Obesity rates in In-dia are rising rapidly, with almost 5% of thepopulation being de-tected as overweight orobese. The WorldHealth Organization(WHO) now considersobesity to be a globalepidemic. Yet few ef-forts are being made tocounteract the com-mercial and culturalpressures.

To facilitate happyliving both fruits andvegetables help out tolive in right spiritswith a happy frame ofmind. Even for diabet-ic patients doctors sug-gest few tips to fight fitwith fibre foods andfight obesity which isavailable in plenty inboth vegetables andfruits. Fruit is the wayof life to fight obesity. It is ideal to live on afibre high diet all theyear round. Fibre hasanti- inflammatoryproperties and is alsorich in vitamins, min-erals and antioxidants. Our body requires avariety of proteins, car-bohydrates, vitamins,

Obesity can be cured with determinationcalories, fat, enzymes, trace elements, antiox-idants for its metabo-lism and most impor-tantly to enhance theimmune systemagainst the diseasesand strengthen ourbody. To get the opti-mum health benefits, itis recommended to eatvariety of fresh organ-ic fruits to furnish ourbody with essential nu-trients. Similarly, veg-etables are also play-ing equal role in bal-ancing your body me-tabolism and that inturn help to reap hap-piness benefits.

Life satisfaction ismore important andthat can be achieved byconsuming fresh or-ganic vegetables. Butthe pity is that a ram-pant adulteration infood items continue topose a real threat to thelife of people in theMetro city. Adultera-tion of eatables is seenin every nook corner ofMumbai and that de-feats very purpose ofeating fruits and vege-tables.

Bariatric surgery isassuming importanceas Mumbai hospitalsare able to achievegreater success and itis a great news for peo-ple suffering from obe-sity all over the world.Bariatric surgery in-cludes a variety of pro-

cedures performed onpeople who have obesi-ty. Weight loss isachieved by reducingthe size of the stomachwith a gastric band orthrough removal of aportion of the stomachor by resetting and re-routing the small in-testine to a small stom-ach pouch. These sur-gery is possible in In-dia with less fees andit is attracting foreign-

ers and locals as well.In one such case theEgyptian lost 20 kilosin 10 days after theweight reduction sur-gery. Even though careshould be taken on dietand health issues, suc-cess percentage of suchsurgeries appears sig-nificant and more andmore people opt for itjust like the MP cop.Initial hick ups andworries on health areobserved but overall itis a safe and steady pro-cedure to reduce overweight.

Childhood obesity is

a harsh reality. Par-ents should take it se-riously. They shouldnot assume that whenthey grow up they willbecome slim. The qual-ity of junk food is dete-riorating. Preferenceshould always be givento home cooked food. All soft drinks havevery high levels of sug-ar which ultimatelyleads to fat gain. Oncein a while eating out-

side is fine but if it be-comes too often it willlead to fat gain in chil-dren who already havelow metabolism. Thenumber of overweightchildren in India hasdoubled in recentyears, with a quarterof children consideredoverweight or obese.Causes of obesity inchildren include un-healthy food choices, lack of physical activi-ty and family eatinghabits.

This rise in thenumber of overweightchildren is disturbing,

because it causeshealth problems andcan lead to social prob-lems. Overweight chil-dren are more likely tobe teased by their peersor to develop low self-esteem or body imageproblems. Once chil-dren are overweight, itrequires a lot of effortand commitment forthem to return to ahealthy weight. Obesi-ty can have a majorimpact on how childrenfeel about themselvesand how they interactwith others. Obese ad-olescents are more like-ly to have low self-es-teem, which may im-pact on other aspects oftheir lives, such as thedevelopment of friend-ships and competencyat school. Being obeseas a child or adolescentincreases the risk of arange of diseases anddisorders in adulthood, regardless of whetherthe adult is obese ornot. It’s important toidentify and start to re-verse the condition be-fore children becomeadults. Ideally, over-weight and obesityshould be prevented.

Overweight andobesity in children areamong the most impor-tant risks to children’slong and short-termhealth. Overweightchildren are very like-ly to become over-

weight adults. Over-weight or obese chil-dren are more likely toremain obese as ado-lescents and becomeoverweight or obeseadults. About 80 percent of obese adoles-cents will become obeseadults. Most of thehealth problems asso-ciated with obesity willbecome obvious inadulthood. Early signsof these later problemsare commonly found inchildren. As over-weight and obesityhave become morecommon, there havebeen some majorchanges in how welive. These changeshave led to people eithereating more or becom-ing less active, all ofwhich has contributedto an increase in over-weight and obesity.Childhood obesity is acondition where excessbody fat negatively af-fects a child’s health orwell-being. As methodsto determine body fatdirectly are difficult, the diagnosis of obesi-ty is often based onvarious tests. It is bet-ter for parents to makeup their mind to havea good beginning invarious aspects con-cerning obesity fromvery young age.

Good public transport-the need of the hour

The state of public transport system is a barometer indicatingextent of development of a city. If one goes by this definition, theimage of Navi Mumbai that emerges out is extremely dishearten-ing considering the deplorable state of NMMT, the public trans-port service provider in Navi Mumbai. The quantity of service ishugely deficient and the quality is abysmally poor. Not only this, tariffs have also become unaffordable. Still they are being patron-ized by local people, not out of choice but out of compulsion, asdemand is disproportionately more than the supply.

The public transport modes in Navi Mumbai- whether NMMT,BEST, ST or local trains- none have expanded proportionately tothe increase in demand on account of large scale development inNavi Mumbai during the last decade. A major fallout of this lack ofvision is increased number of personalized and hired modes oftransportation, which itself has its adverse effects. The traffic den-sity and traffic volumes have increased tremendously without cor-responding increase in arterial infrastructure and therefore thetransport system is literally creaking under pressure. There is anincrease in traffic jams and more recently, the availability of park-ing spaces has reduced drastically especially during peak hours. The environment is also victim as huge amount of exhaust is be-ing released by the increased volumes of vehicles. Another majorimpact of increased volume and density of vehicles is increase intraffic indiscipline and consequent accidents.

Unfortunately NMMT has not fared well on the expectations ofthe residents of Navi Mumbai. This is particularly unfortunate as agood public transport system contributes a lot by way of providingcheaper transport, reduction in vehicle population and consequentreduction in traffic congestion and accidents and last but not theleast in preserving the environment. It can also solve the problemof parking space. Because of its poor vision and improper man-agement, NMMT is grossly deficient in quality and quantity ofservice. Many of the nodes of Navi Mumbai are not being cateredto and frequency is erratic and the service is absolutely unreli-able. To set the things right, there are intermittent talks of priva-tizing the organisation, but unfortunately in most of the cities andcountries, the public transport is the responsibility of the State.More investment needs to be made by the State in this sector, ifthese services have to be made efficient with an aim to cater theincreased demand. Also, improved NMMT shall not only compli-ment the services being provided by railways, BEST and ST, butshall also become the indicator of development of the city of NaviMumbai.

ity but is posing serious health haz-ard to the residents who are resid-ing within the radius of 200 metresof the garbage dumping site. More-over, it is alleged that the UMC isviolating the Coastal RegulationZone (CRZ) 2019 norms and the Bom-bay High Court (HC) order, 2005 andHC order 2018 which had bannedmangrove destruction across Maha-rashtra.

“There is a clause which clearlystates that dumping of garbage anddischarge of sewage water is not per-mitted within the radius of 500 me-tres of residential area and 50 me-tres of mangroves. There is a com-plete violation of this clause as theresidences are located within 200metres of the existing dumping plot. Moreover, UMC is also violating theCRZ 2019 norms,” says SameerAshrit, a local resident.

“Due to the close proximity ofthe dumping ground to the resi-dential area, the residents are fac-ing serious health related problemsespecially skin diseases, head-aches, breathing/respiratory ail-ments due to the rotten odouremanating from the garbage. There is a rise in mosquitoes, flieswhich has led to outbreak of Den-gue and Malaria. Moreover, sincethe present dumping ground isalso close to ONGC Valve stationfor pipelines that pass under thedumping ground transporting vari-ous flammable petrochemical prod-ucts, there can be a disaster in caseof major fire, which had occurred lastyear. Besides, UMC is also violatingOfficials Secret Act, 1923 as the ap-proach path to the dumping sitecomes under the protected area ofONGC. The area is visited by manyillegal rag pickers, drunkards, drugpeddlers etc. The residents in thearea are being deprived of Article 21of Constitution of India which givesRight to Life and Personal Liberty,”he adds.

“The eco system too is being van-dalised as many migratory birds, fish and marine animals in the shal-low water bay are dying due to this. The UMC is also violating Article 51A (g) under Environment Protectionunder Constitutional Framework ofIndia,” says Dipesh Mhatre, anoth-er resident.

“We have written letters to UMCas well as to Tehsildar and had meet-ings with the officials too regardingthe dumping of garbage close to thepipelines. The officials have assuredto remove the garbage. However, weare awaiting a written confirmationof the same. Further, while we havebarricaded our zone, we nevertheless, had requested for extra area for put-ting additional barricades. This hasbeen granted to us,” said NarendraAsija, Director (Plant Head), ONGC,Uran.

The residents of Bori Pakhadihave sent a letter with signatures tothe District Collector and DistrictMagistrate urging them to shift thegarbage dumping site immediately.

“We fail to understand as to whythe multiple authorities are not act-ing to shift the dumping ground de-spite the environment and securityhazards being posed by the men-ace?,” asks B. N. Kumar, director ofNGO NatConnect, who shot outmails to the district collector and theHigh Court appointed Mangrove Pro-tection and Monitoring Committee.

The various research studiesshow that the rising sea levelsthreaten the coastal cities such asMumbai and mangroves serve as thefirst line of defense. Even the forestdepartment has realised the need toplant newer varieties of mangroves.“At a time when we need more andmore mangroves, we are killingthese and infact are inching closerto devastation,” laments Kumar.

Nandakumar Pawar, head ofShri Ekvira Aai Pratishtan pointedout that team of revenue and forestofficials too inspected the area andrecorded the objections from local peo-ple and environmentalists, yet therehas been no action.

Talking to Newsband, AwdhutTawde, Chief Officer UMC said, “Thegarbage dumping site was handedover to us in 2008 by Raigad Collec-torate. At that time there were nomangroves in the vicinity. The gar-bage dumping sites are allocated af-ter a proper survey conducted by var-ious departments. Moreover, we en-sure that the garbage do not harmthe mangroves, which are away fromthe dumping site. Nevertheless, wehave requested for an alternative gar-bage dumping site and the processis underway.”

As regards the presence of ONGCgas pipeline valve station in close vi-cinity to the garbage dumping site,Mr. Tawde said, “We take adequateprecaution for that too, and ensurethat the garbage is not dumped closeto the pipelines.” He confirmed thata letter has been received fromONGC regarding the issue.

When contacted District Collec-tor and District Magistrate, Raigad,Dr. Vijay Namdeo Suryawanshi said,“I have told Tehsildar, Uran to iden-tify suitable land for dumping groundand send the proposal to me in 15days.”

Wishing the new government all the BestWith Uddhav Thackeray becoming the CM of Maharashtra, let us all

wish him and his team all the best. May Shiv Sena and the alliance governMaharashtra with a sense of courage, commitment, sincerity and compas-sion for the next five years and even more. If Balasaheb Thackeray wasalive today, he would have been very happy to see his son becoming the CMof the State.

Open defecation to be curbed in Jarandi VillageThe decision made by Jarandi village gram panchayat in Maharashtra

to cancel ration cards of families even if one of the members is caught defe-cating in the open is brave and a move in the right direction in India’s battleagainst open defecation. The officials have also decided to provide villagerswith tax benefits if they take photographs and submit them to the Pan-chayat.

The new rules will help people to have better hygiene and will help in thedecrease of diseases caused due to the accompanying mosquitoes. However,it is also important to make sure that in an effort to stop open defecation, basic facilities like bathrooms are provided to villagers.

In Jarandi, the homes have toilet facilities but choose to defecate in theopen. However, this might not be the case for villages that would want tofollow the same course of action. Most people who defecate in the open do sobecause of the lack of facilities provided to them. So, with our increasingefforts to curb open defecation, basic facilities should also be provided toevery household. The decision is great but ensuring its implementation isgreater. Only time will provide us with answers as to the decisions’ effec-tiveness.

Carry on TrioPolitical parties often dump their ideological baggage to come together

and the adhesive being their fervent desire to cling on to power like a lim-pet. There is a tide in the affair of men , which taken at the flood, leads tofortune. Omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and miser-ies. One such a full sea are we afloat. And we must take the current whenit serves, or lose our ventures. For the time being it is united colours ofUddhav Thackeray and Sena get cracking. The trio can work in peace. It islikely to stick in alliance crew given the diametrically opposite stances oftwo of the stakeholders in the current government. But this is where, theseptuagenarian Sharad Pawar steps in, the buffer element in the reaction. For now Uddhav is the man of the moment. As for his former ally, it is inthe shallows at the moment.

The Tug of War finally gets over. The Nail-biting scenario has emergedas a political power shift. Hoping for a better future of Maharashtra. It’stime for the newly-power packed alliance to work effectively and impres-sively. Time to leave a mark on grabbing this opportunity that had becomeavailable after a series of omissions and commissions.

Please provide 5 years of Clean and efficient government and make Ma-harashtra a model state in every respect so that the rest of Indian statescan follow your role model. Post poll defection is breach of trust, it is rathershameful for Sena to go with pre-poll enemies. Has the ‘Tamasha’ ended orhas it begun only now? The biggest volte-face we have seen in the recenttimes on the part of Ajit Pawar, Dy.CM of three days duration, who hastendered his resignation citing ‘personal’ reasons which he could not foreseeall of three days ago and which made Fednavis to tender his resignation too. What one can make of these developments except to come to the conclusionthat the power hungry politicians will go to any length to betray the elector-ate to self serve their selfish interests.

Whatever happened in Maharashtra BJP’s core committee will makepostmortem of it. Moot point is here that will the committee take any les-sons from it or kept on doing so what they have been doing so. Both Shahand Modi have to amend campaign mode especially of particular state whereelections are to be held. In particular Shah has been more aggressive whereasModi has been making show offs like how he has been getting response inforeign countries where ever he goes to attend various conferences or sched-uled visits.

The local citizens have nothing to do with it. Not only the state’s localissues must be seen but corresponding solutions should be worked out. Unlessit is not done the future of BJP shall become bleak.

Devendra Fadnavis was by far the cleanest and most noncontroversialCM that we have had in the recent past. The State of Maharashtra willmiss him. He was the first Chief Minister in 50 years to rule the state forfull five years. We hope that implementation of all the commitments madein the CMP will start within the first 50 days. All parties including youthbodies should also form joint action committees to keep an eye on implemen-tation of CMP. Time would tell more.

Water drinking breaksRealising that many students do not drink sufficient water which

sometimes leads to dehydration, many states in the country have nowmade it mandatory to provide ‘water drinking breaks’ in schools. Theconcept of water breaks was first introduced in Kerala and later othersouth Indian states followed suit including Tamil Nadu, Karnatakaand Telangana and now even Goa has made it mandatory for schoolsto introduce two water drinking breaks of two minutes duration.

Keeping hydrated is crucial for health and well being. Around 60percent of the body is made up of water. However, many of us, espe-cially children do not consume water or simply forget to keep them-selves hydrated from time to time.

Moreover, studies have revealed that drinking water can help stu-dents in staying focused, creative, and energized. The brain works ona complex electrolyte formula and depends on suitable hydration tofunction properly. There is a tendency, especially amongst the young-sters, to quench thirst by consuming aerated drinks. While soft drinksmay temporarily relieve thirst, they actually work as a diuretic, mak-ing the body lose water faster than it can be utilized. To process thesugar content of sodas, the body pulls out water from extracellularfluids, thus leaving the body less hydrated than before the soft drink.

While there is no universally agreed quantity of water that mustbe consumed daily, as it is dependent on various factors like bodyweight, age, climate and daily activities, it is commonly recommendedto drink eight glasses of water of eight ounces per day. We generallyget about 20 percent of our fluid needs from the food we eat and var-ious other beverages. However, the requirement for the other 80 per-cent of our fluids needs to get fulfilled each day from drinking purewater. We lose fluids on a continuous basis from sweating, breathingand urinating. When the body loses more water than is being replaced, dehydration occurs and brain functions get affected. However, as perthe doctors, when the brain is operating with plenty of water, studentsare able to have greater clarity, creativity, focus and quicker thoughtprocess. Drinking adequate water also prevents urinary track infec-tion and constipation.

Pure water is the best solution for hydration. It is important toinculcate the habit of drinking water right from childhood. Water isthe pre-eminent beverage that can keep the mind and body energizedand operate at their best. Water drinking breaks should be introducedby all the states in the schools to ensure that children remain hydrat-ed at all times. Schools should also spread awareness on the impor-tance of drinking water to the students so that it becomes a habit.

dents. Accordingly, thestate transport depart-ment has given stronginstructions to all po-lice commissioners andpolice superintendents

of the state as well asregional transport de-partment to carry outdrives with an aim toreduce road accidents. It also ordered strictsuspension of driving li-cense for violating traf-fic rules.
