Title : "The effect of different brands of soft drinks on the decay on meats."

Hypothesis : The acidity in the different brands of soft drinks can hasten dissolution of meat.

Statement of the Problem:

Is it safe to drink soft drink after eating raw meat (kinilaw)?

What is/are the effect/s of soft drink/s on the meat we eat?

What are the acidity levels of the different types of soft drinks?

How soluble are the different types of meat on the different types of sofdrinks?

Method of Data Collection

INTERVIEW : What are the misconceptions of Filipinos, of different age, on the belief on the

method of drinking soft drink after a meal?

  LABORATORY EXPERIMENT :

o  To test the acidity levels of the different types of soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, RC) on

different meat.

o  Identify the Ph level of different types and brand of soft drinks

o  Identify the effect/s of soft drinks on the meat that we eat.

o  Identify the solubility of different types of meat (Pork/Chicken/Beef/Fish) on different

types of soft drinks

o  Conclude on the effect and safety of drinking soft drinks

MATERIALS:

Different types/ brands of soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, RC)

o  Suggested brands are due to different companies producing them.  Different types of Meat (Pork, Chicken, Beef, Fish)

o  Should be fresh, and if frozen for days, should be defrosted at least 2 hours before the

experiment

  16 beakers (Size: 250mL)

  Distilled water

  Clippers

Markers (Pentel pen and Masking Tape)

METHODOLOGY

a)  Interview people on the misconceptions of the effect of soft drinks on the food that they eat.

b)  Prepare the different types/brands of soft drinks (Coke, Pepsi, RC) and the different types of

meat (pork, Chicken, Beef, Fish).

c)  Group the Beakers into 4 (Control, Coke, Pepsi, RC) with 4 beakers Each

d)  On the 1st 4 beaker : Will serve as the control SET-UP

a.  Put a masking tape/ Mark all the beakers with“CONTROL SET-UP”

b.  Mark each beakers with the Following: Pork, Chicken, Beef, Fish

c.  Cut a match box-size of different meats approximately 50-100 grams

d.  Lay it on the beaker using a clipper. (Avoid touching the meat to avoid contamination of

bacteria from hands.)

e.  Pour water on the beaker. The water should be half the meat lying on the beaker. (The

amount of liquid is determined by the different sizes of the beaker. This level will

produce the maximum absorption point for the meat in question)

f.  Repeat the following steps for the different types of soft drinks. Your set-ups should

look like this:

g.  Cover the beakers with aluminum foil to make sure that pathogens in the air will notaffect the decay process of the meat in question.

h.  Check the experiment per hour for 24 hours. Observation should start in the morning to

sunset (7am  – 7pm) for the first observation. Leave the set-ups for the night, you may

not observe it per hour. At 7 am on the next morning, the final result should be

documented and well observed. (If possible, take a photo of the set-ups per hour on the

first 12 hours.)

QUESTIONS TO BE ADRESSED:

What is the purpose of the CONTROL SET-UP (the experiment using water)?

What is the effect of soft drinks on the decay of the meat that we it?

Are the collected information from the interview match/ similar with the result of your

Laboratory experiment?

What are the misconceptions? Cite the differences.

Is your Hypothesis Correct? Support it in terms of your Laboratory Result.

Is your hypothesis false? Cite what made your hypothesis wrong?

What other factors can be observed? (Smell, Texture of the meat, amount of liquid left)

What factors affect the dissolution of your meat?

Does sunlight affect the dissolution of your meat?

What can you conclude from the experiment?
