Issue : 271 20 March, 2020

Need for introspectionOver the last few weeks, there has been a stupendous increase

in the crime graph. Cases of daylight robbery, chain snatching etc.are on the rise while the detection rate has remained abysmal. This has instilled a sense of insecurity amongst the residents. Thenon chalant attitude of the many police officials, non friendly imageof the police department and the difficult legal procedures haveonly helped in eroding the image further.

This is an era of specialization. Considering the competitive-ness that one has to face, success in any field, to a great extent, depends on specialization. This adage applies to the police de-partment as well. The present day working in the police depart-ment makes it imperative for the officials to carry out a wide rangeof duties, which in turn adversely affects their performance as primesecurity providing agency. The police today have no defined du-ties, which varies from nabbing criminals to providing security tothe VVIPs to making bandobast for dharnas & community cele-brations, to managing traffic, mediating in disputes, providing se-curity cover to the politicians during elections and election ralliesand what not. It is because of this multi faceted duty requirementthat the performance of police in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai islack luster and they fail to perform their prime duty that of provid-ing security to the residents, which is what they are actually creat-ed for. Limited force equipped with arms of the stone- age era withunlimited working hours is finding itself at the receiving end es-pecially when the nature of crime is getting sophisticated and com-plex. As is said power corrupts person, the same is true to greatextent for the police force also, which wields legitimate and sometimes even illegitimate powers. Lack of commitment and weakmorale are visible in the police force today leading to disgust inthe society and police as a profession carries a very poor image.

The police alone cannot be blamed for this sorry state of affairs.Huge interferences from the politicians who treat the police de-partment as personal employees, has also contributed towards itspoor performances. Transfers and postings make lot of news thesedays where merits rarely count. This has put a big question markon the working of the police department and there is an eminentneed for revamping the whole system especially in view of therecent scam.

The police department needs to go in for specialized forces fordifferent works like for example crime branch, VVIPs security, traffic department etc. It is heartening to note that recently effortshave been made to modernize the department, but the forcesshould be imparted specialized training in dealing with particularkind of crimes especially in view of new types of crimes like finan-cial and cyber crimes. Further, the city police have also been in-structed not to provide VIP escorts on the route from Mumbai toPune, which is the right step. Besides this, a significant amount ofautonomy needs to be given to the police department and therehas to be a minimum interference from the politicians. In this re-vamping process not only the police department needs to be over-hauled but the public in general also needs to be counseled. Theillegal migrants from neighbouring countries, the slum dwellers, many of the road side beggars and urchins are also potential crim-inals and they need to be discouraged as prevention of crime isbetter than conviction of criminals after crime is committed. Theworking conditions in the police department need to be improvedand the police force should be augmented and equipped with lat-est arms, means of communication & transportation. They shouldalso have better inter connection and exchange of information withother security agencies in order to enhance their performance andalso to improve their sagging morale.

I believe sustainable development at an individual levelcan be done by planting enough trees in one’s place. Small plants and even the ones which will yield somekind of small vegetables or spices can be done. Also useof electricity should be controlled. Other aspects such aswalking instead of taking the bike if it’s walkable orusing recyclable stuffs should be done.

Sajil Nair, Pillai College

FROM THE CAMPUSHow do you plan to bring sustainable development at individual level?

In a world with over 7 billion people, supply and demandis always increasing and for the same resources willforever be exploited. Now one can’t simply state to stopthe world to save it, it doesn’t work that way. What onecan do is keep developing the world but in a mannerthat can also not kill it instantly. If you aren’t powerfulenough to do it at a large scale, do it at an individuallevel. Save water, reduce the consumption of electricity, try to use public transportation, plant a tree. It’s as easyas this. You don’t have to always start a revolution to bring a change.Remember it took only one man to bring electricity into the world and ifone man can bring it, one man can save it too. Be that one man andinspire others around you to be that too. Sustainable development is thekey and only that way can the world be a better place.

Aaryamann Shrivastava, SY BMM, Pillai College

Technology is significant for development and satisfieshuman need but poor application has resulted in thepollution of our environment and has caused a seriousthreat to our lives and society. We should use an appro-priate technology which is locally adaptable, eco-friend-ly, resource efficient thus helping to curb environmen-tal degradation and promoting sustainable development.

Sana Abdul Jabbar Shaikh, ICLE’S. M. J. College, Vashi

As the world is giving us the warnings of death, it ishigh time we need to understand and focus on issuescreated by us- Global Warming. It is similar to democ-racy: of the people; by the people; for the people. Buy asmany cars, bikes, trucks or bulldozers you want andkeep it safely in your sheds as they need rest after con-tinuous racing and use it for long distance travellingrather than using it to go to nearby garden or shops. I

would rather suggest buying cycles than 2 extra cars.D.M.R Prithviraj Kumar, Pillai College of Arts, Commerce and Science

The transparent speech, inclusive approach and aban-doning the old stereotype is the most required changeand now it is right in front of us. This is the only chanceto utilize the only hope who can lead the people towardssustainable development.

Nishant Tale, Sy BMM, Pillai College

Question for next week: Measures undertaken at

individual level for controlling Coronavirus

I think, we, as individuals, can maintain and even im-prove our standard of living by learning how to managethe resources by not wasting them as many people doright now. And through this manner, we can educate alot of people around us to do the same, so preaching plusdoing what we preach will help bring the sustainableenvironment.

Online and offline real estatemarketing strategies for new agents:

Mr Rahul Grover-CEO, SECCPLMUMBAI: The real

estate industry inIndia has seen itsshare of highs andlows. The growinglevels of disposableincome and growthof job development inthe country, alongwith governmentinitiatives such asPradhan MantriAwas Yojna (PMAY),Affordable Housingfor all, have helpedin bolstering the realestate sector atlarge.

This presents agreat opportunity forproperty agents tocast their net forpotential customersand leads. But inorder to make asignificant impact, itis highly importantto create an effectivemarketing plan. This should be doneby considering allthe elements presenttoday in the world ofmarketing andadvertising, bycurating a plan thatcomprises a healthymix of traditionaland new age tech-niques. Thus, acombination of onlineand offline strategiesshould be used togrow awareness.

Build your onlinepresence:

The growing rateof internet penetra-tion in the countrymeans that a largeportion of the Indianpopulation is online. To meet thesepotential customers,it is very importantto establish an onlinepresence. In order todo this, it is firstcrucial to build awebsite. Today theinternet has becomethe first searchresource for consum-ers when they areprospecting a pur-chase. This standstrue for the realestate industry aswell. In order toachieve maximumimpact, it is better to

create a website thatis optimised formobile users.

Invest indigital marketing:Most of the Indian

population is cur-rently online, whichmakes it importantfor any business toinvest in digitalavenues of market-ing. Through thetechnologies avail-able for onlinemarketing, agentscan approach theirtarget audience more

effectively andpresent them withthe exact offering oftheir need.

Carry out localadvertising (direct &indirect):

It is always agood idea to buildgood relations in thecommunity, andlocal businessesflourish when theyare in harmony withtheir community.Awareness for thebusiness should bedone via direct andindirect advertisingstrategies like OOH,advertisements inlocal theatres andinstitutes, publish-ing relevant contentin local publications, provide sponsorshipfor local events andmore. This will helpin building goodwillfor the brand thatcan result in ahigher referral ratein future. Another

indirect method ofmarketing thebusiness is byhosting local semi-nars on topics thatcover the ins andouts of real estatebuying, selling, orinvesting.

Partner with localbusinesses:

Another way tobuild good communi-ty relations is bycollaborating withlocal businesses. This is an instru-mental way tonetwork within thelocal professionalcommunity andspread word of thebusiness.

Curate good digitalcontent:

It is not justenough to build anonline presence andcarry out advertis-ing tactics; it isimportant to estab-lish the business orthe leader as anindustry expert. Byreleasing relevantcontent throughdigital mediums, thebusiness can attractattention from thoseinterested in thefield. Making this aregular practice caninfluence people totrust in the advicegiven by the busi-ness, which makesthem approach it inorder to fulfil all oftheir real estatequeries and de-mands.Have an effective CRM

setup:Client interaction

and retaining isextremely importantfor a real estateagent, which is whyis it crucial to havean effective CRM(Customer Relation-ship Management)system put in place, through this, theagent can gain accessto new leads, andnurture the ones thathave already beenconverted, by carry-ing out a rewards forreferrals program.

Steps to Prevent Corona VirusBy Arun Kr Shrivastav

After the outbreak of Coronavirusin China at the end of 2019, it hasreached far and wide, infecting hun-dreds of thousands of people and claim-ing many lives around the world. TheWHO has termed the outbreak aspandemic and urged the people andgovernments around the world to takesufficient cautions to safeguard one-self against the infection and preventinfecting others in case you have gotthe Coronavirus infection. Here, weare going to discuss some steps toprevent Coronavirus.

As of now, there is no vaccineagainst COVID 19 (Coronavirus dis-ease 2019). The only way one can safe-guard oneself against the virus is byavoiding exposure to the virus. Coro-navirus is believed to be spreadingthrough person to person. The viruscan infect the other person if he orshe stays within a distance of 6 feetfrom the infected person.

It can spread through respiratorydroplets when an infected personcoughs or sneezes. These droplets car-rying the Coronavirus from the in-fected person can land on the nose ormouth of the other person who canunknowingly inhale these dropletsinto their lungs, making the virusfind a conducive environment to growand make the personsick.

Older people whohave severe chronicdiseases related to theheart or lungs or thosehaving diabetes are ata greater risk of infec-tion and developing se-rious complications.Such people should consult their doc-tors for precautions.

Protect yourselfWash your hands frequently

If you have spent some time in apublic place, sneezed, coughed orblown your nose, you must wash yourhands for about 20 seconds with wa-ter and soap. If you don’t have waterand soap available, you can use a handsanitizer with 60% alcohol. Cover yourhands with the sanitizer and rub ituntil the hands become dry. Don’ttouch your nose, eyes, and mouth ifyou have not washed your hands justnow.

No close contactsIf you come across a sick person,

avoid getting very close to him. Ifsomeone is infected with COVID-19in your family or neighborhood, youshould maintain distance from the in-fected person. People who are at ahigher risk should especially keep adistance from the infected person.

Protect othersIf you are infected with Coronavi-

rus and sick, you should stop movingaround and stay at your home. How-ever, you should ensure you get prop-er medical care and if this warrantsyou to move to the hospital, you

should.Cover your mouth & nose

If you have been diagnosed withcoronavirus infection, you should cov-er your mouth and nose with tissuepapers when coughing or sneezing.Discard the tissue papers immediate-ly to the trash bin. This should befollowed by hand washing as instruct-ed above.Cover your mouth & nose with a facemask

If you are infected with coronavi-rus and sick, you should cover yourmouth and nose with a facemask, es-pecially when you are close to otherpeople such as in the room or a vehi-cle or before entering a clinic or hos-pital. Make sure others who are en-tering you’re including the medicalstaff is wearing a proper facemask andyour mouth and nose are properlycovered when you sneeze or cough.

In case you are not infected orsick, you should wear the facemaskonly if you are attending to someonewho is sick. Remember, facemaskscan be in short supply so it’s bettersaved for those attending to sick peo-ple.

Cleaning & disinfectionThere are some frequently touched

items at your home and these itemsneed to be cleaned and disinfectedthoroughly and frequently. Door-

knobs, tables, lightswitches, handles, desk, countertops, phones, faucets, toi-lets, and sinks aresome of these itemsthat need to be cleanedand disinfected. If youfind these surfacesdirty, you better clean

them with detergent and water be-fore applying disinfecting agents.

EPA-approved common householddisinfectants would work in most cir-cumstances but still, you should readthe labels to know where they shouldnot be applied.

You can also make your bleach oralcohol-based disinfection solutions.

Bleach solutionIf you are using bleach, you should

dilute it in the ratio of 5 teaspoonbleach to 1 gallon of water before youuse the solution to disinfect differentsurfaces in your house. Householdbleach that has not crossed its expirydate will work against coronavirus-es.

Alcohol solutionAn alcohol-based solution to dis-

infect household surfaces should haveat least 71% alcohol in it.

Concluding thoughtsCorona is a deadly virus that can

spread fast through contacts or prox-imity to an infected person. Washingone’s hands with soap and water andkeeping frequently-touched surfacescan also contain its spread. These arethe steps to prevent the Coronavirus.

The fight against coronavirus isa global war and with people cooper-ating with the state we have takenmeasures to contain this pandemicas of now. We will overcome this dan-ger if Maharashtra makes utmostefforts. I have talked today with thePrime Minister Narendra Modi andUnion Health Minister Dr. HarshVardhan in this regard and they as-sured all the cooperation to our state.

This was stated by Chief Minis-ter Uddhav Thackeray in a live tele-cast on social media. He urged peo-ple not to get panicky and store es-sential commodities, food grains, andmedicines.

Sharing his thoughts on varioussteps people should take to avoid theCOVID -19 including avoiding crowd-ed places totally, the Chief Ministerasked the people to strictly follow theinstruction given by the administra-tion. “Though the crowd at religiousplaces was reduced it is not complete-ly avoided. We must avoid crowd to-tally, he said. We have taken a deci-sion to reduce the number of employ-ees at government, private offices.Don’t venture outside when it is notneeded. Follow ‘Work From Home’wherever possible and follow the in-structions strictly. The precaution-ary measures we are taking are sat-isfactory but the virus is inchingahead step by step forcing us to bemore careful and vigilant. People aremanaging the systems and weshould not overburden them”.

Urging Home quarantine per-sons not to roam, the CM Thacker-ay said “All patients have been in-fected from outside. They are all ourpeople, relatives. But they shouldcome hereafter taking all the care.Home quarantine patients arestamped on their hands. They should

remain confined to isolation and donot travel concealing informationabout their foreign travel”.

Retorting his views that this is awar against the virus, The CM add-ed “War has to be fought with deter-mination and won. Many have wit-nessed and experienced the 1965 and1971 wars. The experience of war hasnever been good. The post-war situ-ation is not better either. Soldiersfight for the country, sacrifice theirlives. The way we are fighting withcoronavirus, I am reminded of the1971 war. Today we are fighting awar against the virus. The war hasbegun. Doctors, nurses are our sol-diers. Bus drivers, NGOs are work-ing day and night for this. Can wenot cooperate with them by remain-ing at home?

Calamity does not strike lookingat caste, religion, and creed. Whenwe unitedly fight this calamitywould not harm us, cannot. This vi-rus was first found in China but nowChina has taken strict measures andis coming out of this attack. We alsohave to come out. For that, cooper-ate. I am confident that we will over-come this calamity”.

Letters to the Editor....

Our Missing DaughtersIn India the population of girls has been de-

creasing. We need to understand that girls areour fortune. Socio-economic empowerment of wom-en is essential for making informed decisions andfor change of the mind sets. A healthy male-fe-male ratio is a social need. A stronger law to deal with those resorting tosex-selective abortions needs to be enacted. The reasons for high num-ber of incidence of female foeticide in India include a deep rooted tradi-tional son preference, continued practice of dowry and concern for safetyof the girl child and exploitation and abuse of women and girl children.

In order to curb female foeticide and improve the sex ratio, a strong amulti-pronged strategy that includes legislative measures, advocacy, awareness generation and programmes for socio-economic empowermentof women is needed. There’s a huge deficit of women because familiesfear the cost of raising a daughter. It is a commonly practiced tradition(despite being outlawed) that the bride’s family pays a large sum of mon-ey to the groom’s family at the wedding. Plus, women are generally notseen as bread-winners and or allowed to inherit wealth like men in somestates. Sex-selection is now spreading to rural areas as the technologygets cheaper and enforcement of the law remains ineffectual. Media ex-poses of doctors providing sex-selection services and offering to abortgirls are commonplace, but they have little overall impact because de-mand is too strong.

Despite rising levels of education, gender awareness and stringentpro-women laws, change has been slow and violence against women isincreasing. Visionary leadership, stringent implementation of laws anda united effort to discourage dowry are the need of the hour. Time hasnow come to formulate an action plan to launch a campaign to changethe mindset of people and to promote female child birth rate

Time for introspectionNothing from Almighty comes without a reason and so is this dread-

ed virus. Everyone is now as close to dying as a cough or sneeze ( whichin normal times would have been considered insignificant and gone with-out being even noticed)

God probably wants mankind to remain in isolation and spend timeon introspection. What has he be doing with fellow humans. Killingothers has become so easy and cheap but fear of one's own death makesus take every single precaution prescribed.

If we come out a better human with karuna and pain for our fellowhuman beings, we have won a bigger battle than this passing phasewhich surely will vanish as quickly as it appeared.

Stay safe indoors with your loved ones and think about those whowill be indoors but without their loved ones just because many thoughttheir lives were not that precious !!!

Closure of religious places due toCorona-virus outbreak

It is for the first time in the history of mankind that all religiousplaces of all major religions of the world are closed due to the fear ofCorona-virus, as it may spread more because of large gatherings of thepeople. Pope Francis left the Vatican Cityunannounced and visited two churches, where he prayed in front of a crucifix thatwas used in a procession when the plaguehit Rome in 1522. He prayed for an end tothe pandemic and also for the sick, theirfamilies and health providers and workerskeeping pharmacies and food stores openamid a national lockdown.

It is really very sad for all of us and it is time for us to stay in prayerand confess our sins to God. I request everyone to please pray for theentire world. May God protect us and save us from this epidemic andhelp our scientists to develop a vaccine for the treatment of this monsterdisease. Please pray for the doctors and medical professionals too whoare working day and night in helping us. May God protect them andbless their families with good health and prosperity.
