e Dear Neighbours,

The year is swiftly moving on and I am writing this whilst enjoying the sunshine in the garden accompanied by the sounds of birds chirping, lawnmowers rumbling and little Milo cat purring on my lap. It feels like a Summer morning although we’re still in Spring.

You’ll find plenty to keep you busy over the coming months - we have the Hospital Fete coming up on 6th June and there will be another Eden Valley Festival running from 23rd May to the 6th June. Unfortunately, and it is with regret, the Chamber of Commerce have had to cancel the annual Fun Day and Car Parade on the Bank Holiday as there simply wasn’t the man power to put on an event of this magnitude. They are hoping it will be back in forthcoming years!

I popped along to the hft Spring Fair last month and they did a super job in keeping the fair running despite the not so great weather we had on the day. The Edenbridge Town Band were playing tunes throughout the afternoon to provide excellent backing music to the fair. I heard that by the end of the day Larmars Catering had

completely sold out of their Hog Roast so there were clearly some very hungry visitors to eat that much hog!

What has now become an annual event in my own calendar and that of a group of my friends is the Scout Quiz. We may not have won the quiz (again) but we all had fun as usual and the Scouts raised a grand total of £1200 which is a great result. Quiz Nights are very popular fundraising activities for many of our local organisations and such fun to attend. If you fancy getting a team together then the local CAB are holding one on the 9th May at the Eden Centre (more details on page 18).

It is now that I wish to share with you the latest project I have become involved in. On 30th April I will be launching my first online radio show - The

Community Show. It will cover all things community, charity and fundraising taking place in Kent and on the county borders. You may remember reading that I currently co-host “The Women in Business Radio Show” so it was only a matter of time before I was going to launch my own show. It will mainly

e be chat and it will certainly be interactive using social media (particularly twitter) during the show. Not only will I be presenting but also producing it so I will soon be learning how to operate all the controls in the studio. I’d love it if you could tune in at 10am and join me and my able co-presenter Russell, for our launch show. Just go to the website at www.channelradio.co.uk and select the ‘Listen

Live’ option or you can ‘Listen Again’.

I hope you enjoy this issue and please, as usual, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. Deadline for the July/August issue is 29th May!

Until next time...

re EdenClean - serving the town for 30 years

34a High Street has been a dry cleaners since 1985 and has been under the ownership of Sav Cafer since 2000. While the dry cleaning industry itself has not changed much over the years, the clothing industry has with the introduction of machine washable suits and now for many, workwear has become a more casual affair than it was in the 80’s. This of course has had an impact not just on EdenClean but dry cleaners up and down the country.

Even the town itself has had an impact on the trade at EdenClean since the closure of the large offices that used to feature in our town. But EdenClean pushes on, providing an essential service to those that still have ‘Dry Clean Only’ labels in their wardrobes.

Of course it’s not just dry cleaning services you get at EdenClean, other services are:

Shirt wash and iron service - £2.50 per shirt Shirt iron only service - £1.50 per shirt Duvet and pillow cleaning Laundry services for restaurants, hotels

and the general public

Repairs and alterations Carpet cleaner hire Wedding dress service

It’s not all about the cleaning services when you use EdenClean but the friendly customer service as well. Lisa has been working there for 15 years and is certainly a familiar face about town and Oz joined the team a year ago, working on a part-time basis.

Opening times are:Monday to Friday: 8.30am to 5.30pm

Wednesdays: 8.30am to 1pmSaturdays: 8.30am to 4pm

re appearances - Transforming the way we look Pt 5

Here we are again but for a change it’s not been to undergo any treatment in Gillian Huntley’s clinic as she has been very busy preparing for the latest in her line of offerings to be launched at the end of May.

First of all a quick recap if you’ve not seen these features before about what Gillian does. She is an experienced Aesthetic Therapist, who will be celebrating 30 years in the industry next year and specialising in Advanced Aesthetics for more than 15 years.

Although her own clinic is in Chiselhurst, she treats many of her local clients at Options Beauty Salon here in the High Street.

There are many treatments Gillian can carry out for her clients which, as well as boosting confidence, can also transform their lives. The most common treatments she performs are:

semi-permanent make-up medical tattooing thread vein/pigmentation/skin tag

removals scar relaxation

specialist waxing

So, just what has Gillian been busy planning?

The appearances Advisory Service

Starting towards the end of May, Gillian will be running a series of events (dates and venues to be confirmed) which will go into further detail about the treatments she offers, as well as those of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeons, nurses, technicians and other specialist consultants. Gillian as well as the other specialists will give presentations on the treatments they offer and will be able to answer any questions you may have.

Although there is such a lot of information available on such treatments, to be able to ask the experts directly will be of huge benefit to many who are deciding whether they should have any treatments done. There will also be guests who have undergone the various procedures who will be happy to share their own experiences with you. Being able to talk to people directly can do a lot to put people’s minds at rest about the processes involved.

If you’ve ever thought about having semi-permanent make-up, skin tag removals, or any other treatments done but have been worried about the possible pain or side effects, now is your chance to find out more in a relaxed environment. Even better still, go along with a friend and make a morning/evening of it.

These treatments are not just for women either, Gillian has many male clients coming to see her, and one of the most popular treatments for this group is skin tag removal so come on guys, join in and find out about the benefits you can also receive from aesthetic therapy!

Hospice in the Weald - Open Gardens 2015Summer’s just around the corner, country gardens are bursting into colour and Hospice in the Weald Open Gardens is here once again to help you find some of the most delightful in our region.

Our Open Gardens scheme raised just over £11,000 for the hospice last year and, with some exciting additions for 2015, lots more visitors are likely to fancy a stroll around gardens of all shapes and sizes - small ones to inspire creativity, larger areas to explore, gardens for wildlife enthusiasts and interesting ideas for fruit and vegetable plots. In several villages, neighbours are opening a chain of gardens so that visitors can wander from one to another.

To request a brochure please contact Pam Coleman on 01892 820 502 or email [email protected] or visit www.hospiceintheweald.org.uk.

ture Edenbridge Community First Responders

When people fall ill or become injured they often need medical attention and receiving early treatment, especially in very serious cases, increases a person’s chance of recovery. For example, in the case of a cardiac arrest, every minute without resuscitation and defibrillation reduces the chances of survival by 10 per cent.

The Ambulance Service responds immediately to all life threatening calls but delays can still occur due to:

• High volumes of calls• Traffic congestion in towns• Remote rural locations

This is where Community First Responders have a critical role to play. Edenbridge Community First Responders are volunteer members of the community who are trained by the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) to respond to emergency calls providing vital assistance to people who are ill or injured prior to the arrival of the Emergency Services. In our local area, when a ‘999’ call is made, the SECAmb Emergency Operations Centre despatches an Emergency Ambulance and/or Response Car and at the same time, for serious and /or life threatening occurrences, contacts the Community First Responder who is on duty.

All Edenbridge Community First Responders live locally so they can attend an emergency within minutes. Usually the Responder is the first to arrive on the scene and begins to treat the patient by:

• Clearing and controlling the airway of an

unconscious patient• Providing resuscitation and

heart defibrillation• Controlling any bleeding• Giving oxygen therapy• Making the patient feel more

comfortable and at ease• Taking basic ‘observations’ (blood pressure,

pulse rate, breathing, etc)• Reassuring worried family and friends• Using local knowledge to help the ambulance

find the location quickly.

If a person has suffered a cardiac arrest, the most vital piece of equipment the Responder carries is the defibrillator. This is used to deliver a controlled electric shock to try to restore the patient’s heart to a normal rhythm. The quicker this can happen, the better the chance of survival. It can mean the difference between life and death.

The Edenbridge Community First Responders group formed in November 2014 as a charitable organisation. They fundraise for purchasing equipment necessary to provide the service and to raise awareness of life saving procedures in the community. Currently there are four qualified responders with three additional volunteers due to undertake training in the next 3 months. The final aim of Edenbridge Community First Responder group is to operate a 24 hour, 7 day week, 365 days a year emergency response service in Edenbridge and surrounding villages.

To find out more and be kept up to date with Edenbridge Community First Responders news please like the Facebook page www.facebook.com/edenbridgecfr. If you would like to make a donation or help with fundraising activities please email [email protected].

re The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costsThe sun has been shining as I wrote this article which means the warmer weather is upon us - thank goodness!

I am always being kept busy and entertained by the goings on in Edenbridge and seem to have spent quite a bit of time recently at hft - not just for their Spring Fair which was well attended, plus we managed to pick up a few bits for the home, but Laura also won a competition to have afternoon tea at the Oak Tree Bistro and that was certainly a memorable experience.

We had more cake than we could shake a stick at, but luckily they gave us a doggie bag to take home what we couldn’t eat. If you haven’t been there before I highly recommend you try their cakes!

But back to the world of The Barrister Broker and how I can significantly reduce people’s legal costs…

For the benefit of readers not familiar with my feature, I am not a lawyer and cannot give legal advice. I am a freelance Barristers’ Clerk and facilitator making life easier for people who need legal services by arranging for them to have direct access to barristers - the top tier lawyers in this country - INSTEAD of going to solicitors. The main benefits in going direct to a barrister are legal expertise - you get specialist advice from the outset, and you pay less - typical savings overall compared to solicitors is around 50%.

I have a particular passion in helping people involved in family law matters because this is an area that can be excessively expensive using solicitors, especially those who charge

solely by the hour, and because I can empathise having been through a divorce myself when my children were very young. As clients of mine will know, I make a difference both in terms of the quality of legal advice and representation from the barristers that I arrange and the cost of that advice and representation. For the main part charges are on a “fixed fee” basis, meaning that you will know in advance what the cost will be BEFORE deciding whether to go ahead or not.

When divorcing couples think they are going to need the intervention of the courts to make orders over their finances or concerning the children, bear in mind NEW LEGISLATION which came into effect in April last year. This is the compulsory requirement that all people seeking to start family court proceedings about finances on divorce or children matters (note that exemptions do apply) must attend a family Mediation, Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) first. This means you now have to go through a process before being able to issue a court application, although the process itself is relatively straightforward. You can find more information on my website - www.thebarristerbroker.com.

If you or anyone you know is going through a divorce or non-married relationship breakup and are in dispute over family assets; house, car, money, etc., or arrangements over the the children and feel you need legal advice in order to move matters forward, before you do anything speak to me to see how I might be able to help you.

For a local, compassionate and professional service, contact me in confidence on 01732 866 562.

Remember, speaking to me costs nothing but I could end up saving you thousands!

In Spring our attention turns to the garden and extending our living space outside. With Bank Holidays coming, thoughts of BBQ and alfresco dining appeal to all - depending on the great British weather of course!

So here are some tips on keeping safe this BBQ season from JPro Services Ltd, the local experts in Fire Safety & Security.

Whilst clearing the shed think about general outdoor housekeeping. Remove piles of rubbish or garden waste that could dry over the summer becoming a source of ignition. If burning garden waste take care. You could be fined £5,000 if smoke is considered a danger to public health or allowed to drift across roads becoming a danger to traffic.

Always inform neighbours of your intention to have a bonfire. Legislation allows you to have a bonfire at any time of the day or week provided smoke or flames are not a ‘nuisance to others’ nearby. Do not leave fires unattended, and dampen down remaining embers with water when finished.

Be careful working with naked flames in your garden. Do not use accelerants to start a fire or BBQ. Locate away from properties, sheds, fences, or overhanging trees.

Over 2,000 people are admitted every year to A&E with BBQ related injuries. To keep safe follow this checklist:• Keep children and pets away from cooking

areas.• Never leave BBQ’s unattended.• Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for

emergencies.• Ensure the BBQ is cool before moving or

disposing of it.• If using a disposable BBQ ensure it has cooled

before binning it, pouring water over it to make sure it’s out.

• Do not dispose of hot ashes in dustbins or wheelie bins.

• With gas BBQ’s, if you suspect a leak brush soapy water around the joints and watch for bubbles - tighten to fix but do not overtighten.

• Always consider Carbon Monoxide especially when camping or in a confined area.

Inside the home - have you checked your smoke alarms recently? When was the last time you cleaned out your toaster? Burnt crumbs can catch light – take this opportunity to shake them out! Do you have a fire blanket for household kitchen or appliance fires? This is the quickest way to smother a fire on the kitchen hob or electrical items.

Going on holiday? What about home security? Move bins away from fences, walls or gates to limit access to your property. Consider installing motion sensor LED floodlights, a dummy bell box or CCTV cameras as deterrents, or a full intruder alarm system for peace of mind. New technology now allows you to monitor your house remotely via your mobile phone.

Finally, driving away over the bank holiday weekend? More than 28,000 car fires happen in the UK each year – a staggering 300 per day. The benefits of having a fire extinguisher in your vehicle should be obvious – and it’s something we can help with too. Call us for more information.
