e Dear Neighbours,

I’m sure you remember the story of my little cat Milo returning home after being missing for 11 months. I’ve received lovely messages from so many readers sharing their own stories of missing pets and how they returned home. Of course it’s always sad to hear of a missing pet who hasn’t yet returned home and I’m glad my own experience has given hope to some of you. Please do keep me posted.

Well, as usual it’s been a busy couple of months and just when I thought the town couldn’t get any better we had our first Edenbridge Motor Show on the 14th September. Not only was it a sunny day but it was jam packed down at Gabriels Farm where the show was held. There were so many amazing vehicles on display and the helicopter was flying around the entire time. Well done to Keith and Jennie Steptoe and the other Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce Members for putting on such a good show. I’ve been told that next year the event will be on 20th September so make a note in your diaries now for that one!

From a new event to one of the longest running events in town - the annual Bonfire Parade and Firework Extravaganza. It’s nearly time - Saturday 8th November. Don’t forget there will be road closures in place from 6pm onwards. Watch in delight as the procession sets off from Fircroft Way and makes it’s way through the High Street, finally settling on the Lingfield Road Recreation Ground where the unveiling of the celebrity guy will take place, followed by the firework extravaganza. The second time I ever visited Edenbridge was when the town was celebrating Bonfire Night and never before had I seen such a spectacle (you don’t get such things in London!) I just love it - the history, the atmosphere, the passion involved. It really is an amazing event and the Bonfire Society do a fantastic job year after year.

As well as that there’s also the big Christmas event to look forward to on Saturday 6th

December in the High Street from 2-6pm. This will have the usual stalls, fun fair, Santa’s Grotto and much more. The recent auction organised by the local Chamber of Commerce raised just over £2000 to go towards a new string of Christmas lights for the High Street. There’s also plenty of other things going on over the festive season and you can find the details on the calendar pages (18 and 22 in this issue).

In October the Edenbridge Directory celebrated it’s ninth birthday! I can’t believe this is now issue 73 and the magazine is still going strong. I can barely remember my career before

e becoming a publisher and certainly never expected to be running my own business by the time I turned 30! I have two advertisers who have been with me all this time as well - Sarah Medway Graphic Designer and Eden Clean Dry Cleaners. Why do they continue to advertise? Because it works of course. I do still receive the odd phone call from people wondering if they are the only reader of this magazine before deciding to advertise and I do chuckle to myself. Without the support of you, the readers of this magazine, I certainly wouldn’t be able to do this - thank you.

Life can be full of great opportunities and a few months ago I was offered the opportunity to co-present on The Women in Business Radio Show - a weekly show on Thursdays between 11am and 12noon. Although broadcast from a studio in Kent, the show can be heard all over the world as it’s only available to listen to via the internet. With a mixture of humour and useful business information it’s been well received by listeners, and it’s not just for women either. You can tune in at www.channelradio.co.uk and the beauty of internet radio is that you don’t need to listen live but can choose to do so at any time.

You’ll find another great crossword prize on offer - an oven clean worth up to £50 from new company, Southern Oven Services. If you want to be in with a chance to win then turn to page 50 and start solving those clues. A clean oven is a better performing oven - just what you need with Christmas around the corner.

I really am looking forward to Christmas with my friends and family this year. It will also be the second Christmas as a step-mum. Even though ‘my’ girls are 17 and 18 years old now I will still have fun decorating their bedrooms with fairy lights and making up stockings for them. I’m sure they’ll never get too old for that kind of fuss.

I hope you enjoy this issue and, as usual, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The next deadline for content and advertising requests is Friday 28th November for the January/February 2015 issue.

Wishing you all a wonderful festive season...

The friendly, local club for everyone in the heart of Edenbridge High Street.

The Edenbridge Club has a well deserved makeover With it’s history dating back to the early 1900s, indeed like some of it’s previous décor, The Edenbridge Club (previously known as the Edenbridge Mens’ Club) has undergone some much needed refurbishment and now enters a new era, providing modern facilities and FREE WiFi for it’s members.

Following extensive stripping and plastering in the downstairs bar area, the club has a whole new feel when you walk through the door. GOODBYE old drab walls and HELLO to new, bright, open plan space.

With membership currently just under 350, the popularity of the club is slowly building again as workers and residents in the area realise the value the club gives them.

“We deliver what our members want as much as possible, and within reason

of course”, says Club Treasurer David Putman, “there wouldn’t be a club without the support of our members.”

If you haven’t been to the club for a while or are new to the area, you’ll be most welcome to take a look around and be pleasantly surprised at the facilities on offer here. The club are also able to obtain a late bar licence - great when big sporting events are showing on the big screen outside of normal opening hours.

“We’re the only club in town with Big Gaming Machines which pay £250 and £500 jackpots,” says Club Secretary Derek Smith, “and our beer is the finest in town as we clean the pipes weekly.”

Membership to the club is only £10 per year / £5 for Senior Citizens.

THE CLUB LOOKS FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU SOON!

re appearances - Transforming the way we look Pt 2Here we are for part 2 of this series of features exploring the treatments provided by Aesthetic Practitioner Gillian Huntley, so again I find myself in her comfortable Chiselhurst Clinic, on her comfortable treatment couch waiting for the numbing cream to get to work...

In the last issue Gillian used her semi-permanent tattoo skills on me and I’m now the proud wearer of semi-

permanent eye liner. This time I am going to be zapped with her electrolysis machine to remove some clear moles from my face and neck as well as a few other lumps and bumps that have formed under my skin over the years.

Gillian started her beauty aesthetic business, appearances, in 1986 and whilst she mainly treats her clients in her home clinic in Chiselhurst, she has strong connections in Edenbridge through Options Beauty Salon on the High Street. She is fully qualified and fully certified and often receives recommendations from GPs (including Harley Street ones) because she has a very good reputation in her field.

There are many different types of treatments Gillian is able to carry out - skins peels, scar relaxation, specialist waxing, thread vein/pigmentation/skin tag removals and these are treatments can really transform people’s lives and boost their confidence.

More often then not we simply accept things that grow on our bodies over the years as we just assume they are there to stay and that is that. Following on from my first visit to Gillian she pointed out that she could easily remove the clear moles I have on my face and from that moment on I suddenly found myself looking at my face in a new way - the clear moles becoming

more noticeable and jumping out at me. I really had been looking forward to this appointment more than ever.

Prior to any procedure, Gillian will go over everything in detail as to what the treatment will involve so you know exactly what will happen. She is extremely good at putting her clients’ at ease before any treatment starts so you have nothing to worry about.

The mole removal process was similar to having semi-permanent treatment - the areas to be treated had numbing cream applied to reduce any pain which may be caused during the process. If my moles had been coloured then Gillian would have required a Doctor’s permission before starting the treatment. She will also send her patients to see a Doctor if she thinks there is something that could potentially cause problems to her clients’ health.

Picture 1 below shows the largest of the clear moles she will be removing from my face. Once the cream had taken effect Gillian could begin my treatment. This time by using electrolysis which uses electricity to direct heat to the affected areas in a very accurate procedure. There are a number of different size probes available for this treatment and Gillian will select the most appropriate size for the area

to be treated. All her equipment is sterile and she will always show the patient the pack containing the probe before opening it for use.

The larger the defect, the longer it takes to treat but as you can see in Pic 2, I was still able to keep smiling throughout the procedure. As with the semi-permanent treatments you can

feel a slight discomfort but there is no real pain to be felt.

After my treatment (Pic 3) my face did come up in blotches and Gillian pointed out that the quicker you come up in blotches, the quicker they will disappear. She will always run through the aftercare, providing leaflets with detailed information and the necessary creams and gels to use on the treated areas. The following day

scabs began to appear over my face and neck but this is all part of the healing process which takes between 2-5 days. You can wear mineral make-up if you take the relevant precautions but I chose to go without for the following week to ensure the healing process went smoothly, only wearing

my favourite lippy to detract from the scabs.

Skin tags are removed in just the same way and even my husband, Russell Burton-Lawrence, went under the probe of Gillian to have a large tag removed from the side of his eye. He has been delighted with the result. It’s not just for women!

What Gillian can do with her special equipment and skills is really quite incredible and you’ll find plenty of testimonials on her website about the difference she has made to her clients.

Some of the other deformities she can remove are: warts red veins cholesterol patches (xanthelasma)

So if you have something on your skin that you no longer wish to live with, you don’t have to anymore. Gillian is more than happy to see you for a consultation

To find out more about these or other treatments, or to book an appointment with Gillian you can contact her on 07711 067 789 or email [email protected]. Are you worried about the cost of using solicitors?

Without exception my clients have benefited by coming to me. I have helped people in and around the area significantly reduce their legal costs by arranging for them to be represented directly by a Barrister. Cases have included divorce and matrimonial finance, contact and residence of children, contractual disputes and contesting wills.

Speaking to me costs nothing but I could end up saving you thousands!

re Sarah Medway - Graphic DesignerFor those of you who have been reading this magazine over the years you should recognise the name Sarah Medway, as she has been advertising

under her name for 9 years in this magazine so to mark the occasion it’s about time you found out a bit more about what she does.

Sarah became a graphic designer after finishing her degree at Ravensbourne Art College. She is a multi disciplined designer and from 1995 added

website design to her skill set (I didn’t even realise they had websites then!).

Sarah is just as passionate about her clients as she is about the work she produces for them. She mainly works with small to medium sized businesses, helping with general graphic design and those looking to refresh their corporate image or who are starting up and looking to develop a brand. Corporate branding and identity are her speciality and she can cover all elements of branding either in digital or print formats.

One of the things she loves most about her work is being able to get involved in all sorts of business, finding out a lot about what companies and people do for a living. One of her local clients, Marco (Enterprise Way) design, manufacture, install and maintain hardware and software that makes factories and pack houses more productive and profitable. “It’s fascinating to learn about things I never thought of until I am hired to work for a business, then understand and translate that into the entire essence of branding - the successful connection between company and customer.” she told me.

Much of her work doesn’t stop with simply creating a logo for a business, this is often just

the beginning in many cases, of building a long-term relationship with her clients. Once you have the initial identity then the brand is built around it. From stationery, brochures, leaflets, advertising and web sites, Sarah can produce it all.

You can find many examples of her work on her website at www.smedway.co.uk. Of course being a local business she is easily accessible to her clients.

One of the other things that Sarah has become well-known for in the local area is her landscape photography of scenes around the Eden Valley. At either dawn or dusk she leaves the office with camera in hand and makes her way to some of our favourite beauty spots. It’s one of the reasons why she loves living in Edenbridge so much and has been here since 1993 - being so close to such beautiful countryside.

She is Chairman of the local group ‘Eden Valley Artists’ (EVA) and helps organise some of the events they put on throughout the year. Oh yes, their logo is just another one of her creations. You’ll also find her at the EVA Craft Fair on 15th November (details on page 18).

If you would like to speak to Sarah about your corporate identity/brand or require her graphic design services for your business, you can contact her on 01732 863 179 or via email at [email protected] or check out her website at www.smedway.co.uk.

re Something Special in the heart of our High Street

Something Special has become a household name in Edenbridge over the years as THE place to go to for cards and gifts, first opening it’s doors on the High Street in October 1999.

The shop is owned and run by Linda Madagan who deals with all the administration side of the business, and Karen Ebers who is the product lady. Their support team, a lovely group of local ladies, have been working at the shop for years and have all become familiar faces to regular shoppers.

Difficult to believe but when Something Special first came about in the 1970s, the concept of having a combined card and gift shop was unique and Karen’s father, David Brockdorff, was the man who came up with the idea. The original branch first opened in St. Helier, Jersey, in the 1970s with a second branch opening in Oxted in 1994. The Edenbridge shop now remains the only branch of Something Special.

Product buyer Karen is constantly on the look out for new lines that fit with the current offering. It’s a big industry and Karen regularly attends trade fairs, supplier open days, trade association events, reads all the trade publications and researches on the internet as well as networking with other product buyers to make sure she’s one step ahead of the competition.

Karen is also on the panel of judges for both the card industry’s annual awards, The Henries, and the Gift of the Year annual awards. She is a familiar face in the trade industry publications, regularly being interviewed for articles. As well as all that, she is also part of a buyers’ panel for card publishers wishing to connect with their market and provides advice on consumer requirements.

“Being a judge has opened up another side to the industry for me,” said Karen, “It’s really widened my horizons and I get to see what is going on in the whole world of retailing, not just in Edenbridge.”

It’s no wonder Something Special remains an award winning shop with all the research and expertise behind the products sold there, as well as the excellent customer service you receive when you visit the shop.

Their range of glassware, china, photo frames, leather and more are constantly changing. They have gift ranges for men as well as women. They sell everything for weddings and parties so make Something Special your first stop this Christmas and keep it local. What’s more, as they are part of the Eden Valley Loyalty Card Scheme you’ll also get a stamp for each £10 you spend.

Something Special, 62 High Street, Edenbridge, TN8 5AJ. Telephone 01732 867 299. You can also find them on facebook and twitter to get all the latest updates.

re The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs The last couple of months have flown by and Edenbridge life is keeping me busy as usual. I enjoyed a fun quiz night at

the WI Hall and my team came 4th! A definite improvement on last year. For the second year running I also entered the Titsey Trail 10K although disappointing to admit I was beaten by my wife by just 5 seconds!

The vast majority of enquiries I receive following these articles are from people either about to, or already

in the process of going through a divorce. I recently read a statistic that almost 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Perhaps this is because there isn’t any stigma attached with being divorced as there once used to be.

My first marriage lasted 12 years which some consider pretty good going. Casting my mind back to when I knew my marriage had realistically come to the end of the road, I recall how incredibly difficult it was to pluck up the courage to discuss this with my wife. Not only was there the two of us to consider but also parents, friends, and in our case two young children. I remember feeling shame and guilt of a failed marriage and the dread of having to tell people. That’s a big reason I suspect why many people decide to stay in an unhappy relationship to avoid putting themselves through that pain.

Well, take it from me that despite those difficult initial months, taking the decision to separate and get divorced worked out to be one of the best things I ever did. Not just for me but for my ex-wife AND my children. Life does get better and you become happy again. Doesn’t that sound great? You find your new found

happiness also rubs off onto other people around you. My relationship with my children improved immensely even though they lived with their mum. Having them every other weekend meant I made sure we had quality time together. I even learned to cook... but that is another story.

As one gentleman told me after we had spoken on the phone recently, I should clearly state in these articles - “Before you consider anything, consider this FIRST!”. He was gutted he hadn’t known about my service a year ago when his divorce proceedings started.

So, if you or someone you know is going through divorce or separation or having issues over the contact or residence of their children, consider this first. It costs nothing to speak to me but I could save you a lot of anxiety, time and money by providing you with the route to the most expert and cost-effective legal option available - straight to a Barrister. They are the legal experts and will give you no-nonsense, comprehensive advice on how to deal with your situation quickly and cost-effectively. Unlike solicitors who usually charge by the hour, using a Barrister via my service will mean, for the main part, paying a “fixed fee” for the work they undertake so you know in advance what it is going to cost before you commit yourself.

This is the Christmas edition of this magazine. January, being the start of a New Year usually means an influx in divorce petitions being issued - New Year, New Start, New Life! Make my number the first number you call.

Remember, it costs nothing to speak to me but I could end up saving you thousands! Call me in confidence on 01732 866 562.
