Environmentally sound and sustainable development is central to the EBRD’s man-date. Our aim is to ensure that all projects we finance are socially and environmentally sustainable, and respect the rights of local communities.

In line with this policy, the EBRD strives to minimise the environmental impacts of its Annual Meetings such as by waste recycling or sourcing environmentally-friendly products.

A special emphasis is put on reducing the carbon footprint of the event which, as with every event, is inevitably linked to the release of greenhouse gas emissions. These may result from sources such as participants’ travels, energy consumption at the venue, accommodation, or transportation. The carbon footprint of this year’s event is expected to equal 3,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e).

As part of our commitment, the Bank aims to reduce avoidable carbon emissions and seeks to compensate unavoidable emissions by supporting international climate protection projects.

The EBRD is actively looking for opportunities to minimise the carbon footprint of its events through careful planning. This includes, for example, the decision to use digital materials instead of printed copies of reports and brochures, and to offer a free shuttle service between Amman airport, a selection of hotels and the convention centre.

Opportunities to reduce emissions, however, are limited due to the international nature of the event. The majority of emissions (more than 90 per cent) are due to international travel (flights). As in the previous year, First Climate supports the EBRD with this year’s Carbon Neutral Initiative.

First Climate calculated the ex-ante carbon footprint for this year’s Annual Meeting, using the principles and methods of the Green-house Gas Protocol. This initial calculation was used to contract an equivalent amount of emission reductions in the form of carbon credits. Another carbon footprint calculation will be performed follo-wing the event to verify that a sufficient amount of offsets has been purchased and therefore confirm that this year’s Annual Meeting in Jordan was indeed carbon neutral.

Our Annual Meeting is a carbon-neutral event

Morocco Khalladi Wind Farm

The unavoidable emissions from this year’s Annual Meeting will be offset by purchasing carbon credits from the Khalladi Wind Farm in Morocco, an outstanding renewable energy project that has been part-financed by EBRD.

This greenfield wind farm is located along the Mediterranean coast, just east of the city of Tan-ger. With stable wind conditions, the site is exceptionally well-suited for the production of rene-wable energy. The project is composed of 40 wind turbines totalling a generation capacity of 120MW. It is among the first privately developed wind power projects in Morocco and delivers most of the energy produced to corporate buyers.

About 80% of the annual power produced by this Gold Standard and CDM certified project goes to three large corporate energy buyers, that have signed long-term power purchase agreements with the project owners for sourcing clean electricity. The Khalladi Wind Farm started generating electricity in December 2017. Thus, by utilising emission reductions from the project to compensate for the emissions of this year’s Annual Meeting, EBRD will be the first buyer of carbon credits issued by the project.

Morocco Khalladi Wind Farm

Morocco

One of the first of its kind, this forward-thinking renewables project expedites sustainable de-velopment in Morocco and generates a multitude of co-benefits, which are supportive of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Wind power is a zero-emission source of energy. Khalladi will generate more than 300 Gigawatt hours of clean electricity per year.

As one of the first private wind power projects in Morocco, the Khalladi project contributes to the development of the renewables sector in the country, and supports domestic policy goals to promote green energy production.

The project activity helps to enhan-ce economic development by crea-ting new employment opportunities. It also supports local industries by providing clean electricity at compe-titive prices.

The project improves local air and water quality by reducing other pollutants, such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and soot, which are inevitably linked to fossil-fuelled power generation.
