Doug, being a keen boatie and living on the Bayside Area his wife Anne conned him into a come and try session with Manly Dragon Boat Club. He was hooked straight away and became a fulltime member in 2011. .

Unfortunately due to injury paddling was be-coming a little difficult, so became an Official and has supported the sport at many events whether it be driving the RIB, handling a boat and doing any job that was thrown at him.

Doug spent many hours out on the water in Adelaide in his official position! Well done Doug!

Congratulations to Doug Davies from Manly Club for being selected to be the Queensland flag bearer at the 2016 Australian Championships recently held in Adelaide.

Carol The Australian Dragon Boat community is still mourning the tragic loss of Carol Waitohi member of Dragons Abreast Gold Coast and former member of BRD.

Carol contributed greatly over many years to the sport as a club paddler, Queensland representative, and volunteer. She was much loved and highly respected by all those who knew her and this was made very evident by the many facebook photos and posts. Our condolence to Willis, Lorraine and family as well as members for Dragons Abreast Gold Coast Pink Dragons and her former club Brisbane River Dragons.

The post on the DBQ page by Gayle Bar-nett was a very fitting tribute. Gayle wrote: Cooloola Club have decided it a fitting to name the Pink Challenge Trophy “The Carol Waitohi Trophy” from 2016 Sleepy Lagoon Regatta onwards. A small gesture that symolises a much larger ideal for Car-ol was the epitome of “Dragon Spirit” that the Australian Dragon Boat Community holds so dear.

DBQ have had a small signed paddle donated by a crew member of the Australian Senior B Women’s team that won a Gold Medal in Sydney in 2007. Until now we’re had no reason to use it. From 2017 Queensland State Titles the perpetual trophy named The Carol Waitohi Senior Ladies Trophy and will be awarded to the Senior Women’s 20 crew that achieves the fastest time over 500m.

It has been another great year for the Queensland Sonics. The season for the Sonics started with a bang - the recording of a segment for the TV show Totally Wild thanks to Steve Marshall from DBQ. We definitely confirmed we have some acting talent in the squad.

Over the season the number of members slowly grew, culminating in 23 Sonic Juniors attending the State Championships in Bucca. Currently the squad consists of 30 paddlers from clubs spanning all the way from Mackay, 1770, Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast, Redcliffe, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads. Going forward we have 11 members attending the Aus Champs in Adelaide. The Sonics will be combining with the Fremantle Cygnets to form the Sonic Cygnets. It will be great to see the Sonics represented on a National level.

Over the season we had great training sessions and heaps of fun. One of the highlights was the Training camp at Coomera. We had 17 attendees who endured three on-water sessions and one land session. It was great to see the commitment by all paddlers and the improvement which they have shown as a team in one single day. They especially enjoyed the on-land session where they had to work with each other in a number of challenges. The prizes were awesome as well, the winning team receiving oranges with the second team receiving lemons (although the ice blocks afterwards seem to have been better received!)

Going into next season the plan is to continue to build a full squad to attend the Aus Champs with the goal to compete in a full 20s boats. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the clubs, parents and DBQ for the great support we have received all season long. Also I would like to thank our Team manager - Olivia - who spent countless hours organising the season in the background. Without her the whole season would not have been such a great success.

QUEENSLAND STATES TITLES 2016This year, for the first time Queensland clubs ventured into regional waters for our State Titles. The Bucca Rowing club is a beautiful venue with so much potential! We’ve learned so much about the venue after using it for the first time and thanks to the clubs who have provided their feedback already on how to improve the event because they all want to go back.

Thanks from the DBQ board to the clubs of the Wide Bay Region for their enthusiasm about hav-ing the event in their waters and for their assistance in getting the event up and running.Congratulations to all clubs who attended and the fabulous sportsmanship shown during the Championships. The feedback from the Bucca Rowing Club was ‘a great bunch of friendly peo-ple’.Because it was such a success, there have also been suggestions to consider the possibility of holding future titles in other regional areas. Something for serious consideration by us all!

Congratulations to Brisbane River Dragons – Club Champions for 2015-2016

DRAGON BOATS QUEENSLANDCOOMERA REGATTA 14TH February 2016

PREAMBLEWestern region clubs (LAKERS, LAKE DWYER & IPSWICH) were given the opportunity to host the inaugural DBQ regatta. With the assistance of Marie Mann (IDBF official) and Norm Hunt (AUSDBF official) it served as an alternate disciplined racing as well as an opportunity to train the new clubs in hosting and running an event.

PRE-EVENTMeetings were held with DBQ’s events director and the clubs to set guidelines and create a flow chart of duties and the time lines for the organising e.g ordering boats, toilets, garbage’s and per-mits etc The events department in council were excellent and very helpful and approachable

THE EVENTThe philosophy was to run an event that was different from the standard regatta set up, that is to make the event more social and yet very competitive. We looked at the demographics of Queensland dragon boating and found we could run an over and under 50’s as it was not feasible to run all divisions. I believed we achieved this as shown in marshalling where all clubs socialised had lots of fun banter and yet at the same time were professional in their mustering and entry into the boats. The marshalling and boat loading volunteers were largely (all bar3) new to the sport and not only learnt a great deal but also were drawn closer to the sport because of the competi-tor’s attitude. The venue set up was a standard regatta and worked well. The only sour note was at the start of the day when a council ranger informed me motorised craft were not allowed on the lake; fortunately we were allowed to finish the event however this would not be allowed again. Unfortunately we didn’t utilise the correct lanes which I believe was a minor problem

RECCOMENDATIONS1. The DBQ regatta continue as an annual event with hosting opportunity offered to different

clubs each year2. Find an alternate venue or meet with Gold Coast council to negotiate motorised safety craft3. Invite regional teams (NSW included) to attend which I believe make them feel more inclusive

Publicity for Hervey Bay Dragons The Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club showcased their sport at the Fraser Coast’s Sports plus Expo on Sunday 7 February at the Hervey Bay PCYC complex. With 3500 people visiting on the day, the club was happy with the positive response and also the opportunity to network with many of the other clubs and services available. A dozen people indicated their interest and supplied their contact details.

The club’s November Come and Try Day generated quite a lot of interest with many who couldn’t make it on the day turning up early this year after the local press published photos of the event. Seven new members were gained because of that exercise with a couple more plan-ning to join when they move to Hervey Bay in the near future.

In memory of Carol WaitohiBefore each race we invited Carol to be with us in the boat and we felt she was there helping us to win 6/6 races and thus 2 gold medals. We wore these arm bands, made by one of our members, every day.On the podium we saluted Carol to thank her and keep her memory alive.

DA Mt WarningFor the first time ever, Dragons Abreast Mt Warning club competed in its own right as breast can-cer survivors in any event ever. Our team, Warning Belles, was made up of 13 of our breast cancer survivor members, who were so excited to be part of this historic event.Four were founder members from when the club first formed in 2007, Chris Lonie, Sue Lonie, Val Lowe and Cheryl Beatty. Ages in the team ranged from 44 to 74 and included a mix of paddling experience. We trained three times a week for four months with land training closer to the end of training, under the watchful eyes of Dougal and Brenda Cumming Thom.We entered the Small Boats, Breast Cancer Survivor 200 m. and 500m. There was lively competition from South Australia Dragons Abreast (SADA), BCF Paddlers in the Pink, Singapore and Boobialla, Tasmania. We were friends on the land and fierce competitors on the water. Before each race we invited Carol Waitohi to join us in spirit in our boat and we know that her presence made a difference for us. Chris Lonie as sweep and Meg Main as drummer drove us over the line to win each heat.At the end of the weekend we had won gold in both the 200 m and 500 m. It was a first for us to compete as DAMW, but to win two gold medals at the CCWC was truly over-whelming.

DRAGONS ABREAST MT WARNING WIN GOLD

Dragons Abreast Mt Warning (paddling under the name of Warning Belles) won two gold medals at the 2016 Club Crews World Championships in Adelaide.

These wins rewarded months of hard training by the women of the Dragons Abreast Mt Warning Club. Paddlers ranged in age from 44 to 74, and many of these women had no sporting history prior to joining DAMW, so a medal at a world event was a pinnacle which they will never forget.

Competition in the small boat Breast Cancer Survivor category came from Singapore, SA and Hobart, and the Warning Belles won all six races. Their gold medals were convincing.Dragons Abreast Mt Warning began in 2007 and is a sub section of the Mt Warning Dragon Boat Club and a member of Dragons Abreast Australia. Four of the original members instrumen-tal in setting up the original club in Murwillumbah were also involved in the Adelaide team: Chris Lonie, Sue Lonie, Val Lowe and Cheryl Beattie.

The special thrill that was Adelaide was made extra poignant for two reasons: it was the first time that Dragons Abreast Mt Warning have competed in their own right, and secondly, they competed in the shadow of the sudden and recent death of Carol Waitohi, a colleague, friend and member of Gold Coast Dragons Abreast with whom Mt Warning had previously partnered in DA events. Black armbands were worn in her honour and she was very much a presence in the boat.

Special thanks go to two of the coaches of Mt Warning Dragon Boat Club, Dougal and Brenda (herself a member of DAMW) Cumming-Thom, for their endless patience, encouragement and enthusiasm, and to Anne Bowden, President of DAMW, for her vision and the persistence to make that vision a reality.

With one in eight women getting a diagnosis of breast cancer in their lifetime, it is imperative that the message of hope and the possibility of leading a full, adventurous and vigorous life after

Te Waka Dragons

Te Waka headed down to Adelaide for Nationals this year with no expectations. Our squad of 34 was smaller than anticipated, with 24 for Masters days & 29 for Premiers. But didnʼt we come home wearing grins that would put the Cheshire Cat to shame! All credit to Skipʼs training programmes and the gutsy efforts of our team that backed up and backed up, and we surprised ourselves and delivered. There were a few firsts for Te Waka at these Nationals. Our first Senior B crew ever raced in the mixed 10s. And didnʼt they race, Gold in the 200m and 500m, and with only four men.

The Senior A ladies not to be outdone collected their first Gold in the 10s 200m. The next first was our debut in the 10s 2000m racing and all put in solid performances, as well as staying right side up - kudos to our sweeps Skip and Woggy, their excellent sweeping skills kept us afloat in the tippy Peishing boats.

And the last first (if thereʼs such a thing), every one of our paddlers returned home with a medal! The icing on the cake came day five. So sure that we finished out of a place in the Premier Open 10s 2k weʼd gone home, all bar one. Lucky Pete stayed as unexpectedly the Te Waka Prems were called to collect the bronze. Thatʼs if you could call them Prems, as there was only 3 of them, the fillers being 3 rooky juniors, 1 master; 2 Senior Bʼs and a Senior C.

The boys had gone out with the intentions to just enjoy a nice little Sunday arvo paddle, no sweat no strain. But the competitive spirt prickled the hackles when they saw Hamilton lining up behind them. “Letʼs not let them pass us” they said. And then they spotted BRD in front “Letʼs overtake BRD!” they said. The cry went out that turns Te Waka into warriors ... Hoose Hoose Hoose!

Open 10s 2000m out for a Sunday arvo paddle – jolly good show!

Medal tally Senior B Mixed 10s -200m – GOLD Senior B Mixed 10s - 500m - GOLD

Senior A Women 10s – 200m – GOLD Senior A Women 10s – 500m – SILVER Senior A Mixed 20s – 200m – BRONZE Premier Women 10s – 200m – SILVER Premier Open 10s 2000m – BRONZE

We applaud the outstanding performances by all the Queensland clubs that took part, the Sunshine State monopolised the podium. You also did us proud with your great results in the CCWC. We canʼt forget our three Auroras, Wendy, Dan and Eevy who put in the hard yards and played their part in the best medal haul yet by an Australian team at the Asian Championships. Congratulations everyone!

Paddling partners and gruesome twosome …! Charlene and Bruce part of the Senior B crew winning gold

The club set high aims at Nationals to retain 2016 CCWC qualification, qualify in as many events as possible for the CCWC in 2018, and to regain the Masters Champion Club Trophy. BRD’s Nationals campaign proved to be very successful with all aims being achieved with par-ticular emphasis on once again winning the Masters Champion Club Trophy. Throughout the event, BRD won 13 Gold medals, 7 Silver medals, and 1 Bronze medal. Once again, BRD showed its consistency of depth across all age groups which included a very im-pressive performance by the Premier Women Small Boat crew to take Gold in the 2000 metres race.Following Nationals, BRD took up the challenge competing at the 10th CCWC in BCS, Masters and Premier categories from 1-7 April. Racing was highly competitive but BRD performed very strongly winning a total of 17 medals in-cluding 7 Gold, 6 Silver and 4 Bronze medals. Overall, the club finished 5th in the Standard Boat section, and 4th in the Small Boat section of the regatta. Other than Canberra Grammar School who won 18 medals in the Junior division, BRD won more medals than any other club through-out the event, once again showing the overall strength of the club.A special highlight for the club came from the BCS Team Missabittatitti who put in an outstand-ing performance to take Gold in the BCS category 2000 metre race on Day 1. It was amazing to see the ladies so excited after the event, and was true reward for a lot of hard work at training in recent months.

The two friends had set off in a double kayak with one boy’s grandmother and his cousin in single kay-aks. They got into difficulty when the wind sprang up and made their return trip to the boat ramp a real struggle. The woman returned with the young girl in their single kayaks and planned to return to help the boys back. She arrived just as the dragon boat was leaving.

The Dragons took off and paddled directly towards the boys. After transferring the tired, but grateful, boys into the dragon boat and securing the kayak with a rope to the back of the boat the paddle back into the wind was exhilarating for the six crew and their “sweep”. After safely delivering the boys to their family, the Lake Dyer Dragons simply pushed off to continue their training session.

Dragon Boating has become a very popular sport with regular regattas held throughout Qld. Some of the members of this local club have become extremely enthusiastic about competitive paddling while others enjoy social paddling for exercise and friendship. The Lake Dyer Dragons have two boats – a 20 seater and a 10 seater. They are always on the lookout for new members to get bums on seats. So, if anyone is interested to find out more checkout the Lake Dyer Dragons Facebook page.

LAKE DYER DRAGON BOAT CLUB An unexpected Adventure

The Lake Dyer Dragons, usually based at Lake Dyer in Laidley, have found themselves having to travel lately to get a paddle. Since Lake Dyer (Bill Gunn Dam) has been closed due to low water levels the paddlers have been going out to Wivenhoe Dam once a week to get on the water.

They found themselves in the middle of an adventure on Saturday 6th February when they were setting up to get the boat on the water for a training session. Some mem-bers of the club were approached by a distressed woman concerned about some people out on the dam in kayaks. She was asking if anyone knew how to contact the ranger or someone with a power boat to help them. The paddlers said to her, without hesitation: “we’ll go out to get them!”

Rob Crowton who is the President of the club said “We initially could see someone on the far side of the dam who appeared to be going nowhere, and two kayaks making their way across with some difficulty pushing into the wind.” It turned out that there were two eleven year old boys struggling to make any headway against the wind, being pushed back to the bank of the dam.

Huge success at both the Aus Champs and CCWC held in Adelaide.

“Burleigh Girlies”

This crew of very determined and motivated Senior C ladies made a clean sweep of the Gold Medals in both the Nationals and CCWC events in Adelaide. Winning every race they entered.

Our sweep Narelle Freeman did an excellent job of keeping the boat on top of the water and steering us to the finish line. Both events were run very professionally, thanks to the hard work of the organising committees and the enthusiastic volunteers.

Burleigh Fire Dragons entered into the 10.s womens Senior C (over 60) in both the Nationals and CCWC for the 200 & 500mtr events. We won every race we entered and took out 2 gold medals in the national and 2 gold in the CCWC.

Tweed Dragons were represented in Adelaide, by a team of 38 paddlers, lead by head Coach Norm Hunt and assistant coaches Marie Mann and Di Brown. We represented inSenior A mixed 10ʼs & womenʼs 20ʼs , Senior B open 10ʻs & mixed 20ʼs , Senior Bwomenʼs 10ʼs, Senior C mixed & open 10ʼs. A practice session on Wednesday 23rd March in the new boats took some getting used to, especially in the new 10ʼs boats, which werevery tippy. Instructions by the sweeps was to sit still and not ʻrock the boatʼ! No one wantedto test the chill factor of the water at West Lakes! We raced on the Thursday and Friday, giving it our very best. The competition was tough and very close.

The Senior B mixed standard boat and Senior C 10ʻs boat, both took out bronze medals in the 200 & 500 metre races. Next the Senior B womenʼs 10ʼs took out another bronze, bringing home a total of 5 bronze medals for the club. Senior A women 2km and Senior B mixed 2km raceswere also represented.

During the two days of racing there were many 10ʼs boats capsizing. It was only a matter of time and our Senior C 10ʼs decided to test the waters just after crossing the finish line inone of their races on day two. Apparently, the water wasnʼt too cold. The wind chill, unfortunately made the experience, not so pleasant. The rescue boat couldnʼt assist as the propeller didnʼt have a safety guard, so the exhausted paddlers, after racing 500m had toswim the boat back to the beach, and bail the boat out. They were not happy campers.Five of the male paddlers had to race back to marshalling to hop back in the Senior Bopens boat to race in another heat. Tired, cold and wet, like true Dragon Boaters they headed back to the start line to race again getting a third place but not enough to get into the finals.

We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the National Championships in Adelaide and also bringing home some bling. We rewarded ourselves by doing a wine tasting tour in the Barossa Valley, on the Saturday to sample some of the fine wines the area has to offer. The team headed home Easter Sunday morning feeling proud about the Clubʼsperformance at the 2016 championships and now are back in training for the next season.

FOR SALE

The 2017 Aurora’s Campaign is due to be launched early May 2016 with a selection handbook which will be distributed via State Associations. AusDBF will post a Facebook message as an alert for participants with a link to the AusDBF website where all the information and bench mark criteria will be available.

At present it is understood China will host the World Nations but as yet IDBF have not confirmed the actual city or province, this information will be circulated as soon as we are advised.

As part of the charter to develop dragon boating in Australia, AusDBF has created a work group to develop the National Athlete’s Pathway. The object is to provide identical opportunity for every paddler, drummer,or steerer to acquire the skills that will transport them from entry level to elite status if so desired. Whether participants be from metropolitan or regional areas it is imperative every one is entitled to the same opportunities for selection into State Squad teams or the National Aurora’s program.

Members from State Associations have nominated their representatives to work with AusDBF to facilitate the requirements and specifics of the project.. The NAP work group is being chaired by Maggie Boyce, AusDBF and information updates will be shared as soon as objectives are reached/approved nationally by all the State stake holders in this process.

2017 AusChamps will be held at Gateway Lakes Wodonga 18-24 April.

Maggie and Ross’s visit to Redcliffe Red DragonsSaturday 9th April, Redcliffe Red Dragons ran a Coun-cil Come ‘n’ Try dragon boating session and were lucky enough to have Maggie & Ross Boyce come down to assist and watch how we ran the session and give advice and new ideas to assist us with future sessions.

The following day, we were fortunate enough to have Maggie and Ross Boyce return and spend just over 3 hours with our members for a special technique session to help bring us up to date with current trends.Maggie showed us some good warm up exercises and then demonstrated to us the latest pad-dling technique and also suggested some training drills for us to practice with. Ross was able to assist the sweeps and trainees with an on water session and suggestions to practice. We had approx. 40 members attend the session and they all enjoyed it immensely and were truly grateful to Ross and Maggie for giving up their time and coming to help develop our Club. A great weekend was had by all that attended and we can’t thank both of them enough for travelling down both days on the weekend (especially after just returning from Adelaide). It definitely gave the Redcliffe Red Dragons something to be excited about and help with our clubs vision.

In 2010, we sent a team of 28 paddlers to Ade-laide to compete in the Premiers division at their first Australian Championships. We looked forward to returning to Adelaide, to race in the divisions we actually entered, to win something (unlike our last visit), to contest our Australian Masters Champions title and to

Manly

qualify for the 2018 CCWC…but most of all to continue to have lots of fun with our Manly Dragon Boat family. This year we sent to the Championships a team of 58 to compete in all divisions. We came away with three gold, five silver and 11 bronze medals.

CCWCManly Dragons took a compliment of 64 paddlers to the 10th CCWC contesting all age divisions and to defend titles achieved in Ravenna and Hong Kong. The club is benefiting from the recruit-ment of a number of new paddlers, many of which are in the Premier Division.

Manly Dragons competed strongly across the seven days finishing with a commendable bling pool of one gold, three silver and four bronze medals after contesting strongly in 27 categories. This concluded some 18 days of competition in which the Manly Dragons contested the National Championships before competing in these World Titles.
