity and beauty.”

“Good shipbuilders are always in demand”At SMM, educational institutes such as universities and tech-nical academies will showcase their degree and advanced train-ing programmes and options that can help employers and their employees be prepared for the challenges of the future.“Good shipbuilders are always in demand. Right now the in-dustry is especially interested in highly qualified young experts

with specialised knowledge. This demand will increase over the coming years,” said Wolf-gang Fricke, a professor at Ham-burg-Harburg Technical Univer-sity’s Institute for Ship Design and Structural Integrity.Fricke said the profession of shipbuilder was experiencing significant change. As more in-novative technical components are introduced and the market increasingly focuses on special-ised ships, the qualification pro-files required today differ vastly from those of past years. Univer-sities and academies have adjust-ed to these new requirements. SMM’s Recruiting Day should be a great platform for university

and secondary school students to get in touch with human re-sources managers from hiring companies, Fricke remarked.“Compared with a conventional job interview, the ‘Maritime Ca-reer Market’ provides both sides with a relaxed setting, allowing for a more extensive exchange of views,” he said.Multi-faceted and innovative, the maritime industry is one of Germany’s key technology sectors. At SMM, students of all levels will be able to gain an impression of this fascinating world and the professional ca-reer options it offers. Admission will be free for students on Sep-tember 12th.

Alfa Laval paved way for today’s environmental solutionsAt this year’s SMM, Alfa Laval is showcasing its portfolio’s most recent developments, which include the soon-to-be-launched PureSOx 2.0. It com-prises compliant solutions for the broadest range of envi-ronmental legislation.

When the “Pure Thinking” idea was introduced as a con-cept in 2004, Alfa Laval solu-tions were already associated with high efficiency and the reduction of waste. As the name suggests, Pure Thinking began as a strong vision, with only a handful of finalised products and much that was still in the idea stage. PureBallast, for example, had

not yet been named and was just setting out on its first trials at sea. But the formulation of a goal and a systematic approach would prove to be the key to addressing legislative demands. Ten years later, with US ballast water regulations already in place and emission control ar-eas (ECAs) soon entering into force, Alfa Laval’s environmen-tal portfolio is a concrete offer-ing prepared for an increasingly concrete reality.

Meeting the emission challengeLike energy efficiency, which has both environmental and monetary aspects, today’s most pressing environmental

issue is one heavily influenced by fuel costs. With ECAs for SOx appearing in January 2015, and ECAs for NOx to

follow in 2016, the fuel costs associated with emission com-pliance are on every operator’s mind. Once again, competi-

Expertise in underwater and ship acoustics DW-ShipConsult is a special-ist in underwater acoustics. DW-ShipConsult aims to show SMM visitors the tre-mendous cost-reduction po-tential of early and profes-sional consideration of the acoustical interdependencies in a newbuilding project.

With the IMO Code MSC 337 becoming effective this year, interest in efficient noise and vibration avoidance measures is increasing as all newbuild-ings over 1,600gt must meet mandatory noise level limits.

In the field of underwater acoustics, DW-ShipConsult will show its latest measure-ment systems, which are cur-rently operating in the North Sea.Interested visitors may also get insight into the noise mapping concept developed for Euro-pean waters. Additionally, the international consulting com-pany will demonstrate its ex-pertise in solving existing noise and vibration problems.

sult

tive solutions can be found in the Pure Thinking port-folio, where PureVent, Alfa Laval’s unique air separator for cleaning crankcase gas, is now joined by PureSOx and PureNOx.Launched in 2012, the PureSOx scrubber system allows vessels to meet SOx limits while continuing to use HFO, rather than switching to a more expensive, low-sul-phur fuel. Having quickly established itself as an SOx abatement leader, the system is used extensively as a main engine scrubber and can be found in installations as large as 28 MW. “PureSOx is proven at sea and has more reference installations than any other single SOx scrubber technol-ogy,” said Peter Leifland, pres-ident of the Marine & Diesel Division “Whereas other sup-pliers have developed or even purchased multiple scrubber technologies, Alfa Laval has

continuously optimised the original PureSOx platform, which draws on our more than 40 years of marine scrub-ber experience and our sepa-ration expertise for washwater cleaning.”

New advances at SMMDevelopment continues with-in the Pure Thinking portfo-lio, in emission control and beyond. This year’s SMM sees the unveiling of PureSOx 2.0, a more compact system with new options and increased flexibility. “With SOx limits just around the corner in 2015, Alfa Laval is proud to be pre-senting an even more compet-itive PureSOx scrubber at this year’s SMM,” Leifland said. “Pure Thinking will continue, and as time goes on, the think-ing will be even more closely linked with action.”

New-generation SPMTs on showGermany’s Goldhofer AG is presenting its innovative transport equipment for the heavy-haulage industry – ideally suited for transporting ships or ship sections and off-shore plants – at SMM.

Goldhofer’s PST/ES-E self-propelled heavy-duty module transporters (SPMTs) with hydrostatic drive and electronic multi- way steering are now a standard item in the maritime industry worldwide, the Mem-mingen-based company says. With a vehicle width of 2,430mm, the PST/ES-E modules can be transported from one job to another on a cost-effective basis using normal flatbeds or flatracks.“We’ll be informing visitors in Hamburg about the world firsts for the SPMT market that we presented only a few weeks ago at our Innovation Days in Memmingen. Our revo-lutionary ideas are predestined for maritime operations,” said Horst Häfele, sales director for heavy-duty modules at Goldhofer. The company’s latest innovation in the further development of modular transporters is a hy-

draulically adjustable track width for an up to 25 per cent increase in lateral stability.Standard truck tyres reduce running costsGoldhofer’s PST/ES-E (385) series is specially designed for handling ultra-heavy loads. With an axle load of up to 60 tonnes, these self-pro-pelled modules offer an optimum payload/axle load ratio – using standard truck tyres. All of Goldhofer’s new self-propelled modules can be fitted with standard tyres in 285mm (19.5 inch), 315mm (22.5 inch) and 385mm (22.5 inch) widths. In addition, tyre wear benefits significantly from a +/-135° steering angle. All that greatly reduces running costs.

Choice of four PowerPacks for drive unitsFor the drive units, Goldhofer’s SPMTs come with a choice of four PowerPacks with a rated output of 150, 207, 360 and 390 kW. Thanks to their newly developed drive systems, the vehicles in the SPMT-2.0 generation achieve an up to 100 per cent improvement in work-ing speed and a 27.5 per cent increase in tractive force compared with conventional SPMTs, according to the company.

“These are powerful arguments. The use of Goldhofer modules of the latest genera-tion greatly reduces transshipment times in the ports and offers enormous potential for savings in overall costs. For the curious, the details of the calculations will be revealed at our stand on the ground floor of Hall B2,” Häfele said.Goldhofer at SMM: Hall B2 / Stand 101

Efficient tools for shippingGrinding, brushing and scrubbing work in shipbuilding and shipping entails heavy physical strain. Efficient work is therefore possible only with ergonomic, powerful tools.

Under this premise, Hamburg-based Holger Clasen GmbH & Co KG (HC) is presenting the MAG-9000 brushing tool, powerful an-gle grinders and various tools for corrosion protection – rust removal machines and needle scalers, for example – at SMM 2014.“All of our surface-treatment products are equipped with a compressed air drive, which makes them considerably lighter than similar tools with an electrical drive,” said Lennart Clasen, managing director of Holger Clasen. An additional advantage is the high level of safety in the case of overloading, as compressed air drives do not overheat like electric tools, which can then be permanently damaged. The compact MAG-9000 brushing tool developed by Holger Clasen specifically

for corrosion protection work in inacces-sible locations is on exhibit at its trade fair stand. At 600 W and 9,000rpm, the device is very powerful, and its high-quality de-sign guarantees a high level of availability and short waiting times. With its stand-ardised M14 spindle, the device is com-patible with standard brushes from all established manufacturers. So users can

continue to use brushes that are already available.

Low-vibration angle grindersThe HC stand will also show various angle grinders in the power range from nearly 600 to 2,100 W. All of the tools have a very low vibration level, thus allowing highly er-gonomic, low-fatigue work.

Latest energy-efficient HVAC & Rsystems and productsHeinen & Hopman is pre-senting cost- and energy-saving solutions for HVAC installations at SMM 2014, including the Tur-bocor TT-300 compressor.

The main emphasis lies on recycling cooling water and energy. Cooling water from diesel engines can be used for heating, and energy in the exhaust air can be reused for pre-heating, pre-cooling, and humidifying fresh air coming in from outside. The Turbocor compressor, which runs without oil or an oil pump, is one of Heinen & Hopman’s newly developed

products. Its shaft hangs in a magnetic field, eliminating

mechanical wear and tear. According to the manufac-

turer, this type of compressor is more energy-efficient, has lower power consumption, and is maintenance-free. Moreover, fully tested and pre-assembled chillers, spe-cially designed and manu-factured as an assembly kit, are available for refitting purposes. In order to install the chiller on board, it is not necessary to dismantle other machinery or piping, and no holes are required in deck or bulkheads, Heinen & Hop-man said.

Wärtsilä receives AIP certificate for its new LNGPac system The new Wärtsilä LNGPac, the upgraded version of the company‘s successful LNG fuel-handling system, has been granted an AIP (approval in principle) certificate from the classification society DNV GL. The certificate was presented at the Wärtsilä stand (305) in Hall A4 at SMM.

The AIP certificate covers Wärt-silä’s innovative improvements to the original LNGPac. The new solution has removed the heat-ing media skid and its pumps, and includes an improvement to the Wärtsilä Cold Recovery solution. The certificate is based on technical material and safety analyses, and includes docu-mentation concerning normal

operation of the system and a presentation of risk scenarios. In effect it means that the system is judged to be safe and reliable and that it will be approved by classes in actual projects.“This is an important step in making this new feature of the Wärtsilä LNGPac available to the marine market, and repre-sents an expected verification of the technical aspects that have gone into the development of this system,” said Jaakko Eskola, senior executive vice president and president of Ship Power at Wärtsilä Corporation.“The presentation of this ap-proval in principle marks anoth-er chapter in a longstanding and successful cooperation between Wärtsilä and DNV GL. The de-

velopment of the first LNGPac and its installation on board the Bit Viking, the first LNG conver-sion of a vessel in service, were milestones in the uptake of LNG as a ship fuel, and this upgraded LNGPac is another significant step forward,” said Gerd-Michael Würsig, DNV GL business di-rector for LNG-fuelled ships. The heating media skid, a com-plete circuit of heat exchangers, pumps and piping, was earlier used to evaporate LNG for pres-surising the storage tank and to provide the engine with the cor-rect gas temperature. Instead of the heating media skid, the new LNGPac system directly utilis-es the engine’s cooling water, which results in fewer interfaces and less installation work for the

shipyard. By eliminating electri-cal consumers, Wärtsilä enables the vessel to become even more environmentally friendly.New innovative solutions have been applied to almost every aspect of the new, compact and easy-to-install fuel gas system. Besides the removal of the heating media skid and improvements to the Cold Recovery solution, the new LNGPac features innovations such as an integrated airlock and control cabinet, a more compact bunkering station, an enclosed or integrated gas valve unit, and maximised LNG storage volume.

New LED luminaire, reefer container socket and camera surveillance systemsAt SMM 2014 in Hamburg, German elec-trical equipment manufacturer WISKA is presenting a total of five new products to the international trade audience for the first time.

One highlight is the multi-functional LED multi-purpose luminaire 4000. The DNV GL-certified luminaire 4000 con-tains a minimum of system components and is maintenance-free. The elimination of extra housing not only reduces the need to procure and store spare parts, but also greatly simplifies installation. The time-consuming process of opening and closing the housing to replace the lamp is now completely eliminated. The LED tube can be clicked easily into place with-out any additional tools. The innovative lighting system is de-signed for use in both weather-exposed

and interior areas. The standard breath-able concept gives the electrics enhanced protection against moisture and conden-

sation water, thus preventing short cir-cuits and corrosion and ensuring a longer useful life.Particularly helpful for the user is the modular system design. The LED multi- purpose luminaire 4000 can be easily combined with other units depending on the desired application and lighting re-quirements. The flexible interconnection of two or more tubes provides the optimal level of illumination needed. Whether in engine rooms, on work platforms or car decks, the 4000 is optimised for maritime applications requiring reliable, durable and efficient lighting solutions.WISKA has developed a splitter for use in reefer container logistics that expands the number of reefer container sockets availa-ble on board. The PushIn Mobile Splitter is a portable unit that can turn one reefer container socket gang into two.

SMM DAILY NEWS ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

Over the years, the amount of electricity consumed by reefer containers has been re-duced. The mobile splitter now allows the existing electrical capacity on board to be

used by maximising the number of availa-ble reefer container sockets without requir-ing any modifications to the ship’s electrical infrastructure. The module can be quickly

and flexibly installed and uninstalled by the crew as needed. The system is an internationally stand-ardised CEE socket device compliant with IEC 60309 and has been DNV GL-certified. The proven PushIn tech-nology from WISKA ensures that volt-age is applied only when the plug is fully inserted. The connection is automati-cally turned off when the plug is pulled out.

The latest generation of CCTV cameras Among the other WISKA highlights at SMM 2014 are computer-controlled CCTV camera surveillance systems de-signed for the maritime industry. WISKA has a total of three new products: a flame-proof camera system for hazardous areas on board, a pan-and-tilt camera made of stainless steel, and a plastic dome camera of protection type IP 68. All three CCTV innovations are fully networkable (IP compatible). They can be easily integrated into existing onboard networks and centrally controlled. They also have advanced full-HD technology to deliver crystal clear, high-resolution images that go well beyond what ana-logue cameras can provide. The three camera stations can be operated via PoE (Power over Ethernet), which means that a single cable is used to transfer data and power to the CCTV system and no additional power supply is required.

Cassens & Plath, a German manufacturer of magnetic com-passes, is introducing its electronic inclinometer system at SMM 2014.

The intelligent system solution, which comprises a sensor and display unit, measures true heel angles, roll period, and true pitch angle and complies fully with Resolution MSC.363(92) – BSH/4542/001/0002636/ 14. It can be connected by serial or Ethernet port to VDRs of the new standard MSC.333(90), to bridge alarm management systems, conning, and efficien-cy monitoring systems, thus contributing to reduce fuel con-sumption.The electronic inclinometer system EI-1 is easy to install, as all necessary components are supplied with the package as standard. The intelligent, three-axis sensor to measure angles and accelerations can be installed at any horizontal place at the wheelhouse. EI-1 is a self-learning system that does not need any ship parameters. In case additional displays are needed, for instance at bridge wings or the cargo control room, the Ether-net network allows any number of slave displays.

comed the first arrival in Hamburg of the Queen Mary 2. At the time, this majestic vessel was the world’s largest and costliest cruise liner. That was when cruise liner fever really took hold in Hamburg. Every year, more and more cruise ships now depart Hamburg for destinations around the globe. They may head north to the Norwegian fjords, Spitsbergen and Iceland, or set out to explore England, Scotland and Ireland. Some go to Baltic Sea cities such as Tallinn and Riga, or voyage as far as Russia; others hug the western European coast, past Amsterdam down to the Mediter-ranean. Long-distance routes to the United States, South Africa and Australia also start in Hamburg.

Birthplace of the cruise industryWhen it comes to cruise liners, Hamburg has a long tradi-tion. If you stroll along the Ballindamm on the Inner Alster lake, you’ll pass by the headquarters of the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company. The street was named after the shipbuild-er Albert Ballin, who “invented” the cruise ship industry. In 1891, Ballin, director-to-be of the HAPAG shipping compa-ny, had a brilliant idea. He decided to send passenger ships that normally shuttled between Europe and North America on Mediterranean cruises during the winter months, when transatlantic bookings were low.Soon these excursions became highly popular, and in 1900, commissioned by HAPAG, the first ship designed

specifically for the purpose of cruise lining was built. The Princess Victoria Luise, which HAPAG expressly referred to as a “pleasure yacht”, had room for nearly 200 affluent first-class passengers. Within a short pe-riod of time, additional ships were built, among them cruise ships specifically designed for the middle and up-per-middle classes. Not only did Albert Ballin make seagoing voyages pop-ular, he also initiated the development of an entire mar-itime branch that quickly established itself and that continues to fascinate people around the world to this day. Since Ballin’s time, an increase in the amount of ships and the conquest of new and bigger target groups have lead to a boom in the cruise industry. This has also changed the face of Hamburg, birthplace of the cruise liner industry.

The cruise liner port of HamburgIn 2013, a total of about 550,000 tourists from more than 100 countries arrived in Hamburg on board 177 cruise liners. The number of passengers is expected to rise to one million by 2020. The city is well equipped to handle the increase, having two cruise terminals to welcome tourists and a third under construction at the Kronprinzkai quay in the middle of the port. It’s due to be completed in 2015.
