- 3. They started a town called Jamestown in the Virginia colony.
Jamestown was the first English town in America.
- 4. The Puritans were another group of people in England who
built towns in Massachusetts.
- 5. Roger Williams left the Puritans for freedom of religion. He
started the Rhode Island colony in 1636.
- 6. Anne Hutchinson also left the Puritans of Massachusetts. She
started her own town in Rhode Island.
- 7. Catholics came to America and started the colony called
Maryland.
- 8. In 1733, James Oglethorpe started the Georgia colony to help
poor people.
