Regular men doing regular jobs ... and then ...

As we begin to form the team for KAIROS 15 at Sussex II StatePrison, I am reminded of John 1:43-51.

Jesus "found" Philip on his way to Galilee and said simply, "Follow me". Philip recruited his buddy,Nathanael, saying, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote,Jesus, son of Joseph of Nazareth." When Nathanael expressed a measure of doubt Philip said,"Come and see," and off they went.

I think about those two men, Philip and Nathanael, and how their lives were changed that day. Wenever hear any more about Philip in the synoptic gospels, but he is mentioned in the gospel ofJohn. He was from a town on the banks of the Lake of Galilee and was most likely a fisherman.Nathanael was from Cana in Galilee. Like Philip, he is only mentioned in lists of disciples in thesynoptic gospels but is also present at the naming of Matthias to replace Judas in the first chapterof Acts.

Both men followed Jesus through his ministry until his death and resurrection and went on tospread the Good News of salvation until the very end of their lives. Nathanael was martyred inAlbanopolis in Armenia. With little known about Philip's later life, it is believed he went on tobecome the Bishop of Lydia, the northern district of Asia Minor. Both men answered the call thatchanged their lives forever.

Most men on a KAIROS team started because someone asked them to, like Nathanael. It wasn't aheavenly calling - or was it? Later on in KAIROS it's not unusual to hear men say they feel called tothe ministry, answering a call that has changed many of them forever. It's funny how our CreatorGod can use a retired surgeon or accountant, a single mom, fighter pilot or an artist to share thelove of Christ inside a prison, a place they had never been or wanted to go. You will know whenyou are doing the work God called you to do, the work he prepared you to do. I never met a manthat felt prepared to do prison ministry, but they were. God knows. (Psalm 139:12-14) Is Godcalling you?
