“‘STOP! In the name of points! before you break my heart, think it over!”

This is a quote from the ”Points Police” which include Maria Armaganian, Kristin Wolmack, and Maddy Miles. The A+ Re-wards Program at Steeplegate Mall points works like this: if you turn in a receipt from the Steeplegate Mall, you earn BGS 60 points! The school with the most points by April wins $2,000! You can turn receipts (or copies of receipts) into the mailbox

in the BGS library or at the office at the Stee-plegate Mall. We have Points Police to help people remember to turn in their receipts.

So far, BGS is in first place so keep sending receipts to keep it that way! Remember, the due date is April! And if you take a picture with Santa at the Steeplegate Mall in December, you earn BGS extra points! A bunch of teachers and staff from BGS took a picture with Santa at the mall to earn points for our school. But watch out for Prospect Mountain High, they’re in second place!

Who knows what the Bob Silva award is? Let me tell you. We have had a couple of BGS staff get this award. Mrs. Kenny got it this year and Mrs. Sawyer got it two years ago. It was named after Bob Silva who was the superintendent of schools. He came up with the award. He wanted a way to recognize staff of the Concord school district. You have to be nominated. The committee looks over the nominees and they vote. I interviewed Mrs. Kenny to find out more about the award. Mrs. Kenny works with students who are learning english.

Mrs. Kenny Gets the Bob Silva Award

The Concord School District Holiday Food Drive is in full force. I interviewed Mrs. Lauze about the food drive.

Why did you start the food drive? The Concord School District has a long tradition of supporting the Capital re-gion Food Program. At BGS our December themes for the month are caring and compassion which led to our student challenge to give generously.

When did the holiday food drive start? I don’t know the exact date the food drive started but our school has taken an active role in the last 10 years. This year our PTA combined with Mill Brook PTA for a movie night and encouraged students to bring food item donations instead of charging an ad-mission fee. It is wonderful to see our whole school com-munity get behind this effort to support our neighbors.

How many items of food do we usually collect at BGS? We generally donate over 1,000 items each year. The students from Rundlett Mid-dle School come to make all the pick-ups with Mr. Peter Trott and they are always amazed at our efforts.

When does the food drive end? This year the final day to make donations will be Tuesday December 17th by 8:00 AM.

How does the food get deliv-ered? Mr. Peter Trott from the Concord School District Transportation Department organizes and delivers our donations.

Is there going to be a reward for the classroom who brings the most food? Yes there will be a reward for the class that collects the most items. We are planning a cookie decorating party!!!

Q: Who is giving out the fitness awards?

A: Mr. Zeras (Mr. Z, our Gym teacher).

Q: What is a fitness award?A: A fitness award is given

to students who earn excellent fitness scores on all of the fitness tests we do. All five categories are required to get the award. The five categories are: one-mile run, sit-and-reach, shuttle run, pull-ups, and sit-ups. Many students get one or two areas but the award is only for the students who get all five areas.

Q: Where do they get handed out?

A: The gym during all school meetings.

Q: When will they be handed out?

A: They are handed out in December and June.

Q: Why are there fitness awards?

A: Phys Ed is a class and the fitness testing is a way to assess and see how you are doing. It is good information for the teacher. The awards are simply a way to celebrate the students who have done extremely well on all tests.

Q: How do you get a fitness award?

A: You need to reach the 85th percentile, which means the top 15 percent of all scores in each category or test. Standards are set by a national organization.

Q: Do other schools in the district have fitness awards?

A. Other schools do fitness testing but we are the only school to give out fitness awards. When I was a kid in Concord, all schools did it and I believe it is worth celebrating.

Q: About how many students are going to get them?

A: At Broken Ground we usually have 30 students get the award in the fall and 40 in the spring. When I first started teaching we had only 2 students get the award all year. The most ever was one spring we had 63 kids get the award. Those kids are currently in highschool now.

Q: What do the awards look like?

A: They are a certificate that is signed by the Principal and the Phys Ed Teacher. I think they are very nice.

Q: Do they get posted?A: Yes, on bulletin boards on

both sides on the gym

Teachers & Staff

Ms. Arnold is a great teacher that is new to BGS. Ms. Arnold is the new 3rd grade teacher and she’s Mrs. Arnold’s daughter. Because Mrs. Arnold has worked at BGS for a long time Ms. Arnold already knew many of the teachers. Ms. Arnold taught at a different school but she wasn’t a third grade teacher. She was a first grade teacher at Deerfield Community School. Ms. Arnold loves her new job and the teachers at BGS. She also thinks that BGS is a good school for kids and that kids have fun and help each other. If you are in Ms. Arnold class then you are lucky because you have a teacher that is new to BGS and is new to be the third grade. Hope you have an awesome and sweet year with Ms. Arnold.

read, love books and realize all the cool stuff you can get from reading books.

Q: Did you go to school at BGS? If you did not, did you want to?

A: I went to Conant School, which is called Abbott Downing now. I loved my school and all of my friends, but maybe if I had known what a cool place it was I would have wanted to! When I got to Rundlett I made a lot of friends who went to BGS.

Getting to Know Miss. Arnold

Ms.Gillam is our new media technology specialist. She loves working with students, teachers, and technology.

Ms. Gillam wishes there was more time in the day. She spends most of her time between Mill Brook and BGS.

She is here the whole school day. Sometimes she gets here at 7:15 and leaves at 3:30 - 4:00.

Ms. Gillam expects kids to have fun and love tech this year. Her favorite app is the Notability app; it lets you take notes and record your voice. She usually updates ipads, and when that’s done she wants to show kids how to use them. She doesn’t know how much all of the new ipads cost but she knows it must be a lot. Each time Ms. Gillam teaches she tries to use the smartboard. Welcome to BGS Ms. Gillam!

How much money would you spend for 1 ticket to a baseball game? $100, $500, $1,000? How about $12,000 for one ticket to a baseball game? At Fenway Park, in Boston, MA, some people paid up to $12,000 to watch the Red Sox win the 2013 World Series.

On October 30, 2013, the average ticket price to watch Game 6 of the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals was $2,056. This was the first time that the Red Sox clinched (won) the final game when it was in Boston. Many people wanted to be there to join in the celebration for the World Champions.

The Red Sox beat the Cardi-nals, 4 games to 2 in the Se-ries due, in large part, to some great pitching and clutch hit-ting. The score of the final game was a 6 - 1 blowout, al-lowing the packed crowd to start celebrating early.

BGS celebrated by wearing Red Sox clothing. My teacher, Ms. Wilke watched the game and was very excited when the Red Sox won. Another friend, whose name is Nick Mcgrath, also watched the game. I asked him how he celebrated the victory and he said he started shouting with excitement.

I know some people who went through Boston and saw the Boston Red Sox parade.

My dad fell asleep when the score was 6-0 knowing that the Red Sox would win. His prediction was right. My fam-ily celebrated very well with cake, because it was my moth-ers birthday when they won!

Tom BradyBy Aidan P. Gleason

Tom brady is an honorable man but sometimes his anger boils over. Let’s start with some honorable things. He won AFC offensive player of the year three times and won NFL player of the year two times. Now that’s something to look up to. I wonder why he chose Football?

Now let’s start with when his anger boils over. When the Pats played the Baltimore Ra-vens and a flag was called, the

refs ended the game[there was a very short amount of time left] and Brady got so mad he swore at the refs. Another time, Brady slid to avoid a tackle from the Denver Broncos linebacker but with his right foot forward so the linebacker would run into his spiked cleat. Brady was fined $10,000- thats a lot of money. I believe that Brady is a good man. What do you think?

Have you ever played 4-square? Or do you need a reason too? Oh booooy do we have a reason for you. Or should we say reasons...

We want to shout out a person who gave a great an-swer to a question we asked. Our friend Brady Rice said: “4-square is a fun opportu-nity to hang out with friends”. Here are some majority counts of things about 4- Square:

Our first one is that most people like to play at the red squares. Lots of people like to play with friends AND “enemies”. People think the game is fun!!! Lets ask you the 4-square questions we asked the people we interviewed. Why do you play? Who do you play with? When do you play?

The 4-Square TimesBy Lucas Puopolo & Michael Evans

Pass the Ball and Stop ArguingBy MaryRose Wainaina

4 square is one of the schools most favorite games to play.

But as you can see, it’s the fifth graders last year, and the people who play four square are trying to get in as many times as we can. But the peo-ple in 4th grade are taking so long to figure out who to pass to. Which is pretty annoying, but you get used to it. But the real problem is the arguing! In my opinion the most an-noying argument is when a

person is out, but they’re not getting out of the square, and they know they’re out! For no apparent reason, they have to start a fight which involves the teacher, it’s like they want to start another world war. Like really?!

I don’t know about you guys but sometimes I feel like I’m gonna cry! Even though 4 square is great and everything, that’s a problem we need to fix. And I mean quickly!

WritingA+ B+ Twins By Reilly Carroll and Catie Gaudette

Rosie and Bobby were twins, They were so twin like that you could only tell them apart by their hair and clothes. That was until middle school...

Everyone knows that that’s when letter grades start. Well once school started up again, Rosie usually aced every test with an A+. But Bobby not so much. He was a great student but he never could get even one A. He usually got a B+. Awesome, right? Wrong! Bobby wanted to be an overachiever just like his sister . His only problem was that once homework was done, he would rather pick up an XBox controller than study. Oh how that affected him but he didn’t seem to notice. Rosie tried to help her brother with flash cards and stuff but nothing seemed to take. By the next test he still had a B+ in his hand. That pushed Bobby over the edge. He did something

he wished he’d never do. He went to this kid who was said to have all answers to every test, Dylan…

“Hey Dylan”, Bobby whispered“What?” Dylan said back. “Bug…” Bobby said.Dylan gave him a “Where’s

the money?” kinda look. Bobby handed over $5 and grabbed the answers from Dylan’s hand. Dylan put his finger over his pursed lips and let out a quiet “ shhhh”. Bobby watched Dylan walk away. The next test Bobby did even better than Rosie had ever done, an A+++ .

“Oh my”, Rosie had said.Bobby had just smiled. But

soon pressure got to Bobby. Those “congratulations”, they hadn’t been for working hard, they had been for cheating. That night he snapped at dinner.

“Wow Bobby I’m so proud of you” , Bobby’s mother said. “Mom…” said Bobby, “ I

DIDN’T EARN THAT A+++!!” “Huh Bobby , why you march

up stairs, write your teacher an apology letter young man”, his mother yelled. She seemed shocked, like she could just barely talk.

The next morning Bobby was told by his father that he had done the right thing by being honest and telling them. He was also told that he should have never cheated in the 1st place.

That morning Bobby had to face his teacher and explain that he wanted an F- on the next re-port card for this subject. His teacher had accepted the apology and from then on kept a close eye on Bobby at testing times. To this day Bobby still has never even thought of the word Cheat! He only thought honest B was better than a cheated A+.
