I am the middle child of six, so I had this vision of having a houseful of my own to raise. I was deter- mined to give our daughter Bekah a brother or sister, but my body was betraying me at every bend. Instead of receiving a bundle of joy to hold in my arms, I’d receive a grief packet from a well -meaning hospital chaplain. Instead of receiving warm wishes from friends and family, I’d receive looks of pity and awkward conversations - after all, what does one say - sorry for your loss - again - and again. Kind of gets old after the third or fourth time, let alone the seventh or eighth. Somewhere in the midst of all of this, I knew deep down that my doctor was right, that I needed to let go. And so, on a very cold and dreary day in early January, my husband and I read some scriptures, cried some tears and gave our wish for another child over to the Lord. We let go. A funny thing happens when you let go of something you’ve been clinging on to so tightly for so long - you have to release your grasp on it - you have to open your fingers, one-by-painful-one, and when you do, your hands are now open and free to receive something else. Who knew? My oldest child, now six, was visited by the Make a Wish foundation that June. Her first wish was for a baby sister. Out of the mouths of babes. She was pressed to make another wish and sighed as only a six year old can, saying, “I guess if I can’t have a sister, meeting a princess would be nice.” 4th of July weekend in small towns is a big deal and ours is no exception. We were eating at the local restaurant in town when the juvenile judge approached our table. “Would you and Jeff be interested in adopting”? I just about fell out of the booth. YES! No questions asked. YES! Our six year old just looked at me and smiled. Could it be this simple? Well, yes and no. We met the young birthmother at our home a week later. She was in no position to care for another child and was eager to see that this girl she carried was adopted into a good home. There were a lot of legal hoops to go through, and there were some scary times in the process, when the birthmother disappeared for a few weeks and we thought she changed her mind. But then on a warm clear Thursday night in mid-September, I received a phone call. “Could you come to the hospital? I think I’m in labor.” Driving as quickly as I dared, I arrived at the hospital just as she was settled in to a room and was pre- pared for a long wait. This was not to be so. Just 2 short hours later, Hannah Marie was born and I received her into my arms. Her birthmother did not want to hold her and left the hospital in the morning. I wouldn’t see her again until the following Monday in court when she went through what is known as the right of sur- render. She was so brave. I cried through it all. She was letting go and entrusting me to receive this pre- cious gift. Irony of ironies - you do the math. Right around the time we went through the painful process of let- ting go in January, Hannah was in the process of being conceived. It was only in the process of letting go that we were able to receive. May this story of our family’s beginnings give a brief picture of part of our life. I look forward in faith to sharing more in the future. Pastor Patti

Romans 8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who

are called according to his purpose.”

As we traverse the weeks from Mothers Day to Fathers Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share a bit of my journey into motherhood. I am the middle child of six, so I had this vision of having a houseful of my own to raise. I was deter-mined to give our daughter Bekah a brother or sister, but my body was betraying me at every bend. Instead of receiving a bundle of joy to hold in my arms, I’d receive a grief packet from a well-meaning hospital chaplain. OWLS UPCOMING EVENT –TUESDAY JUNE 13, 2017 How long have you lived in Ohio? In Grove City? There are so many things to see and do around here but maybe there is one very special place you haven’t visited or maybe it’s been a while since you have visited. I’m talking about the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden or sometimes referred to as “The People’s House”. It is a unique and historic home that represents Ohio to a diverse range of visi-tors. It stands as a symbol of Ohio’s historic significance in our nation’s narrative, as well as a living showcase of our state’s artistry, culture, industry and landscape. It was built in 1925 as a private home for local businessman Malcolm Jeffrey. After being a part of the Jeffrey Family for many years, it was donat-ed to the state of Ohio to be used as an executive residence. We hope you join us to hear “the rest of the story”. There are many pieces of artwork, furniture and additional items of note that demonstrate Ohio’s rich history, industry and craftmanship that will be shared during our private tour.

The State of Ohio has a few guidelines for anyone entering the Mansion so please pay attention to in-structions. We must provide a list of attendees one week ahead so you MUST sign up no later than June 5th. If you are considering going but not positive, please go ahead and sign up. We can remove your name but cannot add it later. Everyone MUST provide photo ID for admittance. No purses or backpacks are permitted.

It is very important you arrive at the church no later than 9:15 am on Tuesday, June 13th. We will have a brief meeting and set up rides for carpooling. After the tour we would like to lunch together but we will have menus for 2 restaurants close by – Panera and Block’s Bagels, Bakery and Deli. Details will be ex-plained before we leave the church.

CALLING ALL OWLS! INVITATION TO JOIN THE OWLS Have you retired recently? Are you looking for a club, group, etc. to get involved in to share your love of God? The Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors at St. John’s would like to invite all members to join the fun and share the Christian fellowship at our monthly meetings. An OWL might be a little older in age but we are very young at heart. There isn’t an age re-quirement but you must be old enough to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of others from St. John’s. We are a very active group that meets the third Friday of every month for either a potluck lunch at the church or an outing to visit different interests around the area.

OWLS SPECIAL EVENT—JUNE 7, 2017 THE OLDER WISER LUTHERANS (OWLS) have been invited to The Academy once again this year to visit the high school youth as they are developing their faith skills at Heartland Confer-ence and Retreat Center on Wednesday, June 7th. It’s only a 45 minute drive up Route 71. Come and enjoy lunch, courtesy of St. John’s youth who are excited to faith web with us. Enjoy a deli-cious meal, good conversation and share stories. Over the years this has been a highlight for adults and youth alike. We will meet at church at 10:30am to carpool. We will finish up our visit by 2:00pm and be home by 3:00pm. Please use the salmon insert to sign up or call Bonnie Swanson (614-875-1392) by May 30th.

BEACONS and QUILTERS NEWS

The chief objective of the LSS Auxiliaries, known as the Beacons, is Christian action through love and concern. We try to help the less for-tunate by showing God’s love and our understanding of their situations. We aid in helping to feed the hungry, clothe the needy and provide safe shelter for the homeless and victims of domestic violence. Choices, the shelter for victims of domestic violence, has many top

needs. Usually, the victims of domestic violence and their children and sometimes pets, leave their homes with few of their necessities. They leave quickly and cannot manage box-es, bags or luggage. Sometimes, they leave in the middle of the night. Some of top needs of Choices are the following: PULL UP diapers (large sizes), towels, women’s deodorant, women’s new underwear (all sizes), feminine hygiene products, and bedding (twin sheets, blankets and new pillows). Gift cards from grocery stores, gas stations, Lowes/Home De-pot, COTA daily bus passes, fast food restaurants, Wal-Mart, Meijer, Kohl’s, and Target are always appreciated. Many food products are on their top needs list. They need: canned fruit and vegetable, canned meats, chunky soups, snacks (especially kid-friendly snacks), juices, pasta sauce and sauce mixes, pasta of various shapes and sizes, sugar, coffee, cof-fee creamer and condiments. Please check the expiration dates. Expired food cannot be used. Choices cannot accept car seats, furniture, mattresses, used clothing or used toilet-ries. Please place your donations in the Beacons cabinet in the Link. Please write “Choices” on your donations. Thank you for caring. The Beacons collect and recycle just about anything except decorative pieces and large, heavy items. We sort and donate used clothing. The card fronts are given to the Cancer Thrift Store on Stringtown. The cancelled stamps go to the Wounded Soldier project at two military hospitals in Virginia. Some of the towels, wrapped soap, cat litter buckets, used Bi-bles and other hygiene products go to LSS Disaster Services. Place your donation in the Beacons cabinet in the Link. Please write “Disaster Services” on your donations. Thank you for your donations. The Beacons and Quilters welcome visitors. The Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9am to 2pm in rooms 103-104. The Beacons meet with the Quilters on the third Tuesday to sort and bag clothes, cut and sort labels and stamps, and help with projects. You may cut squares, arrange the squares, tie knots or pin a hem. We always need someone to sort the donated material and items. All materials are provided. We bring a packed lunch. At the Beacons’ meeting, we take offerings to help support the food pantries and our general fund. Lord, give me the Christian love and understanding to not judge others. Amen.

Bed Brigade --- A Calling For The Summer Bed Brigade continues our bed deliveries to Central Ohio. We’ve delivered over 1500 beds since inception 4 years ago and 127 beds this year so far. We have a couple significant opportunities for volunteers to build and deliver beds in June and July. ACTS in Grove City June 10 and YouthWorks for 12 separate service days within a 5 wk span. These combined with some of our regular deliveries will allow us to deliver close to 180 beds just within those two

months. That is 180 kids (w/handful of adults) that can receive a tangible expression of God’s love and presence in their lives. Our delivery teams also go into their homes to set up the beds for them. We pro-vide sheets, blankets, pillows, bibles, prayer cloths, stuffed animals and a prayer with the family.

THE DILEMMA… we don’t currently have the funds to make it beyond 2 more months of our regular ac-tivities - much less the ability to take on a bigger initiative like this. We need a significant inpouring of fi-nancial support to allow us to proceed. Bed Brigade only uses the money that is in our account, given for the purpose of this ministry.

I believe God is calling us to meet this opportunity. Please prayerfully consider giving your best gift to Bed Brigade. We are in need of $10,000 just to meet these June and July plans. Outside of June and July we have been tracking at spending $2200/mo so ideally we would receive enough to keep us busy beyond July as well. Donations can be sent to the church office, given online at stjohnsgc.org, or placed in an of-fering envelope… just indicated the donation is for Bed Brigade. Thank you for participating in this ministry…The BED BRIGADE

Upon meeting Caren for the first time, she was a quiet and small 9 year old girl who often kept her head down after you made eye contact with her. She still smiled and played games, and knowing she's come a long way since her first year at Rancho Genesis summer camp, I knew I wanted to be gentle approaching her. On Monday I could tell she felt uncomfortable holding my hand; she would let go quickly and again, look to the ground. Tuesday at Vacation Bible School, she

sat with the friends who came with her to camp, and refused any help during a paper maché project. I thought we were making headway when I saw her enjoying the beach on Wednesday, but when I would come near to play with her in the sand, she kept running away. Campfire that night, she said her favor-ite part of the day was playing with her 'amiga!' That's Me! I was her Amiga!!! Okay so we're getting somewhere, whew! At this point I said a prayer: “Lord help me be patient. Patient for You to work in her. Patient like You've been with me in my life. Lord, be her Shepherd, letting her know I'm a safe haven. Give me the words and the actions to show Your love to Caren.” Our God is so good! Let me preface this by saying that Caren started coming to camp afraid of getting close to water and showing hesitance walking across shallow creeks. Thursday we went to a pool where I (hesitantly) asked her to go into the deep part, motioning how I would hold onto her and keep her safe. She agreed and we had a blast in the deep pool, creating a whirlpool with the other niños and amigos. Get this, on Friday we went to an-other pool and she asked me to take her down the slide near the deep end. How exciting was that! She was picking up hair ties from the bottom of the pool, and waving to me under the water. The day went by quickly, and Saturday we were all scheduled to leave camp and say our 'God byes.' A concert was given by all the niños to us amigos as the kids sang a beautiful song of 'how great to have a friend like you who doesn't hide their light in a drawer,' and 'we'll always be friends you and I. Time and distance, nothing will change.' As they sang the song, I kept noticing Caren. She sang the song without a tear, but never took her eyes off me. It was then I understood God was giving me that opportunity to practice patience in His story. Though she didn't respond to me the way I'm used to with children, she still saw me, and she just needed my presence. She needed me there to watch her sing, to watch her grow, to applaud her when she went down the slide, to help her dig a big sand hole, to be consistent, and never cease loving her. My prayer was answered more than I had even asked. He needed me to be His hands and feet. Not my own, but His. God is our backbone, applauding us in the good, always loving, watching us grow, and willing to say 'yes, I will hold you when you are afraid, and I will wait for you con-sistently.' -Cassaundra Wood

MEXICO MUSINGS

Suitcase Sunday for Missions – Sunday, June 11th June 11th is our annual Suitcase Sunday for Missions. As you know, prices continue to rise and sending the arms and feet of Jesus around the world has become more expensive! To aid us in this effort, we are asking that you prayerful-ly consider helping us in one or more of many ways. Such as:

1. Pray, pray, and pray some more! 2. Purchase Walmart Gift Cards (which can also benefit the Youth Program through Scrip!) that can be used to

buy VBS supplies and gifts for the children. 3. Drop some change, a dollar or more in the suitcase to offset the cost of the mission. 4. Consider helping to sponsor one of the missionaries through a check made out to St. John’s Church with Mexico or General Missions in the memo line. These can be dropped in the suitcase on Suitcase Sunday or in

the offering plate anytime! Oh, yes, and pray, pray, pray!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping us to share God’s love with our brothers and sisters in Christ!

The Mexico Mission Family:

Diana Imbrock, Jill Althoff, Emily Briggeman, Joy Easterday, Karl Eiginger, Gini Lipp, Mikey Morris, Brandon Rogers, Jacob Stuckert, Chelsea Smith, and Eli Wanner.

The Rodgers family thanks St. John’s for the gift card they were given during the past holiday season. It was very much appreciated. Dresses for Divas sent their note of appreciation for the use of the building for their event in March. They were able to outfit 28 young ladies for their high school proms. The Imbrock Family would like to extend our gratitude to all for the outpour-ing of prayers, cards, and love we experienced during the passing of Dennis’ mother, Hildegard. We were again reminded of how beautiful and caring our St. John’s family is to us. Thank you so much for wrapping His arms around us at this difficult time.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Thomas and Jeanne Phillips; Christopher Phillips; Ty and Ericka Vanderwerf and Owen; Denise Reynard and sons, Scott and Zachary; Jeff and Brenda Schultz; Sally Wei-senberger; Mike and Deb Ernst; and Kathleen Denson.

The homeschool band director is in of need of band in-struments for students who cannot afford to buy or rent an instrument. If you have an instrument sitting in a clos-et basement or attic that you haven’t played for years and don’t plan to play again, bring them to Mike Esposito in the church office. We will make sure they are given to a youth who will put them to good use!
