Overtures have been mado to induce tlio woman to express regret or contrition. In tlio prido of conscious innocence sbo lias rejected them all with scorn. Does a woman promise in the presence of her father and witnesses to bo faithful in lust? Does a mnn promise in the presence of bis mother nnd witnesses to be faithful in lust? Do people go before their parents to pledge fe­alty and honor in lust? No, ten thousand times n o ! * *• * * j)0 people about to enter upon a career of concubinage meet in tho presence of their parents and friends, stand up upon the iloor, join hands, read form­al stipulations and statements, then at the end of tho ceremony kiss each other and receive tho congratula­tions of tlieir friends? Yet this was all done in this

case. Is this lust, or is it marriage? There enn ho hat one answer, it is marriacie. Suppose tho patties do repudiate tho powers conferred upon liusbauds nnd wives, they nowhere declino to perform tho duties of matrimony. I apprehend that neither tho law' nor society need have any concern lest there should not he sufficient cu-ercisa of marital rights, yet this would seoin to ho the only objection to this compact. What motives prompted this sudden and unbrothcrly act does not appear, nor is it important. Tho ignorant unlettered local press at onco set tip a great howl and poisoned tho minds of tho public against tho accused, and though their sinister, lawless and molioorutic ut­terances wero laid before Judge Cro/.ier in an affidavit fortdmugoof venue, ho held theso people for trial in an atmosphere of hatred and ignorant prejudice, be­cause "tho affidavit stated no facts.” Tho trial pro­ceeded with tho rapidity of a court martial, all bunds intent on “being in at tho death.” For more than four months these innocent people have been in prison nnd though they are refined nnd intellectual , persons they have been denied tho privilege of any reading matter whatsoever during tho latter part of sajd im­prisonment. Overtures have been mado to induce tlio woman to express regret or contrition. In tlio prido of conscious innocence sbo lias rejected them all with scorn. Lu c ife r lias been behaving rather badly of late, and wo have nbout concluded not to make any more prom­ises that we are not sure of being able to fulfill. When we skipped the first week in January we thought there would he no necessity of making another break soon in the regular weekly issue, hut now we have found ourselves almost compelled to omit tho issue for Janu­ary 21st. The printing of the “supplemental brief,” (24. pages) for our counsel, the closing paragraphs of which we liavo reproduced on first page, was a job that took several days time of our whole force; and we are so situated that it is seldom we can get extra help when we need it. This threw us so far behind on the paper that we concluded the best tiling to do would be to date this issuo Jan. 28, instead of Jan. 21.

We hope our friends, especially our correspondents who have sent matter for 'publication, will kindly “exerciso the grace of patience,” and also remember the old adage, “Put yourself in his place.”

An old subscriber in Iowa writes,“I do not feel able to contribute to tlio support of a publication that does not, editorially, mako our fraudulent monetary sys­tem and fraudulent bonded debt, a leading feature.” Another good friend, whoso lifo is devoted to land re­form and tlio industrial problem, writes us from tbo far east, “IIopo you will not take it as unfriendly, or misapprehend what I say. I simply assort tho right to advocato the pivotal issuo of reform without com­mitting myself to extreme or Sulo issues.”

These correspondents are both men. Now lioar wbat a woman lias to say about “issues.” Mrs. Colby, editor of tbo Woman’s.Tiibunc, Beatrice, Neb., in an address before tlio equal suffrago convention at Topo- ka, on tho evening of the 13th inst., gave uttcranco to language substantially, if not in exact words, liko this:

“The floods of vice'and crime and the waves of despotism that aow threaten tho very existence of our republic, havo their origin and chief hold in the family itself, The home life must bo perilled and ennobled before the national life can be purified aud ennobled. And this reformation of tho home can never be accomplished until wometn Is inditndualized—not until woman is emancipated. Our laws and customs do grant to the unmarried woman a large share of individuality, bat as soon as she is married her individuality is raergod into iVit of her husband. This must nil be changed. Wo­man's porsonnlity, her individuality must be recognized and re. epected in the home as well as out of it or we ean never hopo to see a higher and puror morality iu eocioty—in state or nation.”

Here, then, wo liavo three diverse opinions as to wbat is tlio pivotal issuu of reform. Now take this from lngersoll’s “Lay Sermon:”

"Understand I am not blaming theso people. There is a good deal of human nature in us all. You remembar the story of the man who made a speech at a Socialist meeting, uud closed It by saying, “TiinnU God, I.am no monopolist,” but as ho-sank, t^-this Boat said, “But I wish to tlio 1-ord I was!” We must remsmber that those rich men are naturally produced. Do not.blame them. Blame the system!”

Yes, yes, “blanto tbo system,” Bro. Iitgcrsoll, but who made tlio system, and who upholds it to-day? Ask a majority of men, and they will say, “Alt well, tlio system is as good as tlio people that mado it, and that support it. When they got tired of it they’ll change it—not before. You can't hurry tlio matter much, with safety. Evolution moves slow,”

And thus it is that nine men out of ten, perhaps, set­tle quietly down into passive acquiescence, intent on­ly in making tho most for .themselves out of the sys­tem, and expecting nothing else than that their neigh­bors will do the same.

Is this a pessimistic view of the case? Perhaps so, but tho facts—tho stubborn, hard and cold, facts, bear out this view. What then? Shall wo imitate our neighbors? Shall wo simply let tilings slide, content to slide with them, provided wo slido on top of tlio moving mass? This wool .1 seem tlio dictate of world­ly wisdom, but some of tis nro so organized—unfortu­nately perhaps—that wo cannot bo content thus to slido with tho multitude, and then tlio question will reciiv, “what aro you going to do about it? Where can you tako hold in a wav that promises to do any good?” '

And this brings us hack to tlio question raised at tho head of this articlo. I t is a question of “issues.” Wo cannot handle them all—at once; then we must select that which wo deem most important. And that is just what Lucifer is trying to do to-day. In looking over the ground wo think -Mis. Colby is nearer right than tlio others quoted, and tlicrciore maintain that tho Emancipation of Woman as to her Sex-hood and Motherhood is tlio iuvotai. issue.! We liavo hut little hopo that tlio pcoplo of this generation can boporsuad- oil to do much belter than they aro now doing, but if tho wav can ho mado clear for tho “Horning of Better Bahies1’ for a new generation of women and men tbon wo think a tremendous gain will liavo been mado. Let woman be imlietilualizcel—let her men herself in in marriage, as well as out of it, and thoro wilt not be so many unwelcome children horn as now; not so many criminals borr. as now, to fill prisons and to swing from thu gallows; not so many half-formed, idiotic abortions with too little mind to tako care of them­selves and yet with animal life enough to give a world of enro aud tvouldo to thcir'parents, and to swell tho publio taxes.

This, then, is otir answer to tlioso who want us to devote Lucifer to tho finance reform, tho land, the la­bor and tariff reforms. All these Uavo ablo advocates, hut very fow papers are dovoted to tho reform under­lying all others—tho reform .that will givo us true, brave, self-reliant manhood and womanhood—tlio wo­manhood and manhood that will scorn to r k o for their natural rights, but will i ik m a x u tlioso rights, and if the demand is unheeded will not. lack tlio courage to t a k k them!

In thus saying, however, wo do not mean that none of Lucifer's space will be dovotod to other issues tlian tlio ono we regard as pivotal. All wo mean to say

hero is that wo shall probably continue to givo our chief attention to discussions relating to tho problem that now, to us, seems most vitally important.

----------o----------Quite a sensational letter was published in tho Os-

kaloosa Independent of a recent date. Tlio letter is anonymous, was said to boar the postmark, Norwood, •Iowa, and was addressed to “It: D. Simpson, J. P., Valley Falls; and Judge Crozicr, and Sheriff IIousli, Oskaloosa, Kail.” This document,-as it appears in the Independent, looks much liko a poster, so much of it being printed iu large capital letters. I t is filled with blood-curdling threats against the officials just named, telling them that if Lillian Ilarraan and Edwin Walk, er arc not released in less than a month “your old carcasses will bo more liable to bo in tlio dissecting- room than anywhere else”—with much more of tho samo sort. We do not caro to tako up valuable space with this transparent fraud—whether lio is more knave than fool or more fool thanknavo it would bo hard to tell—and merely notice him hero to say that ffftv dol­lars reward lias been offered by a responsible friend of Lucifer for tbo identification'of tho writer of this threatening epistle—that is, such identification as would secure conviction. Tlio evident aim of tlio writer was to excite the ignorant and unthinking to deeds of violctico against us and against our property, and also to mako it go still harder with tlio prisoners at Oskaloosa. Wbilo it may possibly liavo this effect wo feel sure that no reasonable man or woman will bo deceived by tho thin disguise of this half-witted enemy of Lucifer and tlio Lucifer hand.

The letter contains internal evidence that it was written hero in Valley Falls and 'sent to Iowa to ho mailed.

A few words only to friend Warren: He says,“what I meant was that as individualists tboy had no right to mako thoir lovo relations known.” I t is hard for ono individualist to Bpeak for another, therefore I shall not now presumo to do so, authoritively, hut will venture a thought or two, from ray own standpoint, in behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.

When attempting to determiuo wliat Lillian as an individualist should liavo done we must first kuow what her individuality consisted of, what her person­ality really is or was. Wo must reracrabgr that con­science is a largo factor in tho personality of every in­dividual, whether ho bo well-born or ill-born, well- trained or ill-trained, and that this conscience is about as bard to throw off, or radically change, as it is to throw off or radically cliango tlio features of ono’s face; and this for tbo simple reason that conscience, liko tho features of ono's face, is part of his or her inheritance. Now in Lillian’s case tho most powerfully marked fea­ture of this inheritance called conscience, was and is an aversion to concealment, or secrcsy, and especially so in matters pertaining to sex-relations. Friend War­ren will perhaps regard it as a fantastic superstition and as an evidence of mental weakness, but it is doubtless true, nevertheless, that, by forco of heredity and training, Lillian Mould have preferred to meet death in its most frightful form rather than comprom­ise her. conscience by sustaining clandestine sex-reia- tions with any man. Candor, uprightness of charao ter, with Lillian’s mental mako-up, would not have permitted her to conceal her relation to Mr. Walker. She could not if sho would, she would not if she could.

So much for herself. Then there was tho considera­tion ot tho feelings of others, to say nothing of rights. Sho wished to avoid doing anything that would givo a rude shock to the feelings ot tlioso to whom sho felt indebted for many an act of kindness. She know that this departure from established forms, ceremonies and customs, that sho felt impelled] by principle to make, and -which slio really did make, would deeply pain many u-hose lovo and esteem slio valued most highly, and therefore sho felt disposed to conciliate so far as possible -without a surrender of principle, without a surrender of individualism—which individualism she most distinctly asserted in tho declaration of princi­ples read at tho timo of tlio “Autonomistio mar­riage,” and for which assertion, openly and candidly made, sho has been for four months so cruelly perse­cuted and abused.

This m-o think presents tho caso in a light not hard to ho understood. While Mr. Walker, as he himself declares, u-as opposed to a l l publio announcements, all publio acknowledgements of tlio proposed relation­ship, lio could, as a Targe-hearted, chivalrous-minded man, concede to Lillian as tho chief sufferer in what might hooomo a most painful sacrifice on tho altar of humanity’s redemption from sex-prostitution—hocould concede to her tho right to decide whether there should be any public announcement of that proposed relationship or not.

Tlio trouble u-itb Mr. Wan-on, and many others, seems to bo that lie and they cannot understand lion- it is possiblo for nooplo to bo married and y e t be “in­dividualists,” lie savs of this ease, “thoir marriage becomes man-iago, and they practically turn their hacks upon freedom.” If tlioy had accepted marriage, as “commonly understood and enforced,” this asser­tion of Mr. Warren would ho true, otherwise it is false. Let them speak for themselves. Lillian claims that she surrenders no natural right; Edwin “abdicates in advance a m , marital rights.”! In the language of tho Kansas statuto. m-o claim that "marrige is a civil oon- tract to which tho consent of the parties is essential," and wo claim that there is nothing else essential. This places marriage on a plane with all ^otlicr civil con­tracts, and concedes to us the right to mako it a “surrender," or not a surrender, just as u-o see fit.

Tho supply ot copies ot briefs of our counsel, Messrs Overmyer and Clemens, is nearly exhausted,- but if there should ba sufficient 'demand wo will reprint both documents in one, and sell it for 25 cts. Tho two will make n pamphlet of about 40 pages, and will present a mass of information and argument in regard to what constitutes legal marriage in tho United States, that ennuot fail to be very interesting reading to ull who care to know anything nbout such m at­ters.

My Comrades: If I could save mychildren from a pack of wolves by throwing them a piece of meat, I should most nssurodly do it. True, I would muoh rather shoot the wolves, but if that wero not practicable I should do tho other thing, and I don 't believe my conscience would trouble mo in tholonst on account of its being a “sacrifice of prin­ciple.” The so-called men who have laid their vilo hands upon L illiau Harman are animals of a higher grade. The dis­tinction between men and animals is this: A man respocts justice and thoequal right of his fellow, nud never usos physical force against another oxoept in defense of right aud justioe, while au animal is moro or loss blind to theso principles, and note iu selfish disregard of them.

I have alt possiblo respect for tho'opin- iou of those who see a sacrifice ot princi­ple in tho net of rescuing L illian Harman by paying n ransom. I don 't brag over them at nil, (or nuybody else) but I don't see things as they do simply because I am “not built that way." I have a special rospoct for tlie sentim ent of friends iu prison, and honor them, while not agreeing with them, for their adherence to it.

I wish to say right here, nnd very em­phatically, that L illian 's father did just right in refraining from doing aught against her request, on account of her minority. Sho has shown herself wor­thy to bo treated ns a woman aud not n child. In my opinion wo cannot afford to leave hor in jail. I bolievo sho is worth more out of jail than iu it, though she has earnod big wages for herself and the cause of Freedom for the time al­ready spent, and doubtless will for n time longor. I bolievo iu whatever is inevitable.

I know it is a great humiliation to liavo them throw tho meat to tho wolves. A prompt and skilful use of powder aud ball would be bo much moro satisfactory. Tho strongest foeliug I have in tho m at­ter is that of disgust nt myself that I have not the ability to raise a forco suf­ficient to libornte her. B ut everything is just us it is, nnd tho question is, ofl always, what is the best to do under the circumstances? I indorse what F. S. Harman and H. O. "Whitehead have said, except that I would not throw upon Lillian and W alker tho burden ot con­senting to bo liberated in the manner proposed. We must rospoct each others peculiarities ot thought. Aud I object to Moses Harman payinga cent of theso “costs.” Let him advance any part of the amount necessary, but it is our af­fair as much as his, and he has more than his share of tho oommon load to bear, a t best.
