Before 1914 Scotland’s people worked mainly in certain industries

• On the next slide there are picture clues to help you.

• Using your whiteboards make up a mind map showing all the main industries in Scotland before 1914

In your groups try to answer the following questions:

1. List the names of the industries.2. In wartime which of the industries would

be important to the armed forces?Once you have checked your answer with

the teacher and each other make a written note in your jotters about the names of Scottish industries & their importance in wartime.

Extension Task

Look again at the six industries that most people in Scotland worked in. Try to answer the following:

• Are any of the industries connected in any way e.g. materials they use?

• What would happen to the rest if just one of those industries ran into problems?

The challenge is simple:

• Each person in your group must be able to remember the names of all the main Scottish industries before 1914.

• Any mistakes and the whole group must write down the answers again.
