Our value takes technology, experience, and perseveranceto create. Value comes in many forms. Sometimes it is out in the open, just waiting to be harnessed. Other times, it is elusive, hidden deep out of sight. And still other times, it must be created entirely from scratch with other resources.

At Samsung C&T, we work hard to tap resources of all kinds to help our customers create greater growth and prosperity for their customers.

TRADING

Chemicals & MaterialsFertilizers | We have exported a variety of fertilizers since the mid-1970s, steadily growing our sales volume over the years as we have entered new markets. Backed by Korea’s top specialists and marketing organization, we aim to become a top global trader in this field that is projected to see steady growth with the growing global focus on the importance of securing food resources.

Fine Chemicals | We have developed and supplied basic chemicals for use in mining, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, polyurethane, and other applications since 1989. We have had particular success in the mining industry, winning long-term contracts with major customers as we continue to actively pursue new business opportunities around the globe.

Petrochemicals | We have traded in aromatics and chemical fiber materials since 1989. Backed by more than 20 production facilities around the globe, we today trade with some of the world’s largest oil and chemical companies.

General Chemicals | We started importing and distributing general chemicals in Korea in 1975. Today, we operate more than 20 production facilities worldwide and our own distribution network to handle exports and intermediary trade in methanol and other chemicals as we continue to expand our global presence in this sector.

Electronic Materials | We help Korean companies big and small identify and secure the advanced semiconductor, display, and mobile technologies they need to compete and succeed in the global marketplace.

Electronic Parts & Equipment | We handle sales of SMT assembly equipment, used semiconductor equipment, and touchscreens for mobile devices. Today, we are pursuing opportunities for synergy with Samsung affiliates to secure the specialists and global business infrastructure necessary to expand our business opportunities.

SteelSteel Trading | We provide high-quality Korean-made steel products to major customers around the globe with a focus on automobile and home appliance manufacturers in China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. We continue to expand our market reach utilizing value-added business models such as vendor-managed inventory. Our global sourcing and sales network also enables us to source quality steel products from mills in China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia for sale in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East as well as our home market of Korea.

Stainless Steel Production | We are an emerging player in the global precision stainless steel industry. We entered this business in 1997 with the acquisition of Romanian stainless steel producer Otelinox. Our focus on value-added products as well as modernizing and improving efficiency following the acquisition dramatically improved profitability, earning Otelinox the “Company of the Year” award from the Romanian Chamber of Commerce in 2000.

Since then, we have continued to improve quality and optimize processes at Otelinox as well as expand our global production capacity with the acquisition of Japanese precision stainless steel producer Myodo Metal in 2008 and the completion of a new state-of-the-art mill in Pinghu, China in 2010.

Steel Service Centers | We operate a global network of steel service centers in China, Slovakia, Malaysia, and Mexico. We continue to strategically invest in overseas production and distribution bases to more effectively meet the needs of our growing global customer base.

At Samsung C&T, we have worked to secure a reliable supply of energy and mineral resources for our customers since the 1980s. In addition to this focus on resources trading, we are involved in the development of onshore and offshore oil and gas fields as well as mineral resources as we position ourselves to be an even more valuable partner for growth in the years ahead.

We are also involved in global sourcing and trading in a number of specialized fields from common materials such as textiles to renewable eco-friendly fuels such as wood pellets. We continue to grow our business portfolio in the food resources sector through our palm oil business in Indonesia.

Our Businesses

Natural ResourcesCoal & Mineral Resources Trading | We are one of Korea’s leading traders in coal, copper, rare metals, and other minerals. We continue to strategically invest in resource development projects in key regions worldwide to expand our capabilities to meet the resource needs of customers around the globe.

We have been a major supplier of coal to Korean steel mills, power and cogeneration plants, and cement makers since we first began importing hard coal from the US in 1979. Today, our growing customer base includes companies in major markets such as China and India as we continue to expand our global sourcing capabilities to meet rising demand.

We began actively trading copper in 1995. Today, we source this non-ferrous metal from strategic regions such as Chile, Peru, Kazakhstan, India, and Africa. We continue to grow this business by cultivating quality customers with a focus on China. We aim to strengthen our global market position through active involvement in both trading and development with an emphasis on Latin America and Africa.

We supply rare metals such as nickel, lithium, and cobalt as well as precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum group metals. Today, we are leveraging our existing sourcing network as well as developing new sources to meet rapidly growing demand for key rechargeable battery materials such as lithium and cobalt.

Oil & Gas Development | We have been actively involved in natural resources development projects around the world since the early 1980s. We partnered with Korea National Oil Corporation to acquire the offshore oil and gas production assets of Taylor Energy in the Gulf of Mexico with estimated reserves of 40 million barrels in 2008 and the onshore oil and gas assets of Parallel Petroleum in Texas and New Mexico with estimated reserves of 60 million barrels in 2012. We also have equity stakes in LNG liquefaction plants in Oman and Qatar as we continue to establish ourselves as a vertically integrated player in the clean energy sector.

Natural Gas Distribution | We became Korea’s first and only private importer of LNG from Malaysia in 1991. We have operated under a service agreement with Petronas LNG of Malaysia since 1993, serving as that company’s exclusive marketing partner in Korea. As of 2013, we currently have two long-term supply contracts totaling 4 million tons annually. We are also distributing gas in the US market from our gas production operations in that region as well as other small and medium-sized domestic gas producers.

Living IndustriesFashion & Textiles Trading | We source and sell apparel, footwear, fabrics, textiles, and synthetic materials around the globe. We are also creating new value in these businesses by identifying and partnering with up-and-coming players to create global brands. In the mid-1990s, we discovered the fledgling FUBU brand in the US and helped transform it into one of America’s most popular hip-hop casualwear brands of the decade. Today, our proven infrastructure centric business model gives aspiring brands the logistics, inventory management, and financing capabilities they need to reach a global audience.

Palm Oil Production | We are partners in an Indonesian palm plantation joint venture established in 2008 on the island of Sumatra. S&G Biofuel operates two palm plantations covering 24,000 hectares as well as two crude palm oil mills that produce over 100,000 tons of crude palm oil annually, the raw material used to produce cooking oil and biodiesel.

Wood Pellet Trading | We source this high-density, high-efficiency renewable fuel from suppliers in markets such as Russia, Southeast Asia, and North America, providing Korean power plants with a cleaner, more eco-friendly fuel source.

Industrial Plants | We supply a variety of value-added industrial plants and facilities to the global chemical, power, and energy industries. In 2012, we and consortium partners Korea Gas Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. of Japan launched operations at the USD 875 million Manzanillo LNG receiving terminal in Mexico. The build-own-operate (BOO) project will store, re-gasify, and deliver up to 3.72 million tons of LNG annually for a period of 20 years. The project also gives us a competitive edge in future expansion tenders as well as positioning us to expand our LNG value chain to include liquefaction, transportation, and distribution.

Ships & Offshore | We supply a variety of ships and offshore facilities to shipping and oil and gas companies around the globe. Rather than simply acting as a broker, we aim to be a total service provider by arranging tailored financing packages that meet the needs of both customers and shipyards. We are also focusing on infrastructure businesses related to both of these fields.

Infrastructure | We participate in official development assistance programs funded by the Korean government to help fundamentally improve the quality of life in underdeveloped countries. To date, our projects have included medical facilities, vocational training centers, e-government networks, and power transmission facilities.

Green EnergyThe first phase of the project involved completing a wind farm with annual generating capacity of 270MW that can supply power to 100,000 households in Chatham-Kent region, Southwest of Ontario. In addition, a 250MW wind and solar power cluster is under construction in Haldimand region. The second and third phases will include 549MW and 300MW of wind and solar power generation, respectively. Major wind and solar system components for the project are being produced at local manufacturing facilities in partnership with leading equipment makers, laying the foundation for a green energy industry that will create new jobs and growth opportunities for the region.

Solar Power Materials & Components Trading | We globally source and sell a complete range of materials and components used in the photovoltaic industry such as polysilicon, saw wire, and finished solar modules as we help foster growth across the entire solar PV value chain.

Plants & FacilitiesPower Plants | We supply state-of-the-art coal- and gas-fired thermal power plants to both public and captive utilities around the globe. Our extensive project management expertise is built on comprehensive analytical capabilities encompassing feasibility, legal, and regulatory reviews and organizing capabilities to bring together EPC contractors, fuel suppliers, plant operators, and energy brokers, and financing capabilities to make these large-scale projects a reality.

These capabilities have been instrumental in our successful bid in 2010 to build and operate Norte II 433MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant in northern Mexico in consortium with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The plant was completed in 2014. It was the first project that was secured and completed by Korean companies in the Mexican power plant market, laying ground for our entry into Latin American markets. The 1,320 MW coal-fired plant is located approximately 370 km northwest of the former capital of Almaty on the southwest shore of Lake Balkhash. We also won Balkhash thermal power project in Kazakhstan in consortium with KEPCO. Our work on Uljin 5 and 6 Shin-Wolsong 1 and 2 nuclear plants in Korea paved the way for us to win the Abu Dhabi nuclear power project as part of a consortium in 2009. Our successful completion of an LPG storage tank project in Qatar in 2002 and the Pyeongtaek LNG receiving terminal in Korea in 2008 also raised our profile in the energy storage facility field, enabling us to win an EPC order for Singapore’s first LNG receiving terminal which began operations in 2013.

Residential ProjectsWe are committed to enhancing homeowner satisfaction though the continuous pursuit of living-space innovations. Since 2000, our Raemian apartment brand has distinguished itself with innovative home designs, resident-centric services, and creative marketing. Today, we continue to invest in R&D to create residential developments that fuse technology and sensibility with a focus on eco-friendliness, well-being, and convenience.

Infrastructure ProjectsOur work on subway, rail, bridge, port, dam, and other large-scale infrastructure projects around the globe is making us an emerging player in the sector. Backed by ongoing investment in both people and technical innovation, our world-class EPC capabilities enable us to manage every project aspect from engineering to construction as we expand our horizons through public-private partnerships and infrastructure operation.

In recent years, we have demonstrated our technical capabilities through high-profile projects such as Yeongjong Grand Bridge, the world’s longest self-anchored suspension bridge and the first to use three-dimensional air-spinning for the cable work, and Incheon Grand Bridge, the world’s fifth-longest cable-stayed bridge. These major undertakings as well as our work on Busan New Port in Korea, high-speed rail projects in Korea and Taiwan, mass transit rail projects in Singapore and Hong Kong, and tens of other infrastructure projects continue to elevate our reputation in the global market.

Power & Energy ProjectsWe have completed or are in the process of completing a number of major combined-cycle and coal-fired thermal power plants in global markets. In 2011, we won the Qurayyah independent power project in Saudi Arabia—the world’s largest thermal power project to date—followed by the Emal thermal power project in the UAE.

Commercial ProjectsOur extensive construction and project management experience spans all areas of commercial construction. We pride ourselves on creating high-tech methods that reduce costs and completion time as well as optimized design engineering to make maximum use of any space.

Our work on the world’s three tallest buildings—the Burj Khalifa in the UAE, Taipei 101 Tower in Taiwan, and Petronas Tower II in Kuala Lumpur—has made us the global leader in mega-high-rise building construction, demonstrating our ability to handle the most challenging projects in the business. Beyond these landmark projects, our construction portfolio touches every aspect of the industry. From high-tech manufacturing plants, airport terminals, convention centers, and sports stadiums to medical centers, hypermarkets, museums, hotels, and resorts, we’re delivering projects of all kinds on time and on budget as we raise the standard for quality and satisfaction.

Sustainable Management

We’re bringing sustainable value to the world.

Pursuing Satisfaction Through InnovationWe are strengthening our competitiveness in our traditional trading businesses by leveraging the competitiveness of our global network, market intelligence, and business capabilities. In our pursuit of innovation through this process, Samsung C&T Corporation joined The World's Most Admired Companies list by Fortune Magazine in 2014. We also ranked third in the Trading Industry category, gaining international recognition for our business competitiveness and innovation capabilities.

Hiring and Nurturing Global TalentOur people are playing a pivotal role as we explore new business opportunities and develop existing ones in today’s increasingly competitive global environment. In addition to cultivating internal talent, we hire and nurture top global talent to secure the professionals essential for leadership in today’s and tomorrow’s businesses. Our Global Assignee and Global Trainee programs offer the subsidiary and office managers who will lead our overseas businesses a broad range of training and on-the-job experience at both corporate headquarters and local operations. We also operate regional specialist and short-term dispatch programs to give our people a more global perspective as well as sponsoring a growing range of overseas MBA programs in strategic markets.

Learning and Respecting Local CultureAs a company engaged in global business across a broad spectrum of fields, we recognize that having a solid cultural understanding of the countries we do business in is key to our success. We respect local laws and strive to cultivate open channels of communication with a wide range of stakeholders through both person-to-person and cultural exchanges. Before we enter a market, we conduct a variety of internal training programs and events to help familiarize our people with the local culture. We also take our social responsibility seriously by getting actively involved in making a positive difference in each local community.

Selecting and Focusing for SuccessWe have reorganized our business portfolio around the core fields of trading and organizing to strengthen our fundamental competitiveness as we work to foster greater synergy between businesses and enhance our competitiveness in global markets. To more effectively manage our portfolio, we have evaluated and selected areas of focus in each business field, putting in place business models for success in those fields as we continue to take steps to reinforce areas where our capabilities or profitability require improvement.

At Samsung C&T, we aim to be a trusted partner that delivers greater value to our customers. Backed by a commitment to excellence in corporate citizenship, we are focused on creating a brighter future for all.

Social Responsibility

Serving Communities Around the GlobeWe operate a number of community service initiatives primarily focused on children from low-income families in the overseas communities where we have a presence. One of these initiatives has been in Delhi, India, where we have partnered with a local customer to regularly visit a local facility for children with disabilities, helped upgrade facilities such as the addition of a new library, and sponsored cultural exchanges.

Creating Hope for the Next GenerationSince 2009, we have supported Plan Korea, a child development organization that works to promote children’s rights to end child poverty in 50 developing countries across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In addition to financially sponsoring 136 children, we continue to build close, meaningful relationships with them through correspondence, visits, and a variety of other activities.

Sharing the Warmth with the DisadvantagedAt the end of each year, we sponsor an annual bazaar to sell goods donated by our employees and their families to raise funds to benefit the disadvantaged in our local communities. The funds are used to purchase winter underclothing, jackets, bedding, and other articles for live-alone seniors and welfare facilities as well as school uniforms for children of low-income families.

Volunteering to Serve the Most NeedyMany of our employees are involved in visiting, serving, and supporting the disabled, the elderly, and the orphaned on a regular basis. In 2013, a total of 831 employees provided 14,795 hours of service combined to local communities as volunteers. Currently, 99.4% of all our employees have signed up for regular donation to the marginalized members of our society. We also stand at the ready to help in the event of man-made and natural disasters, providing both equipment and manpower for recovery and reconstruction.

Working for a World Without Discrimination and PrejudiceOur primary social responsibility initiative focuses on helping children from multiethnic families grow up to be well-adapted and respected members of society. Since 2006, we have partnered with Pearl S. Buck Foundation Korea, the nation’s only foundation dedicated to supporting multiethnic children and their families. We support scholarships and seek to raise societal awareness of multiethnic children through the sponsorship of a variety of programs such as annual Children’s Day events and summer camps as well as the support of volunteers who serve in the foundation’s programs.

At Samsung C&T, we are committed to improving the quality of life wherever we do business. Volunteers are at the heart of our outreach, generously giving their time and talents to make a difference in local communities.

We’re sharing value with local communities.

About Samsung

Ranked the world’s 8th most valuable brand in 2013 by Interbrand, Samsung Group is Korea’s largest conglomerate with interests in a wide range of businesses from consumer electronics to petrochemicals and advertising to life insurance.

The Samsung story began with the founding of Samsung Sanghoe (Samsung Trading Company) back in 1938. Following the end of World War II, the newly renamed Samsung Corporation—now known as Samsung C&T Corporation—entered the business of international trade in earnest. After the Korean War, Cheil Industries and Cheil Jedang were founded in the 1950s to produce textiles and sugar, respectively, heralding the dawn of Korea’s industrial modernization and the beginning of the end of the nation’s reliance on imports for basic consumer goods.

Samsung entered the electronics business in the late 1960s, adding chemicals, machinery, and semiconductors during the 1970s. In 1983, Samsung Electronics developed the world’s first 64-kilobit DRAM chip, seizing a lead in the global memory industry that it has yet to relinquish. During this period of expansion and innovation, a global mindset also played a key role in Samsung’s emerging global competitiveness. In 1993, the group began a new era with the announcement of the “New Management” initiative. Focusing on fundamental change and quality-driven management, the initiative laid the foundation for Samsung’s ascent into the ranks of the world’s top conglomerates over the rest of the decade.

With the advent of the 21st century, Samsung’s focus has shifted to the themes of sustainability and social responsibility, areas that are becoming increasingly important to every company with global aspirations. But even as the themes of management change with the times, the one thing that has remained consistent is the group’s mission statement—“We will devote our human resources and technology to create superior products and services, thereby contributing to a better global society.” It is a mission that is now guiding the group as it strives to take its competitiveness to the next level through globalization, IT-based reorganization, and multifaceted integration. And as Samsung actively lives and shares this mission, its future as a global group of blue-chip companies dedicated to being the world’s best in their respective businesses is certain to shine even brighter.
